Abstract:We present all-optical wavelength conversion that can be used in the all-optical wavelength routing system. The wavelength conversion is capable of converting the same wavelength using a single semiconductor optical amplifier. Experimental proofs are presented.

Abstract:All-optical wavelength conversion is experimentally demonstrated for 40 Gb/s Pol-MUX QPSK signal using four-wave mixing in a single silicon waveguide. The power penalties of dual polarizations are both <1.5 dB at the BER of 3x10(-3).

Abstract:Wavelength conversion and five-channel multicasting for 20 Gbit/s quadrature phase-shift keying signals have been experimentally demonstrated based on four-wave mixing in a silicon waveguide with digital coherent detection. The eye diagrams and constellation diagrams of the converted and multicasting idlers are successfully observed. Moreover, the bit-error rates (BERs) of the generated idlers are measured and the power penalties are all less than 0.7 dB at a BER of 3×10(-3).

Abstract:In this paper, several applications in all-optical signal processing based on a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) and variable delayed interferometers (DIs) have been experimentally demonstrated. Wavelength converter based on a nonlinear polarization switch (NPS) and a DI is proposed and presented for the wavelength conversion of nonreturn-to-zero (NRZ) signals. An all-optical nonreturn-to-zero to return-to-zero (NRZ-to-RZ) format converter with tunable duty cycles is achieved by the DI with variable delays. The 40 Gb/s reconfigurable optical OR/NOR gate in a single SOA, followed a tunable optical bandpass filter (OBF) and a DI, optical 2R regeneration using an SOA-DI are investigated. It is found that this combinative realization of filters has been endowed with great flexibility and quality for 40 Gb/s optical logic and 2R regeneration.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate experimentally a novel scheme to realize all-optical up-conversion and wavelength-conversion based on the bi-directional-pump four-wave mixing (FWM) effect in high nonlinear fibers (HNLFs).The pump is generated with optical carrier suppression in a Mach-Zehnder modulator.The two pumps are always parallel and phase-locked.A balance-detection photo-detector for optical signal detection is employed with 3-dB improvement in power penalty.The 2.5-Gb/s signals are transmitted successfully over the 25-km single-mode fiber in 30-GHz radio over fiber (ROF) systems.

Abstract:We design and fabricate a four-port wavelength-selective optical router on silicon-on-insulator wafer for photonic networks-on-chip. The router consists of four basic operation blocks. Each is constructed by one microring resonator (MRR) based add-drop filter rather than the traditional two microrings based 2 x 2 optical crossbar. It can provide multiwavelength routing for each path to increase the aggregate data transmission bandwidth. The possible 12 I/O routing paths are experimentally observed in the transmission spectra and each of them has the ability to route four group wavelengths simultaneously in the measured spectral range. The device has a small footprint (similar to 78 x 100 mu m(2)) and low power consumption (6.58 mW).

Abstract:We demonstrate all-optical wavelength conversion (AOWC) of non-return-to-zero (NRZ) signal based on cross-gain modulation in a single heterogeneously integrated III-V-on-silicon semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) with an optical bandpass filter. The SOA is 500 μm long and consumes less than 250 mW electrical power. We experimentally demonstrate 12.5 Gb/s and 40 Gb/s AOWC for both wavelength up and down conversion.

Abstract:All-optical wavelength conversion for 2×11.64 GBaud adaptively-modulated orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (AM-OFDM) signals with QPSK/16QAM formats is experimentally demonstrated in a silicon waveguide. The AM-OFDM signal with partly higher- (and lower-) order formats on lower- (and higher-) frequency subcarriers has better overall conversion performance in receiving optical signal-to-noise ratio and power penalty. In comparison with the OFDM-QPSK signal, at the BER of 3.8×10-3, the bit rate increases 11.64 Gbit/s per channel almost without conversion power penalty increased by replacing the QPSK sequence with the 16QAM sequence on half subcarriers.

Abstract:Simultaneous wavelength conversion based on four-wave mixing (FWM) for 10-Gb/s NRZ payload and 2.5-Gb/s OFDM label signals in optical switching network is experimentally demonstrated. The dual-pump scheme based on FWM in semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) is employed and simultaneous wavelength conversion for optical packet with one optical payload of 10-Gb/s non-return-to-zero (NRZ) on-off keying (OOK) signals and one optical label of 2.5-Gb/s OFDM signals are realized. The bit-error-rate performance is evaluated for both payload and label after wavelength conversion.

Abstract:We design and fabricate a wavelength-selective nonblocking 4 × 4 silicon optical router based on microring resonator for use in future integrated photonic interconnection networks. We successfully demonstrate 12 possible I/O routing paths and present 13 nonblocking operating states, including four broadcasting states, with worst-case extinction ratio and cross talk of 21.05 and -21.56 dB, respectively. Thermal tuning is employed to compensate the resonance shift of microring resonators caused by fabrication errors and adjust the resonance to match the International Telecommunication Unit grid with the channel spacing of 100 GHz.

Abstract:This paper experimentally demonstrates the multi-hop operation of an optical-label switching router with label swapping and optical 3R at each hop. A semiconductor optical amplifier based Mach-Zehnder interferometer wavelength converter performs reshaping. A Fabry-Perot filter all-optically recovers the clock from the incoming packets in burst mode. The synchronous modulation through a Mach-Zehnder modulator using the recovered clock performs retiming. The 3R regeneration maintains a good signal quality through multiple hops, which is important for scalable optical networking.

Abstract:The wavelength conversion of 2.5 Gbit/s non return-to-zero optical pulse based on cross-gain modulation in semiconductor optical amplifier is demonstrated. The separation for up-conversion is larger than 10 nm, and down-conversion is larger than 20 nm. The relationship between the receiver power and bit error rate is shown. The co-propagation wavelength conversion is used in this experiment. The signal wavelength is fixed, the probe optical signal is extra-cavity laser with the tunable wavelength. No bit error is observed after a measurement of more than one hour, which will be useful in the application of WDM optical networks.
