Abstract:Reliably characterised pulses are the starting point of any application of ultrafast techniques. Unfortunately, experimental constraints do not always allow optimising the characterisation conditions. This dictates the need for refined analysis methods. Here we show that neutral networks can provide a viable characterisation when applied to data from SPIDER. We have adopted a cascade of convolutional networks, addressing the multiparameter structure of the interferogram with a reasonable computing power. In particular, the necessity of precalibration is reduced, thus pointing towards the introduction of neural networks in more generic arrangements.

Abstract:The recent introduction of coherent optical communications has created a compelling need for ultra-fast phase-sensitive measurement techniques operating at milliwatt peak power levels and in time scales ranging from sub-picoseconds to nanoseconds. Previous reports of ultrafast optical signal measurements in integrated platforms[8-10] include time-lens temporal imaging on a silicon chip[8,9] and waveguide-based Frequency-Resolved Optical Gating (FROG). Time-lens imaging is phase insensitive while waveguide-based FROG methods require the integration of long tuneable delay lines - still an unsolved challenge. Here, we report a device capable of characterizing both the amplitude and phase of ultrafast optical pulses with the aid of a synchronized incoherently-related clock pulse. It is based on a novel variation of Spectral Phase Interferometry for Direct Electric-Field Reconstruction (SPIDER)that exploits degenerate four-wave-mixing (FWM) in a CMOS compatible chip. We measure pulses with <100mW peak power, a frequency bandwidth >1THz, and up to 100ps pulsewidths, yielding a time-bandwidth product (TBP)>100.

Abstract:Any ultrafast optical spectroscopy experiment is usually accompanied by the necessary routine of ultrashort-pulse characterisation. The majority of pulse characterisation approaches solve either a one-dimensional (e.g. via interferometry) or a two-dimensional (e.g. via frequency-resolved measurements) problem. Solution of the two-dimensional pulse-retrieval problem is generally more consistent due to problem's over-determined nature. In contrast, the one-dimensional pulse-retrieval problem is impossible to solve unambiguously as ultimately imposed by the fundamental theorem of algebra. In cases where additional constraints are involved, the one-dimensional problem may be possible to solve, however, existing iterative algorithms lack generality, and often stagnate for complicated pulse shapes. Here we use a deep neural network to unambiguously solve a constrained one-dimensional pulse-retrieval problem and show the potential of fast, reliable, and complete pulse characterisation using interferometric cross-correlation time traces (determined by the pulses with partial spectral overlap).

Abstract:We introduce the wavelet transform for phase reconstruction of SPIDER in this pa per. With the technique, we can directly read the phase from the wavelet transfo rm of spectral interferogram, which essentially eliminates the phase noise resul ting from improper temporal filters in the conventional Fourier method. The simu lation and the practical example proved the validity and reliability of this tec hnique. This technique will find more applications in generation and characteriz ation of monocycle optical pulses.

Abstract:Based on further studies on spectral phase interferometry for direct electric-field reconstruction(SPIDER) from both hardware and software,SPIDER phase measurement system is built.In the SPIDER system,a BBO crystal of 50 μm thickness is used to ensure the bandwidth,and the beam splitters are modified to dicrease the introduced dispersion.Improved on the SPIDER device and a SPIDER measurement software based on Labview is developed,which can be used for real-time measurement.In the reconstruction procedure,the measured interference of the second harmonic of the pulse pair is taken as the rapidly changed linear part,and the phase only for the spectral range that has clear fringes is constructed,which improve the accuracy greatly.The characterization of Ti∶sapphire pulse is measured with the instruments,and the validility of the method is proved compared with the autocorrelation method.

Abstract:Despite the multitude of available methods, the characterisation of ultrafast pulses remains a challenging endeavour, especially at the single-photon level. We introduce a pulse characterisation scheme that maps the magnitude of its short-time Fourier transform. Contrary to many well-known solutions it does not require nonlinear effects and is therefore suitable for single-photon-level measurements. Our method is based on introducing a series of controlled time and frequency shifts, where the latter is performed via an electro-optic modulator allowing a fully-electronic experimental control. We characterized the full spectral and temporal width of a classical and single-photon-level pulse and successfully reconstructed their spectral phase and amplitude. The method can be extended by implementing a phase-sensitive measurement and is naturally well-suited to partially-incoherent light.

Abstract:In this manuscript we demonstrate a method to reconstruct the wavefront of focused beams from a measured diffraction pattern behind a diffracting mask in real-time. The phase problem is solved by means of a neural network, which is trained with simulated data and verified with experimental data. The neural network allows live reconstructions within a few milliseconds, which previously with iterative phase retrieval took several seconds, thus allowing the adjustment of complex systems and correction by adaptive optics in real time. The neural network additionally outperforms iterative phase retrieval with high noise diffraction patterns.

Abstract:The numerical analyses have been conducted for characterizing femtosecond laser pulses with the spectral phase interferometry for direct electrical field reconstruction (SPIDER). The spectral phases and amplitudes of the typical femtosecond pulses were reconstructed, as well as the temporal intensity profiles and temporal phases of these pulses were retrieved. The numerical results are in accord with experimental observations.

Abstract:Snapshot channeled imaging spectropolarimetry (SCISP), which can achieve spectral and polarization imaging without scanning (a single exposure), is a promising optical technique. As Fourier transform is used to reconstruct information, SCISP has its inherent limitations such as channel crosstalk, resolution and accuracy drop, the complex phase calibration, et al. To overcome these drawbacks, a nonlinear technique based on neural networks (NNs) is introduced to replace the role of Fourier reconstruction. Herein, abundant spectral and polarization datasets were built through specially designed generators. The established NNs can effectively learn the forward conversion procedure through minimizing a loss function, subsequently enabling a stable output containing spectral, polarization, and spatial information. The utility and reliability of the proposed technique is confirmed by experiments, which are proved to maintain high spectral and polarization accuracy. Engineering spectro-temporal light states with physics-trained deep learning

Abstract:Frequency synthesis and spectro-temporal control of optical wave packets are central to ultrafast science, with supercontinuum (SC) generation standing as one remarkable example. Through passive manipulation, femtosecond (fs) pulses from nJ-level lasers can be transformed into octave-spanning spectra, supporting few-cycle pulse outputs when coupled with external pulse compressors. While strategies such as machine learning have been applied to control the SC's central wavelength and bandwidth, their success has been limited by the nonlinearities and strong sensitivity to measurement noise. Here, we propose and demonstrate how a physics-trained convolutional neural network (P-CNN) can circumvent such challenges, showing few-fold speedups over the direct approaches. We highlight three key advancements enabled by the P-CNN approach: (i) on-demand control over spectral features of SC, (ii) direct generation of sub-3-cycle pulses from the highly nonlinear fiber, and (iii) the production of high-order solitons, capturing distinct "breather" dynamics in both spectral and temporal domains. This approach heralds a new era of arbitrary spectro-temporal state engineering, with transformative implications for ultrafast and quantum science.

Abstract:We present an experimental set up and the calculation approach for the measureme n t of the spectral phase of femtosecond laser pulse by using a spectral phase int erferometry for direct electric reconstruction (SPIDER) technique in this paper, the method for determining crucial parameters as Ωand τwas given. W ith the femtosecond laser pulse from the Ti:sapphire laser, we obtained the phase of the laser spectrum by using the SPIDER, the temporal profile of the original laser pulse was deduced based on the result. It reveals the FWHM width is 107fs, which is in good agreement with the result measured directly by using an autocorrelat or.
Self-Induced Phase Locking of Terahertz Frequency Combs in a Phase-Sensitive Hyperspectral Near-Field Nanoscope

Abstract:Chip-scale, electrically-pumped terahertz (THz) frequency-combs (FCs) rely on nonlinear four-wave-mixing processes, and have a nontrivial phase relationship between the evenly spaced set of emitted modes. Simultaneous monitoring and manipulation of the intermode phase coherence, without any external seeding or active modulation, is a very demanding task for which there has hitherto been no technological solution. Here, a self-mixing intermode-beatnote spectroscopy system is demonstrated, based on THz quantum cascade laser FCs, in which light is back-scattered from the tip of a scanning near-field optical-microscope (SNOM) and the intracavity reinjection monitored. This enables to exploit the sensitivity of FC phase-coherence to optical feedback and, for the first time, manipulate the amplitude, linewidth and frequency of the intermode THz FC beatnote using the feedback itself. Stable phase-locked regimes are used to construct a FC-based hyperspectral, THz s-SNOM nanoscope. This nanoscope provides 160 nm spatial resolution, coherent detection of multiple phase-locked modes, and mapping of the THz optical response of nanoscale materials up to 3.5 THz, with noise-equivalent-power (NEP) ≈400 pW √Hz-1 . This technique can be applied to the entire infrared range, opening up a new approach to hyper-spectral near-field imaging with wide-scale applications in the study of plasmonics and quantum science, inter alia.

Abstract:Spectral reconstruction, critical for understanding sample composition, is extensively applied in fields like remote sensing, geology, and medical imaging. However, existing spectral reconstruction methods require bulky equipment or complex electronic reconstruction algorithms, which limit the system’s performance and applications. This paper presents a novel flexible all-optical opto-intelligence spectrometer, termed OIS, using a diffractive neural network for high-precision spectral reconstruction, featuring low energy consumption and light-speed processing. Simulation experiments indicate that the OIS is able to achieve high-precision spectral reconstruction under spatially coherent and incoherent light sources without relying on any complex electronic algorithms, and integration with a simplified electrical calibration module can further improve the performance of OIS. To demonstrate the robustness of OIS, spectral reconstruction was also successfully conducted on real-world datasets. Our work provides a valuable reference for using diffractive neural networks in spectral interaction and perception, contributing to ongoing developments in photonic computing and machine learning.

Spectral splitting and concentration of broadband light using neural networks

Abstract:Compact photonic elements that control both the diffraction and interference of light offer superior performance at ultra-compact dimensions. Unlike conventional optical structures, these diffractive optical elements can provide simultaneous control of spectral and spatial profile of light. However, the inverse-design of such a diffractive optical element is time-consuming with current algorithms, and the designs generally lack experimental validation. Here, we develop a neural network model to experimentally design and validate SpliCons; a special type of diffractive optical element that can achieve spectral splitting and simultaneous concentration of broadband light. We use neural networks to exploit nonlinear operations that result from wavefront reconstruction through a phase plate. Our results show that the neural network model yields enhanced spectral splitting performance for phase plates with quantitative assessment compared to phase plates that are optimized via local search optimization algorithm. The capabilities of the phase plates optimized via neural network are experimentally validated by comparing the intensity distribution at the output plane. Once the neural networks are trained, we manage to design SpliCons with 96.6 $\pm$ 2.3% accuracy within 2 seconds, which is orders of magnitude faster than iterative search algorithms. We openly share the fast and efficient framework that we develop in order to contribute to the design and implementation of diffractive optical elements that can lead to transformative effects in microscopy, spectroscopy, and solar energy applications.

Abstract:Pump–probe spectroscopy is a gold standard technique to investigate ultrafast electronic dynamics of material systems. Pulsed laser sources employed to pump and probe samples feature typically high peak power, which may give rise to coherent artifacts under a wide range of experimental conditions. Among those, the Cross-Phase Modulation (XPM) artifact has gathered particular attention as it produces particularly high signal distortions, in some cases hiding a relevant portion of the dynamics of interest. Here, we present a novel approach for the removal of XPM coherent artifacts in ultrafast pump–probe spectroscopy, based on deep learning. We developed XPMnet, a convolutional neural network able to reconstruct electronic relaxation dynamics otherwise embedded in artifact distortions, thus enabling the retrieval of fundamental information to characterize the material system under investigation. We validated XPMnet on Indium Tin Oxide (ITO), a heavily doped semiconductor displaying a plasmon resonance in the near-infrared, which is a key material for the development of infrared plasmonic devices. Pump–probe measurements of ITO show strong XPM artifacts that overwhelm the electronic cooling dynamics of interest due to the low optical density of the material at near-infrared photon energies. XPMnet retrieved ITO electronic dynamics in excellent agreement with expected outcomes in terms of material-specific time constants. This artificial intelligence method constitutes a powerful solution for XPM artifact removal, providing high accuracy and short execution time. We believe that this model could be integrated in real time in pump–probe setups to increase the amount of information one can derive from ultrafast spectroscopy measurements.

Abstract:Near-field scanning can achieve nanoscale resolution while ultrashort pulse diagnostic tools can characterize femtosecond pulses. Yet currently it is still challenging to nonperturbatively characterize the near field of an ultrashort optical pulse with nanofemtoscale spatiotemporal resolution. To address this challenge, we propose to develop a nonlinear nanoprobe composed of a silica fiber taper, a nanowire, and nonlinear fluorescent spheres. Using such a nanoprobe, we also report proof-of-principle characterization of femtosecond optical pulse through interferometric autocorrelation measurement.
