Abstract:We study a one-dimensional Lagrangian problem including the variational reformulation, derived in a recent work of Ambrosio–Baradat–Brenier, of the discrete Monge–Ampère gravitational model, which describes the motion of interacting particles whose dynamics is ruled by the optimal transport problem. The more general action-type functional we consider contains a discontinuous potential term related to the descending slope of the opposite squared distance function from a generic discrete set in . We exploit the underlying geometrical structure provided by the associated Voronoi decomposition of the space to obtain -regularity for local minimizers out of a finite number of shock times.

Abstract:We discuss the global regularity of solutions f to the Dirichlet problem for minimal graphs in the hyperbolic space when the boundary of the domain Ω⊂ℝ^n has a nonnegative mean curvature and prove an optimal regularity f∈ C^1/n+1(Ω̅). We can improve the Hölder exponent for f if certain combinations of principal curvatures of the boundary do not vanish, a phenomenon observed by F.-H. Lin.

Abstract:Developing an original idea of De Giorgi, we introduce a new and purely variational approach to the Cauchy Problem for a wide class of defocusing hyperbolic equations. The main novel feature is that the solutions are obtained as limits of functions that minimize suitable functionals in space-time (where the initial data of the Cauchy Problem serve as prescribed boundary conditions). This opens up the way to new connections between the hyperbolic world and that of the Calculus of Variations. Also dissipative equations can be treated. Finally, we discuss several examples of equations that fit in this framework, including nonlocal equations, in particular equations with the fractional Laplacian.

Abstract:In this article we study the minimal time for the exact controllability of one-dimensional first-order linear hyperbolic systems when all the controls are acting on the same side of the boundary. We establish an explicit and easy-to-compute formula for this time with respect to all the coupling parameters of the system. The proof relies on the introduction of a canonical $UL$-decomposition and the compactness-uniqueness method.

Abstract:We study asymptotic behaviors of solutions f to the Dirichlet problem for minimal graphs in the hyperbolic space with singular asymptotic boundaries under the assumption that the boundaries are piecewise regular with positive curvatures, a case which also arises in the study of a Chaplygin gas. We derive an estimate of such solutions by the corresponding solutions in the intersections of interior tangent balls. The positivity of curvatures plays an important role.

Abstract:Livšic theorem for flows asserts that a Lipschitz observable that has zero mean average along every periodic orbit is necessarily a coboundary, that is the Lie derivative of a Lipschitz function smooth along the flow direction. The positive Livšic theorem bounds from below the observable by such a coboundary as soon as the mean average along every periodic orbit is non negative. Previous proofs give a Hölder coboundary. Assuming that the dynamics is given by a locally maximal hyperbolic flow, we show that the coboundary can be Lipschitz. We introduce a new tool: the Lax-Oleinik semigroup, inspired by Fathi's weak KAM theory.

Dynamical Stability of Minimal Lagrangians in Kähler-Einstein Manifolds of Non-Positive Curvature

Abstract:It is known that minimal Lagrangians in Kähler--Einstein manifolds of non-positive scalar curvature are linearly stable under Hamiltonian deformations. We prove that they are also stable under the Lagrangian mean curvature flow, and therefore establish the equivalence between linear stability and dynamical stability. Specifically, if one starts the mean curvature flow with a Lagrangian which is $C^1$-close and Hamiltonian isotopic to a minimal Lagrangian, the flow exists smoothly for all time, and converges to that minimal Lagrangian. Due to the work of Neves [Ann. of Math. 2013], this cannot be true for $C^0$-closeness.

Abstract:We study step-wise time approximations of non-linear hyperbolic initial value problems. The technique used here is a generalization of the minimizing movements method, using two time-scales: one for velocity, the other (potentially much larger) for acceleration. The main applications are from elastodynamics namely so-called generalized solids, undergoing large deformations. The evolution follows an underlying variational structure exploited by step-wise minimisation. We show for a large family of (elastic) energies that the introduced scheme is stable; allowing for non-linearities of highest order. If the highest order can assumed to be linear, we show that the limit solutions are regular and that the minimizing movements scheme converges with optimal linear rate. Thus this work extends numerical time-step minimization methods to the realm of hyperbolic problems.

Abstract:We describe isotropic orbits for the restricted action of a subgroup of a Lie group acting on a symplectic manifold by Hamiltonian symplectomorphisms and admitting an Ad*-equivariant moment map. We obtain examples of Lagrangian orbits of complex flag manifolds, of cotangent bundles of orthogonal Lie groups, and of products of flags. We introduce the notion of infinitesimally tight and study the intersection theory of such Lagrangian orbits, giving many examples.

Local minima in Newton's aerodynamical problem and inequalities between norms of partial derivatives

Abstract:The problem considered first by I. Newton (1687) consists in finding a surface of the minimal frontal resistance in a parallel flow of non-interacting point particles. The standard formulation assumes that the surface is convex with a given convex base $\Omega$ and a bounded altitude. Newton found the solution for surfaces of revolution. Without this assumption the problem is still unsolved, although many important results have been obtained in the last decades. We consider the problem to characterize the domains $\Omega$ for which the flat surface gives a local minimum. We show that this problem can be reduced to an inequality between $L_2$-norms of partial derivatives for bivariate concave functions on a convex domain that vanish on the boundary. Can the ratio between those norms be arbitrarily large? The answer depends on the geometry of the domain. A complete criterion is derived, which also solves the local minimality problem.

Abstract:We study notions of asymptotic regularity for a class of minimal submanifolds of complex hyperbolic space that includes minimal Lagrangian submanifolds. As an application, we show a relationship between an appropriate formulation of Colding-Minicozzi entropy and a quantity we call the CR-volume that is computed from the asymptotic geometry of such submanifolds.

Abstract:We consider in this work the problem of minimizing the von Neumann entropy under the constraints that the density of particles, the current, and the kinetic energy of the system is fixed at each point of space. The unique minimizer is a self-adjoint positive trace class operator, and our objective is to characterize its form. We will show that this minimizer is solution to a self-consistent nonlinear eigenvalue problem. One of the main difficulties in the proof is to parametrize the feasible set in order to derive the Euler-Lagrange equation, and we will proceed by constructing an appropriate form of perturbations of the minimizer. The question of deriving quantum statistical equilibria is at the heart of the quantum hydrody-namical models introduced by Degond and Ringhofer in [5]. An original feature of the problem is the local nature of constraints, i.e. they depend on position, while more classical models consider the total number of particles, the total current and the total energy in the system to be fixed.

Abstract:We introduce a structural approach to study Lagrangian submanifolds of the complex hyperquadric in arbitrary dimension by using its family of non-integrable almost product structures.In particular,we define local angle functions encoding the geometry of the Lagrangian submanifold at hand.We prove that these functions are constant in the special case that the Lagrangian immersion is the Gauss map of an isoparametric hypersurface of a sphere and give the relation with the constant principal curvatures of the hypersurface.We also use our techniques to classify all minimal Lagrangian submanifolds of the complex hyperquadric which have constant sectional curvatures and all minimal Lagrangian submanifolds for which all local angle functions,respectively all but one,coincide.
On the existence of minimal expansive solutions to the $N$-body problem

Abstract:We deal, for the classical $N$-body problem, with the existence of action minimizing half entire expansive solutions with prescribed asymptotic direction and initial configuration of the bodies. We tackle the cases of hyperbolic, hyperbolic-parabolic and parabolic arcs in a unitary manner. Our approach is based on the minimization of a renormalized Lagrangian action, on a suitable functional space. With this new strategy, we are able to confirm the already-known results of the existence of both hyperbolic and parabolic solutions, and we prove for the first time the existence of hyperbolic-parabolic solutions for any prescribed asymptotic expansion in a suitable class. Associated with each element of this class we find a viscosity solution of the Hamilton-Jacobi equation as a linear correction of the value function. Besides, we also manage to give a better description of the growth of parabolic and hyperbolic-parabolic solutions.

Abstract:SIAM Journal on Mathematical Analysis, Volume 56, Issue 6, Page 7830-7845, December 2024. Despite its high significance in nonlinear elasticity, the neo-Hookean energy is still not known to admit minimizers in some appropriate admissible class. Using ideas from relaxation theory, we propose a larger minimization space and a modified functional that coincides with the neo-Hookean energy on the original space. This modified energy is the sum of the neo-Hookean energy and a term penalizing the singularities of the inverse deformation. The new functional attains its minimum in the larger space, so the initial question of existence of minimizers of the neo-Hookean energy is thus transformed into a question of regularity of minimizers of this new energy.
