Abstract:For direct sequence spread spectrum (DSSS) receivers, the capability of rejecting narrow-band interference can be significantly improved by a process of frequency-domain interference suppression (FDIS). The key issue of this process is how to determine a threshold to eliminate interference in the frequency domain, which has been extensively studied. However, these previous methods are tedious or very complex. A simple and efficient algorithm based on medians is proposed. The elimination threshold is only related to the median by a scale factor, which can be obtained by the numerical analysis. Simulation results show that the algorithm provides excellent narrow-band interference suppression while only slightly degrading the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). A one-pass algorithm using logarithmic segmentation is further derived to estimate medians with low computational complexity. Finally, the FDIS is implemented in a field programmable gate array (FPGA) of Xilinx. Experiments are carried out by connecting the FDIS FPGA to a DSSS receiver, and the results show that the receiver has an effective countermeasure for a 60 dB interference-to-signal ratio (ISR).

Abstract:A new type equalizer for HDTV transmission system based on VSB technology to cope with severely distorted channel situation is proposed. The ordinary equalizer, decision feedback (DFE) structure and recursive equalizing algorithm is used. Because of the multipath spreading in FIR, the ordinary DFE has a slow convergence of the weight coefficient in the former condition, and the recursive algorithm cannot work with the signal submerged in interference. The new equalizer adopts indirect equalizing style and new algorithm is used for fast estimation of the channel impulse responses used as initial weight coefficients of the adaptive equalizer. A modified DFE structure of decision feedback equalizer is proposed to get faster convergence of weight coefficients. The simulation results show that the new style equalizer can work well in severely distorted propagation channel while the ordinary equalizer cannot, and it was tested in Brazil.

Abstract:In order to address the high-power consummation issue of conventional multi-input and multi-output (MIMO) adaptive equalizer (AEQ) for short-reach coherent transmissions, several state-of-the-art low-complexity AEQs have been proposed. In our work, optimized adaptation algorithms for low-complexity real-valued (RV) AEQs with different structures are analyzed. Moreover, an approach to avoid introducing additional computational complexity due to the optimized adaptation process is presented here. The advantages of proposed optimized adaptation algorithms are experimentally demonstrated in a 25 Gbaud dual-polarization 16-quadrature-amplitude-modulation (DP-16QAM) back-to-back (BtB) intradyne system with an overall bandwidth of 14 GHz. Experimental results show that a similar performance as the conventional AEQ could be achieved by using proposed adaptation algorithms and reducing the number of multiplications with up to ∼65%.

Abstract:Distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) using submarine optical cables is a new marine technology for large-scale underwater data transmission and data collection of autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs). However, the shallow water surroundings and the mobility of AUVs cause severe multipath propagation and Doppler effect, resulting in sound signal distortion in the delay and Doppler domains when sound waves reach the submarine optical cable. In this paper, we propose an underwater acoustic equalization method based on channel shortening to mitigate these issues. We use frequency-domain decision feedback equalization (FD-DFE) for channel shortening to suppress multipaths and lower the Doppler spread of the channel, followed by time-domain decision feedback equalization based on recursive least square (RLS-DFE) to eliminate residual delay and Doppler spreads. This dual decision feedback equalization (DDFE) approach combines block- and symbol-wise equalization and demonstrates robustness through numerical simulations. In the reservoir experiment, the DDFE method increased the output signal-to-noise ratio by an average 4.5 dB compared to the traditional method for medium-rate communications at 3 kbps, and reduced the bit error rate by 60%.

Abstract:By introducing the Fermat number transform into chromatic dispersion compensation and adaptive equalization, the computational complexity has been reduced by 68% compared with the con?ventional implementation. Experimental results validate its transmission performance with only 0.8 dB receiver sensitivity penalty in a 75 km-40 GBaud-PDM-16QAM system.

Abstract:In cooperative communication systems, frequency synchronization and channel estimation are two important issues required to be addressed in practice. Due to the nature of cooperative communications, multiple frequency offsets may occur and the traditional frequency offset compensations may not apply. To solve this problem, equalization for the time-varying channel has been used in this paper. An efficient joint iterative decode and equalization method was proposed for distributed multiple input multiple output systems, in which different transmitters transmit different low-density parity check code (LDPC) coded signals to the base station. After getting initial estimation values of carrier frequency offsets and channels by the maximum likelihood method, a minimum mean square error equalizer provides the soft symbol information for the LDPC decoder and the decoded information guides the equalizer inversely. By using the iterative process, the demodulation could be realized. Simulation results indicate that the proposed algorithm can be used to obtain a good demodulation performance compared with the existing algorithms.

Abstract:Fiber optics is one of the highest bandwidth communication channel types in the current communication industry. The paper is to analyze a typical optical channel and perform channel equalization using an adaptive modified DFE with Activity Detection Guidance and Tap Decoupling algorithm. Evaluation can be made on the employment of the DFE algorithm and with enhancements, like Fractionally-Spaced equalization and Activity Detection Guidance, to improve its stability, steady-state error performance and convergence rate. The successful implementation of the Adaptive FS-DFE with ADG and TD technique offers an excellent alternative to linear equalization, which is known to be of little benefit for optical channels because of exorbitant noise enhancement. The FSE technique, when combined with the DFE, would offer improved effectiveness to amplitude distortion. As the impulse response of a typical optical link would have regions that are essentially zero, the employment of the activity detection scheme with Tap Decoupling would further enhance the steady-state error performance and convergence rate.

Abstract:A fast and low-complexity adaptive chromatic dispersion (CD) compensation algorithm based on delay-tap sampling technique for optical coherent systems is proposed. By generating a delay-tap plot from the signal powers after an adaptive CD equalizer, a parameter can be extracted from the delay-tap plot which can be used to estimate CD accurately. Simulation results for coherent polarization-division-multiplexed (PDM) quaternary phase-shift keying (QPSK) as well as 16-quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) systems with various pulse shapes demonstrate that high CD estimation accuracies using relatively few data symbols can be achieved in presence of other transmission impairments.
A New Parallel Algorithm for Fractionally Spaced Equalization

Abstract:Due to some drawbacks, such as the instability of the analog receiver in wideband conditions, an all-digital parallel receiver (APRX) has become more and more attractive. Based on the structure of an APRX proposed by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (Gray, A. et al., JPL TDA Progress Report 42-131, NASA Code 314-30-11-20-06, 1997), a novel parallel algorithm for fractionally spaced equalization (PFSE) is proposed. Utilizing the constant modulus algorithm (CMA), PFSE takes best advantage of its data overlapping characteristic and achieves perfect combination with the APRX's structure. Simulation results show that the performance of PFSE obviously predominates that of the T-spaced equalizer, with hardly any loss of performance compared with the corresponding serial FSE.

Abstract:An adaptive chromatic dispersion (CD) compensation algorithm based on Lee's timing error detector (TED) is proposed for coherent communication systems. By combining both the in-phase and quadrature component of the timing phase estimate parameter that is in Lee's TED, a CD estimation parameter insensitive to other transmission impairments can be generated. The proposed estimation method requires many fewer symbols compared with other methods based on blind linear CD search. In addition, the proposed technique is largely based on feed-forward timing phase recovery and requires very few additional resources from the hardware implementation point of view. Simulation results for polarization-division multiplexed quaternary phaseshift keying as well as 16-quadrature amplitude modulation systems using non-return-to-zero and Nyquist pulse in the presence of various channel distortions show that high CD estimation accuracies can be achieved.

Abstract:Chromatic dispersion (CD) equalization is one of the core tasks of the digital signal processing (DSP) chain in modern optical coherent receivers. A conventional impulse-invariant method for designing the CD equalization filter is revisited, improved by proper weighting, and reinterpreted as a Fourier series. To improve upon a direct evaluation of the passband least-squares (LS) approximation, we propose to design a CD equalization finite impulse response (FIR) filter based on a discrete LS approximation. The proposed method avoids numerical evaluation of nontrivial functions and relies only on Fourier transform. Its flexibility is corroborated by a filter design demonstration of joint matched filtering and CD equalization.

Abstract:In this paper, a reduced complexity adaptive decision feedback equalization scheme based on affine projection algorithm (APA) is proposed for multiple antenna systems under time-varying flat fading environment. Computational complexities of least mean-squares (LMS-DFE), recursive least squares (RLS-DFE) and APA-based adaptive equalization (AP-DFE) algorithm are compared. The proposed algorithm provides fast convergence speed and low computational complexity. Simulation results show that the AP-DFE adaptive equalization algorithm outperforms LMS-DFE algorithm and can obtain significant computation saving over RLS-DFE algorithm with approximately the same BER performance.

Abstract:This paper presents frequency-domain equalization (FDE) using iterative channel estimation for high-speed transmission with cyclic-prefix multicarrier direct sequence spread spectrum CDMA (MC-DS-CDMA). Cyclic-prefix DS-CDMA simplifies many issues arising in receiver due to the high-speed transmission, such as delay-spread of the channel. It also reduces the complexity of the equalizer and enables the equalization in frequency domain. With pilot-aided channel estimation and OFDM-style cyclic prefixes, a frequency-domain MMSE equalizer achieves the suppression of multipath interference. Yet the accuracy of channel estimation restricts the performance of the equalizer. In order to acquire more accurate channel estimation, an iterative algorithm is presented in this paper. Simulation results show, with the employment of this algorithm, the performance of the frequency-domain equalizer has a significant improvement. Compared to the original RAKE receiver with severe interference, after 5 iterations, the SNR of despread signals is enhanced by about 13 dB. This higher SNR can satisfy the requirement of demodulator and decoder, and support the full usage of Walsh codes and high order modulation as well.

Abstract:In this paper, we present an efficient single carrier frequency domain equalization for Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) digital television receiver. The proposed scheme employs iterative cyclic prefix reconstruction (CPR) combined with block-overlapping process to reduce inter-carrier interference (ICI) component caused by the absence of cyclic prefix in multipath fading channel. In addition, trellis decoder aided iterative decision feedback frequency domain equalizer is derived to further mitigate inter-symbol interference (ISI). Finally, low-complex iterative frequency domain channel estimation is proposed to predict and track the time-varying multipath fading channel coefficients. The computer simulation results reveal that the proposed scheme has a significant performance improvement in multipath fading channel with respect to the previous time domain equalization (TDE) and frequency domain equalization (FDE).

Abstract:A digital subcarrier multiplexing (DSCM) system has been proposed as a possible solution for large capacity and long-distance coherent optical transmissions due to its high tolerances for chromatic dispersion (CD), equalization-enhanced phase noise (EEPN) and fiber nonlinearity. In a DSCM receiver, for subcarrier-demultiplex to occur properly, frequency offset estimation (FOE) must be implemented before demultiplexing. It is beneficial to decrease complexity and EEPN by compensating CD on each subcarrier. Therefore, a high CD tolerance is indispensable for the FOE algorithm in a DSCM receiver. However, the mainstream blind FOE algorithms for single-carrier systems, such as the 4th power fast Fourier transform algorithm, could not work for DSCM systems. To deal with this challenge, a pilot tone-based FOE algorithm with high CD tolerance is proposed and verified using simulations and offline experiments. The final estimation accuracy of about 10 MHz of the proposed two-stage FOE is achieved at low computational complexity. Simulations and offline experiments show that DSCM systems with the proposed algorithm have a 0.5~1 dB Q-factor improvement over Nyquist single-carrier systems.

Abstract:The performance of long-haul coherent optical fiber transmission system is significantly affected by the equalization enhanced phase noise (EEPN), due to the interaction between the electronic dispersion compensation (EDC) and the laser phase noise. In this paper, we present a comprehensive study on different chromatic dispersion (CD) compensation and carrier phase recovery (CPR) approaches, in the n-level phase shift keying (n-PSK) and the n-level quadrature amplitude modulation (n-QAM) coherent optical transmission systems, considering the impacts of EEPN. Four CD compensation methods are considered: the time-domain equalization (TDE), the frequency-domain equalization (FDE), the least mean square (LMS) adaptive equalization are applied for EDC, and the dispersion compensating fiber (DCF) is employed for optical dispersion compensation (ODC). Meanwhile, three carrier phase recovery methods are also involved: a one-tap normalized least mean square (NLMS) algorithm, a block-wise average (BWA) algorithm, and a Viterbi-Viterbi (VV) algorithm. Numerical simulations have been carried out in a 28-Gbaud dual-polarization quadrature phase shift keying (DP-QPSK) coherent transmission system, and the results indicate that the origin of EEPN depends on the choice of chromatic dispersion compensation methods, and the effects of EEPN also behave moderately different in accordance to different carrier phase recovery scenarios.

Abstract:We theoretically and experimentally investigate a time-domain digital pre-equalization (DPEQ) scheme for bandwidth-limited optical coherent communication systems, which is based on feedback of channel characteristics from the receiver-side blind and adaptive equalizers, such as least-mean-squares (LMS) algorithm and constant or multi-modulus algorithms (CMA, MMA). Based on the proposed DPEQ scheme, we theoretically and experimentally study its performance in terms of various channel conditions as well as resolutions for channel estimation, such as filtering bandwidth, taps length, and OSNR. Using a high speed 64-GSa/s DAC in cooperation with the proposed DPEQ technique, we successfully synthesized band-limited 40-Gbaud signals in modulation formats of polarization-diversion multiplexed (PDM) quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK), 8-quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) and 16-QAM, and significant improvement in both back-to-back and transmission BER performances are also demonstrated. Abstract:Layered space-time architecture can achieve high channel capacity by deploying multiple transmit and receive antennas, but the existence of inter-symbol interference (ISI) and co-channel interference (CCI) limits its performance over frequency selective fading channels. In this paper, a new adaptive equalization with interference cancellation method based on affine projection algorithm (APA) is developed. The proposed algorithm performs interference cancellation in the process of detection without channel identification. Simulation results demonstrate the promising performance of the proposed method.
