Abstract:Nonlinear impairment is one of the critical limits to enhancing the performance of high-speed communication systems. Traditional digital signal processing (DSP)-based nonlinear channel equalization schemes are influenced by limited bandwidth, high power consumption, and high processing latency. Optoelectronic reservoir computing (RC) is considered a promising optical signal processing (OSP) technique with merits such as large bandwidth, high power efficiency, and low training complexity. In this paper, optoelectronic RC was employed to solve the nonlinear channel equalization problem. A parallel optoelectronic RC scheme with a dual-polarization Mach-Zehnder modulator (DPol-MZM) is proposed and demonstrated numerically. The nonlinear channel equalization performance was greatly enhanced compared with the traditional optoelectronic RC and the Volterra-based nonlinear DSP schemes. In addition, the system efficiency was improved with a single DPol-MZM.

Abstract:A novel nonlinear electrical equalizer (NLEE) based on Volterra theory is proposed for mitigating intra-channel nonlinearities in pseudo-linear coherent optical communication systems. According to the temporal matching condition of intra-channel nonlinear pulse interactions, we just select specific nonlinear terms and reduce the computation complexity considerably. Numerical simulations of 10GBaud coherent quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK) transmission show that the simplified NLEE can efficiently mitigate intra-channel nonlinearities.

Abstract:The optoelectronic reservoir computing (RC) is considered as a promising optical signal processing technique for nonlinear channel equalization. In this paper, a parallel optoelectronic RC scheme with a dual-polarization Mach- Zehnder modulator (DPol-MZM) is proposed and demonstrated numerically. The nonlinear channel equalization performance is greatly enhanced compared with the traditional optoelectronic RC scheme and Volterra-based DSP scheme, since the nonlinear dynamics of RC are enriched from the dual-polarization methodology. Besides, the system efficiency is improved with a single DPol-MZM.

Abstract:The mitigation of intra-channel nonlinearities in 10 Gbaud coherent NRZ-QPSK systems via a nonlinear electrical equaliser based on Volterra theory is experimentally demonstrated. Without the requirement of prior knowledge of the fibre link, the equaliser significantly improves the system performance compared to digital dispersion compensation only.

Abstract:Electrical post-compensation of intrachannel nonlinearities in 10GBaud coherent QPSK transmission systems is proposed. The channel inversion method is implemented with a coarse split-step Fourier algorithm through digital signal processing at the receiver side. Simulation results show that simultaneous compensation of intrachannel nonlinearities and chromatic dispersion can be achieved with much simplified signal processing structure. The required optical signal-to-noise ratio at certain bit error ratio is remarkably reduced when the intrachannel nonlinearities induced impairments are dominant.

Abstract:We propose a joint nonlinear electrical equalization approach in coherent optical discrete-Fourier-transform spread orthogonal-frequency-division-multiplexing (DFT-spread-OFDM) systems with polarization division multiplexing (PDM). This method is based on an adaptive Volterra series expansion for nonlinear distortions of two orthogonal polarizations. The nonlinear electrical equalization is validated through numerical simulation of 100-Gb/s quadrature phase shift keying and 200-Gb/s 16 quadrature amplitude modulation PDM DFT-spread-OFDM systems.

Abstract:In this paper, the equalization techniques for high-speed interconnect transceivers are discussed. Serial interconnect transceivers have been widely adopted for its high data transfer rate, low cost, good noise immunity and low EMI. Signal SNR can be severely degraded by transmission channel. Effects due to channel impairments and tradeoffs among different equalization techniques are discussed in the paper. Implementation examples of key building blocks for high-speed serial transceiver in deep sub-micron CMOS logic process are also introduced.

Abstract:Equalization enhanced phase noise (EEPN) occurs due to the interplay between laser phase noise and electronic dispersion compensation (EDC) module. It degrades significantly the performance of uncompensated long-haul coherent optical fiber communication systems. In this work, a general expression accounting for EEPN is presented based on Gaussian noise model to evaluate the performance of multi-channel optical communication systems using EDC and digital nonlinearity compensation (NLC). The nonlinear interaction between the signal and the EEPN is analyzed. Numerical simulations are carried out in nonlinear Nyquist-spaced wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) coherent transmission systems. Significant performance degradation due to EEPN in the cases of EDC and NLC are observed, with and without the consideration of transceiver (TRx) noise. The validation of the analytical approach has been done via split-step Fourier simulations. The maximum transmission distance and the laser linewidth tolerance are also estimated to provide important insights into the impact of EEPN.

Abstract:In this study, we developed a wide and deep network-based nonlinear equalizer to compensate for nonlinear impairment in coherent optical communication systems. In our proposed equalizer, the power feature factor and inter-symbol feature sequence in the received signal are analyzed by two combined networks, wide and deep, respectively, so that the information contained in the signal can be fully utilized. We designed an experiment using a 120 Gbit/s 64-quadrature amplitude modulation (64-QAM) coherent optical communication system over a 375 km standard single-mode fiber (SSMF) to verify the performance of the proposed wide and deep network-based nonlinear equalizer. The experimental results showed that the proposed wide and deep network-based nonlinear equalizer achieved better performance at lower complexity compared with the traditional neural network-based nonlinear equalizer. The proposed equalizer significantly improved the equalization effect at a cost of a 0.3% increase in parameters, which indicates the potential of the proposed method for application in coherent optical communication systems.

Abstract:Enhanced equalization phase noise (EEPN), generated from the uncompensated dispersion experienced by laser phase noises, can cause serious damage to the transmission quality of optical fiber systems. In this work, the performance of a wideband Nyquist-spaced long-haul nonlinear optical fiber communication systems suffering from EEPN is investigated and discussed through split-step numerical simulations and analytical models based on the perturbation analysis, in the cases of digital nonlinearity compensation (NLC) and electronic dispersion compensation (EDC). The efficiency and the accuracy of the analytical models were validated via simulations, considering the different symbol rates and modulation formats. The performance of the C-band transmission was comprehensively studied based on the model. Our results reveal that the growth of symbol rates and transmission distances aggravates the distortions in the C-band system.

Abstract:High-speed optical transmission systems suffer from severe inter-symbol interferences (ISIs) and nonlinear distortions due to the limited bandwidth and the nonlinear response of optical and electrical components at the transceivers. Previous work has shown the benefits of applying maximum-likelihood sequence estimation (MLSE) to deal with the ISI and using the neural network-based equalizer (NNE) to mitigate strong nonlinearities. However, most of the NNE has a quasi-hard output as the training and validation loss continue to drop to an over-equalized state in which the quasi-hard output sequence loses the symbol-wise soft information of the signal and fails to obtain the BER performance gain from MLSE. In this work, we investigate the cascaded NNE and MLSE equalization scheme to deal with linear and nonlinear impairments. To solve the over-equalized problem, we propose a modified loss function (MLF) assisting NNE to achieve soft-out without entering into the over-equalized state. With the soft output after NNE, joint linear and nonlinear equalization can be realized by cascading the NNE with MLSE. Both numerical simulations and experimental demonstrations confirm the improved performance of our proposed method. With joint linear and nonlinear equalization, improved back-to-back (BtB) and fiber transmission performances of the 220-Gbps PAM-4 signal are demonstrated.

Abstract:Intra-channel nonlinear effects impose a major limitation to system performance in high speed optical transmission.These effects,which are usually referred to intra-channel four-wave mixing(IFWM) and cross-phase modulation(IXPM),may cause amplitude and timing jitter and lead to serious transmission penalties.The paper discussed causes and several factors of intra-channel pulse interaction.Analysis and numerical simulation derive conclusions as follows:To suppress intra-channel nonlinear effects,phase modulation is superior to amplitude modulation,and post-compensation of dispersion is superior to pre-compensation,especially for large launched power.In addition,the duty cycle of pulse has an optimum value for a certain launched power.

Abstract:In digital signal processing (DSP) based coherent optical communication systems, the effect of equalization enhanced phase noise (EEPN) will seriously degrade the transmission performance of high-capacity optical transmission system. In this paper, we have investigated the influence of EEPN on 9-channel 32-Gbaud dual-polarization 64-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (DP-64QAM) Nyquist-spaced superchannel optical field trial by using electronic dispersion compensation (EDC) and multi-channel digital backpropagation (MC-DBP). The deteriorations caused by EEPN on the signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR) and achievable information rates (AIRs) in high-speed optical communication systems have been studied. The system performance versus back-propagated bandwidth under different laser linewidth have also been demonstrated. The SNR penalty due to the distortion of EEPN achieves similar to 5.11 dB when FF-DBP is implemented, which informs that FF-DBP is more susceptible to EEPN, especially when the LO laser linewidth is larger. The system AIR versus different transmission distance under different EEPN interference using EDC-only and MC-DBP have also been evaluated, which show that there is a trade-off on the selection of lasers and back-propagated bandwidths to achieve a target AIR.
Equalization with Neural Network Circuitry for High-Speed Signal Link

Abstract:Traditional data link relies on an open eye diagram to ensure correct data transfer. There are many factors, including jitter, noise, crosstalk, channel bandwidth/filtering, etc. that can shrink the eye diagram. Equalization (EQ) including the finite impulse response (FIR) EQ, continuous time linear EQ (CTLE), and decision feedback EQ (DFE) are used to improve the eye diagram. However, when the aforementioned factors are so severe that the eye is closed, data transfer will fail. We propose a new approach that does not depend on an open eye diagram. The neural network (NN) circuitry, which we call an NN interpreter, is used to replace the EQ mechanism. This new solution can ensure correct data transfer even when the eye diagram is closed with the traditional EQ mechanism. The NN interpreter takes the voltage (or current) waveform in length of several unit intervals (UIs) and make the decision of 0 or 1 based on the entire waveform instead of just comparing the voltage in the cursor UI with the reference voltage. Simulation results with a DDR5 channel show over 30% improvement in data rate with the proposed method, that is, the data rate of 6 GT/s with traditional equalization method is improved to 8 GT/s with the NN approach.

Abstract:Stochastic nonlinear impairment is the primary factor that limits the transmission performance of high-speed orbital angular momentum (OAM) mode-division multiplexing (MDM) optical fiber communication systems. This Letter presents a low-complexity adaptive-network-based fuzzy inference system (LANFIS) nonlinear equalizer for OAM-MDM intensity-modulation direct-detection (IM/DD) transmission with three OAM modes and 15 wavelength division multiplex (WDM) channels. The LANFIS equalizer could adjust the probability distribution functions (PDFs) of the distorted pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) symbols to fit the statistical characteristics of the WDM-OAM-MDM transmission channel. Therefore, although the transmission symbols in the WDM-OAM-MDM system are subjected to a stochastic nonlinear impairment, the proposed LANFIS equalizer can effectively compensate the distorted signals. The proposed equalizer outperforms the Volterra equalizer with improvements in receiver sensitivity of 2, 1.5, and 1.3 dB for three OAM modes at a wavelength of 1550.12 nm, respectively. It also outperforms a CNN equalizer, with improvements in receiver sensitivity of 1, 0.5, and 0.3 dB, respectively. Moreover, complexity reductions of 67%, 74%, and 99.9% are achieved for the LANFIS equalizer compared with the Volterra, CNN, and ANFIS equalizers, respectively. The proposed equalizer has high performance and low complexity, making it a promising candidate for a high-speed WDM-OAM-MDM system.

Abstract:Nonlinear distortions in passive optical network (PON) systems degrade signal transmission performance. Joint linear and nonlinear pre-equalizers based on the Volterra series, memory polynomials and artificial neural networks (ANNs) are utilized to mitigate linear and nonlinear impairments. Centralized pre-equalization at the transmitter side of the optical line terminal (OLT) keeps the receiver side digital signal processing (DSP) at the optical network unit (ONU) simple. In this study, performance assessments of these three different pre-equalization schemes in intensity modulation and direct detection (IM/DD)-based 25-GBaud PON systems were evaluated. The joint linear and nonlinear pre-equalization schemes were based on the weight coefficients and the model obtained by channel estimation on the receiver side. We studied and compared the performance of three pre-equalization methods under various implementation conditions, such as received optical power (ROP), number of equalizer taps, and semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) current. Besides, we studied the equalization performance under different modulation orders, which were applied for data rate optimization to support different power budgets, being the potential solutions for future PON systems with various fiber-reach and split-ratio distributions. As a proof-of-concept, the equalization performance of the 25-Gbaud signals modulated with non-return-to-zero (NRZ), four-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM-4) and PAM-8 formats, corresponding to 25-, 50-, and 75-Gbps data rates, respectively, were tested. Both numerical simulations and experimental demonstrations were conducted to assess the performance of different pre-equalization schemes. With ANN pre-equalization, more than 4dB improvement in power budget was achieved for 25-GBaud PAM4 and PAM8 signals after 20 km fiber transmission. ANN-based pre-equalizer performed better than ANN-based post-equalizer even when the received signals were in low SNR. The power budgets of the 25-Gbaud NRZ, PAM4 and PAM8 signals after 20 km fiber transmission were 36.2 dB, 29.5 dB and 18 dB, respectively.
