Abstract:Summary form only given. Optical waveguide sensors based on silicon-on-insulator (SOI) nanowire have received great interest due to their potential applications in many fields including bacteria and virus detection, medical diagnostics, food quality control, environment monitoring, and drug development. Various types of SOI sensors have been developed, including Mach-Zehnder interferometer, microdisks and microring resonators. High-sensitivity sensors based on cascaded double-ring resonators and a Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) cascaded with a microring resonator employing Vernier effect have recently been proposed and experimentally demonstrated. Simple and low-cost intensity interrogation can be employed without using a high resolution spectrometer or a narrow line-width tunable laser. Label-free detection capability of these two types of SOI sensors have also been demonstrated. This talk reviews our work on the design, fabrication and measurement of SOI nanowire based high-sensitivity biosensors employing Vernier effect. Biosensing experiments using cascaded double-ring sensor and Mach-Zehnder-ring sensor integrated with microfluidic channels are also presented.

Abstract:A highly-sensitive integrated optical biosensor based on two cascaded micro-rings resonator (MRR) is investigated theoretically and experimentally. The free spectral ranges (FSRs) of two cascaded micro-rings are designed to be slightly different in order to generate Vernier effect. A preliminary investigation of our sensor with a Q factor of 2×104 using different ethanol concentrations shows that the Vernier effect can improve the sensitivity to 1300nm per refractive index unit (RIU), compared to 62nm/RIU for a single ring sensor. The sensor also has a large measurement range of refractive index change up to 1.15×10−2 RIU. It can be useful for low-cost and highly-sensitive optical biosensor system.

Abstract:Although the cascaded double ring sensor can improve the sensitivity due to the difference between the radii of the reference ring and the sensing ring to produce Vernier effect, a large bandwidth spectrometer or a large tunable range laser is required for the wavelength interrogation. In this paper, the cascaded double ring senor based on silicon on insulator (SOI) with thermo-optical tuning for refractive index sensing is investigated. The peak wavelength shift of the transmission envelope can be converted into the electric power change of the micro-heater. The sensitivity reaches 33.703×103 mW/RIU by fitting Gaussian function to the spectral envelope for the wavelength interrogation with 7.9 nm wavelength measurement range.

Abstract:A ring resonator based on Silicon-on-Insulator (SOI) planar optical waveguide for micro biochemical sensor application is designed and simulated in this paper. The SOI optical waveguide is made with a ridge structure. According to the optical waveguide mode theory and the performance of the ring resonator, the size of the single mode ridge waveguide and the structure of the ring resonator are obtained. Based on the structure principle and the transmission mechanism of electric field of the ring resonator, the power transfer function and the parametric equation of sensitivity are derived. As a result, the value of Q of the ring resonator can reach 10(3) magnitudes. At last, the structure and the transmission mechanism of electric field in the ring resonator are simulated in MATLAB software.

Abstract:Optical waveguide biosensors based on silicon-on-insulator (SOI) have been extensively investigated owing to its various advantages and many potential applications. In this article, we demonstrate a novel highly sensitive biosensor based on cascaded Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) and ring resonator with the Vernier effect using wavelength interrogation. The experimental results show that the sensitivity reached 1,960 nm/RIU and 19,100 nm/RIU for sensors based on MZI alone and cascaded MZI-ring with Vernier effect, respectively. A biosensing application was also demonstrated by monitoring the interaction between goat and antigoat immunoglobulin G (IgG) pairs. This integrated high sensitivity biosensor has great potential for medical diagnostic applications.

Abstract:A highly sensitive optical waveguide sensor based on simple intensity interrogation with a broadband light source is proposed and investigated. It consists of two cascaded microring resonators with the same or slightly different free spectral ranges. The variation of the refractive index of the analyte sample results in a large shift in the envelope function of the transmission peaks of the sensor, and, consequently, a large change in the transmitted power. The low-cost sensing scheme can achieve an ultrahigh sensitivity of 2 x 10(4) dB/RIU. Experimental results on the intensity interrogated double-ring sensor using a broadband source are presented, demonstrating its operation principle and potential for low-cost practical applications. Abstract:In this paper, we compare the sensing sensitivity, the stability and the temperature sensitivity of the micro-ring resonator optical sensor based on silicon waveguide and silicon nitride waveguide. For the silicon waveguide and silicon nitride waveguide single ring, the sensing sensitivities are 1113nm/RIU and 182.64nm/RIU, the resonance wavelength variations are ±12.5pm and ±7.5pm in an hour testing at the ambient temperature and the temperature sensitivities are 0.038nm/K and 0.018nm/K, respectively. . The sensing sensitivity can be improved to 6080.6nm/RIU by cascaded double silicon nitride waveguide rings to produce Vernier effect.

Abstract:A phase-interrogation approach for the bulk refractive index sensing based on a silicon-on-insulator (SOI) ring resonator is introduced. The rapid phase variation around the resonance of the ring resonator is interrogated, and a single-sideband generation and coherent detection technology is adopted for the phase measurement. In the proposed approach, most of the intensity noise can be shielded, which leads to an ultra-stable reading for the phase signals. A sensitivity of 6 × 103 rad/RIU and a detection limit of 2.5 × 10-6 RIU are demonstrated.

Abstract:Silicon photonic biosensors based on cascaded resonators employing the Vernier effect are shown to be capable of greatly increasing the sensitivity. Two implementation schemes are presented, one using two cascaded ring resonators with a broadband light source, and the other by cascading a Fabry-Perot laser with a silicon ring resonator. Simple intensity interrogation schemes are developed to advance the planar waveguide sensor technology towards low-cost practical applications.

Abstract:Wide-range optical sensors based on a single ring resonator are investigated theoretically and experimentally. The sensor worked at the TE and TM modes simultaneously. Because the sensitivities of the TE mode and TM mode are different, the TE mode is used for the large measurement range, and the TM mode is used for the high sensitivity measurement. The experimental results showed that the measurement range for the TE mode was almost three times larger than that of the TM mode. A sensitivity of 233 nm/RIU was achieved for the wavelength interrogation of the TM mode.

Abstract:A novel all-pass slot microring resonator (SMRR), intended for label-free optical biosensing based on silicon-on-insulator platforms, is proposed. The sensor consists of a bent asymmetric directional coupler and an asymmetric-slot microring waveguide. The appropriate slot width of 140 nm is identified by the three-dimensional finite-difference time-domain (3D-FDTD) method for better light–matter interaction in applications. According to numerical calculations, the SMRR sensor with a footprint of 10 μm × 10 μm has a concentration sensitivity of 725.71 pm/% for sodium chloride (NaCl) solutions. The corresponding refractive index sensitivity is 403 nm/RIU (refractive index unit), which is approximately six times greater than that of traditional microring resonator sensors. A low detection limit of 0.129% is also achieved. This SMRR is an excellent candidate for label-free optical biosensors due to its compact structure and excellent sensing capability.

Abstract:Silicon-based optical biosensors have garnered significant interest since their inception. They are, however, susceptible to temperature fluctuations in a controlled environment. In order to address this issue, we provide a solution including the utilization of a silicon-on-insulator (SOI) cascaded micro-ring resonators (CMRR) biosensor that is designed to be insensitive to temperature changes. It consists of two ring resonators exposed to the reference solution and analyte, respectively, their radius and waveguide width are designed to meet the temperature-insensitivity criterion of the CMRR sensor. The results of experiments indicate that by real-time monitoring of the envelope peak drift in the transmission spectrum of the sensor, the bulk refractive index (RI) sensitivity is 2940.71 nm/RIU, the limit of detection (LOD) is 3.1x10- 5 RIU, and the temperature sensitivity is less than 40 pm/degree celsius. Furthermore, the sensor was applied for HSA detection, with a calculated LOD of 18.09 ng/mL. The effect of temperature on HSA detection is much smaller than that of a CMRR sensor without athermal design. The sensor demonstrates high sensitivity and temperature insensitivity, and the absence of negative thermo-optic coefficient materials or supplementary temperature control mechanisms simplifies its practical applications. It can be made by a large array to detect different type protein molecules for high throughput multiparameter analysis.

Abstract:We report a refractive index sensing system with a high sensitivity of 1579 dB/RIU and a low refractive index detection limit of 9.7 x 10(-6) RIU. The sensing system was based on cascaded-microring resonators (CMRR) using intensity interrogation. The free spectrum range (FSR) for the reference ring was designed to be equal to the sensing ring. The sensing ring of the CMRR was modified with molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) for the detection of progesterone. The achieved limit of detection (LOD) was as low as 83.5 fg/mL. Abstract:In recent years, silicon-on-insulator substrates have been utilized for high-speed and low-power electronic components. Because of the high refractive index contrast of the silicon wire, its photonic device footprint can be significantly reduced. Moreover, the silicon photonic process is compatible with a complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor fabrication, which will benefit the high-density optoelectronic integrated circuits development. Researchers have recently proposed using the microring resonator (MRR) for label-free biosensing applications. The high-quality factor caused by the substantial electric field enhancement within the ring makes the MRR a good candidate for biomolecule detection under low analyte concentration conditions. This paper proposes an MRR chip to be a biosensor on the silicon platform through the relative displacement between the spatial ring-down interferograms at various cladding layers. The higher-order ring-down of the spatial interference wave packet will enhance the biosensing sensitivity after optimizing the coupling, MRR length, and the optical source bandwidth at the fixed optical waveguide loss. Finally, a typical sensitivity of 642,000 nm per refractive index unit is demonstrated under 0.1 μW minimum optical power detection for an MRR with a 100 μm radius. Higher sensitivity can be executed by a narrow bandwidth and lower silicon wire propagation loss.
