Abstract:Airborne microorganisms, which could cause many serious epidemic, threaten acceptable indoor air quality. After the long-time operation of central air conditioning system, ventilation filters in air handle units could be emission sources of airborne microbes due to propagation characteristic of microorganisms. Thus, it is necessary to study potential airborne microbes generated or reentrained from air filters. We designed two test systems to determine the penetration and disengagement of the bioaerosol from fibrous filter media. Escherichia coli was used as microbiological marker. The bioaerosols collected by air filters could reproduce on the filter media, penetrate through the filter media and arrive at the backsides. After certain life time of air filters, those microbes could spead into downstream. It is also found the disengagement number of bacteria is related to the ventilation time of air filter media.

Abstract:In Air-Condition(AC) systems, the filtration of airborne aerosol with filters is the most common way to control indoor air quality (IAQ). The microorganism could be removed with the dust in the filter. Once they were delivered into the room, the indoor air quality would be depressed. This paper summarizes the growth rule of bacteria on the filter, which based on the experiment of survival and reproduction of bacteria on the common fiberglass ventilation filter. Escherichia coli were used as a microbiological indicator. In addition, via adding nutriments to the filter, we have tried to simulate the influence on the growth of bacteria from the filter, which was used for a certain period. It is found that without the supply of nutriment, the bacteria could still propagate on the filter; while with the nutriments, a much more intense growth presents. During the experiment, the abundance of nutriment associates with the reproduction of bacteria as well as the secondary contaminant to the downstream-air quality. Cultured on the filter with bacteria after several weeks, the bacteria could still survive without dying out naturally in the filter media.

Abstract:Fungal spore resuspension on the surfaces of the heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) ducts have been verified as one of the most important factors causing indoor biological pollution. To effectively control indoor bioaerosols pollution, it is essential to understand the resuspension characteristics of fungal spores in HVAC ducts. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the movement behavior of particles and further the variation of particle resuspension with HVAC operation mode. Based on the experimental and numerical study, this study specifically investigated the micro-movement behavior of particles and impact of particle size (1, 4, 7 and 10 mu m), air temperature (9,15 and 30 degrees C), relative humidity (20, 50 and 80%), duct surface roughness (0.5 and 50 mu m) and air velocity (0.3, 0.9, 1.5 and 2.5 m/s) on the short-term resuspension of particle in horizontal HVAC ducts. Results indicate that spore particles were dominantly rolling off rather than sliding or being lifted into the air. Compared with larger particles, smaller ones were more sensitive to the wall roughness. The resuspension rate of spores was mainly affected by airflow velocity and particle size, where the resuspension rate of particles increased by up to six times with the increase of airflow velocity from 0.9 to 2.5 m/s. In comparison, either air temperature or relative humidity made negligible difference to particle resuspension rate. Overall, this study provides the knowledge of fungal spore resuspension in HVAC ducts, laying the foundation for effectively controlling the indoor biological pollution. (C) 2019 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:This study enhances the understanding of virus removal efficiency by filters, crucial for predicting respiratory disease transmission risk and guiding outbreak prevention. Current research often neglects the survival behaviour of pathogens. Addressing this, our research develops a novel approach anchored in medical experimental data. A mathematical model was established to depict the dynamic changes in particulate concentration within non-centralized air-conditioned rooms, considering indoor and outdoor concentrations, natural ventilation, and filter dynamics. The model's reliability was affirmed through particle and aerosolized pathogen filtration experiments, showing an R 2 value over 0.99, indicating strong agreement with empirical data. Analysis of filter operation, both with and without infection sources during epidemics, reveals that the use of split air conditioners and filters significantly reduces pathogen concentration. Pathogens trapped in filters undergo natural decay, considerably lowering transmission risk compared to airborne states. This research offers a scientifically grounded, precise methodology for evaluating respiratory disease transmission risks, contributing substantially to public health management.

Abstract:Airborne microorganisms cause many serious health problems. To control contamination and achieve acceptable indoor air quality (IAQ), it is necessary to study air filtration of bioaerosols systematically. The authors of this paper designed a test system to determine the removal efficiencies of fibrous air filter media for traditional nonbiological airborne particles (Dioctylphthalate, polystyrene latex, etc.) and bioaerosols. Escherichia coli and Serratia marcescens, generated by a Collison nebulizer, were used as two microbiological markers in evaluating the filtration efficiencies of air filter media. The removal efficiencies for challenge bioaerosols were compared with those of nonbiological particles of the same aerodynamic diameter. The efficiencies for the two kinds of aerosols were found to have similar characteristics, with the efficiency for the former generally found to be a little higher. A formula of a proposed filtration model for bioaerosols is suggested to roughly predict the filtration performance of the air filter medium. According to the experimental results, medium efficiency air filters are suitable for filtering biological particles in air-handling units. The filter efficiency measured with dioctylphthalate particles of 1 mu m is useful for predicting the removal efficiency of bioaerosols for the filter medium.

Abstract:The performance of fibrous air filter media is one of the key factors to influence the indoor air quality. In order to develop low-resistance and high-efficiency media, it is necessary to obtain a realistic media model. Based on the truncated log-normal model, the D2G9 scheme of Lattice Boltzmann (LB) method was applied to predict both the resistance and the filtration efficiency of the flow through microscale porous media. The influences of the boundary conditions were investigated. The slip and no-slip boundary conditions on fiber surfaces, as well as the non-equilibrium extrapolation scheme and the periodic scheme, were included in this study. By validating the simulated results with both the experimental and empirical values, it was found that the simulated resistance with the slip boundary on fiber surface and the periodic scheme on upper/lower walls was closer to the real value. The model established in this paper and the LB method presented here provide support for further research on optimization of the fibrous air filter media.

Abstract:Indoor air, especially with suspended particulate matter (PM), can be a carrier of airborne infectious pathogens. Without sufficient ventilation, airborne infectious diseases can be transmitted from one person to another. Indoor air quality (IAQ) significantly impacts people's daily lives as people spend 90% of their time indoors. An industrial-grade air cleaner prototype (filtration + ultraviolet light) was previously upgraded to clean indoor air to improve IAQ on two metrics: particulate matter (PM) and viable airborne bacteria. Previous experiments were conducted to test its removal efficiency on PM and airborne bacteria between the inlet and treated air. However, the longer-term improvement on IAQ would be more informative. Therefore, this research focused on quantifying longer-term improvement in a testing environment (poultry facility) loaded with high and variable PM and airborne bacteria concentrations. A 25-day experiment was conducted to treat indoor air using an air cleaner prototype with intermittent ON and OFF days in which PM and viable airborne bacteria were measured to quantify the treatment effect. The results showed an average of 55% reduction of total suspended particulate (TSP) concentration between OFF days (110 μg/m3) and ON days (49 μg/m3). An average of 47% reduction of total airborne viable bacteria concentrations was achieved between OFF days (∼3200 CFU/m3) and ON days (∼2000 CFU/m3). A cross-validation (CV) model was established to predict PM concentrations with five input variables, including the status of the air cleaner, time (h), ambient temperature, indoor relative humidity, and day of the week to help simulate the air-cleaning effect of this prototype. The model can approximately predict the air quality trend, and future improvements may be made to improve its accuracy.

Abstract:Airborne particles can spread quickly and enter human respiratory system via inhalation, causing chronic diseases, even cancer. Although recent studies have informed of toxicity of various pollutants, understanding the transport and deposition characteristics of particles in lower respiratory tract is still challenging. The current study proposes a novel model to simulate flow field change from the entrance of lower respiratory tract to pulmonary acinus, while studying particle transport and deposition characteristics. This model for lower respiratory tract with several bronchial extensions containing virtual pulmonary acinus is calculated using computational fluid dynamics and dynamics mesh. The results showed that in the first 10 generations of the lower respiratory tract, vortices and gravity interfered with particles' trajectory, affecting particle deposition distribution. For the first to the tenth-generation respiratory tract, coarse particles were deposited throughout almost the whole respiratory tract model. In contrast, ultrafine particles did not deposit in the higher-generation respiratory tract. The particle enrichment ability of various lobes was uneven with three particle deposition fraction variation patterns. Virtual pulmonary acinus influenced particle deposition and distribution because of vortex ring's trapped ability during expansion and contraction. This new attempt to build a virtual pulmonary acinus model to simulate particle deposition effects in human respiratory system may provide a reference for studying the toxicities of inhalable particles in the exposed human body.

Abstract:An experimental setup has been designed and fabricated for the analysis of filtration performance of the metal fiber filter as applied to Filtered Containment Venting System(FCVS).The main characteristic of this test facility is the presence of the aerosol and Scanning Mobility Particle Sizer. The objective is to investigate the removal performance of the metal fiber filter for aerosol, as well as further understand the filtration process in the metal fiber filter. It is observed that the metal fiber filter is capable of removing more than 99.955% aerosols at the desired flow rate ranging from 0.17 m/s to 0.3 m/s and the resistance has a significant linear correlation with flow rate. Due to the electrostatic effect, diffusion effect, inertia effect, interception effect and gravity effect, most penetrating particle size plays a significant role in removal performance of the metal fiber filter for aerosol. It is also found that with aerosol size - ranging from 0.1 mu m to 0.311m in most penetrating particle size, the filtration efficiency is more than 99.8% at the flow rate of 0.25 m/s. From this study, valuable reference data and useful information are provided for practical applications.

Abstract:Fibrous filters play a crucial role in determining indoor air quality and protect people from bacteria, particulates, and viruses such as COVID-19. However, there is a lack of comprehensive research on methods for effectively evaluating and predicting the operating performance of these filters. In this study, we conducted laboratory and field tests on coarse (G4) and medium (F9 or F7) filters from four different brands to assess both their initial and operating performance. We discovered that a fluffy fiber structure in coarse filters could achieve an impressive threefold increase in dust holding capacity (DHC) compared to normal filters. Utilizing initial pressure drop, initial particle capture efficiency, and DHC, we introduced a new quality factor (QF) that integrates these parameters to evaluate the filter's long-term performance. This approach addresses the limitations of traditional quality factor, which neglects DHC and tends to underestimate the performance of filters with high DHC. Additionally, we proposed a simple method to predict the filter's operating pressure drop, using particle concentration data from weather report. This allows for convenient assessment of the fresh air system's operating status, offering potential integration into a user-friendly mobile application or computer software. These findings contribute innovative ideas for enhancing the intelligent and energy-efficient operation of fresh air systems.

Abstract:Aerosol particles are regarded as one of the most significant pollutants in the indoor environment. These particles can travel through ventilation systems, thus impacting indoor air pollution. Accurate modeling and prediction of aerosol particle transport in ventilation systems is therefore a key component of indoor particle pollution. Since recycled air takes particles into the ventilation system again, it can be challenging to calculate the particle concentration in each part of the system. This study theoretically and experimentally proves that the entire ventilation system, including filters, ventilation ducts and ventilation rooms, can be regarded as a serial of filters in steady-state cases. We call this the particle filter group model. Equations are presented to calculate the particle concentration in each component of normal kinds of mechanical ventilation systems. With this model, the particle concentration and deposited particle quantity in each part of the ventilation system can be easily calculated. This model may help to control indoor particle pollution and guide the cleaning of ventilation ducts and filters.

Abstract:Airborne contaminants such as pathogens, odors and CO2 released from an individual passenger could spread via air flow in an aircraft cabin and make other passengers unhealthy and uncomfortable. In this study, we introduced the airflow vortex structure to analyze how airflow patterns affected contaminant transport in an aircraft cabin. Experimental data regarding airflow patterns were used to validate a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model. Using the validated CFD model, we investigated the effects of the airflow vortex structure on contaminant transmission based on quantitative analysis. It was found that the contaminant source located in a vorticity-dominated region was more likely to be "locked" in the vortex, resulting in higher 62% higher average concentration and 14% longer residual time than that when the source was on a deformation dominated location. The contaminant concentrations also differed between the front and rear parts of the cabin because of different airflow structures. Contaminant released close to the heated manikin face was likely to be transported backward according to its distribution mean position. Based on these results, the air flow patterns inside aircraft cabins can potentially be improved to better control the spread of airborne contaminant.

Abstract:Dust particle which includes corpses and feces of the mite, animal dander, cockroaches, and mould spores can reach the lung of human and then trigger asthma disease easily. In this research, experimental studies were carried out in order to examine particle removal efficiency in a room with two ventilation systems: a ceiling exhaust system and a slit exhaust system. The results indicated that there was no clear relationship between removal efficiency and two different outlet locations. Also, from the results after the decay, the particle count in the case of the ceiling exhaust was higher than that in the case of the slit exhaust.

Abstract:It is common for people to use N95 filtering facepiece respirators (FFRs) in daily life, especially in locations where particulate matter (PM2.5) concentration is rising. Wearing N95 FFRs is helpful to reduce inhalation of PM2.5. Although N95 FFRs block at least 95% of particles from the atmosphere, the deadspace of N95 FFRs could be a warm, wet environment that may be a perfect breeding ground for bacterial growth. This work studies the micro-climate features including the temperature distribution and water vapor condensation in the deadspace of an N95 FFR using the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method. Then, the temperature and relative humidity inside the same type of N95 FFR are experimentally measured. There is a good agreement between the simulation and experimental results. Moreover, an experiment is conducted to study the distribution of bacteria sampled from the inner surface of an N95 FFR after donning.

Abstract:As the fast development of industry, clean air quality environment are needed in more manufactory fields. Filter media is the key material for high efficiency filtration. In this paper, glass fiber filter and PTFE membrane filter are studied with filtration test. The results show that glass fiber filter has low porosity, lead to lower penetration and higher resistance than PTFE filter. Penetration of filters decrease with mass load increasing and face velocity decreasing. Resistance increase with mass loading and face velocity increasing.

Abstract:Ventilation air filters are the most commonly means to effectively filter the biological particles. In order to evaluate the performances of bioaerosol filtration devices and media, the choice of performance test methods and characteristic bioaerosol markers are most important factors. We studied the filter media performance with the commonly used Escherichia coli and Serratia marcescens as airborne bio-particle challenges. We used seven different kinds of filter media to measure their particle counting filtration efficiencies in the same standard filtration velocity. And we also used the Kowalski and William model to calculate the theoretical efficiencies of the two. The results show that the efficiency of S. marcescens has a better match with the theoretical result than E.coli. As on the ordinary agar culture, S. marcescens colonies appear bright red, which makes it easier to be detected with less counting error. We suggest taking S. marcescens as characteristic bioaerosol as the maker of bacteria in filtration performance evaluation.

Abstract:Improving aircraft environmental control systems could reduce the risk of airborne infectious disease transmission in aircraft cabins. The high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters used in the existing systems exhibit high pressure drop, which results in high consumption of energy and fuel. Nanofiber air filters fabricated by electrospinning can reduce pressure drop, but their performance in aircraft cabins is unknown. Therefore, this study experimentally investigated the interpersonal particle transport in an aircraft cabin mockup with nanofiber air filters. First, a full-scale, fully occupied, 7-row, single-aisle aircraft cabin mockup was constructed. Nanofiber filtration units were fabricated using the electrospinning technique. Under the well-sealed laboratory testing conditions, both the small-scale nanofiber and HEPA filter media exhibited a particle removal efficiency of around 99 %. The performance of nanofiber and HEPA filtration units installed in the environmental control system of the mockup was then measured. Finally, the interpersonal particle transport in the cabin was measured. The results show that the particle removal efficiency of the nanofiber filtration units installed in the environmental control system ranged from 64 to 72 % when the particle size was 0.3-0.4 μm, which primarily reflected the large air leakages associated with the filter installation. At the filter media level, the pressure drop across the nanofiber units in the mockup was 61-67 % lower than that across the HEPA units under the same airflow rate, which however may not necessarily translate into lower pressure drop for actual filters in aircraft due to the potentially different design in terms of media face area. The average normalized particle concentration in the breathing zones of fellow passengers in the cabin mockup with the nanofiber filtration units was by 0.23, 0.29, and 0.32, respectively, when the index passenger was seated at the window, middle, and aisle.

Abstract:Introduction Ventilation system filters process recirculated indoor air along with outdoor air. This function inspires the idea of using the filter as an indoor bioaerosol sampler. While promising, there remains a need to investigate several factors that could limit the accuracy of such a sampling approach. Among the important factors are the dynamics of microbial assemblages on filter surfaces over time and the differential influence of outdoor versus recirculated indoor air. Methods This study collected ventilation system filter samples from an air handling unit on a regular schedule over a 21-week period and analyzed the accumulation patterns of biological particles on the filter both quantitatively (using fluorometry and qPCR) and in terms of microbial diversity (using 16S rDNA and ITS sequencing). Results The quantitative result showed that total and bacterial DNA accumulated monotonically, rising to 41 ng/cm2 for total DNA and to 2.8 ng/cm2 for bacterial DNA over the 21-week period. The accumulation rate of bacterial DNA correlated with indoor occupancy level. Fungal DNA first rose to 4.0 ng/cm2 before showing a dip to 1.4 ng/cm2 between weeks 6 and 10. The dip indicated a possible artifact of this sampling approach for quantitative analysis as DNA may not be conserved on the filter over the months-long service period. The sequencing results indicate major contributions from outdoor air for fungi and from recirculated indoor air for bacteria. Despite the quantitative changes, the community structure of the microbial assemblages was stable throughout the 21-week sampling period, highlighting the robustness of this sampling method for microbial profiling. Conclusion This study supports the use of ventilation system filters as indoor bioaerosol samplers, but with caveats: 1) an outdoor reference is required to properly understand the contribution of outdoor bioaerosols; and 2) there is a need to better understand the persistence and durability of the targeted organisms on ventilation system filters.
