Abstract:The paper proposes a small modulation and high precision laser range finder using the self-mixing effect in a single-mode vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL). According to the characteristic curve of single-mode VCSEL, the nonlinear distortion of Delta lambda/Delta I is severe and related with the modulation current Delta I, which worsens the system ranging accuracy obviously. In this paper, by applying small current to modulate single-mode VCSEL and specific circuits to process photoelectric signal, the system ranging accuracy is improved obviously. The experiment results show that, using small modulation current Delta I = 0.28 mA(p-p), modulation frequency f(m) = 500 Hz to modulate single-mode VCSEL, and applying difference frequency analog phase-locked loop (APLL) to process the self-mixing beat frequency signals that exist phase abrupt changes, when the sampling time is 0.1 s, the measurement dynamic range is as large as 50 similar to 500 mm, and the ranging accuracy is better than 2 mm.

Abstract:Laser range finding system using the self-mixing effect in a single-mode Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Laser (VCSEL) has many advantages, such as high precision, low power consumption and simple configuration. We used triangular wave current to modulate the single-mode VCSEL to produce high optical frequency excursion, and used difference frequency Analog Phase-locked Loop (APLL) technique to process the self-mixing beat frequency signal. The influences on ranging precision of phase abrupt changes and asymmetry periods of beat signal and anomaly waveforms have been reduced obviously, and the ranging precision and the measurement dynamic range have been improved evidently. The experimental results show that, in the room temperature, the measurement dynamic range is as large as 50 ~ 500mm, the ranging precision is 2mm and the resolution is better than 2mm, when the laser’s output power is 0.7mW, wavelength is 850nm, the triangular wave frequency is 1.3kHz and amplitude is 0.4Vrms, the sampling time is 0.1s and the scattered target is coarse metal plate.

Abstract:In order to solve the problems of low localization rate and poor stability of laser ranging system, a system based on the TDC-GP22 timing unit and the pulsed laser ranging method in the time-of-flight (TOF) method is designed to realize laser ranging. The domestic AL0905P75WT18-03FW laser diode and power MOS tube are used as the laser transmitter module to realize the high stability of laser emission, and the domestic AA-S0905 L0500 LCC3-2-B avalanche diode is used as the laser detector to convert the optical signal into current signal, which is further processed by amplification, filtering and so on and then passed through the TDC-GP22 to realize the laser distance measurement. After further processing, the light signal is converted into current signal through amplification, filtering and other further processing, through TDC-GP22 timing, thus realizing laser distance measurement. The system adopts domestic light source and photodetector, domestic voltage regulator chip, operational amplifier and FPGA chip, which improves the reliability, stability and autonomy of the system.

Abstract:>An optimized design of laser range finding system using the self-mixing effect in a single-mode vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) is proposed. In order to improve the ranging accuracy and expand dynamic measurement range, we apply difference frequency analog phase-locked loop (PLL) instead of fast Fourier transform (FFT) to process signal, and choose the optimum triangular wave frequency fm = 500 Hz and small modulation current △Ip-p = 0.28 mA to modulate single-mode VCSEL. The experiment results show that, without controlling the laser’s temperature, the ranging accuracy is better than 2 mm and the measurement dynamic range is as large as 50-500 mm when the sampling time is 0,1 s and the room temperature is 0-55℃.

Abstract:The Doppler velocity sensor system based on laser self-mixing effect applies single-longitudinal-mode vertical-cavity surface-emitted laser (VCSEL),simplifying the optical path.And it uses difference frequency analogy phase locked loop (APLL) to process the self-mixing Doppler signal,so both the velocity measurement accuracy and dynamic range can be improved obviously.And it uses microcontroller unit (MCU) to make digital sampling and measure the Doppler signal frequency to obtain the velocity of the target,realizing the integration and miniaturization of velocity sensor systems.The experimental results show that,with the sampling time of 0.Is,the velocity measurement accuracy is better than 1%，and the dynamic range is from 30mm/s to 500 mm/s.The Doppler velocity sensor system has advantages of non-touch measurement,high accuracy of velocity measurement,wide dynamic range,simple configuration,low cost,and convenience in integration,so it has wide applications in such fields as bioengineering measurement.

Abstract:The self-mixing laser Doppler velocitimeter(LDV)system using single mode vertical cavity emitting laser(VCSEL)has better temperature characteristics and wider external cavity length(the optical path length from the laser front mirror to target plate)range compared with the system using multi-mode laser diode.Difference frequency analog phase locked loop(PLL)for small signal processing was used and it obviously improved the velocity measurement accuracy.Triangular wave modulation according to which frequency is divided by the Doppler frequency f_d for direction discrimination was used and it improved its accuracy and dynamic range.The experimental results are as follows:when external length is 30±3 mm, temperature range is 0℃～55℃(no temperature controller for VCSEL),sampling time is 0.1 s,the velocity measurement resolution is better than 0.2% and when velocity measurement range is 30～480 mm/s,the accuracy is better than 0.1% and when the measurement range is 5～480 mm/s,the accuracy is better than 2%.When the supply voltage is 5 V,the forward direction indicating level is higher than 4.9 V and the backward level is lower than 0.1 V.

Abstract:A self-mixing laster Doppler velocimetry(LDV) with a new single mode vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser(VCSEL) is proposed.The results show that the accuracy of velocity measurement is related to laser mode,Doppler signal spectrum width,dynamic range of the length between the laser front mirror to surface(the external cavity length),and dynamic range of velocity.The single mode laser and analog beat-frequency phase-locked loop(PLL) technique were used in the self-mixing LDV,and the accuracy of velocity measurement improved noticeably. With the external cavity length being 30 mm±1 mm,the velocity range between 30 mm/s and 480 mm/s and sampling time 0.1 s,the accuracy of velocity measurement is better than 1%,and repeatable accuracy is better than 0.2%.The self-mixing LDV has many characteristics,such as high accuracy of velocity measurement,wide dynamic range and low cost,etc.

Abstract:In this paper,according to the principle of distance measuring using triangulation,a suit of distance measuring using single-point laser triangulation system based on CMOS is designed through the technique of MCU.The hardware of the system and the structure of the software are described in detail,due to the non-linear characteristic of the used light-sensitive transducer′s calibration curve,the method of using piecewise linear line to approximate calibration curve is given,at last,the results of the experiment are introduced and it is analyzed the relation between every parameter and experimental precision.The results of the experiment prove the feasibility of the idea,the measurement error of this method is less than 3%.

Abstract:We propose an opto-electronic THz vector imaging system based on a self-mixing detection receiver, which can be used to measure thickness of samples. In the proposed system architecture, a THz signal is generated by microwave photonics technology and received by a Schottky barrier diode detector. In the THz free space transmission link, four parabolic mirrors are used to collimate the THz signals, and the sample under test is placed at the focal point of a parabolic mirror. At the receiver side, the transmission signal is down-converted by Schottky barrier diode detector, and the phase information is acquired by a lock-in amplifier, which is used for sample imaging and thickness detection. In the experiment demonstration, a Mach-Zehnder modulator with carrier-suppression is used to generate a two-tone optical signal, and coupled with an external cavity laser for photomixing generation of a two-tone THz signal in the 300GHz frequency band at an uni-traveling carrier photodiode. Several samples with different thicknesses are imaged and compared in the experiment, and the measured thickness error is estimated to be about 3.84%.
Intelligent Measuring System for Performance Parameters of Laser Range Finder

Abstract:In order to measure the performance parameters of laser range finders, a new intelligent measuring system is developed, which introduces advanced control technologies, very quick and convenient WIN32 computer software and a skillfully designed beam splitter system. It can synchronously measure optical axis consistency, width and energy of the pulse, beam divergence angle, and so on. A 1296×1030 CCD is adopted in order to ensure 10″ of spatial resolving ability; A 350MHz oscilloscope is used to catch the laser pulse as narrow as 10ns; A laser power meter which has high accuracy and large dynamic scope is used to obtain accurate energy measurement of the laser pulse. The system has been checked and accepted, and all the performance parameters meet the design demands. Now it is used by user and operates very well.

Abstract:The pulsed laser ranging measurement is an advanced and universal test method.This paper introduces the design and implementation of embedded signal processing system based on pulse laser ranging technology.It mainly discusses the design of the circuit based on the variable gain amplifier and the high speed A/D converter.The hardware and the software of the signal processing system are also presented.It realizes a high accuracy time interval measurement.Here develop an embedded measuring instrument based on the pulsed laser ranging design,as well as good performances and high precision laser range finding.The design is especially suit for volume-produce and low-cost requirements.

Abstract:The self-mixing interference based on a Vertical-cavity Surface-Emitting Laser(VCSEL) was investigated.By taking a VCSEL as the source of a self-mixing interferometric system,the effect of different types of scattering surfaces and injection currents on the self-mixing signals was analyzed.It is concluded that the black and glossy photographic paper target will bring unfavorable influence on the self-mixing velocimeter and the operating currents with 1-1.4 times of the threshold currents can offer a self-mixing signal with a stable and great amplitude.For the longer preheating time,the power-up time of self-mixing velocimeter was discussed,and the results show that Doppler frequency will be stable and accurate after 17 s.The obtained results provide instructions for the parameter optimization and the choice of light source of a self-mixing velocimeter using the VCSEL.

Abstract:The laser interferometry based on self-mixing effect is well-established technique,and widely used to measure displacement,velocity,vibration and distance due to its ompactness,robustness,as well as low cost.We experimentally investigated the self-mixing interference produced by the feedback of light from a vibrated target into vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers(VCSELs) for sensing applications,and a theoretical analysis by rate equation was proposed.In this paper,the self-mixing vibrometer employing driven signals with different frequencies(1 kHz,2 kHz) and amplitudes(880 mV,1.66 V) was also discussed.Results indicate that the wave number of self-mixing signal with 2 kHz driven signal is two times of that with 1 kHz driven signal during one period,while the wave number of self-mixing signal with 880 mV driven signal is half of that with 1.66 V driven signal during one period,so frequency and amplitude of the driven signal can be obtained by self-mixing signal measurement.

Abstract:The experiments show that the single-mode vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) Laser Doppler Velocimetry (LDV) is better than the multilongitudinal-mode laser diode LDV in many characteristics, such as the accuracy of velocity measurement and the temperature range of the laser. Because the output power of the single-mode VCSEL is very low and only 0.7mW, the backscattered light received by the photodiode in the laser house is so weak that the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of Doppler signal is low. And the Doppler signal spectrum width spread and amplitude modulation envelope badly influence the velocity measurement accuracy. Analog phase-locked loop (PLL) has many characteristics, such as narrow band tracking filter, locking the signal with peak voltage and high rejection ratio of amplitude modulation. Using the analog PLL, the SNR of Doppler signal and the velocity measurement accuracy can be improved obviously. But because the locking range of the common analog PLL is narrow, we use difference frequency analog PLL to expand the locking range, and the dynamic range of velocity measurement can be greatly expanded. As a result, the velocity measurement accuracy of the single-mode VCSEL self-mixing LDV is better than 1% when the velocity range is from 30mm/s to 480mm/s.

Abstract:Laser interferometry based on self-mixing effect is widely used to measure displacement,velocity, vibration and distance due to compactness,robustness,as well as low cost.Self-mixing interference produced by the feedback of light from a moved target into an edge emitting laser(EEL) was experimentally investigated for sensing applications.The self-mixing velocimeter with different types of surface,values of sample time and injection current,signal process system are also discussed.The results indicate that high precision requirement can be reached with different types of surface,values of sample time 0.1 s,1 s. Experimental results of the self-mixing velocity measurement system show that selecting proper injection current(above 1.1 times of threshold current) of EEL and null control technique can enhance signal to noise ratio(SNR) of self-mixing signal.This conclusion can help to improve the mechanism of self-mixing and optimize the self-mixing vibration measurement system.

Abstract:SM-LDV (Self-Mixing Type Laser Doppler Velocimeter) using single mode VCSEL (Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers) has many characteristic such as high accuracy of velocity measurement, low power dissipation and low cost. The saw-tooth waveform of Doppler signal can be used to discriminate the motion direction. Because of low light power of single mode VCSEL, the backscattered light is so weak that the saw-tooth waveform is not good enough to discriminate the motion direction. SM-LDV direction discrimination using single mode VCSEL modulated by triangular wave is not obviously dependent on the light power of Laser and its reliability is better. The dynamic range is very narrow when the VCSEL is modulated by constant frequency triangular wave. We present a method that VCSEL is modulated by triangular wave whose frequency is tracking the divided frequency of Doppler frequency shift (f(D)) and it can expand the dynamic range more than one order of magnitude. The results show that the dynamic range of direction discrimination can reach 5-500mm/s when the wavelength of single mode VCSEL is 850nm and the operating current is 8.6mA, the frequency of triangular wave is f(D)/16, the modulation current of triangular wave is 0.042mA.
Self-Mixing Laser Distance-Sensor Enhanced by Multiple Modulation Waveforms

Abstract:Optical rangefinders based on Self-Mixing Interferometry are widely described in literature, but not yet on the market as commercial instruments. The main reason is that it is relatively easy to propose new elaboration techniques and get results in controlled conditions, while it is very difficult to develop a reliable instrument. In this paper, we propose a laser distance sensor with improved reliability, realized through a wavelength modulation at a different frequency, able to decorrelate single measurement errors and obtain improvement by averages. A dedicated software is implemented to automatically calculate the modulation pre-emphasis, needed to linearize the wavelength modulation. Finally, data selection algorithms allow to overcome signal fading problems due to the speckle effect. A prototype demonstrates the approach with about 0.1 mm accuracy up to 2 m of distance at 200 measurements per second.

Abstract:The laser ranging system based on time correlation single photon counting technology and single photon detector has the feature of high precision and low emergent energy etc. In this paper, we established a single photon laser ranging system that use the supercontinuum laser as light source, and two wavelengths (532nm and 830nm) of echo signal as the stop signal. We propose a new method that is capable to improve the single photon ranging system performance. The method is implemented by using two single-photon detectors to receive respectively the two different wavelength signals at the same time. We extracted the firings of the two detectors triggered by the same laser pulse at the same time and then took mean time of the two firings as the combined detection time-of-flight. The detection by two channels using two wavelengths will effectively improve the detection precision and decrease the false alarm probability. Finally, an experimental single photon ranging system was established. Through a lot of experiments, we got the system precision using both single and two wavelengths and verified the effectiveness of the method.

Abstract:Flash LiDAR is a photoelectric system that can acquire a 3D image by emitting a diffuse pulsed laser beam, and hence is suitable for both autopilot and spacecraft flight control. Achieving long-range and high-speed, especially in outdoor applications with strong solar background illumination, are challenging requirements. In this paper, a set of laser imaging prototype based on 2×6 VCSEL array and 32×32 MPPC array image sensor is developed, the range calibration is completed, and relevant experimental research is carried out. The frame rate of the system can reach 10kHz, the detection probability of 120m range can reach 86.23%, and the maximum walk error is about 0.6m under different reflectivity. The 3D imaging of the vehicle can be realized at about 70m, the horizontal spatial resolution is less than 5cm, and the ranging precision after ten shots average is within 10cm by calculating the centroid of a histogram. The detection probability can be improved by using the time-gating method. After multiple measurements, a 120m "laser imaging through window" can be realized in sunlight. This LiDAR system has the advantages of small volume, light weight and fast detection speed.
