Abstract:The airliner cabin environment is very important to the health of passengers and crew members, and the use of high‐efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters for recirculated air in the environmental control systems (ECS) is essential for the removal of airborne particles such as SARS CoV‐2 aerosols. A HEPA filter should be high efficiency, low‐pressure drop, high dust‐holding capacity (DHC), lightweight, and strong for use in aircraft. We conducted an experimental study on 23 HEPA filters with glass fiber media that are used in different commercial airliner models. The tested filters had a median filtration efficiency of >99.97% for particles with a diameter of 0.3–0.5 μm, a pressure drop of 134–412 Pa at rated airflow rate, and a DHC of 32.2–37.0 g/m2. The use of nanofiber media instead of glass fiber media can reduce the pressure drop by 66.4%–94.3% and significantly increase the quality factor by analysis of literature data. The disadvantages of poor fire resistance and small DHC can be overcome by the use of flame‐retardant polymers and fiber structural design. As a new lightweight and environmentally friendly filter material, nanofiber media could be used as air filters in ECS in the future.

Abstract:Effective infection prevention and control measures are required in the intensive care units of hospitals, as these areas have a high incidence of nosocomial infections. Adopting proper ventilation pattern that is efficient in pollutant removal is important for controlling the spread of infectious diseases. In this study, the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation approach is used to investigate the airflow pattern, fates of respiratory particles, and patients' intake fraction in a four-bed model intensive care unit under three types of ventilation: impinging jet ventilation and two forms of mixing ventilation. The results show that in contrast to mixing ventilation, the airflow trend of impinging jet ventilation is consistent with the thermal plume of the human body. Accordingly, impinging jet ventilation can efficiently remove pollutants at the ceiling level, thereby reducing cross-infection. Our results also show that fine particles are greatly affected by the ventilation pattern, whereas large particles are primarily removed by surface deposition. The maximum intake fraction of susceptible patients under the three types of ventilation are 8.24 x 10-5 (impinging jet ventilation); 4.5 x 10-4 (ceiling air ventilation; a type of mixing ventilation) and 5.3 x 10-4 (side air ventilation; a type of mixing ventilation). Impinging jet ventilation appears to be the most effective ventilation system for removing particles and reducing susceptible patients' intake fraction under our investigated scenarios, and exhibits great potential as a ventilation method in intensive care units.

Abstract:During the COVID-19 pandemic, exposure to particles exhaled by infected passengers in commercial aircraft cabins has been a great concern. Currently, aircraft cabins adopt mixing ventilation. However, complete mixing may not be achieved, and thus the particle concentration in the respiratory zone may vary from seat to seat in a cabin. To evaluate the particle exposure in a typical single-aisle aircraft cabin, this investigation constructed an aircraft cabin mockup for experimental tests. Particles were released from a single source or dual sources at different seats to represent particles exhaled by infected passengers. The particle concentrations in the respiratory zones at various seats were measured and compared. The particle exposure was evaluated in both a cross section and a longitudinal section. Leaving the middle seat vacant to reduce particle exposure was also addressed. In addition, the velocity fields and air temperatures were measured to provide a better understanding of particle transport. It was found that the particle exposure at the window seat is always the lowest, regardless of the particle release locations. If the passenger seated in the middle does not release particles, his/her presence enhances the particle dispersion and thereby reduces the particle exposure for adjacent passengers. In the cabin mockup, the released particles can be transported across at least four rows of seats in the longitudinal direction.

Abstract:The commercial airliner cabin environment is very important for passengers and crew, and airflow and contaminant concentration distributions in cabins play a key role in creating a comfortable and healthy cabin environment. To study the airflow and the contaminant concentration distributions in airliner cabins, this investigation used a seven-row aircraft cabin mockup with well-controlled thermo-fluid boundary conditions. This study measured air temperature and velocity distributions with displacement ventilation by using T-type thermocouples and ultrasonic anemometers (UA), and contaminant distributions by using tracer gas and particle from a generator to simulate contaminant breathed out by a passenger. This paper discusses our effort to control the thermo-fluid boundary conditions with high accuracy. The measured results show that the air temperature was stratified and the air velocity was low. The contaminant was not transported to the other side of the cabin by the displacement ventilation system and was removed effectively through the ceiling exhaust. The Richardson number (Ri) indicated that the airflow was dominated by natural convection. However, the vertical temperature stratification may create discomfort for passengers.

Abstract:Recurrent epidemics of respiratory infections have drawn attention from the academic community and the general public in recent years. Aircraft plays a pivotal role in facilitating the cross-regional transmission of pathogens. In this study, we initially utilized an Airbus A320 model for computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations, subsequently validating the model's efficacy in characterizing cabin airflow patterns through comparison with empirical data. Building upon this validated framework, we investigate the transport dynamics of droplets of varying sizes under three air supply velocities. The Euler-Lagrangian method is employed to meticulously track key parameters associated with droplet transport, enabling a comprehensive analysis of particle behavior within the cabin environment. This study integrates acquired data into a novel PCR (Personal Contamination Rate) equation to assess individual contamination rates. Numerical simulations demonstrate that increasing air supply velocity leads to enhanced stability in the movement of larger particles compared to smaller ones. Results show that the number of potential infections in the cabin decreases by 51.8% at the highest air supply velocity compared to the base air supply velocity, and the total exposure risk rate reduced by 26.4%. Thus, optimizing air supply velocity within a specific range effectively reduces the potential infection area. In contrast to previous research, this study provides a more comprehensive analysis of droplet movement dynamics across various particle sizes. We introduce an improved method for calculating the breathing zone, thereby enhancing droplet counting accuracy. These findings have significant implications for improving non-pharmacological public health interventions and optimizing cabin ventilation system design.
Numerical Simulations of Interpersol Aerosol Transport in a Single-Aisle Aircraft Cabin

Abstract:Traditionally, air is supplied to an aircraft cabin either by individual nozzles or by supply slots. Air is expected to be fully mixed in the cabin, and the system is considered to be a mixing ventilation system. This study aims to investigate the transport characteristics of human expiratory aerosols among passengers, when the aircraft cabin is ventilated under different air distribution concepts. Four breathing thermal manikins, simulating four passengers, are located in a full-scale left side section of a single-aisle (Boeing 737) cabin with four seats. When one manikin functions as an index patient, the other three manikin’s exposure are profiled when the aircraft cabin is ventilated under displacement ventilation concept, mixing ventilation concept, downward ventilation concept combining with personalized ventilation. The CFD model is validated in cases when aerosols from index patient exhalation are traced by tracer gas N2O. Preliminary results that base on tracer gas reveal that displacement ventilation and downward ventilation concept both result in lower exposure compared to mixing ventilation. Personalized ventilation in all passenger seats does not reduce exposure at flow rates up to 4 L/s per person. Numerical simulations using NaCl solution droplets with internal suspended particles are undergoing. Droplets will shrink to a smaller size due to evaporation. Dispersion of droplet and droplet nuclei will be profiled and compared between scenarios with different ventilation concepts. Recommendations will be addressed for design of the air distribution system in such an aircraft cabin.
A Simplified Method for Assessing Particle Deposition Rate in Aircraft Cabins

Abstract:Particle deposition in aircraft cabins is important for the exposure of passengers to particulate matter, as well as the airborne infectious diseases. In this study, a simplified method is proposed for initial and quick assessment of particle deposition rate in aircraft cabins. The method included: collecting the inclined angle, area, characteristic length, and freestream air velocity for each surface in a cabin; estimating the friction velocity based on the characteristic length and freestream air velocity; modeling the particle deposition velocity using the empirical equation we developed previously; and then calculating the particle deposition rate. The particle deposition rates for the fully-occupied, half-occupied, 1/4-occupied and empty first-class cabin of the MD-82 commercial airliner were estimated. The results show that the occupancy did not significantly influence the particle deposition rate of the cabin. Furthermore, the simplified human model can be used in the assessment with acceptable accuracy. Finally, the comparison results show that the particle deposition rate of aircraft cabins and indoor environments are quite similar.
Performance optimization of airliner cabin air filters

Abstract:This study aims to design a cabin air filter with a high dust loading performance that is suitable for functioning under haze conditions. A longitudinal comparison study was carried out on the initial filtration performance and resistance change rate during the dust holding process of real cabin air filters with different structures (V-shape, Cylinder and Pleat-Plate filters). It was found that the Cylinder filter was better than the other two in terms of the initial quality factor and resistance change rate during operation. Based on the measured data, a calculation model was developed to predict the service life of the filter. The Cylinder filter shows a service life that is 17% longer than that of the V-shape filter. The energy consumption of the Cylinder filter over 6000 flight hours is lower than that of the V-shape and Pleat-Plate filters. Through the flow field analysis based on the filter structure, a preliminary qualitative analysis of the difference in filter performance is provided. For the Cylinder filter, the airflow steering and unique pleat structure enhance the dust holding capacity. We believe that the Cylinder filter is more suitable for areas with a high PM10 concentration in the atmospheric environment, such as China.

Size-Dependent Removal Efficiency of Mechanical Ventilation System with Air Filtration Unit for Nanoparticles

Abstract:Ultrafine particles (UFPs) are produced by human activities in outdoor and indoor environments. It is important to control indoor UFPs for their health effects on human and long duration that people spend indoors. Filtration is important in mechanical ventilation system for UFP removal to reduce human exposure to UFPs. The filtration efficiency for particle removal depends on particle diameter. Thus, we selected nine respective filters and their combinations to measure size-dependent efficiencies for UFP removal and the pressure drops. The 4th-order polynomial equations were developed from fitting results. The total efficiencies for UFP removal were estimated based on the polynomial equations and the measured size distributions of ambient UFPs. The total efficiencies for UFP removal and pressure drops of combinations of fine filters are comparable to those of a single HEPA filter. The application of combinations of fine filters needs further study in the future. The filtration efficiencies of these filters are relatively low, which may be caused by the lack of good tightness and need to be improved in the future.
Experimental studies of particle removal and probability of COVID-19 infection in passenger railcars

Abstract:A series of experiments in stationary and moving passenger railcars was conducted to measure the removal rates of particles in the size ranges of SARS-CoV-2 viral aerosols, and the air changes per hour provided by the existing and modified air handling systems. The effect of ventilation and air filtration systems on removal rates and their effects on estimated probability (i.e., risk) of infection was evaluated in a range of representative conditions: (1) for two different ratios of recirculated air (RA) to outdoor air (OA) (90:10 RA:OA and 67:33 RA:OA); (2) using minimum efficiency reporting value (MERV) filters with standard (MERV-8) and increased (MERV-13) filtration ratings; and (3) in the presence and absence of a portable high-efficiency particulate-air (HEPA) room air purifier system operated at clean air delivery rate (CADR) of 150 and 550 cfm. The higher-efficiency MERV-13 filters significantly increased particle removal rates on average by 3.8 to 8.4 hr-1 across particle sizes ranging from 0.3 to 10 µm (p < 0.01) compared to MERV-8 filters. The different RA:OA ratios and the use of a portable HEPA air purifier system had little effect on particle removal rates. MERV-13 filters reduced the estimated probability of infection by 42% compared to the MERV-8 filter. The use of a HEPA-air purifier with a MERV-13 filter causes a 50% reduction in the estimated probability of infection. Upgrading the efficiency of HVAC filters from MERV-8 to MERV-13 in public transit vehicles is the most effective exposure control method resulting in a clear reduction in the removal rates of aerosol particles and the estimated probability of infection.
Source Apportionment of Airborne Particles in Commercial Aircraft Cabin Environment: Contributions from Outside and Inside of Cabin

Abstract:Airborne particles are an important type of air pollutants in aircraft cabin. Finding sources of particles is conducive to taking appropriate measures to remove them. In this study, measurements of concentration and size distribution of particles larger than 0.3 mu m (PM>0.3) were made on nine short haul flights from September 2012 to March 2013. Particle counts in supply air and breathing zone air were both obtained. Results indicate that the number concentrations of particles ranged from 3.6 x 10(2) counts L-1 to 1.2 x 10(5) counts L-1 in supply air and breathing zone air, and they first decreased and then increased in general during the flight duration. Peaks of particle concentration were found at climbing, descending, and cruising phases in several flights. Percentages of particle concentration in breathing zone contributed by the bleed air (originated from outside) and cabin interior sources were calculated. The bleed air ratios, outside airflow rates and total airflow rates were calculated by using carbon dioxide as a ventilation tracer in five of the nine flights. The calculated results indicate that PM>0.3 in breathing zone mainly came from unfiltered bleed air, especially for particle sizes from 0.3 to 2.0 mu m. And for particles larger than 2.0 mu m, contributions from the bleed air and cabin interior were both important. Characterizing in-cabin air quality and vehicular air filtering performance for passenger cars in China

Abstract:The rapidly growing vehicle population has become a crucial contributor to severe air-pollution and public health issues. In urban areas, vehicles have become one of the important sources of air pollutants such as nitrogen oxides and fine particulate matter (PM2.5). In particular, the on-road concentrations of traffic-related air pollutants (TRAPs) are typically many times higher than normal ambient concentrations, potentially leading to high in-vehicle exposure levels to TRAPs. Limited studies have focused on the variability in in-vehicle concentrations of TRAPs and linked the pollution level to both out-cabin conditions and the in-cabin filtration performance during real-world travels. Therefore, this study measured on-roadway, in-cabin concentrations of PM2.5 and carbon dioxide (CO2) by using well-calibrated low-cost sensors during various conditions. Our results indicate that, although in-cabin PM2.5 concentrations are correlated to out-cabin PM2.5 concentration levels, the control efficiency would be affected by the ventilation mode and the adoption of vehicular filtration device. The PM2.5 reduction efficiencies could achieve 45% and 77% for in-use and new filters made by vehicle manufacturers respectively, with the average CO2 concentration remained at a safe level (<800 ppm) under the in-vehicle outside air ventilation. The application of a high-efficiency cabin air (HECA) filter can further enhance the PM2.5 filtration efficiency up to 85-96%, indicating the significance of advanced cabin air filtration technology for improving in-cabin air quality and reducing health risk of Chinese drivers.

Abstract:Particulate matter (PM) pollution has become a serious environmental concern. Nanofibrous filters are widely reported to remove PM from polluted air. Herein, efficient and lightweight PM air filters are presented using airflow synergistic needleless electrospinning composed of auxiliary fields such as an airflow field and a secondary inductive electric field. Compared to needleless electrospinning with other spinnerets, it significantly improves productivity, fiber diameter, and porosity of fibrous air filters. The instant noodle-like nanofiber structure can also be controlled by adjusting the airflow velocity. These air filters exhibit high (2.5 μm particulate matter) PM2.5 removal efficiency (99.9%) and high (0.3 μm particulate matter) PM0.3 removal efficiency (99.1%), low pressure drop (56 Pa for PM2.5 and 78 Pa for PM0.3 ), and large dust holding capacitance (the maximum value is 168 g m-2 for PM2.5 , while 102 g m-2 for PM0.3 ). Meanwhile, the proposed PM filters are also tested suitable and stable to other polluted air filtrations such as cigarette smoke and sawdust. The large-scale synthesis of such an attractive nanofiber structure presents the great potential of high-performance filtration/separation materials.

Abstract:Electrospinning is a versatile technique to fabricate nanofiber filters with high PM2.5 removal efficiency and relatively low pressure drop. The eletrospun nanofiber filters may therefore be applied in buildings to reduce indoor exposure to PM2.5 and the associated adverse health effects. This study investigated the influence of various filter parameters, including fiber diameter, filter thickness, and packing density, on the PM2.5 removal efficiency. In this work, 25 nylon electrospun nanofiber filters with different filter parameters were prepared, and the PM2.5 removal efficiency of each sample was measured at five different face velocities. In total, 125 sets of measured data were obtained. The results show that the PM2.5 removal efficiency of nylon electrospun nanofiber filters was negatively associated with the fiber diameter, and positively associated with the thickness of the filter. However, there was no clear correlation between PM2.5 removal efficiency and packing density. This investigation further developed a semi-empirical model for predicting the PM2.5 removal efficiency of nylon nanofiber filters. The accuracy of the model was satisfactory with a median relative error of 7.9%.

Abstract:Epidemiological studies have shown that exposure to airborne particles is strongly associated with human health. Air quality concerns in aircraft cabins increase as air travel is becoming more common. Analyzing factors that influence the concentrations of airborne particles and taking mitigating measures will protect human health during air travel. In this study, concentrations of particles larger than 0.3 mu m were measured in aircrafts' supply air in 9 flights. Air change rates were evaluated by the concentration of CO2 in supply air and recirculation air. Human emission, deposition and resuspension of particles were analyzed with our previously published results. The state-space method was used to calculate time-dependent particle concentration in different particle diameter intervals. Afterwards, with variation ranges of the 5 factors above, deviation rates of particle concentration were defined to evaluate the importance of those factors. This study determined: 1) resuspension is not an important factor, especially as time elapses; 2) varied deposition rate slightly influences particles smaller than 5.0 mu m; 3) air change rate and human emission rate strongly impact the concentration of particles smaller than 2.0 mu m; 4) supply air concentration generally affects the concentration of larger particles. Evaluating the commercial airliner cabin environment with different air distribution systems

Abstract:Ventilation systems for commercial airliner cabins are important in reducing contaminant transport and maintaining thermal comfort. To evaluate the performance of a personalized displacement ventilation system, a conventional displacement ventilation system, and a mixing ventilation system, this study first used the Wells-Riley equation integrated with CFD to obtain the SARS quanta value based on a specific SARS outbreak on a flight. This investigation then compared the three ventilation systems in a seven-row section of a fully occupied, economy-class cabin in Boeing 737 and Boeing 767 airplanes. The SARS quanta generation rate obtained for the index patient could be used in future studies. For all the assumed source locations, the passengers' infection risk by air in the two planes was the highest with the mixing ventilation system, while the conventional displacement ventilation system produced the lowest risk. The personalized ventilation system performed the best in maintaining cabin thermal comfort and can also reduce the infection risk. This system is recommended for airplane cabins.
PM2.5 and ultrafine particles in passenger car cabins in Sweden and northern China-the influence of filter age and pre-ionization

Abstract:The main aim of the study was to evaluate the influence of filter status (new and aged), pre-ionization, on the particle filtration in modern passenger cars. Measurements of in-cabin and outside PM2.5 (dp < 2.5 μm) concentration and UFP (ultrafine particle, dp < 100 nm) counts, to calculate I/O (indoor to outdoor) ratios, were performed. They were done at two locations, to study the influence of different outside conditions on the HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning) system. The measurements were performed in two new cars, with similar HVAC systems and settings, using a new filter and an aged synthetic filter. Furthermore, an ionization unit was installed upstream of the filter in both cars. This enabled the study of filter status, with and without ionization, under common driving conditions. The results show that the HVAC system performances were very similar at the two locations, with average I/O ratios of 0.35-0.40 without ionization and 0.15-0.20 with ionization applied, although the outside conditions were considerably different. Furthermore, the aged filter clearly worsened the filtration ability. Considering the corresponding average PM2.5 I/O ratios in one location as an example, the average for the new filter was 0.20 and 0.60 for the aged filter. The corresponding UFP I/O ratios were 0.24 and 0.57. Other findings are that the aged filter with ionization reached a performance close to the new filter (without ionization), and that increased ventilation airflow and decreased recirculation degree, as expected, led to an increase in the I/O ratio for both particle sizes.
Prediction of particle deposition around the cabin air supply nozzles of commercial airplanes using measured in-cabin particle emission rates

Abstract:Enhanced soiling on the surfaces around air supply nozzles due to particle deposition is frequently observed in commercial airliners. The problem is worsened by severe outdoor air pollution and flight delays in China. The particles in an aircraft cabin originate from both outdoor and in-cabin sources. This study conducted measurements on multiple commercial flights to obtain particle emission rates from in-cabin sources. Additional experiments on a retired MD-82 airplane provided justification of the in-flight measurements. The in-cabin sources emitted more particles during boarding/deplaning than during meal servicing and sitting. The average PM2.5 emission rates were 7.2, 2.6, 1.9, and 1.8 (μg/min per person), respectively, during the boarding/deplaning, sitting on the ground, sitting in the air, and meal servicing. The corresponding PM10 emission rates were 15.4, 6.1, 5.3, and 5.4 (μg/min per person), respectively, for these four periods. The average particle emission rate from in-cabin sources varied seasonally and was the highest in winter. With the measured data, this investigation used a CFD model to predict the accumulation of particles deposited around the nozzles of an airplane, taking into account the flight routes and the outdoor particle concentrations at the airports where the airplanes were parked. For the most polluted airplane in China, the dirty spots/areas around the nozzles inside the airplane became visible after 6 months. The method proposed in this study can be used for any commercial airplane to predict the accumulation of particles deposited around the air supply nozzles.

Abstract:Bioaerosol filtration is crucial for improving indoor air quality and reducing cross-infection risk. It is necessary to conduct a comprehensive study on the bioaerosol filtration performance of air filters under different influencing factors. Firstly, this study proposed a standardized test scheme for the comprehensive evaluation of bioaerosol filtration performance. Additionally, the high-efficiency particulate air (H13) and medium-efficiency particulate air (F8) filters were evaluated in depth using Serratia marcescens bioaerosol, considering the face velocity, relative humidity (RH), and operating time. This study also investigated the impact of removing static electricity on the bioaerosol filtration efficiency (BFE) of F-filter materials. The pressure drop (Δ P ) value of H13-filter and the BFE of F8-filter were significantly affected by face velocity and RH. When the face velocity increased from 5 to 20 cm/s, the H13-filter maintained a BFE above 99%, while Δ P increased by 303 Pa. During a 90 min test, the maximum change in the BFE of the H13-filter was 0.80% and Δ P increased by 26 Pa. Conversely, the BFE of the F8-filter decreased by up to 12.21%, while Δ P increased by only 3 Pa. Higher RH resulted in more pronounced changes in BFE. After removing the static electricity from the F8-filter material, the BFE decreased significantly, with a maximum reduction of 25%. The results may provide valuable insights into the application of conventional filters in bioaerosol filtration and serve as a guide for the enhancement and optimization of filter design.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Airborne nanoparticles from vehicle emissions have been associated with adverse effects in people with pulmonary and cardiovascular disease, and toxicologic studies have shown that nanoparticles can be more hazardous than their larger-scale counterparts. Recirculating air filtration in automobiles and houses may provide a low-cost solution to reducing exposures in many cases, thus reducing possible health risks.OBJECTIVES: We investigated the effectiveness of recirculating air filtration on reducing exposure to incidental and intentionally produced airborne nanoparticles under two scenarios: while driving in traffic, and while generating nanomaterials using gas-phase synthesis.METHODS: We tested the recirculating air filtration in two commercial vehicles when driving in traffic, as well as in a nonventilation room with a nanoparticle generator, simulating a nanomaterial production facility. We also measured the time-resolved aerosol size distribution during the in-car recirculation to investigate how recirculating air filtration affects particles of different sizes. We developed a recirculation model to describe the aerosol concentration change during recirculation.RESULTS: The use of inexpensive, low-efficiency filters in recirculation systems is shown to reduce nanoparticle concentrations to below levels found in a typical office within 3 min while driving through heavy traffic, and within 20 min in a simulated nanomaterial production facility.CONCLUSIONS: Development and application of this technology could lead to significant reductions in airborne nanoparticle exposure, reducing possible risks to health and providing solutions for generating nanomaterials safely.
