Abstract:We introduce the wavelet transform for phase reconstruction of SPIDER in this pa per. With the technique, we can directly read the phase from the wavelet transfo rm of spectral interferogram, which essentially eliminates the phase noise resul ting from improper temporal filters in the conventional Fourier method. The simu lation and the practical example proved the validity and reliability of this tec hnique. This technique will find more applications in generation and characteriz ation of monocycle optical pulses.

Abstract:The segmented planar imaging detector for electro-optical reconnaissance (SPIDER) based on interferometric imaging can greatly reduce the mass and volume of the system while maintaining the same resolution as traditional optical imaging system. However, only in single wavelength operative mode can the system ensure the sampled frequency is an integral multiple of the fundamental frequency. Under this circumstance, the system’s imaging quality is poor due to low radial sampling rate of the system’s spectrum and a lack of zero frequency. In order to solve this problem, an improved scheme of SPIDER system with interference arms with lens number odd–even alternately distributed is proposed, meanwhile giving its specific lens arrangement and matching mode. The proposed scheme can sample zero frequency and effectively improve radial sampling rate of the system’s spectrum. At the same time, it has the advantage of strong versatility, almost no increase in hardware cost and no sacrifice of the field of view. Through computer simulation, it is shown that the improved SPIDER system can achieve better imaging results than the traditional SPIDER system when the number of interference arms is the same.

Abstract:Based on further studies on spectral phase interferometry for direct electric-field reconstruction(SPIDER) from both hardware and software,SPIDER phase measurement system is built.In the SPIDER system,a BBO crystal of 50 μm thickness is used to ensure the bandwidth,and the beam splitters are modified to dicrease the introduced dispersion.Improved on the SPIDER device and a SPIDER measurement software based on Labview is developed,which can be used for real-time measurement.In the reconstruction procedure,the measured interference of the second harmonic of the pulse pair is taken as the rapidly changed linear part,and the phase only for the spectral range that has clear fringes is constructed,which improve the accuracy greatly.The characterization of Ti∶sapphire pulse is measured with the instruments,and the validility of the method is proved compared with the autocorrelation method.
Large-scale Phase Retrieval Method for Wavefront Reconstruction with Multi-Stage Random Phase Modulation

Abstract:Phase retrieval method is popularly applied in wavefront sensing and quantitative phase imaging, while the stagnation problem in phase retrieval could seriously affect the accuracy and efficiency of the largescale wavefront reconstruction. In this paper, we proposed an arbitrary complex-valued reconstruction method with multi-stage random phase modulation to eliminate the stagnation problem. The random phase modulation maximum breaks any symmetry and enriches information on diffraction patterns. The multistage random phase modulation is achieved by rotating structured light illumination through row-to-column conversion, which not only provides faster convergence speed but also circumvents resampling errors during the calculation. Besides, without an accurate model of illumination function and prior information of under-test wavefront, the arbitrary complex wavefront and the illumination function are both accurately reconstructed, simultaneously. We further demonstrate that our method is effective for the vortex phase plate measurement without introducing extra errors.
Accurate Phase Retrieval Algorithm Based on Linear Correlation in Self-Calibration Phase-Shifting Interferometry with Blind Phase Shifts

Abstract:The self-calibration algorithm is a powerful phase map reconstruction technique for phase-shifting interferometry with random phase shifts. The existing phase reconstruction algorithms has some restrictions on preconditions including the uniformity of background and the well distributed phase shifts. In this paper, a simple, applicable and accurate phase retrieval algorithm based on linear correlation (LCA) with non-iterative characteristic is proposed to improve this issue. Without pre-filtering, the algorithm searches for optimal linear combination coefficients of the difference intensity map by maximizing the linear correlation, and then phase shifts can be solved by these searched coefficients. Finally, according to the obtained phase shifts, the phase map is readily retrieved by using the matrix form of the linear equations. The whole phase retrieval process has no complicated mathematical transformation, hence it is simply and easily implemented. Good performance of the proposed LCA are verified by reconstructed phase maps from multiple kinds of simulation and experiment interferograms with blind phase shifts, along with the comparisons to that of the popular algorithms. Especially, the proposed algorithm has an excellent accuracy of phase reconstruction when the phase shift distributes unevenly.

Abstract:In inertial confinement fusion high energy system, the mid-spatial frequency (MSF) errors of optical elements induced by computer numerical control tools lead to damage to the optical system. Based on the characteristics of the mid-spatial frequency errors, it is measured by using phase retrieval technology. Compared with conventional measurement methods such as interferometry, MSF errors can be measured by phase retrieval without complex measurement systems and large aperture optical elements with MSF errors can be measured via phase retrieval in theory. In this paper, we compare multiple phase retrieval algorithms that are used to measure optical element with MSF errors and explore approaches to improve the quality of results. First, we briefly introduce the feature of MSF errors and the relation between the wavefront of optical element with MSF errors and its diffraction pattern. Second, multiple phase retrieval algorithms including error-reduction (ER) algorithm, hybrid input-output (HIO) algorithm and oversampling smoothness (OSS) algorithm are adapted for the measurement of MSF errors. According to the bandwidth and structure characteristics of MSF errors, the convergence speed and the accuracy of above algorithms are discussed and compared. Then, according to the characteristics of different algorithms, different retrieved wavefront phase via using these algorithms are integrated to improve the accuracy of results. Last, based on the feature of MSF errors, the priori knowledge of algorithms is also discussed to further gear up the convergence speed and the accuracy of algorithms.

Abstract:Spectral-domain Optical Coherence Tomography (SD-OCT) systems generally have nonlinear sampling problems in wavenumber domain. In order to realize the precise positioning of the discrete interfaces and the high-quality reconstruction of OCT images under conventional fast Fourier transform, it is necessary to solve the precise calibration problem of the absolute wavenumber of the discrete sampling points in the spectrometer. In this paper, an absolute wavenumber calibration method based on the absolute phase of the characteristic spectral line and the constraint polynomial fitting phase under precise optical path difference was proposed. In the sample arm of the SD-OCT system, metal gauges with precise thickness difference are used to obtain the absolute phase value of the characteristic spectral line, and the phase wrapping times corresponding to the characteristic spectral line are further accurately solved. Thus, this method overcomes the 2π ambiguity of spectral phase in conventional interferometric phase methods. At the same time, combined with the polynomial fitting phase of the high signal-to-ratio region under window constraint, the accurate calibration of the absolute wavenumber of each sampling point is realized. Finally, comprehensive comparisons between the proposed method and the traditional resampling method in terms of discrete interface positioning, axial resolution and image reconstruction quality verifies the significant advantages of this method.
The Position Shifting of Frequency Spectrum of Fourier Transform in the Application of Aspheric Surface Testing

Abstract:In the measurement of aspheric surfaces, spatial phase modulation technology is always combined. With a tilt, the linear spatial carrier is introduced to enhance the signal noise ratio (SNR). Then using DFT on the interferogram, after spectrum shifting, the first order spectrum filter and IDFT, the wavefront phase of aspheric surface is obtained. In this paper, the traditional way to introduce spatial carrier, namely that the center of the first order spectrum is positioned on the x axis, is analyzed. This method exist a limitation which may influence the testing result. Thus a new method is put forward here. Make sure the slope of spatial carrier is unvaried, and transfer the first order spectrum to the bisector of x axis and y axis. This change can not only reserve the low frequency components of the first order spectrum, but also keep the high frequency components at a large extent. So in some circumstance, the wavefront phase of aspheric surface with a large PV value can't be recovered accurately by the traditional spatial carrier way, but it can be recovered accurately by the new way. This greatly expands the testing range of wavefront of aspheric surface.

Abstract:A single-shot reflective shearing point diffraction interferometer (S-SRSPDI) is designed for large-aperture dynamic wavefront measurements. The PDI is integrated on the small substrate with properly designed thin film. The wavefront under test is reflected by the front and rear surfaces of the substrate respectively to generate an interferogram with high linear-carrier frequency, which is used to reconstruct the wavefront by means of the Fourier transform algorithm. In this paper, the analytic formula of intensity distribution of the interferogram is derived. The parameters related with the carrier frequency of fringes are discussed. The method to optimize the contrast of the interferogram is proposed by analyzing the reflective polarization effects. In addition, the spurious fringes of the interferogram are removed by the proper designed blocking film. S-SRSPDI was applied to detect the dynamic wavefront with a diameter of 400 mm. The measured aberrations are in good agreement with those obtained by the shearing method, which verifies that the proposed S-SRSPDI is a powerful tool for large-aperture dynamic wavefront measurements. Abstract:360° three-dimensional (3D) shape measurement is of great significance in the fields of defect detection and reverse modeling. Fringe projection profilometry (FPP) is widely used due to the advantages of high-accuracy and full-field measurement, but the movement of object corrupts the phase measurement. Stereo phase unwrapping (SPU) technique is adopted to improve imaging efficiency, but requires multi-cameras which resulting in high system complexity and cost. In this work, we proposed virtual stereo phase unwrapping (VSPU) method for high-speed 360° 3D shape measurement. This method uses the virtual camera-projector systems formed by the rotation of object for phase unwrapping which only requires single camera-projector to achieve 360° 3D shape measurement. The phase consistency checking in SPU method is modified. Experiments demonstrate that proposed method has strong robustness and can achieve 360° 3D shape measurement in 47 s with an accuracy of 100 μm during continuous rotation of the object.

Abstract:Electromagnetic interference (EMI) source reconstruction typically requires accurate measurements of both near-field magnitude and phase information. In some cases, an accurate phase measurement may not be practically feasible. A phase-retrieval method based on phaseless and single-plane near-field scanning is presented in this paper. By using an interpolation technique, the original data of field magnitude used for reconstruction can be divided into two groups: the sampling and interpolation groups. Subsequently, iteration algorithm together with the singular value decomposition method is employed to reconstruct the equivalent dipole model of the EMI source. Both numerical example and measurement example are given to verify the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm. The major advantage of the proposed method is that it can save a half scanning time and still produces a valid EMI source model. It also shows an ability to reduce some measurement errors.

Abstract:The numerical analyses have been conducted for characterizing femtosecond laser pulses with the spectral phase interferometry for direct electrical field reconstruction (SPIDER). The spectral phases and amplitudes of the typical femtosecond pulses were reconstructed, as well as the temporal intensity profiles and temporal phases of these pulses were retrieved. The numerical results are in accord with experimental observations.

Abstract:We present an experimental set up and the calculation approach for the measureme n t of the spectral phase of femtosecond laser pulse by using a spectral phase int erferometry for direct electric reconstruction (SPIDER) technique in this paper, the method for determining crucial parameters as Ωand τwas given. W ith the femtosecond laser pulse from the Ti:sapphire laser, we obtained the phase of the laser spectrum by using the SPIDER, the temporal profile of the original laser pulse was deduced based on the result. It reveals the FWHM width is 107fs, which is in good agreement with the result measured directly by using an autocorrelat or.

Abstract:The Fourier transform with a side-band filter is the well-established method for reconstructing off-axis fringe-type holograms due to its ease of implementation and fast processing. However, this method works in reciprocal space and requires inversion of a side-band sub-region, which can degrade the spatial resolution of reconstructed wave compared to original hologram. We present a new method, the spatial phase-shifting (SPS) method, for real-space wave reconstruction of off-axis electron holograms. We describe the working principles of the SPS method in analogy to the temporal phase-shifting method. We conducted both hologram simulation and experiments to evaluate its applicability and effectiveness. We compared the wave reconstruction results of the SPS and the conventional Fourier transform method, highlighting the advantages of the newly proposed SPS method. Our results demonstrate that the proposed SPS method is particularly effective for real-space wave reconstruction of small-sized hologram, providing an alternative approach to off-axis type holography wave reconstruction.

Abstract:The recent introduction of coherent optical communications has created a compelling need for ultra-fast phase-sensitive measurement techniques operating at milliwatt peak power levels and in time scales ranging from sub-picoseconds to nanoseconds. Previous reports of ultrafast optical signal measurements in integrated platforms[8-10] include time-lens temporal imaging on a silicon chip[8,9] and waveguide-based Frequency-Resolved Optical Gating (FROG). Time-lens imaging is phase insensitive while waveguide-based FROG methods require the integration of long tuneable delay lines - still an unsolved challenge. Here, we report a device capable of characterizing both the amplitude and phase of ultrafast optical pulses with the aid of a synchronized incoherently-related clock pulse. It is based on a novel variation of Spectral Phase Interferometry for Direct Electric-Field Reconstruction (SPIDER)that exploits degenerate four-wave-mixing (FWM) in a CMOS compatible chip. We measure pulses with <100mW peak power, a frequency bandwidth >1THz, and up to 100ps pulsewidths, yielding a time-bandwidth product (TBP)>100.

Abstract:Ultrasonic nondestructive testing is of great significance to ensure the working of equipment in aerospace, petrochemical, railway, and other fields. Transverse wave ultrasonic testing is an important method for the detection of internal defects in solids due to its advantages of weak attenuation of vibration mode, low sound speed, and high spatial resolution. However, due to the vibration characteristics of piezoelectric wafers, conventional ultrasonic transducers cannot directly transmit and receive transverse waves and need to refract the transverse waves with the help of oblique incidence, and due to the particularity of oblique incidence, it is necessary to consider the refraction effect and slope detection simultaneously, which increases the burden of ultrasonic imaging reconstruction calculation. Therefore, a wavenumber-domain fast reconstruction technique using ultrasonic scanning for transverse waves is proposed. The method is built based on classical synthetic aperture focusing technology (SAFT) by integrating the coordinate transformation in wavenumber domain and transverse wave wavefield extrapolation for the application of oblique incidence transverse wave imaging. The simulation and experimental results show that the proposed method can build excellent detection results when detecting transverse holes, cracks, and hemispherical flat-bottom holes with refraction angles from 20 degrees to 60 degrees. Compared with the time-domain synthetic aperture focusing technique, the computational efficiency of this method is improved by at least 100 times without losing the reconstruction accuracy.

Abstract:This paper demonstrated the experiment results for characterizing femtosecond pulses from a Ti:sapphire oscillator with a spectral phase interference direct electric-field reconstruction (SPIDER) apparatus. The model of spectral filter of the nonlinear crystal in a SPIDER apparatus was constructed. The relationship between the bandwidth of the conversion efficiency of BBO crystal and the crystal thickness was calculated. The choice range of the BBO thickness adapting to the different widths of pulses was discussed.

Abstract:Wavefront single-pixel imaging (WSPI) is an important tool for simultaneously measuring the amplitude and phase of an unknown field, especially suitable for wavefront detecting in some special wavelengths where array detectors are immature or even unavailable. Here, a passive-detection-based WSPI method using a flexible SLM-based common-path interferometer is proposed, in which by detecting the zero-order diffraction of the SLM directly, the common-path phase-shift or off-axis technique can be flexibly realized by a "sandwich" structure consisting of a half-wave plate, a SLM, and a polarizer. The reference light can be conveniently chosen as the direct reflected light from the SLM, the unmodulated light from the pixels of the SLM, or the light from both of them. We experimentally verify the feasibility and advantages of the proposed method. We further demonstrate the method for wavefront measurement of a dragonfly wing, which suggests it can be used for quantitative phase imaging. It provides a high-resolution spatial wavefront passive detection technique, with a compact, stable, and flexible setup, which has lots of applications involving three-dimensional imaging, aberration correction, digital holographic measurement, and digital microscopy.

Recovery of phase constant from two-photon interference pattern by phase retrieval algorithm

Abstract:For a HOM interferometer with two independent incident pulses, the interference pattern can be affected by adding a dispersion medium on one of the incident directions, but there hasn't been a method to reconstruct the phase constant of the medium from the interference pattern. To solve it, we adapted two phase retrieval algorithms and used them to recover the phase difference function between the two incident fields, from which the phase constant can be derived. Through simulations, we verified the convergence, accuracy, and robustness of the algorithms, indicating that this phase recovery process can be completed well with negligible error. Our research finds a new application direction for the phase recovery algorithm, provides an algorithmic tool for high-order dispersion measurement using two-photon interference, and paves the way for a higher resolution and phase-sensitive quantum tomography.
