Abstract:Impregnated Y2O3 Doped Tungsten Matrix Scandate Cathode was prepared by impregnating Y2O3-W matrix with barium-aluminum-scandate. The zero current density J0 of the cathode at 900oCb has reached 14.63A/cm2 and secondary emission yield δ is 3.51 after being optimally activated, both higher than the emission performances of Ba-W dispenser cathode. Auger electron spectroscopy result indicates that Sc, Ba and O diffuses from the interior porous body to surface simultaneously to form a “Ba-Sc-O” active substance layer, which lowers the work function of the cathode, and the increase of Y2O3 content will contribute to the formation of n-type semiconductor, which enhances the electric conductivity of the cathode, thus the emission performance of the cathode has been improved.

Abstract:Eu2O3 and Sc2O3 co-doped W matrix impregnated cathodes have been prepared by the powder metallurgy method. The constitution of active elements on activated cathode surface is analyzed by in-situ Auger electron spectroscopy. It is found that although Eu exists in the matrix, no Eu is found on the cathode surface due to the formation of a stable Eu containing compound. Sc, Ba and O diffuse to the surface of the cathode and form an active surface layer during the activation period whereas the stable Eu-compound cannot liberate free Eu, which can diffuse from the cathode to the surface. The active substance of Sc, Ba and O on the cathode surface contribute to the emission property.

Abstract:Sc2O3–W matrix cathodes have been prepared by using a liquid–liquid doping method combined with high-temperature sintering. The microstructure and physical behavior of active substances of scandia-doped tungsten matrix and impregnated cathode has been studied by SEM and AES methods. The results show that the matrix has a homogeneous structure composed of W grains with spherical shape and superfine Sc2O3 particles dispersed uniformly over and among W grains. After impregnation, this Sc-type impregnated cathode has high emission capability. Space-charge-limited current density could reach 52A/cm2 at 850°Cb. The high emission results from a Ba–Sc–O active layer with a thickness of about 80nm, which is formed at the cathode surface during the activation period. Both the decrease of the thickness of active surface layer and the decrease of the content of Sc at the surface could lead to the degradation of current density during operation.

Abstract:Replacing the expensive Sc in thermionic cathode with cheaper Y has come to be a widespread concern, but has no substantial breakthrough so far in previous studies. In this paper, several co-doped tungsten matrix cathodes with different weight ratio of Y 2 O 3 :Sc 2 O 3 were prepared and tested. The results indicate that addition of Y can enhance the emission performance of cathodes in some specific component ratios of Y to Sc. However, the surface analysis indicates that the added Y are not working as adsorption Y to adjust the chemical potential of O and Ba on the surface of cathode like Scandium, but just promote the generation of Sc.

Abstract:A new Sc - type dispenser cathode with scandia doped tungsten matrix has been studied. The matrix is made of scandia doped tungsten powder obtained from scandia aqueous doping tungsten oxide. Microstructure and surface behavior of the matrix and the emission properties of the cathode with such a matrix have been investigated. Sc2O3 partly covered tungsten powders, which is considered to be beneficial for Sc - type cathode, were obtained by the doping method. The matrix shows homogeneous microstructure, uniform distribution of scandia and stable combination of Sc2O3 with W. The cathode with scandia doped tungsten matrix exhibits excellent emission characteristics and high resistance to ion bombardment compared with that of with mechanical mixing scandia and tungsten matrix.

Abstract:Herein, a series of 6BaO center dot 1CaO center dot 2Al(2)O(3) + x wt% Sc2O3 (x = 1, 3, 5, 7, 9) impregnants were synthesized by a liquid-phase co-precipitation method and subsequent sintering at 1200 degrees C. The as-synthesized emissive materials were impregnated into porous tungsten matrices at 1700 degrees C, and their phase composition and electron emission performance were investigated. The X-ray diffraction analysis of the sintered and melted impregnated products revealed that they comprised multi-phase structures consisting of (Ba,Ca)(3)Al2O6, Ba2ScAlO5, and BaAl2O4 phases. Furthermore, the addition of 3 wt% Sc2O3 to the impregnated test cathodes significantly increased the emission level of the test cathode to 11.4 +/- 0.6 A cm(-2) at 1100. CB (i.e., brightness temperature). The relationship between the electron emission properties and phase concentration in the impregnants was analyzed, and the results revealed that the emission performance of the cathodes deteriorated with an increase in the Sc2O3 content, which could be attributed to an increase in the concentration of non-active BaAl2O4 phase in the impregnants.

Abstract:In order to obtain cathodes with excellent electron emission and uniform emission properties,the Sc2O3 doped tungsten powders were prepared by sol-gel combined with two-step reduction method.By using this kind of powder,scandia doped tungsten mixed matrix impregnated cathodes were fabricated by a serial procedures of pressing,sintering and impregnating.The various analysis techniques,such as SEM,AES,and electron emission property measurement equipments were adopted to evaluate the microstructure,emission properties and the changes of active element on cathode surface during activation.The SEM micrographs show that Sc2O3 doped tungsten matrix has appropriate pore size,good pore structure,uniform pore distribution,and sub-micrometer-sized grains. 51 A·cm-2 of Jdiv.at 850 ℃b,nearly the highest thermoelectronic emission current density in the world,is obtained for this kind of impregnated cathode.It is the microstructure that is propitious to the diffusion of active element from interior to the surface,which accelerates the electron emission property of the cathode.

Abstract:Scandia doped tungsten matrix dispenser cathodes were manufactured using scandia doped tungsten powder prepared by mechanical mixing, liquid-solid doping and a spray drying method. It is found the macrostructure of the cathode depended on the powder preparation method. The cathode prepared using the powder prepared by spray drying method had a homogenous and porous matrix characterized with grains with a diameter of less than 1 pm and with many nanoparticles distributing uniformly around these grains. The cathode with submicron structure and uniform distribution of scandia exhibited good emission uniformity. The emission uniformity Delta J/J of the cathode prepared by spray drying method was 0.17, about 6 times lower than that of the cathode prepared by mechanical mixing method. The calculation results showed that the nanoparticles led to electric field enhancement. A Ba-Sc-O multilayer on the cathode surface and nanoparticles distributing mainly on W grains contributed to the emission property of the cathode. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Yttrium oxide was chosen as the secondary emission substance based on calculation results through first principle theory method. A new kind of pressed yttrium oxide-tungsten matrix dispenser cathodes are prepared by a sol gel method combined with high temperature sintering in dry hydrogen atmosphere. The results show that the growth of the grains is hampered by the pinning effect of Y2O3 distributing uniformly between the tungsten particles, resulting in the formation of small grain size. It is found that Y2O3 improves the secondary electron emission property, i.e., the secondary emission yield increases with the increase of Y2O3 content in the samples. The maximum secondary emission yield S. of the cathode with 15% amount of Y2O3 can reach 2.92. Furthermore, the cathode shows a certain thermionic emission performance. The zero field emission current density J(o) of 4.18A/cm(2) has reached at 1050 degrees C-b for this kind of cathode after being activated at 1200 degrees C-b, which are much higher than that of rare earth oxide doped molybdenum (REO-Mo) cathode reported in the previous work. Abstract:The thermionic emission properties of rare earth doped molybdenum cathode and impregnated cathode with sub-micron scandia doped tungsten matrix,and the secondary emission property of rare earth doped molybdenum cathode have been studied in this paper.It was shown that La_2O_3-Mo cathode had good thermionic emission property and the capability of anti-exposition to the atmosphere.The maximum secondary emission coefficient of the rare earth doped molybdenum cathodes activated at 1000～1200 ℃ could exceed 4.0.The impregnated cathodes with submicron scandia doped tungsten matrix exhibited excellent emission property.The current densities of more than 30 A/cm~2 at 850℃_b could be obtained,and the emission homogeneity was improved with the ordinary scandate cathode.

Abstract:Scandia and rhenium doped tungsten powders were prepared by solid–liquid doping combined with two-step reduction method. The experimental results show that scandia was distributed evenly on the surface of tungsten particles. The addition of scandia and rhenium could decrease the particle size of doped tungsten, for example, the tungsten powders doped with Sc2O3 and Re had the average size of about 50nm in diameter. By using this kind of powder, scandia and rhenium doped tungsten matrix with the sub-micrometer sized tungsten grains was obtained. This kind of matrix exhibited good anti-bombardment insensitivity at high temperature. The emission property result showed that high space charge limited current densities of more than 60A/cm2 at 900°C could be obtained for this cathode. A Ba–Sc–O multilayer about 100nm in thickness formed at the surface of cathode after activation led to the high emission property.

Abstract:In this study, the porous tungsten matrices of dispenser cathodes were prepared by a new method of three-dimensional selective laser melting, and the relationship between 3D printing process and porosity of matrix was studied. The emission performance of the cathodes impregnated with barium aluminates with and without addition of Scandia, have been measured. It was found that the emission property of the cathodes with machined and W-coated surface is similar to that of traditional B-type cathodes, and the addition of ${Sc}_{2}O_{3}$, in the impregnations improved the emission capability of cathode significantly.

Abstract:in order to obtain the emission performance of SC containing barium tungsten cathode heat,using liquid-solid doping,doped tungsten powder reduction,isostatic pressing,sintering temperature,impregnation emitting substance such as technology,preparation of tungsten matrix barium tungsten cathode.On the cathode emission performance test results show,in the cathode temperature were 950℃,1050 ℃,1100 ℃,pulse emission current density were 53.6 A/cm 2 、 65.7 A/cm 2 、 79 A/cm 2 The analysis thinks,as a result of scandium oxide is covered uniformly on the surface of tungsten particles,scandium oxide with tungsten contact surface increases,make the scandium oxide and tungsten binding force is increased,therefore the cathode has excellent uniformity of hot electron emission,high ion bombardment resistance ability.

Abstract:To study emission property and microstructure of Re doped cathode, the Sol-Gel combined with a two-step hydrogen reduction method was adopted to fabricate R5S5 (5%Sc2O3 +5%Re2O7) co-doped tungsten powder. The rare-earth doped matrix cathodes were prepared by the pressing, sintering, impregnating and ultra-sonic watering. Microstructure and emission property of cathodes were investigated by modern analysis techniques, such as SEM and UHV electron emission surveyor. The emission properties of R5S5 cathodes were excellent, i. e. , the current density Jdiv reaching 30. 14 A/cm2 at 850℃b . The local electric fields around the nanoparticles on the cathode surface increased, resulting in the improvement of emission property of the cathode.

Abstract:Different characteristic features of scandate-type cathode with sub-micron structure Sc2O3 doped tungsten bodies, were investigated. The scandia doped tungsten powders were made by using liquid-solid doping and liquid-liquid doping. The doped tungsten powders were pressed and sintered into porous bodies and then impregnated with 411 barium calcium aluminates. The result shows that improved pressing, sintering and impregnating procedures help to obtain scandate cathodes with sub-micron framework porous bodies.

Abstract:The cathode in the magnetron should have good secondary emission property and a certain thermionic property. In this article, ZrH2 was added as an activator to obtain rare earth-doped tungsten matrix impregnated cathode to improve the emission property. Cathodes with ZrH2 (Y15-411-Zr cathode) or without ZrH2 (Y15-411 cathode) were prepared by a spray drying method combined with high-temperature sintering in dry hydrogen atmosphere. The emission properties and emission mechanism have been studied. The results showed that thermionic emission performance and secondary emission performance of Y15-411-Zr cathode are 3.4 times and 1.2 times higher than those of Y15-411 cathode, respectively. With the addition of ZrH2, yttrium was produced during activating process, which contributed to the better emission properties of Y15-411-Zr cathode. Furthermore, the work function of barium and oxygen adsorbed on yttrium oxide and yttrium surface was calculated using the first principle. The results showed that the lowest work function of Ba-O absorbed on Y2O3 and Y is 1.9 and 1.6 eV, respectively.

Abstract:Uniform scandium doped tungsten powder was prepared by sol-gel method combined with reduction process, and then the scandium doped impregnated cathode was successfully prepared by microwave sintering. The characteristics of Sc-doped tungsten powder, the microstructure of cathode sponge matrix, the emission properties, and the surface behavior of the active substance were analyzed. The result shows that the scandium doped tungsten powder has the average size of around 1 mu m and Sc element is uniformly distributed. The morphology of the sponge skeleton is spherical, the pore distribution is uniform, the average pore diameter is about 0.46 mu m, and scandium is evenly distributed in the matrix. The cathode prepared by the microwave sintering method exhibits good emission properties, e.g., the current density of this cathode reaches 137.59 A/cm(2) at 950 degrees C-b, and the emission slope is 1.431. The atomic ratio of Ba:Sc:O on the cathode surface is 1.8:1:2.2 after activation, and a large amount of nanoparticles are present on the cathode surface, which promotes emission of the cathode.

Abstract:Nano-sized Scandia Doped Dispenser cathode made from Scandia doped tungsten powder has been paid worldwide attention due to its high emission and satisfactory emission uniformity. Among the adopted doping techniques the liquid-liquid doping by Sol-Gel process is the most favorable for the performance of this kind of cathode. A further searching on the details of the processes is necessary for cathode manufacturing. In this study, Sc2O3 contents of 1% wt., 3% wt., 5% wt. and 7% wt. (named Sc1, Sc3, Sc5 and Sc7) were added to the tungsten powder; their effects on microstructures and emission performance of the produced cathodes were investigated. The study proved that the nano-sized Sc2O3 particles are getting richer from Sc1 to Sc7 but cover on the W grains in all cases. While there is a slight decrease in porosities from Sc1 to Sc7, the filled impregnant of Ba Ca aluminates for Sc1 to Sc5 is satisfied the requirement for dispenser cathode, but is obviously lower for Sc7. All cathodes made from Sc3, Sc5 and Sc7 reach a Space Charge Limited current density of about 50A/cm(2) at true temperature of 960 degrees C except Sc1 of 33A/cm(2). The knee points at initial current density of 30A/cm(2) are 830 degrees C, 875 degrees C and 920 degrees C for Sc5, Sc3 and Sc7, respectively. Almost no knee can be observed for Sc1. Therefore, Sc5 and Sc3 exhibit the best emission and emission uniformity, Sc7 comes second and Sc1 goes the worst.

Abstract:Sc2O3-W matrix dispenser cathodes have been prepared by powder metallurgy method and tested in Pierce electron guns. The emission current density can reach 72 A/cm2 at 900°C and over 100 A/cm2 can be achieved at a temperature higher than 950°C. The emission improves and then keeps stable with time throughout the life testing period of 330 h at a continuous loading of 88 A/cm2 pulsed current density with a pulse width of 10 μs and duty cycle of 0.2%. The cathode surface is covered by a semiconductor multilayer composed of Ba, Sc and O. The emission behavior of the cathode can be explained by a semiconductor model.
