Abstract:Based on the investigation of recent development of the long-life small nuclear power systems in the world, this paper puts forward a new concept of building a long-life reactor core with Thorium-Uranium fuel and Lead-Bismuth coolant and conducts a series of research on the characteristics of the Th-U fuel. In the physics design of a long-life reactor, it is important to keep a small reactivity swing with burnup and a deep burnup core, as well as negative temperature and void reactivity coefficient. The program MCBurn are used in the calculation of a pin cell model with different initial driver fuel, p/d ratio, enrichment and fuel type to obtain some physical results such as neutron spectrum, the reactivity swing with burnup and initial conversion ratio, etc. Based on the analysis of these results, this paper concludes some physical requirements of a long-life reactor core and constructs a preliminary core design with some safety parameters such as void reactivity coefficient and other results.

Abstract:This paper introduce the thorium fuel based long-life reactor concept and its preliminary design. The Lead-Bismuth has been chosen as the coolant of the long-life reactor. Compare with the traditional heavy metal coolant such as Lead or Lead-Bismuth, the enriched Pb208 has some advantage in reactor physics and which will benefit the long-life core design. The research work on the pure Pb208 coolant and thorium fuel in fast spectrum has been done to verify the physical characteristic of Pb208 based on one fast reactor pin cell. The results show the application of Pb208 coolant will increase the system criticality and decrease the positive void reactivity coefficient in fast reactor design. We used the MCB and ORIGEN codes to perform calculation on the thorium-based long-life core model with Pb208 coolant, focus on the void coefficient in the center of the fast reactor. It can be concluded that the Pb208 will greatly improve the characteristics of the long-life core.

Abstract:In the thorium-based long-life reactor, the thorium-spent fuel plutonium mixed fuel and lead-bismuth coolant are used to design a fast neutron spectrum core. This paper studies the control system in the long-life core and gets some useful conclusion. The control system includes two parts: the central control rod and a peripheral control unit that surrounds the core. The paper studies the thickness of the absorber, which influences the neutron absorb capability and economy, and gives the relation between the thickness and the reactivity. A peripheral reflector is used in most small fast neutron spectrum critical equipment to control the reactivity. The paper discusses the absorber mode and the reflector mode in peripheral control unit design. The paper gives the final design details of the control system in the thorium-based long-life core reactor. The control system has high control efficiency and achieves the requirement of the long-life core.

Abstract:It’s very important to estimate the mass and radiotoxicity of isotopes in spent fuel of thorium fuel cycle, which will benefit the application of the thorium fuel. Much research work has been done on the spent fuel and radioactivity of thorium-based fuel before, yet the difference in usage is always ignored. This paper studies the raise of isotopes in spent fuel of thorium-based fuel cycle in pressurized water reactors and fast neutron reactors, focus on the radioactivity level of actinides and fission products, the important nuclides which have long term radiological impact or give the highest contribution to the total dose on short term after different decay periods. The paper discuss the important nuclides in the measurement of thorium fuel burnup, the conclusion will benefit the actual application of thorium fuel.

Abstract:Researching on the CANDU lattice physics,average power of the core is carried out.Though the value of power may have effect on the nuclear reaction in the TACR core that used thorium fuel,the lattice cross sections are also different in various power conditions.This paper has studied the evolution of the lattice cross section data of the all uranium fuel lattice and the Th-U lattice with the radiation value.The233Pa and 233U weight content in the thorium fuel in different power conditions is also examined.The results show that the power has effect on the macro section of the thorium fuel.When doing the core calculation with thorium fuel,the history-based local-parameters methodology is adopted.

Abstract:Exploitation of nuclear power plants as well as construction of new generation reactors lead to great accumulation of spent fuel in interim storage facilities at nuclear power plants, and in spent fuel «wet» and «dry» long-term storages. Consequently, handling the fuel needs more attention. The paper is focused on the creation of an efficient computational model used for developing the procedures and regulations of spent nuclear fuel handling in nuclear fuel cycle of the new generation reactor. A Thorium High-temperature Gas-Cooled Reactor Unit (HGTRU, Russia) was used as an object for numerical research. Fuel isotopic composition of HGTRU was calculated using the verified code of the MCU-5 program. The analysis of alpha emitters and neutron radiation sources was made. The neutron yield resulting from (α,n)-reactions and at spontaneous fission was calculated. In this work it has been shown that contribution of (α,n)-neutrons is insignificant in case of such (Th,Pu)-fuel composition and HGTRU operation mode, and integral neutron yield can be approximated by the Watt spectral function. Spectral and standardized neutron distributions were achieved by approximation of the list of high-precision nuclear data. The distribution functions were prepared in group and continuous form for further use in calculations according to MNCP, MCU, and SCALE.

Abstract:Physical analysis program, WIMSD5- SN2- CYCLE3D and CASMO3-CYCLE, are established for study on thorium-uranium fuel cycle. Unit one of Daya Bay PWR is used as referenced reactor model. New assembly including 4.2% enrichment U-235 elements and 36 thorium dioxide elements is designed without change of physical dimension and structural materials of assembly and core. Neutronic calculation is done on thorium-based assembly and uranium-based assembly with 3.2% U-235 enrichments. The process of initial fuel cycle to the equilibrium uranium-plutonium fuel cycle on Daya Bay PWR core with 12 months refueling period is simulated. Then with initial condition of equilibrium uranium-plutonium fuel cycle, thorium-based assemblies are placed in the core to replace uranium-based assemblies in batches, and the refueling process from the equilibrium uranium-plutonium fuel cycle to the equilibrium thorium-uranium fuel cycle is simulated and analyzed. The calculation results show that total fissile nuclides' consumption every day of the equilibrium thorium-uranium cycle is decreased by 18.4% than that of the equilibrium uranium-plutonium cycle, and long-life radioactive nuclear waste is reduced. Meanwhile, the cycle length of the equilibrium thorium-uranium cycle is reduced by about 90 EFPD than that of the equilibrium uranium-plutonium cycle, which will shorten the refueling period and increase operating cost. Moreover, it will bring great difficulty of fuel management, safety control and disposal of spent fuel. U235 enrichment is proposed to improve for utilization of thorium in PWR.

Abstract:Thorium can supplement the current limited reserves of uranium. In current study, analyses are performed for thorium based fuels in thermal neutron spectrum Super Critical Water Reactor (SCWR). Thorium based fuels are studied in two roles. First role being replacement of conventional uranium dioxide fuel while the other being burner of Reactor Grade Plutonium (RG-Pu) in thermal neutron spectrum SCWR. Coupled neutron physics/thermal hydraulics analyses are performed due to large density variation of coolant over the active fuel length. Analyses reveal that thorium-uranium MOX fuels lead to smaller burnup values as compared to equivalent enriched uranium dioxide but possess the advantage of smaller excess reactivity at Beginning of Life (BOL). This can lead to savings in the form of Burnable Poisons (BP). Smaller fuel average temperature values are obtained for thorium-uranium MOX fuels as compared to uranium dioxide fuel option. Coated fuel option utilizing mixed thorium-uranium mono nitride fuel can help further decrease fuel average temperature values for thorium based fuels. U-233, produced in thorium uranium fuels, contribution towards fission energy produced is smaller as compared to plutonium produced in conventional uranium dioxide fuel. In terms of proliferation resistance, approximately 40% less quantity of plutonium is produced for thorium-uranium MOX fuels (for studied compositions) as compared to equivalent enriched uranium dioxide fuel. But, there is not much difference between the discharged plutonium vector compositions. Thorium–Plutonium based fuels lead to significantly harder spectrum which results in larger spread in radial power density and eventually causes larger values for thermal hydraulic parameters like fuel and clad temperature. Due to almost no production of plutonium, thorium based fuels can be a very good option to burn RG-Pu in thermal spectrum SCWR. Thorium based fuels destroyed almost 74% initially loaded RG-Pu as compared to 60% for uranium based MOX. HEU based thorium fuels can be a very good option for replacing conventional uranium dioxide fuels as very small quantities of plutonium is produced. This option, although, has regulatory issues due to use of HEU material.

Abstract:The very-high-temperature reactor (VHTR) has been included in the conception of the Generation IV nuclear energy system proposed by the United States Department of Energy Nuclear Energy Research Advisory Committee and the Generation IV International Forum. After the Fukushima accident, concern has grown regarding the safety of nuclear power plants. For its inherent safety, superior proliferation resistance, and high thermal efficiency, the VHTR and its prototype, the high-temperature gas-cooled reactor (HTGR), attracted worldwide interest. Tritium exists in the fuel element and graphite reflectors in the core, primary coolant, some liquid and solid wastes, and gaseous effluent of HTGRs. Due to its permeation behavior at high temperatures, tritium is the most important nuclide in the secondary loop of HTGRs. Considering the future application of HTGRs in hydrogen production, tritium will be non-negligible and could be difficult to separate from hydrogen. In addition, the interaction between tritium and graphite is expected to be very strong. The absorption, desorption, and diffusion of tritium at the interface between the primary coolant and graphite are of great interest. Experimental measurements of the diffusion coefficients of tritium and its isotopes do not agree well with theoretical predictions based on the consideration of isotope effects. In this paper, research progress on the permeation, absorption, desorption, and diffusion behaviors of tritium in HTGRs is summarized and discussed. The chemical form of tritium in the primary coolant, and its spectroscopic characteristics, internal structures, and transport behaviors are organized and analyzed. Basic properties related to tritium, such as isotope effect, nuclear spin, radioactivity, etc. are also discussed.

Abstract:Stemming from a renewed interest in the suitability of thorium as fertile isotope, this study presents an extensive survey of some of the recent advances on the use of thorium in light water reactors, with the view of informing researchers and policy makers. The isotopic properties of fertile and fissile material are discussed, with an emphasis on the suitability and unique characteristics of thorium. The overview is categorized in terms of fuel design, moderation, neutronic behaviour, thermal-hydraulics, fuel performance, radiotoxicity and proliferation. A brief scoping of varying perspectives on the economics of thorium in various fuel designs and applications in open and closed cycles, long residence fuel and fleet applications is presented. In conclusion, a high-level explanation of dominating factors, rendering various (often divergent) outcomes, is attempted, based on first principles.

Preliminary Investigation of THFR Passive Residual Heat Removal System

Abstract:Abstract The RELAP5 code was employed to study the natural circulation characteristics and core thermal-hydraulic parameters of THFR (Tsinghua High Flux Reactor) under the condition that only the passive residual heat removal system was used when the emergency cooling pump powered by the battery bank shut down due to power exhaustion. To achieve a higher neutron flux, high flux reactor possesses several distinctive properties, including high power density, narrow coolant channels, and low coolant pressure., so the loss of heat sinks under accident conditions can be catastrophic, Therefore, it is necessary to establish a passive residual heat removal system. This study compared the two-loop and three-loop schemes, The results showed that both schemes can reliably establish natural circulation and efficiently remove core residual heat. Throughout the process, the maximum temperatures of the coolant, cladding surface, and fuel meat were below the design limits. Because the maximum temperature of the cladding surface was lower than the saturation temperature, the DNB phenomenon did not appear in the core. The three-loop scheme, with lower total resistance and higher coolant flow rate, is more favorable for improving the thermal safety of the reactor. It also has a lower overall heat transfer area, which helps reduce the cost of heat exchangers.

Abstract:This paper presents a design study of power shape flattening for an optimized ultra-long cycle fast reactor with a power rate of 1000 MWe in order to mitigate the power peaking issue and improve the safety with a lower maximum neutron flux and reactivity swing. There are variations in the core designs by loading thorium fuel or zoning fuels in the blanket region and the bottom driver region of ultra-long cycle fast reactor with a power rate of 1000 MWe. While it has lower breeding performance in a fast breeder reactor, thorium fuel is one of the promising fuel options for future reactors because of its abundance and its safety characteristics. It has been confirmed that the thorium fuels, when loaded into the center region of a reactor core, lower the power peaking factor from 1.64 to 1.25 after 20 years and achieves a more flattened radial power distribution. This consequently reduces the maximum neutron flux and the speed of the active core moving from 3.0 cm/year to 2.5 cm/year on the average over the 60-year reactor operation. It has been successfully demonstrated that the three-zone core is the most optimized core, has the most flattened radial power shape, and is without any compromise in the nature of long cycle core, from the neutronics point of view, in terms of average discharge burnup and breeding ratio. Abstract:Super-Critical water-cooled Fast Reactor (SCFR) is a feasible option for the Gen-IV SCWR designs, in which much less moderator and thus coolant are needed for transferring the fission heat from the core compared with the traditional LWRs. The fast spectrum of SCFR is useful for fuel breeding and thorium utilization, which is then beneficial for enhancing the sustainability of the nuclear fuel cycle. A SCFR core is constructed in this work, with the aim of simplifying the mechanical structure and keeping negative coolant void reactivity during the whole core life. A core burnup simulation scheme based on Monte Carlo lattice homogenization is adopted in this study, and the reactor physics analysis has been performed with DU-MOX and Th-MOX fuel. The main issues discussed include the fuel conversion ratio and the coolant void reactivity. The analysis shows that thorium-based fuel can provide inherent safety for SCFR without use of blanket, which is favorable for the mechanical design of SCFR.

Abstract:Abstract: The Jordan Research and Training Reactor (JRTR) is a 5-MWth, open-pool type, light-water moderated and cooled reactor with a heavy-water reflector system. The core consists of standard Material Testing Reactor (MTR), the plate type of fuel assemblies with low enriched fuel of 19.75% U-235 enrichment. One of the most important purposes of JRTR is producing several radioisotopes e.g. (99Mo/99mTc, 131I and 192Ir isotopes) by using the neutron activation technology. A new computational model has been developed for different low enrichment fuels (Thorium and Uranium) in the JRTR by using the Serpent Monte Carlo code. The purpose of this paper is to validate Th-U233 fuel by comparison of the calculation results of important neutronics parameters, like keff, flux distribution, kinetics parameters, power peaking factors, heat decay and activity of spent fuel.
