Abstract:Duffing oscillators are increasingly explored for vibration and noise reduction, owing to their wideband properties and rich dynamic behavior. Applications involving piezoelectric treatments typically take advantage from using negative capacitances, as their effect is similar to enhanced electromechanical coupling. This paper integrates negative capacitance to a recently introduced synthetic impedance-based Duffing-type inductive shunt for frequency bandwidth enhancement. The frequency-domain numerical and experimental results show that, as the negative-to-piezoelectric capacitance ratio of the fully digital nonlinear shunt circuit approximates the stability limit, the in-phase and the out-of-phase modes of the Duffing-type shunt become increasingly separated from each other, which enables high-energy branches that are wider than the case without negative capacitance. Under the maximum capacitance ratio attained for two different setups, bandwidth enhancements around 65%–75% have been numerically predicted and experimentally confirmed. This nonlinear piezoelectric shunt with enhanced response is promising for low-level, wideband noise and vibration applications requiring precise parameter tuning, where the sort of input excitation can trigger its broadband, steady-state dynamic responses.
