Abstract:A recycling process including separation of electrode materials by ultrasonic treatment, acid leaching, Fe-removing, precipitation of cobalt, nickel, manganese and lithium has been applied successfully to recycle spent lithium-ion batteries and to synthesize LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2, When ultrasonic treatment with 2-nitroso-4-methylphenol(NMP) at 40 degrees C for 15 min, the electrode materials are separated completely. Above 99% of Co, Ni, Mn and Li, 95% of Fe in the separated electrodes are acid-leached in the optimized conditions of 2 mol/L H2SO4, 1:2 H2O2:H2SO4 (molar ratio), 70 degrees C, 1:10 initial S:L ratio, and 1 h. 99.5% of Fe and less than 1% of Co, Ni, Mn in the leaching solution can be removed in the conditions of initial pH value 2.0-2.5 adjusted by adding 18% Na2CO3, 90 degrees C and stirring time 3 h. After adjusted to be equal by adding NiSO4, CoSO4 and MnSO4 solution, 97.1% of Ni, Co, Mn in the Fe-removing surplus leaching solution can be recovered as Ni1/3Co1/3Mn1/3(OH)(2), 94.5% of Li in the surplus filtrate after the deposition of Co, Ni and Mn can be recovered as Li2CO3. The LiNi1/3CO1/3Mn1/3O2, prepared from the recovered compounds, is found to have good characteristics of the layered structure and elecrtochemical performance.
Innovative Electrochemical Strategy to Recovery of Cathode and Efficient Lithium Leaching from Spent Lithium-Ion Batteries

Abstract:Recycling of spent lithium-ion batteries is of great importance for environmental protection and resusing resources. This work proposes a green and environmentally friendly recycling strategy of LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2 cathode material for spent batteries by an electrochemical method. In the designed electrolysis cell, the produced gaseous species from oxidation of solvent molecules occurring at the interfaces between electrode/cathode materials and active particles/binder exert the force to separate bonded particles from current collector. Meanwhile, the efficient leaching of lithium (>98%) into electrolyte was achieved under an electric field without additional leaching process. The Al can also be recovered in the form of metallic foil. The separation of active material, the selective leaching of lithium, and recovery of Al foil are conducted by one-step electrolysis in a short operating cycle. The remaining transition metals in residues were reused to synthesize LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2 material. As the cathode material, the regenerated active material delivers an initial capacity of 161 mAh g–1 at 0.1 C and 88.3% remains after 200 cycles. The superior cycling stability is comparable to the unused commercial batteries. This innovative approach can be readily extended to recover other types of cathode materials for spent lithium-ion batteries.

A Universal Molten Salt Method for Direct Upcycling of Spent Ni‐rich Cathode Towards Single‐crystalline Li‐rich Cathode

Abstract:With ever-increasing pursuit for high-value output in recycling spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), traditional recycling methods of cathodes tend to be obsolete because of the complicated procedures. Herein, we first upcycle spent polycrystal LiNi0.88Co0.095Al0.025O2 (S-NCA) to high value-added single-crystalline and Li-rich cathode materials through a simple but feasible LiOH-Na2SO4 eutectic molten salt strategy. The in situ X-ray diffraction technique and a series of paratactic experiments record the evolution process of upcycling and prove that excessive Li occupies the transition metal (TM) layers. Beneficial from the single-crystalline and Li-rich nature, the regenerated NCA (R-NCA) exhibits remarkably enhanced electrochemical performances in terms of long-term cyclability, high-rate performance and low polarization. This approach can also be successfully extended to other cathode materials e.g., LiNixCoyMnzO2 (NCM) and mixed spent NCAs with varied degree of Li loss.

Abstract:The consumption of lithium-ion batteries raises raw material demand for and the pressure on ecological sustainability. Metals can be recovered in shorter paths while considerably boosting material use, hence selective recycling of specific elements is becoming a hotspot. This paper proposes a thermally-driven closed-loop recycling process for scrap LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2 cathodes, in which Li is efficiently extracted by water leaching. Then, by combining the leaching residue with Li2CO3, a solid-phase synthesis is carried out, with Li being targeted to heal into Ni-Co-Mn-O to construct the layered structure. The electrochemical performance of the resynthesized cathode material is comparable to that of the commercial LiNi0.5Co0.2Mn0.3O2 (NCM523) material. During the thermal-driven conversion, solid-state processes can be observed. To ensure charge conservation, Li+ in the unstable layered structure is released and mixed with SO42- to produce Li2SO4, and lattice oxygen escapes and transforms with Ni2+ to generate NiO. For the resynthesized process, the spherical shape of Ni-Co-Mn-O is largely retained. Notably, sulfur is remained in the form of SO42- throughout the closed-loop process and is therefore free of contamination. The thermal-driven conversion recycling process revealed in this study will encourage researchers to ensure more efforts in efficient and selective recovery for sustainable energy storage of rechargeable batteries.

Abstract:Li-rich layered oxide Li1.2Co0.13Ni0.13Mn0.54O2 has been successfully re-synthesized using the ascorbic acid leaching solution of spent lithium-ion batteries as the raw materials. A combination of oxalic acid co-precipitation, hydrothermal and calcination processes was applied to synthesize this material. For comparison, a fresh sample with the same composition has been also synthesized from the commercial raw materials using the same method. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Xray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and electrochemical measurements are carried out to characterize these samples. XRD results indicate that both samples have the layered alpha-NaFeO2 structures with a space group of R(3) over bar m. No other crystalline phase was detected by XRD. The electrochemical results show that the re-synthesized and fresh-synthesized sample can deliver discharge capacities as high as 258.8 and 264.2 mAh g(-1) at the first cycle, respectively. After 50 cycles, discharge capacities of 225.1 and 228 mAh g(-1) can be obtained with capacity retention of 87.0 and 86.3%, respectively. This study suggests that the leaching solution from spent lithium ion batteries can be recycled to synthesize Li-rich cathode materials with good electrochemical performance. Synthesis of Ni-Rich Cathode Material from Maleic Acid-Leachate of Spent Lithium-Ion Batteries

Abstract:The recycling and reclamation of spent lithium-ion batteries have attracted more and more attention. In the present study, maleic acid was employed to leach spent LiCoO2 cathode materials. The leachate was then taken to synthesize LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 materials through a coprecipitation and calcination process, where the leachate dosage was controlled at 0%, 20%, 40%, 60%, 80%, and 100%, separately. The results of X-ray diffraction showed that when leachate dosage was lower than 60%, the crystal structure of the materials was normal. However, when the dosage exceeded 80%, the crystal structure was negatively affected, and Li+/Ni2+ mixing was aggravated. The morphology of the materials became irregular when leachate dosages were 80% and 100%. Moreover, the ratio of Ni2+/Ni3+ in the materials increased as the leachate dosage increased. When the leachate dosage was lower than 60%, the electrochemical performance of the materials was reasonable. However, if the dosage exceeded 80%, the discharge specific capacity, cycling stability, and rate stability were significantly decreased, while the irreversibility, polarization, and impedance of the electrodes increased. In conclusion, maleic acid-leachate of spent LiCoO2 materials can be used to synthesize LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 materials, only if the leachate dosage is kept lower than 60%.

Abstract:Preparation of LiCoO2 cathode materials from spent lithium–ion batteries are presented. It started with the reclaim/recycle of metal values from spent lithium–ion batteries, which involves the separation of electrode materials by ultrasonic treatment, acid dissolution, precipitation of cobalt and lithium, followed by the preparation of LiCoO2 cathode materials. Co (99.4%) and Li (94.5%) were recovered from spent lithium–ion batteries. The LiCoO2 cathode materials prepared from the reclaimed cobalt and lithium compounds showed good elecrtochemical performance. The reclaiming of cobalt and lithium has a promising outlook for the recycling of cobalt and lithium from spent Li–ion batteries, thus reducing the cost of Li–ion batteries.
Manganese ion oxidation precipitation method for the recycling and reusing of LiNi0.8Co0.05Mn0.15O2 materials for lithium-ion batteries

Abstract:This paper proposes a scheme of recycling spent batteries, using concentrated hydrochloric acid as leaching agent, NaOH and NH4HCO3 as precipitating agents. The oxidation reaction of Mn2+ under alkaline conditions was included to change the precipitation order of ions, thus recovered ions in steps. The optimal conditions for acid leaching of concentrated hydrochloric acid to treat the ternary cathode material LiNi0.8Co0.05Mn0.15O2 were studied. In the stepwise precipitation process, Mn2+ was oxidized to MnO(OH)(2), which is insoluble in non-reducing acids, and then Mn was recovered under acidic conditions. While Ni and Co were recovered under alkaline conditions by using NaOH. Li was recovered by using NH4HCO3. Using this method, the recovery of Mn reached 85.1% and the product purity reached 98.6%; the recovery of Li reached 95.0% and the product purity reached 99.3%. The pouch cell assembled with the re-synthesized ternary cathode using the recovered material reached a discharge specific capacity of 175 mAh center dot g(-1) in the first cycle. It could stably cycle for 50 cycles with Coulombic efficiency of over 99.5%.

Abstract:The tremendous consumption of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) raises concern about sustainable resources especially for the valuable metals. Recycling valuable metals from spent LIBs is expected to meet the demand growth of LIBs. Herein, a novel approach combined with oxalic acid leaching, calcination relithiation, and annealing is proposed to regenerate spent LiNi0.5Co0.2Mn0.3O2 (NCM523) cathodes. This approach can reduce the recycling cost, accompanied with small energy consumption. Moreover, almost 98% of the valuable metals (Ni, Co, Mn) can be directly regenerated. The regenerated NCM523 cathode exhibits an initial capacity of 146.1 mAh g–1, with ∼85% capacity retention after 100 cycles. This work not only provides an efficient and simple method for recycling spent cathodes but also gives a new perspective of sustainable manufacturing of energy materials.

Abstract:Abstract Adding extra raw materials for direct recycling or upcycling is prospective for battery recycling, but overlooks subtracting specific components beforehand can facilitate the recycling to a self-sufficient mode of sustainable production. Here, a subtractive transformation strategy of degraded LiNi 0.5 Co 0.2 Mn 0.3 O 2 and LiMn 2 O 4 to a 5 V-class disordered spinel LiNi 0.5 Mn 1.5 O 4 -like cathode material is proposed. Equal amounts of Co and Ni from degraded materials are selectively extracted, and the remaining transition metals are directly converted into Ni 0.4 Co 0.1 Mn 1.5 (CO 3 ) 2 precursor for preparing cathode material with in-situ Co doping. The cathode material with improved conductivity and bond strength delivers high-rate (10 C and 20 C) and high-temperature (60 °C) cycling stability. This strategy with no extra precursor input can be generalized to practical degraded black mass and reduces the dependence of current cathode production on rare elements, showing the potential of upcycling from the spent to a next-generation 5 V-class cathode material for the sustainable Li-ion battery industry.

Abstract:In this paper, the recycling of spent LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2 lithium-ion battery cathode materials was achieved successfully combined with the synthesis of NiCo2O4 anode material. Hydrometallurgical technology was adopted in the recycling of spent LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2 lithium-ion battery cathode materials, and sol–gel method was adopted in the synthesis of NiCo2O4 anode material. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) results showed that NiCo2O4 anode material is composed of 22–25-nm nanospheres. In the rate test, NiCo2O4 anode material showed excellent rate performance: the corresponding discharge capacities were stable at 1257, 1160, 1014, 837, and 703 mAh·g−1 when the current density was 100, 200, 300, 400, and 500 mA·g−1, respectively. When the current density returned to 100 mA·g−1, the average capacity could be restored to 1025 mAh·g−1.
A feasible process for recycling valuable metals from LiNi0.5Co0.2Mn0.3O2 cathode materials of spent Li-ion batteries

Abstract:The recycling of cathode materials for spent NCM has always been a major concern for the energy industry. However, among the current processing methods, the general leaching efficiency of Li is between 85% and 93%, with much room for improvement. The recovery of Ni, Co and Mn requires a high cost of secondary purification. In this study, to recycle the NCM cathode material, a route of sulphated reduction roasting – selective Li water leaching – efficiency acid leaching of Ni, Co, Mn – extraction separation – crystallisation was adopted. The results showed that after roasting (a temperature of 800 °C, a reaction time of 90 min, a carbon content of 26%, and a sulphuric acid addition of n H2SO4 :n Li = 0.85), Li water leaching efficiency was 98.6%, followed by acid leaching of Ni, Co and Mn at around 99%. Mn, Co were extracted with Di-(2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid and 2-Ethylhexyl phosphonic acid mono-2-ethylhexyl ester respectively to obtain Ni, Co, Mn solutions, which eventually were crystallized for manganese sulphate, cobalt sulphate, lithium carbonate and nickel sulphate products, with high purity of 99.40%, 98.95%, 99.10%, and 99.95%. The results of this study improved the leaching efficiency of Li and were closely linked to the actual industrial preparation of Ni, Co and Mn sulphates, providing a feasible and promising basis for spent NCM cathode materials industrial recovery. Process for recycling mixed-cathode materials from spent lithium-ion batteries and kinetics of leaching

Abstract:A "grave-to-cradle" process for the recycling of spent mixed-cathode materials (LiCoO2, LiCo1/3Ni1/3Mn1/3O2, and LiMn2O4) has been proposed. The process comprises an acid leaching followed by the resynthesis of a cathode material from the resulting leachate. Spent cathode materials were leached in citric acid (C6H8O7) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). Optimal leaching conditions were obtained at a leaching temperature of 90 °C, a H2O2 concentration of 1.5 vol%, a leaching time of 60 min, a pulp density of 20 g L-1, and a citric acid concentration of 0.5 M. The leaching efficiencies of Li, Co, Ni, and Mn exceeded 95%. The leachate was used to resynthesize new LiCo1/3Ni1/3Mn1/3O2 material by using a sol-gel method. A comparison of the electrochemical properties of the resynthesized material (NCM-spent) with that synthesized directly from original chemicals (NCM-syn) indicated that the initial discharge capacity of NCM-spent at 0.2 C was 152.8 mA h g-1, which was higher than the 149.8 mA h g-1 of NCM-syn. After 160 cycles, the discharge capacities of the NCM-spent and NCM-syn were 140.7 mA h g-1 and 121.2 mA h g-1, respectively. After discharge at 1 C for 300 cycles, the NCM-spent material remained a higher capacity of 113.2 mA h g-1 than the NCM-syn (78.4 mA h g-1). The better performance of the NCM-spent resulted from trace Al doping. A new formulation based on the shrinking-core model was proposed to explain the kinetics of the leaching process. The activation energies of the Li, Co, Ni, and Mn leaching were calculated to be 66.86, 86.57, 49.46, and 45.23 kJ mol-1, respectively, which indicates that the leaching was a chemical reaction-controlled process.

Abstract:With the permeation of LIBs into electric vehicles, the recycling of spent LIBs appears inevitable from the perspective of health, economic, and environmental protection. In this work, a facile process was proposed to realize the recycling and reutilization of valuable metals from spent LIBs. By ammonia leaching, co-precipitation, and solid phase reaction, fresh LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2 cathode material was regenerated. The results revealed that an increase in the concentration of sulfite and ammonia was beneficial to the dissolution of valuable metals except aluminum. And the dissolution of Mn was mainly dominated by pH value and the concentration of sulfite. The initial specific discharge capacity of the regenerated LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2 reaches 178.4 mAh·g−1 at 0.1 C. After 100 cycles, the capacity retains 92.1% at 0.5 C, which shows excellent electrochemical performance. In general, the recycling process may be worth considering for the recycling of spent lithium-ion batteries.
Restoring Surface Defect Crystal of Li-Lacking LiNi 0.6 Co 0.2 Mn 0.2 O 2 Material Particles toward More Efficient Recycling of Lithium-Ion Batteries

Abstract:Lithium-ion batteries are the core components of new energy vehicles. Recycling of spent lithium-ion batteries resources is beneficial for the sustainable development of new energy vehicles. However, the current traditional recycling strategy has the disadvantages of high energy consumption and complex treatment process, which do not meet the requirements of green and energy saving. Here, we report a simpler and greener approach to regenerate spent cathode materials by preoxidation followed by a short annealing approach. The generated cathode material has a good crystal structure and lower Li/Ni mixing. Owing to the stable structure, the generated cathode material exhibits a capacity of 153.82 mA h g–1 at 1C over 2.8–4.3 V with retention reaching 94.74% after 100 cycles. β-NiOOH obtained by preoxidation is beneficial for transformation of the original layered structure in the subsequent short annealing process. The novel approach provides efficient and green ideas for efficient direct regeneration of spent cathode materials.

Abstract:Lithium nickel manganese cobalt oxide in the spent lithium ion batteries (LIBs) contains a lot of lithium, nickel, cobalt and manganese. However, how to effectively recover these valuable metals under the premise of reducing environmental pollution is still a challenge. In this work, a green, efficient, closed-loop direct regeneration technology is proposed to reconstruct LiNi0.5Co0.2Mn0.3O2 (NCM523) cathode materials from spent LIBs. Firstly, the failure mechanism of NCM523 cathode materials in the spent LIBs is analyzed deeply. It is found that the spent NCM523 material has problems such as the dissolution of lithium and transition metals, surface interface failure and structural transformation, resulting in serious deterioration of electrochemical performance. Then NCM523 material was directly regenerated by supplementing metal ions, granulation, ion doping and heat treatment. Meanwhile, PO43- polyanions were doped into the regenerated NCM material in the recovery process, showing excellent electrochemical performance with discharge capacity of 189.8 mAh g-1 at 0.1 C. The recovery process proposed in this study puts forward a new strategy for the recovery various lithium nickel cobalt manganese oxide (e.g., LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2, LiNi0.5Co0.2Mn0.3O2, LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2 and LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2) and accelerates the industrialization of spent lithium ion battery recycling.

Abstract:Pollution from spent batteries is causing an environmental crisis, driving the development of innovative recycling and upcycling methods. Conventional recycling technologies are plagued by the technical barriers of high pollution, low efficiency, and poor product utilization. Herein, an innovative and sustainable method is reported of in situ selective and precise recycling of cathode scrap into high value‐added transition metal oxides, as well as in‐depth verification of their suitability as lithium‐ion batteries (LIBs) anodes. The recycled ZnMn2O4 material exhibits extremely high discharge specific capacity and performs well at high rates. This unique selective conversion technology, attributed to the co‐octahedral retention conversion, can be applied to obtain a variety of anode materials from aged cells. A successful demonstration of the reconversion of waste LiMn2O4 and LiCoO2 to obtain transition metal oxide materials provides the possibility of further efficient green recycling approaches for large‐scale applications. A sustainable method of in situ selective and precise recycling of cathode scrap into high value‐added transition metal oxides is reported. This unique selective conversion technology is attributed to the co‐octahedral retention conversion. Economic and environmental assessments find this recovery process to be highly economically and environmentally beneficial.

Abstract:The recycling and reuse of Ni, Co, and other rare metals from aged lithium-ion batteries have drawn much attention to the researchers, which can reduce the negative effect on the environment. In this work, a novel and facile regeneration method is proposed to obtain valuable metals Ni, Co, and Mn. The fresh LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2 cathode materials are regenerated via employing mixed acid leaching, oxalate co-precipitation, and solid-phase reaction. The regenerated LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2 cathode materials display an initial specific discharge capacity of 180.6 mAh g−1 at 0.1 C. The capacity retention is 86% after 100 cycles at the current density of 1 C. The recycling process in our work does not need complicated metal separation and has low processing costs. Moreover, the regenerated cathode materials can be reused in next-generation LIBs.

Abstract:The increase in the use of lithium-ion batteries has led to a rapid increase in the number of used Li-ion batteries. If these used lithium-ion batteries are not handled properly, they will result in environmental pollution and waste of valuable metal resources. In this study, spent lithium cobalt oxide electrode sheets were directly leached using d, l-malic acid and H2O2, and LiNi1/3-xCo1/3Mn1/ 3AlxO2 (x = 0.02, 0.04) was resynthesized by sol-gel method. Results show that the prepared materials exhibit typical layered structure, and the doping of Al3+ has a certain effect on inhibiting the mixing of cations. The synthesized LiNi1/3-0.04Co1/3Mn1/3Al0.04O2 maintains an excellent reversible discharge capacity of 148.1 mAhg−1 at a current density of 0.2 C after 100 cycles, which is higher than that of LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2. The good performance of the regenerated positive electrode material indicates that the simple recovery and recycling process is feasible.

Abstract:Recycling spent lithium-ion batteries plays a significant role in alleviating the shortage of raw materials and environmental problems. However, recycled materials are deemed inferior to commercial materials, preventing the industry from adopting recycled materials in new batteries. Here, we demonstrate that the recycled LiNi1/3Mn1/3Co1/3O2 has a superior rate and cycle performance, verified by various industry-level tests. Specifically, 1 Ah cells with the recycled LiNi1/3Mn1/3Co1/3O2 have the best cycle life result reported for recycled materials and enable 4,200 cycles and 11,600 cycles at 80% and 70% capacity retention, which is 33% and 53% better than the state-of-the-art, commercial LiNi1/3Mn1/3Co1/3O2. Meanwhile, its rate performance is 88.6% better than commercial powders at 5C. From experimental and modeling results, the unique microstructure of recycled materials enables superior electrochemical performance. The recycled material outperforms commercially available equivalent, providing a green and sustainable solution for spent lithium-ion batteries.
