Abstract:In this paper, we first present some sufficient conditions for the upper semicontinuity and/or the continuity of the Bregman farthest-point map $Q_C^g$ and the relative farthest-point map $S_C^g$ for a nonempty $D$-maximally approximately compact subset $C$ of a Banach space $X$. We next present certain sufficient conditions as well as equivalent conditions for a Klee set to be singleton in a Banach space $X$. Our results extend and/or improve the corresponding ones of [Bauschke, et al., J. Approx. Theory, 158 (2009), pp. 170-183] to infinite dimensional spaces.

Abstract:To provide a Kolmogorov-type condition for characterizing a best approximation in a continuous complex-valued function space, it is usually assumed that the family of closed convex sets in the complex plane used to restrict the range satisfies a strong interior-point condition, and this excludes the interesting case when some t is a line-segment or a singleton. The main aim of the present paper is to remove this restriction by virtue of a study of the notion of the strong CHIP for an infinite system of closed convex sets in a continuous complex-valued function space.

Abstract:Using the error bound results established in the present paper for approximate solutions, we study the stability issues when perturbed by possibly nonaffine smooth maps E for the abstract inequality system F >=(K) 0 defined by a (possible nonclosed) convex cone K and a Frechet differentiable function F satisfying the (extended) weak gamma-condition. We provide some sufficient conditions, in terms of the information at a solution x(0), for ensuring the lower semicontinuity and/or the Lipschitz-like continuity at x(0) of the solution mapping for the perturbed system F + E >=(K) 0 with smooth perturbation E. Explicit upper bounds of the Lipschitz-like moduli are also provided.

Abstract:The notions of the τC -Kolmogorov condition, the τC-sun and the τC-regular point are introduced, and the relationships between them and the best τC -approximation are explored. As a consequence, characterizations of best τC-approximations from some kind of subsets (not necessarily convex) are obtained. As an application, a characterization result for a set C to be smooth is given in terms of the τC-approximation.

Abstract:Several fundamental concepts such as the basic constraint qualification (BCQ), the strong conical hull intersection property (CHIP), and the perturbations for convex systems of inequalities in Banach spaces (over R or C) are extended and studied; here the systems are not necessarily finite. Their relationships with each other in connection with the best approximations are investigated. As applications, we establish results on the unconstrained reformulation of best approximations with infinitely many constraints in Hilbert spaces; also we give several characterizations of best restricted range approximations in C(Q) under quite general constraints.

Abstract:We study C^2 weakly order preserving circle maps with a flat interval. In particular we are interested in the geometry of the mapping near to the singularities at the boundary of the flat interval. Without any assumption on the rotation number we show that the geometry is degenerate when the degree of the singularities is less than or equal to two and becomes bounded when the degree goes to three. As an example of application, the result is applied to study Cherry flows.

In this paper, we prove that the above variational problem has a minimizer for $N\geq2$ under the following two assumptions: \begin{enumerate} \item[$(i)$]\quad $a_c^*\leq a<a_c$ and $a\leq b<a+1$, \item[$(ii)$]\quad $a<a_c^*$ and $b_{FS}^*(a)\leq b<a+1$, \end{enumerate} where $a_c^*=\bigg(1-\sqrt{\frac{N-1}{2N}}\bigg)a_c$ and \begin{eqnarray*} b_{FS}^*(a)=\frac{(a_c-a)N}{a_c-a+\sqrt{(a_c-a)^2+N-1}}+a-a_c. \end{eqnarray*} Our results extend that of Konig in \cite{K2023} for the Sobolev inequality to the CKN inequality. Moreover, we believe that our assumptions~$(i)$ and $(ii)$ are optimal for the existence of minimizers of the above variational problem.

Abstract:A finite family F of d -dimensional convex polytopes is called k -neighborly if d − k ⩽ dim ( C ∩ C ′ ) ⩽ d − 1 for any two distinct members C , C ′ ∈ F . In 1997, Alon initiated the study of the general function n ( k , d ) , which is defined to be the maximum size of k -neighborly families of standard boxes in R d . Based on a weighted count of vectors in { 0 , 1 } d , we improve a recent upper bound on n ( k , d ) by Alon, Grytczuk, Kisielewicz, and Przesławski for any positive integers d and k with d ⩾ k + 2 . In particular, when d is sufficiently large and k ⩾ 0 . 123 d , our upper bound on n ( k , d ) improves the bound ∑ i = 1 k 2 i − 1 d i + 1 shown by Huang and Sudakov exponentially. Furthermore, we determine that n ( 2 , 4 ) = 9 , n ( 3 , 5 ) = 18 , n ( 3 , 6 ) = 27 , n ( 4 , 6 ) = 37 , n ( 5 , 7 ) = 74 , and n ( 6 , 8 ) = 150 . The stability result of Kleitman’s isodiametric inequality plays an important role in the proofs.

A new problem qualification based on approximate KKT conditions for Lipschitzian optimization with application to bilevel programming

Abstract:When dealing with general Lipschitzian optimization problems, there are many problem classes where standard constraint qualifications fail at local minimizers. In contrast to a constraint qualification, a problem qualification does not only rely on the constraints but also on the objective function to guarantee that a local minimizer is a Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) point. For example, calmness in the sense of Clarke is a problem qualification. In this article, we introduce the Subset Mangasarian-Fromovitz Condition (subMFC). This new problem qualification is based on a nonsmooth version of the approximate KKT conditions, which hold at every local minimizer without further assumptions. A comparison with existing constraint qualifications and problem qualifications for the given problem class reveals that subMFC is strictly weaker than quasinormality and can hold even if the local error bound condition, the cone-continuity property, Guignard's constraint qualification and calmness in the sense of Clarke are violated. Further, we emphasize the power of the new problem qualification within the context of bilevel optimization. More precisely, under mild assumptions on the problem data, we suggest a version of subMFC that is tailored to the lower-level value function reformulation. It turns out that this new condition can be satisfied even if the widely used partial calmness condition does not hold.

On the interval coloring impropriety of graphs

Abstract:An improper interval (edge) coloring of a graph $G$ is an assignment of colors to the edges of $G$ satisfying the condition that, for every vertex $v \in V(G)$, the set of colors assigned to the edges incident with $v$ forms an integral interval. An interval coloring is $k$-improper if at most $k$ edges with the same color all share a common endpoint. The minimum integer $k$ such that there exists a $k$-improper interval coloring of the graph $G$ is the interval coloring impropriety of $G$, denoted by $\mu_{int}(G)$. In this paper, we provide a construction of an interval coloring of a subclass of complete multipartite graphs. This provides additional evidence to the conjecture by Casselgren and Petrosyan that $\mu_{int}(G)\leq 2$ for all complete multipartite graphs $G$. Additionally, we determine improved upper bounds on the interval coloring impropriety of several classes of graphs, namely 2-trees, iterated triangulations, and outerplanar graphs. Finally, we investigate the interval coloring impropriety of the corona product of two graphs, $G\odot H$.

Abstract:Given a non-flat S-unimodal interval map f, we show that there exists C which only depends on the order of the critical point c such that if |Df n (f(c))|≥C for all n sufficiently large, then f admits an absolutely continuous invariant probability measure (acip). As part of the proof we show that if the quotients of successive intervals of the principal nest of f are sufficiently small, then f admits an acip. As a special case, any S-unimodal map with critical order ℓ<2+ɛ having no central returns possesses an acip. These results imply that the summability assumptions in the theorems of Nowicki & van Strien [21] and Martens & Nowicki [17] can be weakened considerably.

The interval coloring impropriety of planar graphs

Abstract:For a graph $G$, we call an edge coloring of $G$ an \textit{improper} \textit{interval edge coloring} if for every $v\in V(G)$ the colors, which are integers, of the edges incident with $v$ form an integral interval. The \textit{interval coloring impropriety} of $G$, denoted by $\mu_{int}(G)$, is the smallest value $k$ such that $G$ has an improper interval edge coloring where at most $k$ edges of $G$ with a common endpoint have the same color. The purpose of this note is to communicate solutions to two previous questions on interval coloring impropriety, mainly regarding planar graphs. First, we prove $\mu_{int}(G) \leq 2$ for every outerplanar graph $G$. This confirms the conjecture by Casselgren and Petrosyan in the affirmative. Secondly, we prove that for each $k\geq 2$, the interval coloring impropriety of $k$-trees is unbounded. This refutes the conjecture by Carr, Cho, Crawford, Iršič, Pai and Robinson.

Abstract:By means of fixed point index theory for multi-valued maps, we provide an analogue of the classical Birkhoff--Kellogg Theorem in the context of discontinuous operators acting on affine wedges in Banach spaces. Our theory is fairly general and can be applied, for example, to eigenvalues and parameter problems for ordinary differential equations with discontinuities. We illustrate in details this fact for a class of second order boundary value problem with deviated arguments and discontinuous terms. In a specific example, we explicitly compute the terms that occur in our theory.

Abstract:A graph is diameter-$k$-critical if its diameter equals $k$ and the deletion of any edge increases its diameter. The Murty-Simon Conjecture states that for any diameter-2-critical graph $G$ of order $n$, $e(G) \leq \lfloor \frac{n^2}{4}\rfloor$, with equality if and only if $G \cong K_{\lfloor \frac{n}{2}\rfloor,\lceil \frac{n}{2}\rceil}$. Füredi (JGT,1992) proved that this conjecture is true for sufficiently large $n$. Over two decades later, Loh and Ma (JCT-B, 2016) proved that $e(G) \leq \frac{n^2}{6}+o(n^2)$ for diameter-3-critical graphs $G$, and $e(G) \leq \frac{3n^2}{k}$ for diameter-$k$-critical graphs $G$ with $k \geq 4$. In this paper, we improve the bound for diameter-$k$-critical graphs to $ \frac{n^2}{2k}+o(n^2)$.

Kohayakawa-Nagle-R{ö}dl-Schacht conjecture for subdivisions

Abstract:In this paper, we study the well-known Kohayakawa-Nagle-R{ö}dl-Schacht (KNRS) conjecture, with a specific focus on graph subdivisions. The KNRS conjecture asserts that for any graph $H$, locally dense graphs contain asymptotically at least the number of copies of $H$ found in a random graph with the same edge density. We prove the following results about $k$-subdivisions of graphs (obtained by replacing edges with paths of length $k+1$): (1). If $H$ satisfies the KNRS conjecture, then its $(2k-1)$-subdivision satisfies Sidorenko's conjecture, extending a prior result of Conlon, Kim, Lee and Lee; (2). If $H$ satisfies the KNRS conjecture, then its $2k$-subdivision satisfies a constant-fraction version of the KNRS conjecture; (3). If $H$ is regular and satisfies the KNRS conjecture, then its $2k$-subdivision also satisfies the KNRS conjecture. These findings imply that all balanced subdivisions of cliques satisfy the KNRS conjecture, improving upon a recent result of Bradač, Sudakov and Wigerson. Our work provides new insights into this pivotal conjecture in extremal graph theory.
