Abstract:We show the existence of unbounded orbits in perturbations of generic geodesic flow in $\mathbb{T}^2 $ by a generic periodic potential. Different from previous work such as in Mather (1997), the initial values of the orbits obtained here are not required sufficiently large.

Abstract:The problem of Arnold diffusion is raised for nearly integrable Hamiltonian systems. It concerns whether there exists an orbit along which the action undergoes substantial variation. Variational method has been shown a powerful tool for the study of Arnold diffusion of Hamiltonian systems convex in actions. In variational language, it amounts to construct an orbit connecting two different Aubry sets. This is the main content of the lecture notes.

Abstract: Motivated by the problem of global stability of thermodynamical equilibria in non-equilibrium thermodynamics formulated in a recent paper [12], we introduce some mechanisms for constructing semi-infinite orbits of contact Hamiltonian systems connecting two Legendrian graphs from the viewpoint of Aubry-Mather theory and weak KAM theory.

Abstract:In contrast to the time-dependent case, the time-t-section of Mane set of autonomous Lagrangian systems is independent of time, thus, it is nowhere disconnected. This causes some difference in the study of dynamics, for instance, Mather's c-equivalence cannot exist among different cohomology classes if they are not in a flat of the alpha-function (cf (Bernard 2002 Ann. Inst. Fourier 52 1533-68.)). In this paper, we show how to construct connecting orbits in autonomous systems, and propose a modified notion of c-equivalence. We also apply the result to construct diffusion orbits in an energy surface.

Abstract:We study a one-dimensional Lagrangian problem including the variational reformulation, derived in a recent work of Ambrosio–Baradat–Brenier, of the discrete Monge–Ampère gravitational model, which describes the motion of interacting particles whose dynamics is ruled by the optimal transport problem. The more general action-type functional we consider contains a discontinuous potential term related to the descending slope of the opposite squared distance function from a generic discrete set in . We exploit the underlying geometrical structure provided by the associated Voronoi decomposition of the space to obtain -regularity for local minimizers out of a finite number of shock times.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the problem of homoclinic orbits to Aubry sets for time-periodic positive definite Lagrangian systems. We show that there are infinitely many homoclinic orbits to some Aubry set under the conditions that the associated Mather set is uniquely ergodic and the first relative homology group of the projection of this Aubry set is nonzero.

Abstract:If the Aubry set A˜(c) satisfies some topological hypothesis, such as H1(M×T,A(c),R)≠0, then the α-function has a flat. In this paper, we will prove that A˜(c′) has infinitely many M˜-minimal homoclinic orbits when c′ is on the boundary of the maximal flat of the α-function. These homoclinic orbits are different from the usually called multi-bump solutions.

Abstract:Lagrangian multiforms provide a variational framework to describe integrable hierarchies. The case of Lagrangian 1-forms covers finite-dimensional integrable systems. We use the theory of Lie dialgebras introduced by Semenov-Tian-Shansky to construct a Lagrangian 1-form. Given a Lie dialgebra associated with a Lie algebra and a collection , , of invariant functions on , we give a formula for a Lagrangian multiform describing the commuting flows for on a coadjoint orbit in . We show that the Euler–Lagrange equations for our multiform produce the set of compatible equations in Lax form associated with the underlying r -matrix of the Lie dialgebra. We establish a structural result which relates the closure relation for our multiform to the Poisson involutivity of the Hamiltonians and the so-called double zero on the Euler–Lagrange equations. The construction is extended to a general coadjoint orbit by using reduction from the free motion of the cotangent bundle of a Lie group. We illustrate the dialgebra construction of a Lagrangian multiform with the open Toda chain and the rational Gaudin model. The open Toda chain is built using two different Lie dialgebra structures on . The first one possesses a non-skew-symmetric r -matrix and falls within the Adler–Kostant–Symes scheme. The second one possesses a skew-symmetric r -matrix. In both cases, the connection with the well-known descriptions of the chain in Flaschka and canonical coordinates is provided.

Abstract:The article presents a novel variational calculus to analyze the stability and the propagation of chaos properties of nonlinear and interacting diffusions. This differential methodology combines gradient flow estimates with backward stochastic interpolations, Lyapunov linearization techniques as well as spectral theory. This framework applies to a large class of stochastic models including non homogeneous diffusions, as well as stochastic processes evolving on differentiable manifolds, such as constraint-type embedded manifolds on Euclidian spaces and manifolds equipped with some Riemannian metric. We derive uniform as well as almost sure exponential contraction inequalities at the level of the nonlinear diffusion flow, yielding what seems to be the first result of this type for this class of models. Uniform propagation of chaos properties w.r.t. the time parameter are also provided. Illustrations are provided in the context of a class of gradient flow diffusions arising in fluid mechanics and granular media literature. The extended versions of these nonlinear Langevin-type diffusions on Riemannian manifolds are also discussed.

Abstract:In this article we study constrained variational problems in one independent variable defined on the space of integral curves of a Frenet system in a homogeneous space G/H. We prove that if the Lagrangian is G-invariant and coisotropic then the extremal curves can be found by quadratures. Our proof is constructive and relies on the reduction theory for coisotropic optimal control problems. This gives a unified explanation of the integrability of several classical variational problems such as the total squared curvature functional, the projective, conformal and pseudo-conformal arc-length functionals, the Delaunay and the Poincar{é} variational problems.

Surrogate Lagrangians for Variational Integrators: High Order Convergence with Low Order Schemes

Abstract:Variational integrators are momentum-preserving and symplectic numerical methods used to propagate the evolution of Hamiltonian systems. In this paper, we introduce a new class of variational integrators that achieve fourth-order convergence despite having the same integration scheme as traditional second-order variational integrators. The new class of integrators are created by replacing a dynamical system's Lagrangian in the variational integration algorithm with its surrogate Lagrangian. By incorporating the surrogate Lagrangian the propagation errors induced by variational integrators, up to a given order, are eliminated. Furthermore, no assumption on the Lagrangian's structure is made and, therefore, the proposed approach is applicable to a large range of dynamical systems. In addition, surrogate variational integrators are also constructed for Hamiltonian systems subjected to holonomic constraints and external forces. Finally, the methodology is extended to derive higher-order surrogate variational integrators that achieve an arbitrary order of accuracy but retain second-order complexity in the integration scheme. Several numerical experiments are presented to demonstrate the efficacy of our approach.

Abstract:We describe isotropic orbits for the restricted action of a subgroup of a Lie group acting on a symplectic manifold by Hamiltonian symplectomorphisms and admitting an Ad*-equivariant moment map. We obtain examples of Lagrangian orbits of complex flag manifolds, of cotangent bundles of orthogonal Lie groups, and of products of flags. We introduce the notion of infinitesimally tight and study the intersection theory of such Lagrangian orbits, giving many examples.

Abstract:We develop an elementary method to give a Lipschitz estimate for the minimizers in the problem of Herglotz' variational principle proposed in \cite{CCWY2018} in the time-dependent case. We deduce Erdmann's condition and the Euler-Lagrange equation separately under different sets of assumptions, by using a generalized du Bois-Reymond lemma. As an application, we obtain a representation formula for the viscosity solution of the Cauchy problem for the Hamilton-Jacobi equation \begin{align*} D_tu(t,x)+H(t,x,D_xu(t,x),u(t,x))=0 \end{align*} and study the related Lax-Oleinik evolution.

Abstract:Consider a positive functional F ⁢ ( y ) := ∫ t T L ⁢ ( s , y ⁢ ( s ) , y ′ ⁢ ( s ) ) ⁢ d s , defined on the space of Sobolev functions W 1 , p ⁢ ( [ t , T ] ; R n ) , where p ≥ 1 . This functional is minimized among functions y that may satisfy one or both endpoint conditions. The Lagrangian L is allowed to assume the value + ∞ . In numerous applications minimizers may not be explicit or even may not exist. In such circumstances, it is crucial to know that the infimum of F can be approximated using a sequence of Lipschitz functions that meet the given boundary conditions. However, there are instances where this approximation is not feasible, even with polynomial Lagrangians that meet Tonelli's existence conditions: this situation is referred to as the Lavrentiev phenomenon. Some results are present in the literature if one requires the Lipschitz approximations to preserve just one endpoint constraint or when the Lagrangian is finite valued. The present paper deals with problems with two endpoint constraints and Lagrangians that are allowed to take extended values. As a byproduct, our Lipschitz approximations may preserve given state constraints. The extended-valued case is challenging since the phenomenon may occur even when the Lagrangian is constant on its effective domain, whose topology becomes relevant. Once assumed that the Lagrangian is radial convex on the rays of the last variable, our findings offer new insights, even when the Lagrangian L is real-valued, autonomous, and there are no state constraints.

Abstract:In a Birkhoff region of instability for an exact area-preserving twist map, we construct some orbits connecting distinct Denjoy minimal sets. These sets correspond to the local, instead of global minimum of the Lagrangian action. In the earlier work, Mather constructed connecting orbits among Aubry-Mather sets and the global minimizer of the Lagrangian action.

Abstract:Assume that the Aubry set of the time-periodic positive definite Lagrangian $L$ consists of one hyperbolic 1-periodic orbit. We provide an upper bound estimate of the rate of convergence of the family of new Lax-Oleinik type operators associated with $L$ introduced by the authors in \cite{W-Y}. In addition, we construct an example where the Aubry set of a time-independent positive definite Lagrangian system consists of one hyperbolic periodic orbit and the rate of convergence of the Lax-Oleinik semigroup cannot be better than $O(\frac{1}{t})$.

We study the ergodic problem of the stationary equation via the solution semigroup.
