Dark Area Image Improvement of AC Plasma Display Panels by Sub-Field Dithering

Abstract:The subfield dithering technique was proposed to improve the image quality in the dark areas of an alternating current plasma display panel (AC PDP). In the technique the two subfields with smaller weight, which were originally used to display the grayscale images, were dithered by a newly-developed threshold matrix. In addition, the subfield dithering circuits were designed and constructed. The subfield dithering circuit and the traditional error diffusion circuit were tested in the 32-inch AC PDP, respectively. The test results show that the subfield dithering circuit outperforms the traditional error diffusion circuit at the lower grayscale expression capability and eliminates the striation noises in image processing.
