Abstract:Air-clad silica nanofibers, named for their submicrometer diameters, have a large core–cladding index contrast for efficient optical confinement. For single-mode operation, these fibers are usually thinner than the wavelength of the light they carry and are therefore also called sub wavelength-diameter fibers. The small diameter of a nanofiber and the large core–cladding index contrast yield a number of interesting optical properties such as tight optical confinement, large evanescent fields, strong field enhancement, and large waveguide dispersions. A few techniques can be used to fabricate silica nanowires or nanofibers such as photo or electron beam lithography, chemical growth, and taper drawing of optical fibers. The taper-drawing method exhibits simplicity in fabrication and also the ability to fabricate nanofibers with extraordinary diameter uniformities, atomic-level surface smoothness, and long length that are difficult to achieve by any other means. The nanofibers obtained with the two-step taper-drawing techniques consist of three parts—a millimeters-long taper that is connected to the starting microfiber, a uniform nanofiber with a length up to tens of millimeters, and an abruptly tapered end that is usually several to tens of micrometers in length.

Abstract:By means of high-temperature physical drawing, glasses can be directly drawn into subwavelength-or nanometer-diameter fibers. As-fabricated nanofibers show excellent diameter uniformity and surface smoothness for low-loss optical wave guiding, and may exhibit a series of interesting properties such as tight optical confinement, evanescent guidance and high waveguide dispersion. These fibers provide promising building blocks for photonic applications in optical communications, optical sensing and nonlinear optics.

Abstract:Hydrogel-based optical waveguides have attracted extensive attention in optogenetics, implantable photomedicine, and biosensors due to their excellent biocompatibility and tissue-like modulus in compared with traditional SiO2-based rigid optical fibers. However, the existing ion-induced supramolecular assembly of alginate-based hydrogel optical fibers commonly lack of long-term stability due to poor mechanical property accompanied with swollen. In this paper, a novel catalytic surface polymerization method is developed based on a redox reaction mechanism to in situ grow robust and slippery cladding layer on a core poly(ethylene glycol) dimethacrylate (PEGDA) hydrogel fiber by using the alternative H-bonding poly(N -acryloyl glycinamide) (PNAGA) hydrogels. The resultant hydrogel optical fiber with core-cladding heterogeneous structure can achieve the desirable total reflection condition, leading to good light transmission and low light loss. The PNAGA cladding with robust H-bonding network endows the hydrogel optical fiber with high stability and outstanding lubrication in humid environment. More importantly, the hydrogel optical fiber possesses good tissue-like mechanical performance together with excellent biocompatibility, which shows the great advantages for biomedical applications in compared with traditional glass optical fibers. This work will broaden implantable hydrogel optical fibers in material design and structure processibility, promoting the use of hydrogel-based optical fibers in various applications. A technology for preparing core-sheath hydrogel optical fibers is developed using surface catalytic free radical initiated polymerization. This innovative technology is applicable to a wide range of hydrogel monomers initiated by free radicals. Compared with traditional optical fibers, the prepared hydrogel optical fibers have good stability in humoral environment, tissue-like modulus and good biocompatibility and lubricity.image

Abstract:A series of monodispersed silica microspheres with favourable sphericity and different diameters in the range 180-380 nm were prepared by adjusting the concentrations of tetraethylorthosilicate, ammonia, and deionised water by the Stober method. In different self-assembly conditions, the quality of silica photonic crystals on a polyester fabric substrate was investigated by field-emission scanning electron microscopy for the morphology of the crystal structures and by spectrometry for their stop band intensities. High-quality silica photonic crystals with a face-centred cubic (fcc) array on polyester fabrics were produced at a low evaporation rate by adopting a high-relative-humidity controlled condition with a medium mass fraction of colloidal silica, and exhibited brilliant and variable structural colours, depending on the photonic band gap regulated by the spherical size of the silica microspheres and the viewing angles.

Abstract:The monodisperse silica spheres with diameters of 200-350 nm were synthesized by hydrolysis of tetraethyl orthosilicate based on the Stober process, and silica colloidal crystals was fabricated with a vertical deposition self-assembly method. Scanning electron microscopy and optical transmission spectra were applied to characterize the structures and properties of the deposited films. Experimental results show that the silica spheres form a face-centered cubic structure and the film thickness can be manipulated by controlling the particle concentration. The distinct peaks of transmission spectra for colloidal layers depend on the size of the silica spheres, which are consistent with theoretical calculation according to Bragg’s law. The depth of the optical stop band can be tuned by varying the volume fraction of SiO2 particles in the colloidal suspension.

Abstract:Polystyrene microspheres with monodisperse particles are self-assembled on silk fabric with gravitational sedimentation method,thus photonic crystal structure is obtained.FESEM analysis is used to characterize the feature of photonic crystal structure on the surface of silk fabric after self-assembly and the interface state of matching of fabric and photonic crystal.Then,the assembly process of nanoparticle on silk fabric is inferred.The result shows that photonic crystal obtained by self-assembly of nanoparticle on silk fabric has three-dimensional surface and centered cubic structure.Self-assembly process first occurs in the gap between fibers,then on the fiber surface.Finally,a long-range and orderly photonic crystal structure forms.Smooth fiber/fabric surface is conducive to self-assembly of nanoparticle and establishment of photonic crystal structure.

Abstract:High-quality colloidal crystals with deep photonic band gap of up to 78% and steep photonic band edge of up to 5.2%∕nm are fabricated by only using the quasimonodisperse spheres with polydispersity of 2.5%–3.1%. By controlling the self-assembly of spheres in the neck region of a Bunsen flask under negative pressure, all the reported limits of the popular vertical deposition method are simultaneously solved, and the damage of the polydispersity, impurity, and surface roughness of spheres to the crystal quality is effectively reduced. Even the impure spheres with large polydispersity of up to 10% and the rough large silica@Ag core-shell particles can be assembled into the well-ordered structures. The superior assembly ability of colloidal spheres as well as the good optical quality demonstrated here may find their broad applications in nanoassembly, templating synthesis, optical, physicochemical applications, etc.

Abstract:Self-organization of colloidal spheres within a channel, of which a ID periodic groove substrate is used as the bottom substrate, is studied. We demonstrate that high-quality monolayer square symmetric colloidal crystals can be achieved only when the colloidal suspension drying front is set parallel to close-packing rows of a commensurate square lattice of the 1D periodic grooves. Experimental optical characterization and theoretical simulations of the samples are presented and discussed.

Abstract:The fabrication and characterization of silica colloidal crystal films self-assembled from suspension of monodisperse silica spheres are reported through different improvement on vertical deposition. Three vertical deposition methods on the crystal formation were compared in terms of microstructure and optical transmission measurements. The results show that both the temperature-controlled vertical deposition and the flow-controlled vertical deposition could gain closely packed structures as traditional method but with lower colloid consumption and shorter time of self-assembly. By adjusting the rate of solvent evaporation or the relative movement between the liquid-surface and substrate, it is possible to transfer monolayer or multilayer of silica colloidal crystals onto the substrates. The improved methods can be used for rapid deposition of high-quality colloidal crystal films over large surface area without any special equipment.

Abstract:Self-assembly of colloidal spheres confined within cells of different shapes formed with two slides under capillary forces are studied. It is found that by controlling the shape of the cell the curvature of the drying front can result in a significant effect on the self-organization process. A curved drying front formed within parallel slides is always associated with growth of colloidal crystal structures with a high density of disorder. We demonstrate that single-domain two-dimensional colloidal crystals with centimeter size can he grown under capillary forces under a straight drying front formed in a wedge-shaped cell. These findings are demonstrated by laser diffraction, microscopy imaging methods and off-normal optical transmission measurements. The present growth method should be of importance in expanding colloidal crystal applications in angle-resolved nanosphere lithography, as well as in preparation of high-quality quasi-three-dimensional plasmonic crystals.

Abstract:Colloidal crystals are fabricated on surface of cylinder by vertical deposition technique.An observation is carried out with microscope to characterize surface morphology of crystal and photonic gap is measured with optics test system.The role of evaporation temperature and radius of curvature are investigated.The test result shows that high quality colloidal crystals are fabricated on surface of cylinder at suitable temperature and consistency.

Abstract:Organic homostructures with tunable physiochemical properties were fabricated by simply changing the isomer molecules via the "cocrystal engineering" approach. The morphology of the cocrystals can be changed into rod-like or branched, with superior waveguide and multi-directional waveguide performance, respectively, which contributes to the realization of optical waveguide modules with integrated functions.

Abstract:In this work, we developed a novel and simple microfluidic method for the fabrication of self-assembled monodispersed photonic crystal microbeads with core-shell structures using solvent extraction. Monodispersed aqueous droplets encapsulating colloidal photonic crystal particles were produced in a T-junction microfluidic device, and the controlled transport of water from the aqueous droplets to the oil phase created spherical colloidal crystal microbeads with controlled shell-core structures by extraction-derived self-organization of the colloidal nanoparticles. While the solidification of colloidal particles from emulsion droplets in an oven took tens of hours, the present extraction-derived method reduces the time required for solidification to several minutes. Compared with recent microwave-assisted consolidation methods which showed a particle material dependency, our new method exhibited no such limitation. The results showed that the packing quality of colloidal crystals, which can be precisely controlled by adjusting the extraction rate and surfactant, was high enough to show photonic band-gap characteristics. The reflectance of our photonic microbeads responded precisely to any change in physical properties including the size of colloidal particles and refractive index. A mechanism of the extraction-derived self-assembly of colloidal particles was developed and then supposed by theoretical derivations and experimental results. Finally, the universality of the method was demonstrated by fabricating SiO2 photonic crystal microbeads.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a method to achieve large effective Soret coefficient in colloids by suitably mixing two different particles, e.g., silica beads and Fe3O4 nanoparticles. It is shown that the thermophoretic motion of Fe3O4 nanoparticles out of the heating region results in a large nonequlibrium depletion force for silica beads. Consequently, silica beads are driven quickly to the heating region, forming a three-dimensional crystal with few defects and dislocations. The binding of silica beads is so tight that a colloidal photonic crystal can be achieved after the complete evaporation of solvent, water. Thus, for fabrication of defect free colloidal PCs, periodic structures for molecular sieves, among others, the proposed technique could be a low cost alternative. In addition as we use biocompatible materials, this technique could be a tool for biophysics studies where the potential of large effective Soret coefficient could be useful.

Abstract:High-aspect-ratio square optical fiber arrays enable massive applications from nanoscale to mesoscale, while fabrication is becoming a challenge. Here, a simple and inexpensive method is proposed based on capillary-induced self-assembly and tailored external constraints. The steady-state solution of the liquid morphology equation indicates that the interaction between optical fibers and liquid drives the array into shapes with lower free energy. Therefore, a well-designed external constraint, which affects the balance between capillarity and elastic restoration, can regulate the final arrangement of the optical fibers. Based on the dynamic analyses of the droplet-to-column transitions, liquid flow along optical fibers, and approach of optical fiber driven by liquid bridge and viscous damping, the factors influencing the capillary-induced self-assembly process are investigated, and the fabrication conditions are thus optimized. Experimental results verified the proposed method. The fabricated vector tactile sensing probe achieves a square array with aspect ratios of similar to 135. Its displacement resolutions in three dimensions are proven better than 60 nm.

Abstract:High quality colloidal photonic crystals made from polystyrene spheres with diameter 240 nm are fabricated by the vertical deposition method. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and the transmittance spectrum are used to characterize the properties of the photonic crystal. The SEAT images show that there are few lattice defects. The transmittance of the photonic crystal is above 75% in the pass band at 700 nm and is lower than 5% at the centre of the band gap, respectively. It is found that proper concentration is a very important factor to fabricate the photonic crystal when the diameter of the spheres is lower than 300 nm.

Abstract:Colloidal photonic crystals with uniform orientation and high surface coverage are produced by applying centrifugal force during the depletion‐induced assembly of polystyrene particles. This force encourages the particles to move toward the bottom surface, facilitating heterogeneous nucleation and rapid unidirectional crystal. These high‐quality colloidal crystals enable band‐edge lasing with a narrow spectral emission. Attractive depletion interactions are utilized to organize colloidal particles into crystalline arrays with high crystallinity through spontaneous phase separation. However, uncontrolled nucleation frequently leads to the formation of crystalline grains with varied crystal orientations, which hampers the optical performance of photonic crystals. Here, colloidal crystals have been engineered with uniform orientation and high surface coverage by applying centrifugal force during the depletion‐induced assembly of polystyrene particles. The centrifugal force encourages the particles to move toward the bottom surface, which fosters heterogeneous nucleation and supports rapid crystal growth, yielding densely‐packed and uniformly‐arranged crystal grains with high reflectivity. This study has observed that the nucleation and crystal growth behavior is significantly influenced by the salt concentration. Based on the pair potentials, the transition boundary has been quantitatively analyzed between fluid and crystal phases and identified the threshold for homogeneous nucleation. Utilizing the high‐reflectivity colloidal crystals, band‐edge lasing is achieved by dissolving the water‐soluble dye into the aqueous suspensions. Upon optical excitation, a lasing emission characterized is observed by a narrow spectral width at the short‐wavelength band edge. Notably, the laser wavelength can be adjusted by altering the salt concentration or particle diameter, offering a versatile approach to tuning the optical properties.

Abstract:Nano/micro fibers doped with metal nanocrystals are of great interest both theorectically and practically. Nevertheless, the ordered assembly of metal nanocrystals with desired patterns in nano/micro fibers still remains a big challenge, which constrains the further development of the performance of the material. In this investigation, we propose a facile strategy based on the sol-gel and coaxial electrospinning technique to fabricate silica submicron fibers incorporating ordered 1D array of silver nanoparticles. The silver nanoparticles align strictly in a head-to-tail manner in silica fibers, and their size, shape and population are conveniently controlled through tailoring the properties of the precursor solutions and the electrospinning parameters. Therefore, the plasmon property of the obtained fibers is tuned with great freedom. The fabrication method applied here holds great potential for low-cost preparation of metal/glass composite fibers for nano/micro optical applications in general.

Abstract:In order to form a well-ordered structure of SiO2 photonic crystals on polyester fabrics with fewer defects, a series of influential factors such as particle size and monodispersity of colloidal microspheres, evaporation temperature, relative humidity, mass fraction of colloidal microspheres and solvent in vertical deposition assembly were deeply studied, and the complexities of the self-assembly process of colloidal microspheres on polyester fabric substrates were revealed. In different self-assembly conditions, the quality of SiO2 photonic crystals on polyester fabric substrate was investigated by field emission scanning electron microscopy for the morphology of the crystal structures and by spectrometer measurements for their stop band intensities. Under the conditions of suitable sizes and monodispersity (PDI0.08) of colloidal microspheres, the high-quality SiO2 photonic crystals with face centered cubic (fcc) array on polyester fabrics were produced at a low evaporation rate by adopting relative humidity of about 60% with a medium mass fraction of 1.0-1.5% SiO2 microspheres at 25? with ethanol as the solvent.
