Abstract:We synthesized a range of sulfonated polyaryletherketone (x%SCBI-SPAEK-6F) with pendant benzimidazole side groups at a tunable molar percentage (x within 5-15%) for potential application as proton exchange membrane (PEM). A systematic study had been undertaken to study the performance and the underlying structure-properties relationship of PEMs fabricated by those novel amphoteric polymers. It was found that the dimensional stability, oxidative stability and methanol resistance performance of x%SCBI-SPAEK-6F membranes were significantly improved with the increase of the benzimidazole content due to the acid-base interaction. In particular, the 5%SCBI-SPAEK-6F membrane exhibited a relative selectivity (10.5 x 10(3) S s cm(-3)) almost 20 times higher than that of Nafion117 membrane at 75 degrees C, demonstrating the significant promoted proton conductivity (0.35 S cm(-1)) and reduced methanol penetration (6 x 10(-7) cm(2) s(-1)) by the ionic barrier. With such superior performance, these polymers are promising for the fabrication of practical proton exchange membranes in commercial fuel cells.

Abstract:Sulfonated poly(phthalazinone ether ketone)s (SPPEKs) and zirconium hydrogen phosphate (ZrP) hybrid membranes for direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs) were prepared by the impregnation method and direct blending method. The physicochemical properties of these hybrid membranes were studied by means of field-emission scanning electron microscope (FSEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, and thermogravimetry analysis (TGA). For the hybrid membranes prepared from impregnation procedure, the highest proton conductivity could reach 0.074 S/cm at 80°C under 100% relative humidity and the methanol permeability at room temperature is more than 10 times lower than that of Nafion 117. Abstract:Sulfonated poly(phthalazinone ether ketone) (SPPEK) and 12-phosphotungstic acid (PWA) composite membranes were prepared by the casting procedure, using SPPEK solution blended with PWA. The physicochemical properties of these composite membranes were studied by means of field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FSEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, thermogravimetry analysis (TGA) and Fourier transform infrared attenuated total reflection (FTIR-ATR) spectroscopy. The PWA particles in composite membranes are stable due to the interaction between SO3H group of SPPEK and PWA particles. The proton conductivity of the composite membrane containing 10% PWA reaches the maximum of 0.17 S/cm at 80 degrees C under 100% relative humidity. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Sulfonated polybenzothiazoles with benzimidazole moieties were successfully prepared by polycondensation. For comparison purpose, sulfonated polybenzothiazoles were also synthesized. Rigid-rod sulfonated polybenzothiazoles generally show poor solubility in organic solvents, whereas these sulfonated polybenzothiazoles with high sulfonation degree are soluble, but the membranes cast from them swell excessively in water. Thus they could not be used as proton exchange membranes (PEMs). The comparison study demonstrates that the incorporation of benzimidazole moieties to sulfonated polybenzothiazoles greatly enhances the solubility of products. The resulting copolymers thus could be cast into the membranes as PEMs. The benzimidazole moieties in the resulting polymers improve thermal properties, dimensional stability, tensile strength, Young's modulus, and oxidative stability, but they decrease proton conductivity and the elongation at break, due to the ionic cross-linking and hydrogen bonds. Even so, sulfonated polybenzothiazoles with appropriate content of benzimidazole moieties (10mol%) could still display a high proton conductivity of 0.094Scm−1 at 80°C and an elongation at break of 26.1%. These ionomers exhibited excellent overall properties such as excellent mechanical properties, high thermal and oxidative stability, low swelling, and high proton conductivity, thus they might be a candidate for proton exchange membranes.

Abstract:Sulfonated poly(arylene ether sulfone)s with phosphine oxide moieties (sPESPO) were achieved by polycondensation of bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)phenylphosphine oxide with 3,3'-disulfonate-4,4'-difluorodiphenyl sulfone (SFDPS) and 4-fluorophenyl sulfone (FPSF). Sulfonated poly(arylene ether sulfone)s (sPES) were also synthesized by polymerization of 4,4'-sulfonyldiphenol with SFDPS and FPSF for comparison. The comparative study demonstrates that the sPESPO ionomers exhibit strong intermolecular interactions and high oxidative stability because of the phosphine oxide groups. Furthermore, the sPESPO membrane and the sPES membrane with an equal ion exchange capacity show much different nanophase separation morphology. As a result, the former shows better properties than the latter. The sPESPO membranes exhibit excellent overall properties. For instance, the sPESPO membrane, with a disulfonation degree of 45%, exhibits high thermal and oxidative stability. Moreover, it shows a water uptake of 30.8% and a swelling ratio of 15.8% as well as a proton conductivity of 0.087 S/cm at 80 degrees C.

Abstract:The poly (phthalazinone ether phosphine oxide)s with perfluorobiphenyl moieties were synthesized by copolycondensation of decafluorobiphenyl, bis (4-fluorophenyl) phenylphosphorus oxide, and 4-(4-hydrolphenyl) phthalazinone, which were then converted to the sulfonated poly (phthalazinone ether phosphine oxide)s with perfluorobiphenyl moieties (sPEPOF-x, x means the molar percentage of F-containing units) by sulfonation. The highly hydrophobic perfluorobiphenyl moieties facilitate to form the microphase seperation structures within polymer membranes, increasing the proton conductivity and decreasing the swelling ratio, thus the resultant membranes display superior comprehensive properties. At 80 degrees C, the sPEPOF-25 membrane presents a swelling ratio of only 10%, about half that of Nafion 117 membrane, whereas its proton conductivity is 0.099 S/cm, which is 1.2 times that of Nafion 117 membrane. It also possesses excellent thermal stability and oxidation resistance, showing potential application prospect.

Abstract:A series of sulfonated hyperbranched poly(arylene ether sulfone)s (SHPAESs) have been synthesized by aromatic nucleophilic substitution reaction of 1,1,1-tris(4-hydroxyphenyl)ethane (THPE), 4,4′-dichlorodiphenyl sulfone (DCDPS) and 3,3′-disulfonate-4,4′-dichlorodiphenyl sulfone (SDCDPS), and then the blend membranes of SHPAESs with sulfonated linear poly(ether sulfone) (SPES) (SHPAESs/SPES) have been prepared for proton exchange membrane. All the blends can be cast into tough membranes, and they are miscible in morphology confirmed by scanning electron microscopy. The thermal stability, mechanical property, oxidative stability, ionic exchange capacity (IEC), water uptake and proton conductivity of the blend membranes have been investigated. The results showed that the blend membranes have good thermal and mechanical properties, better stability in water comparing with the linear SPES membrane, and the other promising properties as a new proton exchange membrane for fuel cell application.

Abstract:A series of sulfonated poly(phthalazinone ether phosphine oxide)s with disulfonated moieties (dsPPEPO) were synthesized. Sulfonated poly(phthalazinone ether phosphine oxide)s with mono-sulfonated moieties (msPPEPO) were also prepared for comparative study. These two series of polymers represented two kinds of distribution modes of sulfonic acid side groups. The distribution mode of the sulfonic acid side groups within membranes could remarkably change their microstructure. As a result, dsPPEPO exhibited better dimensional and oxidative stability as compared to msPPEPO on condition of equal sulfonation degree. Moreover, the as-synthesized dsPPEPO showed enhanced proton conductivity further by increasing sulfonation degree while remaining excellent dimensional and oxidative stability. Therefore, the resulting membranes displayed excellent overall properties. For example, the dsPPEPO membrane with a sulfonation degree of 110% presented a lower swelling and much higher proton conductivity than those of Nafion 117. Its oxidative stability was also comparable to the highly durable aromatic PEMs.

Abstract:Blend membranes were obtained by solution casting from poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) and sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (SPEEK) in N,N-dimethylacetamide (DMAc). DSC and XRD were used to characterize the structure of the blend membranes. The effect of PVDF content on the membrane properties was investigated. The methanol permeability, water uptake and the swelling ratio of blend membranes decreased with the increase of PVDF content. Though the proton conductivity decreased upon the addition of PVDF, they were still comparable to that of Nafion® 117 membrane. Higher selectivities were also found for most blend membranes in comparison with Nafion® 117 membrane. The effect of methanol concentration on solution uptake, swelling ratio and methanol permeability of the blend membranes was also studied.

Abstract:New composite proton exchange membrane was prepared by mixing a 1-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) solution of sulfonated poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide) (SPPO) in sodium form and brominated poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide) (BPPO) for hydrophilic-hydrophobic balance, then casting the solution as a thin film, evaporating the solvent, and treating the membrane with aqueous hydrochloric acid. The resulting membranes were subsequently characterized using FTIR-ATR, SEM-EDXA, and TGA instrumentation as well as measurements of basic properties such as ion exchange capacity (IEC), water uptake, proton conductivity, methanol permeability, and single cell performance. Water uptake, IEC, proton conductivity, and methanol permeability all increased with a corresponding increase of SPPO content. By properly compromising the conductivity and methanol permeability, membranes with 60-80 wt % SPPO content exhibited comparable proton conductivity to that of Nafion (R) 117, with only half the methanol permeability, thereby demonstrating higher single cell performance. Abstract:A series of blend membranes from a side. chain type fluorine. containing sulfonated poly( ether sulfone) s( sSPFES) and sulfonated polyimide( SPI) was prepared and characterized. The two sulfonated copolymers showed good compatibility in their trimethylamine salt form, producing uniform, transparent and ductile blend membranes during solution blending and casting processes. The resulting sSPFES/ SPI blend membranes with ion exchange capacities in the range of 1.76-1. 88 mmol/ g showed some property differences in the water uptakes, size changes, proton conductivity and hydrolytic stability with the un-modified ones. Especially, their swelling behavior was considerable effected by the composition with obvious larger size changes in the membrane out. of. plane direction than the in. plane direction, exhibiting size changes no more than 10% in in. plane direction at 60 degrees C in water. The blend membranes could maintain rather good mechani. cal toughness after aging in water at 140 degrees C. for 24 h with mass loss less than 6. 1%. For the fully hydrated blend membranes, their proton conductivity all reached 0. 1 S/ cm at temperature above 50 degrees C.

Abstract:Sulfonated poly(arylene ether ketone phosphine oxide)s (sPEKP) and sulfonated poly(arylene ether ketone ketone phosphine oxide)s (sPEKKP) were prepared by polycondensation for the first time. The phosphine oxide moieties in products were expected to enhance water retention and improve the overall properties. Their properties as proton exchange membranes were investigated and compared. They all showed high thermal stability. Moreover, the sPEKP membranes showed low swelling though they have considerable water uptake at 80°C. However, the sPEKKP membranes displayed much higher water uptake and swelling than the sPEKP membranes with an equivalent ion exchange capacity (IEC) at elevated temperatures, which is due to the structural difference between them. More importantly, the sPEKP and sPEKKP membranes indicated outstanding oxidative stability because of the passivation effect of phosphine oxide groups. In short, the sPEKP membranes showed good overall properties. For example, sPEKP-400 not only showed high thermal and oxidative stability, but also displayed a swelling of 21% and a proton conductivity of 0.075S/cm at 80°C.
Trisulfonation Approach: to Improve the Properties of Poly(arylene Thioether Phosphine Oxide)s Based Proton Exchange Membranes

Abstract:Trisulfonated poly(arylene thioether phosphine oxide)s (tsPTPO) were synthesized for the first time. Compared with mono-sulfonated poly(arylene thioether phosphine oxide)s (msPTPO), tsPTPO possessed identical polymer backbone but different distribution and content of sulfonic acid side groups. This particular distribution of sulfonic acid side groups was employed to adjust the microstructure of membranes. As a result, tsPTPO showed larger but less connective ionic channels in comparison with the corresponding msPTPO bearing equal ion exchange capacity. Because of this distinct microstructure, tsPTPO achieved much better overall properties than the corresponding msPTPO. The tsPTPO membrane with 100% sulfonation degree showed a swelling and proton conductivity comparable to those of Nafion 117 as well as a methanol permeability of only 0.98×10−7cm2/s. Moreover, it also displayed high thermal stability, excellent oxidative stability, and superior mechanical properties. Hence, trisulfonation approach was an effective strategy to enhance the properties of poly(arylene thioether phosphine oxide)s based proton exchange membranes.
Preparation and Properties of Polybenzimidazoles with Sulfophenylsulfonyl Pendant Groups for Proton Exchange Membranes

Abstract:4′-Sulfonate-2,5-dicarboxyphenyl sulfone (SCPS) was synthesized by nucleophilic substitution reaction followed by oxidation reaction. A series of polybenzimidazoles (PBIs) with controlled contents of sulfophenylsulfonyl pendant groups were prepared by polycondensation of SCPS and 2,5-dicarboxyphenyl sulfone with 3,3′-diaminobenzidine. Different from the earlier reports, these soluble PBI with sulfonic acid groups were achieved by attachment of sulfophenylsulfonyl pendant groups. They showed excellent solubility in common organic solvents and thus could be cast into the membrane for fuel cell applications. Moreover, they exhibited high thermal properties as well as oxidative and hydrolytic stability. The sulfoarylated PBI membranes showed low water uptake and swelling, but they exhibited low proton conductivity due to the intermolecular acid–base interaction like sulfonated polybenzimidazoles reported previously. However, they are still interesting matrix materials for proton exchange membranes since their proton conductivity could be improved by the blending or doping method. In addition, the sulfoarylated PBI membranes showed an increasing hydrophilic/hydrophobic nanophase separation morphology with sulfonation degree, leading to the results that their water uptake, swelling, and proton conductivity increased but their oxidative stability decreased with increasing sulfonation degree.
Synthesis and Properties of Side-Chain-Type Sulfonated Poly(Phenylene Oxide) for Proton Exchange Membranes

Abstract:To obtain side-chain-type proton exchange membranes, bromomethylated poly(phenylene oxide) (BPPO) was modified via etherification reaction under mild conditions to introduce pendant naphthalene sulfonic acid groups. The reaction has been proved facile and efficient, and more than 70% of benzyl bromide groups of BPPO could be substituted. Their solution-cast membranes showed potential application as proton exchange membranes. The membranes had acceptable proton conductivity ranging from 38 to 71 mS/cm (25°C, 100% relative humidity) in spite of relatively low ion exchange capacity ranging from 0.93 to 1.62mmol/g. Meanwhile they exhibited outstanding dimensional stability in water (i.e., no more than 32% water uptake and no more than 11% linear expansion ratio in water at 80°C), which was supposed to be ascribed to unique π–π interaction between pendant naphthalene rings.

Abstract:A series of blend membranes from sulfonated Poly(arylene ether sulfone)(S-PSU) and sulfonated polybenzimidazole(S-PBI) were prepared via blend.The properties of membranes were characterized in terms of swelling ratio in methanol aqueous solution,methanol permeability coefficient and proton conductivity.The results show that introduction of PBI reduces the methanol swelling and methanol permeability coefficient of membranes.Furthermore,with the increase of S-PBI content,the methanol permeability coefficient of the blend membranes decreases.

Abstract:Two series of random sulfonated poly-(benzothiazole-co-benzimidazole) polymers (sPBT-BI) with 70% and 60% degree of sulfonation were evaluated as proton exchange membranes. sPBT was also prepared for a comparative study. The mechanical properties of sPBT-BI 73 were greatly enhanced by incorporation of benzimidazole (BI); sPBT-BI70-10 showed a tensile strength of 125 MPa and elongation at break of 38.9%, an increase of 56.5% and 145%, respectively, compared with sPBT. The solubility, dimensional stability, thermal properties, and oxidative stability of sPBT-BI were also improved. The ionic clusters of sPBT-BI membranes in both AFM phase images and TEM images became narrower Time (A) with increasing amounts of BI while containing the same molar amount of sulfonic acid groups. This resulted in lower dimensional swelling and higher mechanical strength, but the proton conductivity decreased. However, high proton conductivity was achieved by incorporating an appropriate content of BI. PEMFC H-2/air single cell performances and durabilities were improved by incorporation of 5% of BI units in sPBT.

Abstract:The microstructure of proton exchange membranes (PEMs) is seldom to be adjusted by the distribution modes of the sulfonic-acid groups to enhance their overall properties. Herein, monosulfonated poly(arylene ether phosphine oxide)s (msPAEPO), disulfonated poly(arylene ether phosphine oxide)s (dsPAEPO), and trisulfonated poly(arylene ether phosphine oxide)s (tsPAEPO) with ﬂuorenyl moieties are synthesized. The distribution modes of the –SO3H groups and the structural unit of diphenol monomer markedly affect the properties of the resulting PEMs. From msPAEPO to dsPAEPO, and then to tsPAEPO, the size of the hydrophilic ionic channels enhances but their connectivity reduces, thus forming distinct microstructures. The resulting PEMs achieve superior comprehensive properties by further adjusting sulfonation degree. As a result, the approach of the distribution adjustment of the sulfonic acid groups is equally effective to tune the microstructure and properties of the sPAEPO membranes with different structural units of diphenols and can be extended to fabricate various high-performance PEMs.

Abstract:Sulfonated poly(arylene thioether ketone ketone sulfone)s (SPATKKS) were synthesized by nucleophilic polycondensation of various amounts of 1,3bis(4-fluorobenzoyl) benzene, 1,3-bis(3-sodium sulfonate-4- fluorobenzoyl)benzene, and 4,4'- dichlorodiphenylsulfone with 4,4'- thiobisbenzenethiol. Sulfonated poly( arylene ether ketone ketone sulfone) s were also prepared in order to compare their oxidation resistance to peroxides with that of SPATKKS. SPATKKS show high oxidation resistance to peroxides. The resulting ionomers with moderate ion exchange capacity present excellent thermal stability (the 5% weight loss temperature is about 500 degrees C) and low water uptake and swelling ratio until 85 degrees C. The materials hold promise for application as proton exchange membranes in fuel cells.

Abstract:Fluorenyl-containing sulfonated poly(arylene ether phosphine oxide)s (sPAEPO) with various sulfonation degrees were synthesized by direct polycondensation of 9,9-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl) fluorene with sulfonated bis(4-fluorophenyl)phenyl phosphine oxide and bis(4-fluorophenyl)phenyl phosphine oxide. The structure of sPAEPO was confirmed by NMR and IR spectroscopy. The transparent, tough, and flexible membranes of sPAEPO were obtained by solution casting. The thermal properties, ion exchange capacity, water uptake, swelling ratio, proton conductivity, and microstructure were investigated. sPAEPO membranes exhibit excellent overall properties. For example, sPAEPO-100 membrane shows a water uptake of 28.6% and a swelling ratio of 10.5% as well as a proton conductivity of 9.4×10−2S/cm at 80°C. AFM micrographs illustrated that as the sulfonation degree increases, the phase contrast of images and the connectivity of hydrophilic domains increases. For sPAEPO-100, the hydrophilic domains form the connected and narrow channels of an ionic rich phase, which contributes to high proton conductivity as well as dimensional stability. The sPAEPO membranes are expected to be a promising candidate for fuel cell applications.
