Abstract:Digital double-ring sensor based on silicon nanowires is demonstrated experimentally for the first time. An ultrahigh sensitivity δλ/δn up to 1.46 × 105 nm/RIU is achieved. And the detection limit is close to 2 × 10-6.

Abstract:A cascaded-ring optical sensor with Vernier effect is demonstrated experimentally by using Si nanowires. The Vernier effect helps to obtain ultrahigh sensitivity. In order to enhance the sensitivity further, a suspended Si nanowire is used for the sensing ring by removing the SiO2 insulator underneath with a wet-etching process. The measurement result shows that the sensitivity Δλ/Δna of the demonstrated cascaded-ring optical sensor is up to 4.6×105 nm/RIU experimentally. The detection limit for the index change is about 4.8×10-6.

Abstract:We demonstrate a refractive index (RI) sensor based on semiconductor nanowire lasers. It is shown that the TE01 mode is responsible for lasing and sensing with the lasing threshold of 3 μJ/mm2 and the lasing peak width as narrow as 0.22 nm. A RI sensitivity of 21.2 nm/RIU (refractive index units), a figure of merit of approximately 100, and an RI detection limit of 1.4×10−3 RIU are achieved.

Abstract:We report the latest experimental results of cascaded double ring sensor. To improve the sensitivity, nanowire waveguide sensor operating in TM polarization is designed and fabricated, with the help of the e-beam lithography system. The measured transmission spectrum shows good agreement with theoretical analysis.

Abstract:Summary form only given. Optical waveguide sensors based on silicon-on-insulator (SOI) nanowire have received great interest due to their potential applications in many fields including bacteria and virus detection, medical diagnostics, food quality control, environment monitoring, and drug development. Various types of SOI sensors have been developed, including Mach-Zehnder interferometer, microdisks and microring resonators. High-sensitivity sensors based on cascaded double-ring resonators and a Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) cascaded with a microring resonator employing Vernier effect have recently been proposed and experimentally demonstrated. Simple and low-cost intensity interrogation can be employed without using a high resolution spectrometer or a narrow line-width tunable laser. Label-free detection capability of these two types of SOI sensors have also been demonstrated. This talk reviews our work on the design, fabrication and measurement of SOI nanowire based high-sensitivity biosensors employing Vernier effect. Biosensing experiments using cascaded double-ring sensor and Mach-Zehnder-ring sensor integrated with microfluidic channels are also presented.

Abstract:We report the experimental results of a highly sensitive silicon photonic biosensor based on two cascaded ring resonators operating in transverse-magnetic mode. The sensitivities of wavelength interrogation method and intensity interrogation method reach 24,300 nm/RIU and 2,430 dB/RIU, respectively.

Abstract:A digital optical sensor based on two cascaded rings with different free spectral ranges (FSRs) is proposed. Because of their different FSRs, the major peak of the spectral response from the output port shifts digitally when the effective refractive index of ring #1 changes. And the shift of the major peak is equal to multiple FSRs of ring #2. Since it is easy to design a ring with a FSR of nanometers, the present digital optical sensor shows an ultra-high sensitivity (at the order of 10(5) nm/RIU) which is over two orders higher than that of a regular single-ring sensor. By using the present digital optical sensor, it becomes convenient to use an integrated optical micro-spectrometer (even with a low resolution) to monitor the peak shift of the spectral response. Therefore, it is promising to realize a low-cost and portable highly-sensitive optical sensor system on a single chip.

Abstract:In this paper, we compare the sensing sensitivity, the stability and the temperature sensitivity of the micro-ring resonator optical sensor based on silicon waveguide and silicon nitride waveguide. For the silicon waveguide and silicon nitride waveguide single ring, the sensing sensitivities are 1113nm/RIU and 182.64nm/RIU, the resonance wavelength variations are ±12.5pm and ±7.5pm in an hour testing at the ambient temperature and the temperature sensitivities are 0.038nm/K and 0.018nm/K, respectively. . The sensing sensitivity can be improved to 6080.6nm/RIU by cascaded double silicon nitride waveguide rings to produce Vernier effect.

Abstract:A highly sensitive optical waveguide sensor based on simple intensity interrogation with a broadband light source is proposed and investigated. It consists of two cascaded microring resonators with the same or slightly different free spectral ranges. The variation of the refractive index of the analyte sample results in a large shift in the envelope function of the transmission peaks of the sensor, and, consequently, a large change in the transmitted power. The low-cost sensing scheme can achieve an ultrahigh sensitivity of 2 x 10(4) dB/RIU. Experimental results on the intensity interrogated double-ring sensor using a broadband source are presented, demonstrating its operation principle and potential for low-cost practical applications. Abstract:A highly-sensitive integrated optical biosensor based on two cascaded micro-rings resonator (MRR) is investigated theoretically and experimentally. The free spectral ranges (FSRs) of two cascaded micro-rings are designed to be slightly different in order to generate Vernier effect. A preliminary investigation of our sensor with a Q factor of 2×104 using different ethanol concentrations shows that the Vernier effect can improve the sensitivity to 1300nm per refractive index unit (RIU), compared to 62nm/RIU for a single ring sensor. The sensor also has a large measurement range of refractive index change up to 1.15×10−2 RIU. It can be useful for low-cost and highly-sensitive optical biosensor system.

Abstract:Silicon photonic biosensors based on cascaded resonators employing the Vernier effect are shown to be capable of greatly increasing the sensitivity. Two implementation schemes are presented, one using two cascaded ring resonators with a broadband light source, and the other by cascading a Fabry-Perot laser with a silicon ring resonator. Simple intensity interrogation schemes are developed to advance the planar waveguide sensor technology towards low-cost practical applications.

Abstract:Although the cascaded double ring sensor can improve the sensitivity due to the difference between the radii of the reference ring and the sensing ring to produce Vernier effect, a large bandwidth spectrometer or a large tunable range laser is required for the wavelength interrogation. In this paper, the cascaded double ring senor based on silicon on insulator (SOI) with thermo-optical tuning for refractive index sensing is investigated. The peak wavelength shift of the transmission envelope can be converted into the electric power change of the micro-heater. The sensitivity reaches 33.703×103 mW/RIU by fitting Gaussian function to the spectral envelope for the wavelength interrogation with 7.9 nm wavelength measurement range.

Abstract:We proposed and experimentally investigated a compact and ultra-sensitive integrated photonic current sensor based on a silicon ring resonator in this paper. The current flowing through the integrated resistive TiN heater produces the Joule's heat and changes the temperature, which results in the change of refractive index and physical dimensions of the ring. An optical spectrum analyzer is used to monitor the resonant wavelength shift of the ring. The experiment results show that the sensor achieves an ultra-high sensitivity of 6.8. x. 10(4) nm A(-2) and good linearity between real-time current and wavelength shift in the test range of 0-10 mA.

Abstract:A Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) coupled microring is demonstrated experimentally to obtain a high sensitivity as well as a large range for measuring change in refractive index. For the present MZI-coupled microring, there is a major resonance wavelength with a high extinction ratio (16-36 dB) in a very large wavelength span. Consequently, a very large quasi-free spectral range (> 120 nm) is achieved, which helps to obtain a large measurement range. The MZI-coupled microring sensor is used for measuring the change of the ambient refractive index ranging from 1.0 to 1.538, and the sensitivity is as high as 111 nm/refractive index unit. Abstract:An optical sensor based on the Vernier-cascade of a ring resonator and an echelle diffraction grating (EDG) demultiplexer is proposed and analyzed. Due to the difference between the free spectral range of the ring and the channel spacing of the EDG demultiplexer, the refractive index change of the analyte fluid on the ring can be detected by the power distribution among the channels of the EDG. By combining a coarse measurement and a fine measurement, a refractive index sensitivity in the order of 10(-6) RIU can be achieved. An optical sensor system can be realized by using a low-cost broadband light source and a detector array.
