Abstract:We report on the first-principles study of the phase transition and thermodynamic properties of the thorium metal (Th) within the framework of quasiharmonic approximation. The structural properties of Th under pressure are well reproduced. It is found that the fcc–bct phase transition occurs at 70 GPa. Based on our calculated phonon dispersion curve that is in good agreement with experiment, the thermal equation of state and thermodynamic properties, such as thermal pressure, heat capacity and entropy are obtained. All the properties of Th under high pressure and high temperature are predicted successfully.

Abstract:We investigate the electronic structure, mechanical properties and thermal transport properties of ThC based on density functional theory. We find that thorium monocarbide shows metallic and mechanically stable at ground state, and the 5f-orbital and 6d-orbital electrons of Th atoms do not exhibit strong correlation properties. The Debye temperature obtained from the elastic constant is also in good agreement with the results of others. The thermal transport properties of ThC were discussed with the Boltzmann transport equation. It is found that the thermal conductivity of the lattice comes from the contribution of the acoustic support, and the optical branch has a lower thermal conductivity because of the suppression of the anharmonicity. The Seebeck coefficient and the power factor of ThC have a maximum at the valence band and increase with the increasing temperature, while the conductivity is less affected by the temperature. The electronic thermal conductivity increases with the increasing temperature, and at high temperatures, Widman-Franz law is ineffective. At low temperatures, the total thermal conductivity mainly comes from the lattice thermal conductivity; electrons occupy a major role at high temperatures. The thermoelectric figure of ThC is close to 0 at room temperature and cannot be used as a good thermoelectric material. (C) 2019 Published by Elsevier B.V.

Abstract:Researching on the CANDU lattice physics,average power of the core is carried out.Though the value of power may have effect on the nuclear reaction in the TACR core that used thorium fuel,the lattice cross sections are also different in various power conditions.This paper has studied the evolution of the lattice cross section data of the all uranium fuel lattice and the Th-U lattice with the radiation value.The233Pa and 233U weight content in the thorium fuel in different power conditions is also examined.The results show that the power has effect on the macro section of the thorium fuel.When doing the core calculation with thorium fuel,the history-based local-parameters methodology is adopted.

Abstract:It’s very important to estimate the mass and radiotoxicity of isotopes in spent fuel of thorium fuel cycle, which will benefit the application of the thorium fuel. Much research work has been done on the spent fuel and radioactivity of thorium-based fuel before, yet the difference in usage is always ignored. This paper studies the raise of isotopes in spent fuel of thorium-based fuel cycle in pressurized water reactors and fast neutron reactors, focus on the radioactivity level of actinides and fission products, the important nuclides which have long term radiological impact or give the highest contribution to the total dose on short term after different decay periods. The paper discuss the important nuclides in the measurement of thorium fuel burnup, the conclusion will benefit the actual application of thorium fuel.

Abstract:232Th/233U fuel cycle is an alternate candidate for future nuclear energy. Neutron-induced fission cross section of 232Th is one of the important nuclear data if using thorium as the fuel in the future. 232Th(n, f) cross sections from 1 to 300 MeV were measured at China Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS) Back-streaming neutron facility (Back-n) relative to 235U(n, f) and n-p scattering. A fast ionization chamber for fission cross section measurement (FIXM) and a proton recoil telescope (PRT) were used to perform the measurement. The neutron energy in this measurement reaches up to 300 MeV which is supposed to be the highest among the current Experimental Nuclear Reaction Data (EXFOR) library. It stands as the only experimental data in the region of 200-300 MeV in EXFOR as well. The experimental and evaluated data of 232Th(n, f) cross section above 60 MeV are scarce, the measurement data of this work will be valuable references for future evaluation in high energy. For the data below 60 MeV, most of our data are more consistent with ENDF/B-VIII.0, excepting in the region of 1-2 MeV where our data are more in favor of CENDL-3.2.

Abstract:Thorium is a fertile element that can be applied in the conceptual blanket design of a fusion-fission hybrid reactor. It is essential to validate Th-232 nuclear data and obtain the breeding properties of macroscopic thorium assemblies by conducting integral neutronics benchmark experiments. The thorium assemblies with a D-T fusion neutron source consist of a polyethylene shell, depleted uranium shell, and thorium oxide powder cylinder. The Th-232 (n, gamma), Th-232 (n, f), and Th-232 (n, 2n) reaction rates in the assemblies are measured by ThO2 foil activation technique. The experimental uncertainties are about 3.1% for Th-232 capture rates, 5.3-5.5% for Th-232 fission rates, and 6.8-7.0% for Th-232 (n, 2n) reaction rates. From Th-232 reaction rates, the fuel and neutron breeding properties of thorium under different neutron spectra are obtained and compared. The experiments are simulated by using the MC code with different evaluated data. The ratios of calculation to experimental values for the reaction rates are analyzed.

Abstract:The purpose of this study was to systematically analyze the leaching process of radionuclides from a decommissioned uranium tailings. About 40% of all forms of uranium are harmful to the environment. The particle size of soil are the main factors affecting the leaching amount. Uranium and thorium have migrated again under the influence of rainfall. The migration mechanism of uranium is mainly controlled by the internal diffusion of soil. The key to the treatment of tailings pollution is to increase the pH of the tailings and control the tailings discharge.

Abstract:Thorium (Th) is a naturally occurring radioactive element found in the environment, and recent advancements have been made in identifying and characterizing Th-bearing nanoparticles (NPs). However, the main focus is still on synthesized Th-bearing NPs and knowledge about natural Th-bearing NPs remains limited. Here, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) observations of thorite from the Huayangchuan uranium ore deposit in Shaanxi Province, Central China, have revealed the nanoscale mineral characteristics of thorite. In this study, thorite NPs ranging from 5-10 nm in size were identified within the uranium ore. A combination of transmission electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectroscopy (TEM-EDS) elemental mapping and corresponding HRTEM images alongside Selected Area Electron Diffraction (SAED) and Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) patterns revealed a complex nanoscale structure in the thorite NPs, consisting of both amorphous and crystalline nanodomains with abundant defects. These nanostructures are associated with a metamictization mechanism in micrometer-sized thorite. Our findings indicate that the metamictization process can generate numerous thorite nanoparticles. Given the high penetrability and mobility of these NPs, the metamictization of thorite poses new challenges for the long-term stability of radioactive substances and the storage containers for radioactive waste. Furthermore, considering the likelihood of environmental release and the chemical toxicity, radioactivity, and nanotoxicity of natural Th-bearing NPs, increased attention should be given to the presence of natural thorite NPs in the ore deposit.

Abstract:Nuclear graphite (NG) is widely applied in nuclear facilities, and its strong interaction with tritium is an essential factor for tritium transport behavior in various reactors and the treatment of radioactive NG waste. Given that NG is a polycrystalline and porous material, interactions between tritium and NG exist in various microstructures, including graphite edges, graphene basal planes, and amorphous structures. In this study, density functional theory which is integrated in Vienna ab initio simulation package (VASP) was combined with thermal desorption theory to elucidate the underlying mechanism of hydrogen isotope storage corresponding to the experimentally observed desorption peaks in NG. The four desorption temperature peaks, ranging from low to high, were mainly attributed to hydrogen isotope desorption from the graphite basal plane surface, amorphous carbon surface, unsaturated armchair and zigzag edges, respectively. The interaction between hydrogen isotopes and carbon nanostructures provides deeper insights into the understanding of tritium enrichment on the NG surface, which is primarily attributed to the adsorption of tritium on graphite basal plane-like surfaces at relatively low temperatures. This study provides a practical method to bridge the gap between the atomic binding structure and desorption temperature peaks from a kinetic perspective, providing insights into temperature-dependent hydrogen desorption in typical carbon structures and deepening our understanding of tritium transport behaviors in advanced nuclear energy systems.
A Comprehensive Study of the 14C Source Term in the 10 MW High-Temperature Gas-Cooled Reactor

Abstract:ABSTRACTWhile assessing the environmental impact of nuclear power plants, researchers have focused their attention on radiocarbon (14C) owing to its high mobility in the environment and important radiological impact on human beings. The 10 MW high-temperature gas-cooled reactor (HTR-10) is the first pebble-bed gas-cooled test reactor in China that adopted helium as primary coolant and graphite spheres containing tristructural-isotropic (TRISO) coated particles as fuel elements. A series of experiments on the 14C source terms in HTR-10 was conducted: (1) measurement of the specific activity and distribution of typical nuclides in the irradiated graphite spheres from the core, (2) measurement of the activity concentration of 14C in the primary coolant, and (3) measurement of the amount of 14C discharged in the effluent from the stack. All experimental data on 14C available for HTR-10 were summarized and analyzed using theoretical calculations. A sensitivity study on the total porosity, open porosity, and percentage of closed pores that became open after irradiating the matrix graphite was performed to illustrate their effects on the activity concentration of 14C in the primary coolant and activity amount of 14C in various deduction routes.
Possibility assessment for production of non-traditional nuclear fuel in thorium blanket of hybrid thermonuclear reactor

Abstract:Abstract The paper aims at studying specific peculiarities in isotope composition of thorium blanket under irradiation by fusion neutron source (FNS) in hybrid thermonuclear reactor (HTR). High-energy (14 MeV) component of neutron spectrum in thorium HTR blanket results in production of non-traditional fissile mixture including not only 233 U, but also 231 Pa 232 U and 234 U. Extraction of such non-traditional fuel from spent Th-blanket and its utilization in traditional nuclear power reactors could increase fuel burn-up and strengthen regime of nuclear non-proliferation. The detailed investigations of these positive effects require high-precision neutron-physical analyses of thorium HTR blanket. The results obtained in these investigations are presented in the paper. The following results were obtained: the chosen model of HTR allowed us to form high-energy neutron spectrum in Th-blanket with significant fraction of 14 MeV neutrons; it was evaluated that threshold (n,2n) and (n,3n)-reactions are able to produce significant amounts of non-traditional target isotopes 231 Pa and 232 U; it was shown that accumulation of non-traditional target isotopes weakened substantially in depth of Th-blanket. So, it seems reasonable to seek for optimal thickness of Th-blanket and, thus, to find optimal loading of natural thorium.

Abstract:Worldwide R&D efforts in establishing the reactor technology with the Thorium-Uranium (Th-U) fuel cycle have significantly grown in the recent past. The study of fission product yields has a major impact on the understanding of the fissioning process and plays a vital role in the development, design and safety analysis of advanced nuclear energy systems. A new evaluation of fission product yields based on a new database of measurements up to 2013 will allow more reliable and accurate model calculations of the Th-U fuel cycle. This work is undertaken to study the mass and charge distributions of fission products for the fuel nuclei U-233 and Th-232 induced by thermal, fast, and about 14 MeV neutrons. First, the available experimental data is analyzed systematically and evaluated. Second, it is necessary to predict the unmeasured fission yields and their errors by the systematics, due to the lack of experimental data. The mass distributions are well described by a superposition of 5 Gaussian functions, which is called the Multi-Gaussian model. The charge distributions are calculated on the basis of Z(p) model. Their parameters are derived based on evaluated data. Finally, the fission product yield library related with the Th-U fuel cycle is well established. The evaluated data is improved compared to the major international evaluated libraries, including ENDF/B-VII.1, JENDL-4.0 and JEFF-3.2. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:This study investigates the behavior of thorium-containing mixed oxide (TOX) fuels with different uranium ( 235 U) enrichment levels in Pressurized Water Reactors (PWRs). Using SERPENT V2.2.0 and OpenMC Monte Carlo codes, analyses were performed on 232 Th consumption, fission products, neutronic behaviors and effective multiplication factor (k eff ) at different 235 U enrichment levels. The results highlight the subtle relationship between uranium enrichment, fuel composition and neutron flux, shedding light on depletion rates and fission product production. In particular, while higher 235 U content enhances fission reactions, it also affects the presence of specific fission products such as 137 Cs and 131 I and influences nuclear absorption reactions leading to the production of isotopes such as 135 Xe, 241 Am, 237 Np, 243 Cm and 90 Sr. These findings underline the complex interplay between fuel composition, neutron flux and nuclear properties and provide important insights for reactor optimization and fuel cycle management in PWRs.

Abstract:Thorium can supplement the current limited reserves of uranium. In current study, analyses are performed for thorium based fuels in thermal neutron spectrum Super Critical Water Reactor (SCWR). Thorium based fuels are studied in two roles. First role being replacement of conventional uranium dioxide fuel while the other being burner of Reactor Grade Plutonium (RG-Pu) in thermal neutron spectrum SCWR. Coupled neutron physics/thermal hydraulics analyses are performed due to large density variation of coolant over the active fuel length. Analyses reveal that thorium-uranium MOX fuels lead to smaller burnup values as compared to equivalent enriched uranium dioxide but possess the advantage of smaller excess reactivity at Beginning of Life (BOL). This can lead to savings in the form of Burnable Poisons (BP). Smaller fuel average temperature values are obtained for thorium-uranium MOX fuels as compared to uranium dioxide fuel option. Coated fuel option utilizing mixed thorium-uranium mono nitride fuel can help further decrease fuel average temperature values for thorium based fuels. U-233, produced in thorium uranium fuels, contribution towards fission energy produced is smaller as compared to plutonium produced in conventional uranium dioxide fuel. In terms of proliferation resistance, approximately 40% less quantity of plutonium is produced for thorium-uranium MOX fuels (for studied compositions) as compared to equivalent enriched uranium dioxide fuel. But, there is not much difference between the discharged plutonium vector compositions. Thorium–Plutonium based fuels lead to significantly harder spectrum which results in larger spread in radial power density and eventually causes larger values for thermal hydraulic parameters like fuel and clad temperature. Due to almost no production of plutonium, thorium based fuels can be a very good option to burn RG-Pu in thermal spectrum SCWR. Thorium based fuels destroyed almost 74% initially loaded RG-Pu as compared to 60% for uranium based MOX. HEU based thorium fuels can be a very good option for replacing conventional uranium dioxide fuels as very small quantities of plutonium is produced. This option, although, has regulatory issues due to use of HEU material.
First-Principle Studies on Local Lattice Distortions and Thermodynamic Properties in Non-Stoichiometric Thorium Monocarbide

Abstract:Thorium monocarbide (ThC) is interesting as an alternative fertile material to be used in nuclear breeder systems and thorium molten salt reactors because of its high thermal conductivity, good irradiation performance, and wide homogeneous composition range. Here, the influence of carbon vacancy site and concentration on lattice distortions in non-stoichiometric ThC1-x (x = 0, 0.03125, 0.0625, 0.125, 0.1875, 0.25, or 0.3125) is systematically investigated using first-principle calculations by the projector augmented wave (PAW) method. The energy, mechanical parameters, and thermodynamic properties of the ThC1-x system are calculated. The results show that vacancy disordering has little influence on the total energy of the system at a constant carbon vacancy concentration using the random substitution method. As the concentration of carbon vacancies increases, significant lattice distortion occurs, leading to poor structural stability in ThC1-x systems. The changes in lattice constant and volume indicate that ThC0.75 and ThC0.96875 represent the boundaries between two-phase and single-phase regions, which is consistent with our experiments. Furthermore, the structural phase of ThC1-x (x = 0.25-0.3125) transforms from a cubic to a tetragonal structure due to its 'over-deficient' composition. In addition, the elastic moduli, Poisson's ratio, Zener anisotropic factor, and Debye temperature of ThC1-x approximately exhibit a linear downward trend as x increases. The thermal expansion coefficient of ThC1-x (x = 0-0.3125) exhibits an obvious 'size effect' and follows the same trend at high temperatures, except for x = 0.03125. Heat capacity and Helmholtz free energy were also calculated using the Debye model; the results showed the C vacancy defect has the greatest influence on non-stoichiometric ThC1-x. Our results can serve as a theoretical basis for studying the radiation damage behavior of ThC and other thorium-based nuclear fuels in reactors.
Processing and preliminary testing on multi-group data file of pivotal nuclides in thorium-uranium cycle

Abstract:The development of advanced thorium-based nuclear system raises new requirements on nuclear data.The multi-group data file of critical nuclides in the thorium-uranium recycle is the foundation of physical design,analysis and calculation of the reactor core.Based on authoritative nuclear data processing code NJOY,this paper obtains a WIMS format multi-group cross section data files through processing the ENDF/B-VII.1 evaluation nuclear data file,uses the specific update maintenance proce-dure WILLIE to get a WIMS format data file,and conducts a series of critical benchmarks on the data file using the multi-group reactor core calculation code WIMSD5B.The results show that the computed results of the WIMS file based on the processing of ENDF/B-VII.1 are basically the same as those of the latest WIMS-D file published on the websites of the “WIMS-D”library up-dating project (WLUP)with higher accuracy and reliability than those of the shipped WIMS-D file of the WIMSD5B code.Fur-thermore,the average deviation of the new WIMS file performing in the validation of 1 6 thorium-uranium cycle benchmarks is 0.225 3% smaller than that of the old WIMS file.

Abstract:ABSTRACTIn order to provide reference for the evaluation of thorium parameters for the conceptual design of fusion–fission hybrid energy reactor, a dedicated integral experiment was carried out in a thorium powder cylinder bombarded with D-T neutrons. Thorium capture and fission rates in the 0° direction to the incident D+ beam were obtained using the activation method followed by the off-line gamma-ray technique, experimental uncertainties were ∼3.1% for thorium capture rate, and were 5.5%, 8.1%, and 6.3% for thorium fission rates based on fission products 85mKr, 143Ce, and 87Kr, respectively. Abstract:Knowledge of the local Th structure is a prerequisite for a better understanding of the physicochemical properties of the thorium-based mixed oxides (Th-MOX) involved in the Th-based nuclear fuel cycle. The crystalline electric field (CEF) splitting of the 6d shell in Th1- xU xO2 ( x = 0.25, 0.5, 0.75) solid solution was probed by the Th L3 edge high-energy-resolution fluorescence-detected (HERFD) X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy (XANES) collected at the Lβ5 emission line, which cannot be obtained by conventional X-ray absorption methods. The detected CEF split between the 6d eg and t2g orbitals in ThO2 consisting of ordered Th-O8 cubes with cubic symmetry is ∼3.5 eV for the Th4+ ion. Because the split peaks of the white line corresponding to the crystal-field splitting of the unoccupied 6d states were resolved in the HERFD-XANES spectra, the analysis of these split peaks combined with first-principles calculations revealed that an increase of the U content involves the distortion of the Th-O8 cubes in the Th1- xU xO2 mixed oxides. The lower symmetry of the Th-O8 cube induced by the incorporated U tends to reduce the local crystal-field around Th4+ as well as the hybridization of Th 6t2g-O 2p which is mainly responsible for the covalent property of the Th-O bond. The phenomenon is noticeable in Th0.25U0.75O2, whose CEF splitting is decreased by approximately 10%, and covalent mixing between Th 6d t2g and O 2p orbitals is substantially reduced compared to that of pure ThO2.
