Abstract:The optoelectronic reservoir computing (RC) is considered as a promising optical signal processing technique for nonlinear channel equalization. In this paper, a parallel optoelectronic RC scheme with a dual-polarization Mach- Zehnder modulator (DPol-MZM) is proposed and demonstrated numerically. The nonlinear channel equalization performance is greatly enhanced compared with the traditional optoelectronic RC scheme and Volterra-based DSP scheme, since the nonlinear dynamics of RC are enriched from the dual-polarization methodology. Besides, the system efficiency is improved with a single DPol-MZM.

Abstract:A new type equalizer for HDTV transmission system based on VSB technology to cope with severely distorted channel situation is proposed. The ordinary equalizer, decision feedback (DFE) structure and recursive equalizing algorithm is used. Because of the multipath spreading in FIR, the ordinary DFE has a slow convergence of the weight coefficient in the former condition, and the recursive algorithm cannot work with the signal submerged in interference. The new equalizer adopts indirect equalizing style and new algorithm is used for fast estimation of the channel impulse responses used as initial weight coefficients of the adaptive equalizer. A modified DFE structure of decision feedback equalizer is proposed to get faster convergence of weight coefficients. The simulation results show that the new style equalizer can work well in severely distorted propagation channel while the ordinary equalizer cannot, and it was tested in Brazil.

Abstract:In this paper, a compact passive equalizer for differential transmission channel is designed in TSV-based three-dimensional integrated circuits (3-D ICs). The compact size of the equalizer is achieved by a square shunt metal line. Three simplified odd-mode half circuit models are proposed for ground-signal-signal-ground (G-S-S-G) type TSVs, differential on-interposer interconnects, and differential channels, respectively. Those simplified models merely consist of frequency-independent elements and can accurately predict the differential insertion losses up to 20 GHz. Moreover, the electrical parameters of the proposed serial resistance-inductance (RL) type equalizers are derived from the system transfer functions and optimized by virtue of the time-domain inter-symbol interference cancellation technique. Further, the geometrical parameters of the RL equalizers are calculated by using a genetic algorithm based multi-objective optimization method. Finally, the performance of the designed RL equalizer is validated by both frequency- and time-domain simulations for 20 Gb/s high-speed differential signaling.

Abstract:Nonlinear impairment is one of the critical limits to enhancing the performance of high-speed communication systems. Traditional digital signal processing (DSP)-based nonlinear channel equalization schemes are influenced by limited bandwidth, high power consumption, and high processing latency. Optoelectronic reservoir computing (RC) is considered a promising optical signal processing (OSP) technique with merits such as large bandwidth, high power efficiency, and low training complexity. In this paper, optoelectronic RC was employed to solve the nonlinear channel equalization problem. A parallel optoelectronic RC scheme with a dual-polarization Mach-Zehnder modulator (DPol-MZM) is proposed and demonstrated numerically. The nonlinear channel equalization performance was greatly enhanced compared with the traditional optoelectronic RC and the Volterra-based nonlinear DSP schemes. In addition, the system efficiency was improved with a single DPol-MZM.

Abstract:Chromatic dispersion compensation of non-return-to-zero on-off keying (NRZ-OOK) signals with a diverse-vestigial-sideband-filtering feed forward equaliser and a decision feedback equaliser (DVSB-FFEDFE) is presented, in which diverse vestigial sideband (VSB) filtering is realised with a Mach-Zehnder (MZ) filter. In a 10.709 Gbit/s NRZ-OOK system, experiment results show that the standard singlemode fibre transmission distance at 3 dB optical signal-to-noise ratio penalty with DVSB-FFE-DFE is doubled, compared to that with conventional FFE-DFE.

Abstract:We present diverse vestigial-sideband-filtering maximum-likelihood sequence estimation (DVSB-MLSE), a modification of MLSE, for residual chromatic dispersion (CD) compensation in nonreturn-to-zero (NRZ) on-off keying (OOK) systems. While VSB filtering can considerably increase residual CD tolerance of MLSE receivers, the performance of MLSE can be further enhanced by diverse reception, through which the MLSE module jointly equalizes samples from upper and lower VSB filtered signals. Simulation results show that compared to conventional MLSE, DVSB-MLSE increases the residual CD tolerance at 3-dB optical signal-to-noise ratio penalty by 110% in a 42.7-Gb/s NRZ-OOK system.

Abstract:We propose a diverse vestigial-sideband-filtering feed forward equalizer and decision feedback equalizer (DVSB-FFE-DFE), which is capable of compensating residual chromatic dispersion (CD) as well as mitigating fiber nonlinearity in on-off keying (OOK) systems. In DVSBFFE-DFE, the upper and the lower VSB filtered signals are jointly equalized with FFE followed by DFE. Simulation results show that in a 42.7 Gbit/s nonreturn-to-zero OOK system, DVSB-FFE-DFE can effectively mitigate the required optical signal-to-noise ratio penalty induced by residual CD and fiber nonlinearity.

Abstract:Orthogonal signal-division multiplexing (OSDM) is one of the generalized modulation schemes that bring the gap between orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) and single carrier frequency domain equalization (SC-FDE). By performing encoding upon subvectors of each interleaved block, it enjoys a flexible resource management with low peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR). Meanwhile, the OSDM induces the intervector interference (IVI) inherently, which requires a more powerful equalizer. By deriving the input and output system model, this paper proposes a time domain soft decision feedback equalizer (SDFE) on per vector equalization with successful soft interference cancellation (SSIC). In addition, this paper takes the whole OSDM block to perform the channel encoding rather than on each vector of the OSDM. Simulation and experimental results demonstrate that the proposed SDFE with SSIC structure outperforms the conventional minimum mean square error (MMSE) equalizer and the block encoding (BE) scheme outperforms the vector encoding (VE) scheme, because theoretically the longer the encoded bit stream is, the more stable and more confident the maximum a posteriori probability (MAP) decoder will be.

Abstract:We propose an efficient enhanced hybrid equalizer combining the feed forward equalization (FFE) with a modified Volterra filter to mitigate the linear and nonlinear interference for the short-reach optical single side-band (SSB) system. The optical SSB signal is generated by a relatively low-cost dual-drive Mach–Zehnder modulator (DDMZM). The two driving signals are a pair of Hilbert signals with Nyquist pulse-shaped four-level pulse amplitude modulation (NPAM-4). After the fiber transmission, the neighboring received symbols are strongly correlated due to the pulse spreading in time domain caused by the chromatic dispersion (CD). At the receiver equalization stage, the FFE followed by higher order terms of modified Volterra filter, which utilizes the forward and backward neighboring symbols to construct the kernels with strong correlation, are used as an enhanced hybrid equalizer to mitigate the inter symbol interference (ISI) and nonlinear distortion due to the interaction of the CD and the square-law detection. We experimentally demonstrate that the optical SSB NPAM-4 signal of 40 Gb/s transmitting over 80 km standard single mode fiber (SSMF) with a bit-error-rate (BER) of 7.59×10−4.

Abstract:Wireless communications over fast fading channels are challenging, requiring either frequent channel tracking or complicated signaling schemes such as orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) modulation. In this paper, we propose low-complexity frequency domain equalizations to combat fast fading, based on novel discrete delay-time and frequency-Doppler channel models. Exploiting the circular stripe diagonal nature of the frequency-Doppler channel matrix, we introduce low-complexity frequency domain minimum mean square error (MMSE) equalization for OTFS systems with fully resolvable Doppler spreads. We also demonstrate that the proposed MMSE equalization is applicable to conventional orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) and single carrier frequency domain equalization (SC-FDE) systems with short signal frames and partially resolvable Doppler spreads. After generalizing the input-output data symbol relationship, we analyze the equalization performance via channel matrix eigenvalue decomposition and derive a closed-form expression for the theoretical bit-error-rate. Simulation results for OTFS, OFDM, and SC-FDE modulations verify that the proposed low-complexity frequency domain equalization methods can effectively exploit the time diversity over fast fading channels. Even with partially resolvable Doppler spread, the conventional SC-FDE can achieve performance close to OTFS, especially in fast fading channels with a dominating line-of-sight path.

Abstract:Single-carrier frequency domain equalization (SC-FDE), as a mature technique in wireless commutation, is widely researched for signal equalization and compensation utilizing high speed electronic devices such as DSP. In this paper, for the first time, we propose and demonstrate a SC-FDE technique in optical communication system. By adopting SC-FDE technique, after 50km, 80km, 100km transmission for a 10Gb/s ASK single sideband (SSB) signal on a single mode fiber (SMF), the dispersion of optical signa1 is effectively compensated. The SSB signal is generated by a dual-arm Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM) cascading a phase modulator (PM) based on Hilbert Finite impulse response (FIR) digital filter. The results demonstrate, in our proposed SC-FDE model, the eye opening and the clock recovery is improved, and the effect of compensation is enhanced as the transmission distance increases.

Abstract:In this work, we provide both numerical and experimental investigations of equalization-enhanced phase noise (EEPN) in Stokes-vector direct detection (SV-DD) systems. We show that the influence of EEPN cannot be neglected in high symbol rate SV-DD systems after transmission over several hundred kilometers of fibers when electronic chromatic dispersion compensation and lasers with linewidths of the order of Megahertz are employed. Simulation results are presented to evaluate the dependence of EEPN effects on laser linewidth, transmission distance, and symbol rate. Experiments are then conducted in a 56-Gbaud 16-quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) SV-DD system to demonstrate the EEPN-induced performance degradation after 320-km transmission over standard single mode fiber (SSMF).

Abstract:Chromatic dispersion (CD) equalization is one of the core tasks of the digital signal processing (DSP) chain in modern optical coherent receivers. A conventional impulse-invariant method for designing the CD equalization filter is revisited, improved by proper weighting, and reinterpreted as a Fourier series. To improve upon a direct evaluation of the passband least-squares (LS) approximation, we propose to design a CD equalization finite impulse response (FIR) filter based on a discrete LS approximation. The proposed method avoids numerical evaluation of nontrivial functions and relies only on Fourier transform. Its flexibility is corroborated by a filter design demonstration of joint matched filtering and CD equalization.

Abstract:In this paper, the pre- and post-equalizers of all subcarriers are jointly optimized to compensate for optical filtering impairments caused by cascaded reconfigurable optical add-drop multiplexers (ROADMs) in digital subcarrier-multiplexing (SCM) systems. In the proposed scheme, equalizers of all subcarriers are jointly optimized based on a batch gradient descent algorithm and a novel loss function for a limited bit precision is designed to achieve the optimization. The performance is evaluated by extensive simulations in 4-subcarrier SCM systems with an aggregate symbol rate of 65 GBaud. Compared to current equalization schemes, the proposed scheme obtains generalized mutual information (GMI) gains of 0.1-0.3 bits/symbol after the transmission with 10 ROADMs in a linear channel with filtering penalties and amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) noise or a nonlinear channel where fiber nonlinearity and chromatic dispersion (CD) are introduced. The performance is also evaluated by experiments in 4-subcarrier SCM systems with an overall symbol rate of 32 GBaud. Transmission scenarios with different filtering impairments are emulated by a WaveShaper with different bandwidths. When the bandwidth of the WaveShaper is 26 GHz, the GMI gains of the proposed scheme over the current equalization schemes are 0.2-0.75 bits/symbol.

Three order of magnitude BER improvement has been achieved by applying the proposed approach, with the greatly reduced complexity needed for electrical equalization.
