Abstract:Terminal alkynes, under Au-catalyzed conditions, react with aromatic aldehyde diethyl acetals, affording propargylation products through CO bond addition. Furthermore, AuPPh3Cl/AgOTf-catalyzed three-component reaction of aldehydes, alkynes, and triethyl orthoformate is developed. Gold alkynilides are supposed to be reactive intermediates in these reactions.

Abstract:An efficient process based on the gold-catalyzed redox reaction has been developed to oxidize 1,2-diarylacetylene or ynamide to 1,2-diaryldiketone or α-keto imide respectively. This process can tolerate a variety of functional groups and affords 1,2-dicarbonyl compounds in excellent yields under mild reaction conditions.

Abstract:Herein, for the first time, we disclose the gold-catalyzed alkoxy-carbonylation of aryl and vinyl iodides utilizing ligand-enabled Au(I)/Au(III) redox catalysis. The present methodology is found to be general, efficient, employs mild reaction conditions and showcases a broad substrate scope even with structurally complex molecules. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed mechanistic pathways distinct from those of conventional transition metal-catalyzed carbonylation reactions.
Gold(I)-Catalyzed Haloalkynylation of Aryl Alkynes: Two Pathways, One Goal

Abstract:Haloalkynylation reactions provide an efficient method for the simultaneous introduction of a halogen atom and an acetylenic unit. For the first time, we report a gold(I)-catalyzed haloalkynylation of aryl alkynes that delivers exclusively the cis addition product. This method enables the simple synthesis of conjugated and halogenated enynes in yields of up to 90 %. Notably, quantum chemical calculations reveal an exceptional interplay between the place of the attack at the chloroacetylene: No matter which C-C bond is formed, the same enyne product is always formed. This is only possible through rearrangement of the corresponding skeleton. Hereby, one reaction pathway proceeds via a chloronium ion with a subsequent aryl shift; in the second case the corresponding vinyl cation is stabilized by a 1,3-chlorine shift. 13 C-labeling experiments confirmed that the reaction proceeds through both reaction pathways.

Abstract:A new mesoporous silica SBA-15-immobilized triphenylphosphine-gold(I) complex [Ph3P-SBA-15-AuNTf2] was synthesized via the addition of (2-(diphenylphosphino)phenyl)methanamine to triethoxy(3-isocyanatopropyl)silane, followed by immobilization onto SBA-15 and then the reaction with Me2SAuCl and AgNTf2, respectively, and was characterized by different physico-chemical techniques. In the presence of 5 mol% of Ph3P-SBA-15-AuNTf2 and 20 mol% of 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy) as a ligand, the C(sp2)-C(sp) cross-coupling reaction of aryldiazonium tetrafluoroborates and terminal alkynes proceeded smoothly in acetonitrile at room temperature without an external oxidant to deliver diverse arylalkynes in good to excellent yields with wide tolerance of functional groups, including aryl iodide or bromide incompatible with classical cross-coupling. The new supported gold(I) complex could be readily recovered by centrifugation of reaction solution and reused more than ten cycles without any significant decrease in its catalytic activity.

Abstract:The alkyne unit is a versatile building block in organic synthesis and the development of selective multifunctionalization of alkynes is an important object of research in this field. Herein, we report an interesting gold-catalyzed, four-component reaction that achieves the oxo-arylfluorination or oxo-arylalkenylation of internal aromatic or aliphatic alkynes, efficiently breaking a carbon-carbon triple bond and forming four new chemical bonds. The reaction divergence can be controlled by site-directing functional groups in the alkynes; the presence of a phosphonate unit favors the oxo-arylfluorination, while the carboxylate motif benefits oxo-arylalkenylation. This reaction is enabled by an Au(I)/Au(III) redox coupling process using Selectfluor as both an oxidant and a fluorinating reagent. A wide range of structurally diverse α,α-disubstituted ketones, and tri- or tetra-substituted unsaturated ketones have been prepared in synthetically valuable yields and with excellent chemo-, regio- and stereoselectivity. The gram-scale preparation and late-stage application of complex alkynes have further enhanced their synthetic value.

Abstract:An efficient C(sp)-CH(2)CF(3) bond-forming reaction via Pd-catalyzed 2,2,2-trifluoroethylation of aryl and alkyl terminal alkynes has been developed. This protocol proceeds under mild conditions using the readily available and cheap reagent CF(3)CH(2)I as the source of the CH(2)CF(3) group. Various terminal aryl alkynes as well as alkylacetylenes can be transformed into the corresponding trifluoroethylated products in good-to-excellent yields. The method is tolerant of carbonyl, nitro, ester, cyano, and even formyl groups.

Abstract:Herein, we have disclosed the gold-catalyzed 1,2-carboxyarylation of alkenes through the ligand enabled Au(I)/Au(III) catalysis. Unlike other approaches for arylative functionalization of C-C multiple bonds that involve the use of strong nucleophiles, attempts to utilize weak nucleo-philes like carboxylate anions were unsuccessful. The key to achieving this transformation is the use of 1,3-diketone appended alkene which undergoes gold-catalyzed oxyarylation followed by retro-Aldol reaction to afford the product. Mechanistic investigations, comprising numerous control experiments, NMR studies, and HR-MS analysis, were conducted to support the proposed mechanism.

Abstract:The first rhodium-catalyzed trifluoromethoxylation of allenylic trichloroacetimidates has been reported. The products were obtained through a procedure using trifluoromethyl arylsulfonate (TFMS) as the trifluoromethoxy source with a yield up to 76% by identifying the ligand of diene. The reaction proceeds under mild reaction conditions with excellent functional group tolerance and complete regiocontrol.

Abstract:A gold‐catalyzed room temperature allenation of terminal alkynes (ATA) with aldehydes affording 1,3‐disubstituted allenes with diverse functional groups has been developed by identifying a gold(I) catalyst and an amine. The practicality of this reaction has been demonstrated by a ten gram‐scale synthesis and the synthetic potentials have been demonstrated via various transformations and formal total synthesis of (−)‐centrolobine. Mechanistic studies revealed that the gold catalyst, the aldehyde effect, the fluoroalkyl hydroxyl solvent (TFE or HFIP) and the structure of amine are vital in this room temperature ATA reaction.

Abstract:Starting with vinyl sulfoxides and propargyl silane, the Au(I)-catalyzed asymmetric [3,3]-sigmatropic rearrangement of sulfonium intermediate furnished, after protodemetallation step and hydrolysis of thionium ion, the corresponding 4-oxo-2-aryl-2-alkyl-pentanal derivatives. From the fine analysis of crude mixtures representative of this transformation, formal α-arylated products of acetone (1-arylpropan-2-one derivatives) and aryl sulfanes were also isolated and characterized, depending on the substrates and reaction conditions used. Therefore, a tentative mechanistic explanation of the formation of these unexpected products was highlighted and DFT calculations have also streamlined the reactivity of these cationic gold(I)-catalyzed transformations.
