Abstract:Yttrium oxide was chosen as the secondary emission substance based on calculation results through first principle theory method. A new kind of pressed yttrium oxide-tungsten matrix dispenser cathodes are prepared by a sol gel method combined with high temperature sintering in dry hydrogen atmosphere. The results show that the growth of the grains is hampered by the pinning effect of Y2O3 distributing uniformly between the tungsten particles, resulting in the formation of small grain size. It is found that Y2O3 improves the secondary electron emission property, i.e., the secondary emission yield increases with the increase of Y2O3 content in the samples. The maximum secondary emission yield S. of the cathode with 15% amount of Y2O3 can reach 2.92. Furthermore, the cathode shows a certain thermionic emission performance. The zero field emission current density J(o) of 4.18A/cm(2) has reached at 1050 degrees C-b for this kind of cathode after being activated at 1200 degrees C-b, which are much higher than that of rare earth oxide doped molybdenum (REO-Mo) cathode reported in the previous work. The effect of Ir and Sc on the emission capacity of W–Ir matrix scandate cathodes prepared via a novel in situ method

Abstract:The size and distribution of Sc 2 O 3 in the composite powder precursor has great effect on the emission property of scandate cathode. By one-step in-situ synthesis method, the composite powder exhibits the structure of quasi-spherical Sc 2 O 3 nanoparticles grown in situ on the surface of W/Ir grains, and the obtained W–Ir cathode with 3wt % Sc 2 O 3 could provide the emission current density of 83.43 A/cm 2 at 900 °C b , which is higher than other W–Ir mixed matrix scandate cathodes and W matrix scandate cathode. The XRD results showed that the high emission ability depended on the high content of active phase α-Ba 2 ScAlO 5 and low content of non-active phase BaAl 2 O 4 . In-situ TEM has been applied to observe the microstructure evolution of the cathode surface at high temperature for the first time. A serial change in the microstructural features of cathode surface and the migration of Ba, Sc and O on the substrate surface has been found, confirming the formation of Ba-Sc-O active layer. The first-principles calculations indicate that the active substances (Sc) are more stable (low adsorption energy of − 8.58 eV) on the IrW matrix cathode surface than on the tungsten matrix cathode surface, which is consistent with the low evaporation rate of the active substance detected by TFMS technique. Besides, the interaction between the active substance and the matrix was strengthened due to more electron transfer of Sc (1.88 e) and Ba (1.45 e), therefore lowering the work function. The feasible preparation technique makes such a cathode promising for applications in high-power microwave devices.

Abstract:Scandate cathodes have received widespread attention due to the high emission current density, existing results have shown that the content of strontium in impregnant has a certain degree of impact on the emission property of scandate cathodes. In this work, the mechanism by how strontium affects the emission property was investigated through experiments and theoretical analysis. Five precursor powders with different strontium element contents were prepared by freeze-drying method, and the impregnant was obtained after sintering. Then composition analysis was conducted on the impregnant and prepared experimental cathodes for emission performance testing, also the surface emission structure of cathode was established for density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The experimental results indicated that the variation in strontium content can alter the material composition of the impregnant and have impact on cathode emission performance. During the process of increasing strontium content from 0 to 12 atom%, the emission performance of the experimental cathodes increased first and then decreased. Under a testing temperature of 1100 , the cathodes with 6 atom% Sr have the highest emission current density of 34.9 A/cm2 at 260 V dc and 523.2 A/cm2 at 2000 V pulse voltage among the five experimental cathodes, and this cathode exhibits good emission uniformity. DFT results indicate that strontium does not directly participate in reducing the work function of cathode surface. It can be considered that strontium has a promoting effect on the formation of active substance, an appropriate amount of strontium promotes the formation of emitting active substance Ba2ScAl5 during the preparation process of the impregnant, thus promoting the improvement of cathode emission performance; while excessive strontium can lead to the generation of impurities that lower the emission performance of cathodes.

Abstract:Metal coated dispenser cathode is of great interest due to its low operation temperature, high current density and long lifetime, however, the emission mechanism is still far from being fully understood. In this work, the tungsten dispenser cathodes were coated with iridium film of 300 nm in thickness. The phase transition and surface structure evolution during cathode activation was systematically investigated. The as-deposited iridium coating shows a columnar grain morphology with ultrafine size. Upon heating for 1 h at 1150 °C, a multiple-layer of Ir/Ir3W/IrW was detected and it fully converted to IrW layer after 4 h heat treatment. Such a structure evolution can be well explained based on thermodynamics. The Ir → Ir3W → IrW phase transition induces obvious film thickening and grain coarsening. The full activation could increase the emission current density from 17.35 A/cm2 to 30.92 A/cm2 at 1050 °C. Density function theory (DFT) simulation results demonstrate the enhanced emission of IrW-coated cathode may be due to its balanced adsorption behaviors with Ba and O atoms. Our findings will provide deeper insights into the design and development of metal coated cathodes with better performance.

Abstract:Field emission devices using a wet-processed composite cathode of carbon nanotube films coated with titanium dioxide exhibit outstanding field emission characteristics, including ultralow turn on field of 0.383V mu m(-1) and threshold field of 0.657V mu m(-1) corresponding with a very high field enhancement factor of 20 000, exceptional current stability, and excellent emission uniformity. The improved field emission properties are attributed to the enhanced edge effect simultaneously with the reduced screening effect, and the lowered work function of the composite cathode. In addition, the highly stable electron emission is found due to the presence of titanium dioxide nanoparticles on the carbon nanotubes, which prohibits the cathode from the influence of ions and free radical created in the emission process as well as residual oxygen gas in the device. The high-performance solution-processed composite cathode demonstrates great potential application in vacuum electronic devices. (C) 2015 AIP Publishing LLC.

Abstract:The Ir nano particle thin film was grown by dcrect current magnetron sputtering at room temperature. Microstructure of thin films grown at different sputtering pressures were measured by scanning electron microscopy. The results show that the particle size of the films depends on the deposition rate in the nucleation stage of Ir films and the deposition rate can be well controlled by sputtering pressure. A new kind of cathodes are fabricated from 25% porous tungsten impregnated with 6∶1∶2-type barium calcium aluminate and coated with the nano particulate Ir thin film. The coating processes produces a film thickness of 200—500 nm and the cathodes are fired in hydrogen atmosphere for ten minutes at 1200℃ to further improve the coating microstructure. The cathodes have been studied with thermal electron microscope by which the electron-optical picture of a thermal emission cathode could be obtained. Time of flight mass spectrometer （ToFMS） has been used in a study of evaporation from impregnated cathodes. The chemical composition of evaporation of various impregnated cathodes have been measured by ToFMS. The variation of ion current of evaporants from S-type cathode and M-type cathode （coated with iridium） and n-type cathode （coated with iridium nano-particle thin film） with temperature and time have been studied and discussed. Emission current characteristics have been measured as a function of voltage and temperature.

Abstract:Tungsten-based scandate dispenser cathodes are promising next-generation thermionic electron sources for vacuum electron devices, due to their excellent emission performance at temperatures lower than those required for conventional cathodes. There has been a significant recent effort to understand scandate cathode performance and to characterize the tungsten and other materials on the emitting surface, primarily via the study of cathodes before and after emission testing. Moreover, these scandate cathodes have typically been characterized at room temperature only. In situ observations of scandate cathodes is challenging, as these devices are thermionic emitters that operate in a high-vacuum environment, and because the sizes of relevant material features range from the micron (2.0 μm) to the nanometer (<50 nm diameter) length scales. In the current study, a series of in situ heating experiments was conducted on un-activated impregnated scandate cathode fragments, utilizing a micro-electro-mechanical system-based heater chip in a scanning electron microscope, enabling the real-time observation of cathode material evolution at elevated temperature (up to 1200 °C) under a pressure of 10−6 to 10−7 mbar. This study revealed how impregnant materials grow and migrate within the cathode matrix at elevated temperatures, and these observations are key to a thorough understanding of the behavior of scandate cathode materials. It also enabled direct observation of the incipient faceting of tungsten surfaces at high temperature while surrounded by impregnant materials. These are the first in situ observations of scandate cathode material evolution in relevant environmental conditions and at sufficiently high resolution to provide insights into the morphological and phase changes that occur in the near-surface regions of scandate cathodes.

Synthesis of impregnants for dispenser cathodes via homogeneous-lyophilization: Phase structure, optical response and emission property of four aluminates

Abstract:Dispenser cathodes are the most widely used electron emission source in vacuum electron devices. The impregnant is the source for producing active substances in the dispenser cathodes, which play an irreplaceable role. However, impregnants’ phase structure and optical response properties have yet to be systematically investigated. Herein, four aluminates were prepared as impregnants via homogeneous-lyophilization followed by calcination. Due to the unique preparation process, the elemental distribution of aluminates is exceptionally uniform. Based on the first-principles DFT calculations, the primary phases of the two aluminates 532 and 411 were confirmed to be (Ba0.61Ca0.39)3Al2O6 (P2 1 3) and (Ba0.75Ca0.25)4Al2O7 (Cmca). At the same time, α-Ba2ScAlO5 and β-Ba2ScAlO5 are the only phases of aluminates 411-0.75Sc and 411-1.25Sc, respectively. XPS confirmed two chemical states of Ba and Sc in the aluminates. FT-IR and 27Al NMR indicate that the aluminum-oxygen skeleton in all aluminates exists mainly as [AlO4] tetrahedrons, accompanied by a small amount of distorted [AlOx] (x = 5, 6) polyhedrons. The UV–visible light absorption capacity, band gap and intra-structural electron transfer capacity of all aluminates are determined by UV–Vis DRS and PL spectra. The dispenser cathodes impregnated with aluminates 532 and 411 have zero-field current densities of 5.3 A/cm2 and 14.3 A/cm2 at 1100°Cb, respectively. The dispenser cathodes impregnated with aluminate containing scandium have different space-charge-limited current densities, i.e., 29.48 A/cm2 for 411-0.75Sc and 13.66 A/cm2 for 411-1.25Sc at 1000°Cb. This work will provide more options for synthesizing and applying impregnants.

Abstract:The effect of thin-film characteristics on the thermionic emission of dispenser cathodes has been investigated. Nanoparticle Ir thin films were grown by magnetron sputtering at room temperature. Microstructures of these thin films grown at different sputtering pressures were observed using a scanning electron microscope. The results showed that the particle size of the films depended on the deposition rate in the nucleation stage of the Ir films, which could be well controlled by the sputtering pressure. N-type cathodes were fabricated by impregnating tungsten matrices of 25% porosity with 6: 1: 2-type barium calcium aluminate and then coating them with nanoparticle Ir thin films, 200-500 nm in thickness, in hydrogen at 1200 degrees C. A comparison was made in the emission uniformity between an N-type cathode (defined here as a Ba dispenser cathode coated with a layer of metal nanoparticles) and a traditional M-type cathode using a thermionic electron microscope. The chemical components of the vacuum background, the evaporants from an N-type cathode, and an M-type cathode were respectively analyzed using a time-of-flight mass spectrometer. The evaporating rates of the two types of cathodes and their dependence on the cathode temperatures were also investigated. Finally, the electron emission performance of the N-type cathodes was studied.

Abstract:Scandate cathode as a thermionic electron emission material has attracted broad interest owing to its high electron emission capability. Despite the large number of studies on the electron emission of the scandate tungsten cathode, there is a lack of understanding of the performance of scandium oxide incorporated in other refractory metal matrix. In this work, by applying first-principles calculations, we study the role that Sc 2 O 3 nanocluster plays in enhancing the electron emission of the Hf cathode (labeled as Sc 2 O 3 @Hf). We find that Sc 2 O 3 @Hf is both thermally and mechanically stable, exhibits complex surface structures, and possesses inverse relationship between surface energy and work function. Moreover, the work function of the Hf (0001) surface can be reduced to 3.50 eV due to the change in the vacuum level when Sc 2 O 3 nanocluster is doped, while the work function of the Hf (10 1 ̄ 2) surface can be reduced to 3.39, 3.39, and 3.03 eV when doped with Sc 2 O 3 , Y 2 O 3 , and CeO 2 clusters, respectively.

Abstract:Ti,Eu co-doped Y2O2S:0.06Ti,0.08Eu phosphor with red long afterglow emission from Eu ions was synthesized via traditional sintering method. Results showed that sintering temperature has great influence on the crystal structure, luminescence and afterglow property of the phosphors. The best luminescence and afterglow properties were obtained for the phosphors sintered at 1200°C for 2.5h. Furthermore, only emissions originated from charge transition of Eu3+ was found in the luminescence spectra whereas the afterglow spectra were composed of two sets of emissions: a broad yellow emission band around 565nm and a group of narrow peaks in the wavelength range above 530 nm. The origin of afterglow spectra was discussed: the former is likely related to emission from Ti related traps and the latter is supposed to come from the Eu3+ through an energy transfer process from Ti emission to Eu3+.

Abstract:In this article, co-precipitation was combined with a high-temperature solid-state reaction to realize strontium (Sr) doping of the emission-active materials (Ba–Sr–Sc–Ca–Al–O) of scandate dispenser cathodes. The precursor of the co-precipitation product was composed of alkaline Earth metal carbonates and hydroxides of Sc and Al. The final products included Ba2ScAlO5 and Ba3CaAl2O7 and Sr in the form of strontium aluminates (SrAl12O19 or SrAl4O7). At 1100°CB, the pulse current density of the Sr-doped cathode in a planar diode reached 215.5 A/cm2, exceeding that of conventional scandate cathodes without Sr. The developed emission-active materials and corresponding cathodes are more adaptable to vacuum electronic devices (VEDs) and have a wider range of potential applications than conventional cathodes.

Abstract:Eu3+-doped Y2O3-based luminescent materials can be used as a scintillator for electron or high energy β-ray irradiation, which are essential for applications such as electron microscopy and nuclear batteries. Therefore, it is essential to understand their defect mechanisms and to develop materials with excellent properties. In this paper, Y2O3-based transparent ceramics with different Eu3+ doping concentrations were prepared by solid-state reactive vacuum sintering. This series of transparent ceramic samples exhibits strong red emission under electron beam excitation at the keV level. However, color change appears after the high-energy electron irradiation due to the capture of electrons by the traps in the Y2O3 lattice. Optical transmittance, laser-excited luminescence, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and other analyses indicated that the traps, or the color change, mainly originate from the residual oxygen vacancies, which can be suppressed by high Eu doping. Seen from the cathodoluminescence (CL) spectra, higher doping concentrations of Eu3+ showed stronger resistance to electron irradiation damage, but also resulted in lower emissions due to concentration quenching. Therefore, 10% doping of Eu was selected in this work to keep the high emission intensity and strong radiation resistance both. This work helps to enhance the understanding of defect formation mechanisms in the Y2O3 matrix and will be of benefit for the modification of scintillation properties for functional materials systems.

Scandium function in “scandate” thermionic cathodes: A microspot synchrotron radiation x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy study of co-adsorbed Ba-Sc-O on W(100)

Abstract:The coadsorption of barium, scandium, and oxygen on W(100) was investigated with microspot synchrotron radiation x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy ( μ-SRXPS) in the emission microscope at the electron-spectro-microscopy beam line at the National Synchrotron Light Source II. The Ba-Sc-O-W(100) system is a model for “scandate” thermionic electron emitters. The barium 4d, tungsten 4f, and scandium 3p (Sc3p) levels were observed after metal deposition and adsorption of oxygen. The initial deposits of metallic scandium and barium were confirmed with μ-SRXPS. After oxygen adsorption, the Sc3p peaks shifted to higher binding energy (by >4 eV), indicating the formation of Sc2O3 or a related compound. After heating to 800 °C, the barium 4d peaks were no longer observed. The shifted Sc3p peak was also absent. The results indicate that scandium acts as a cleaning agent to remove oxygen from the tungsten surface. The oxidized scandium is removed by reaction with barium and desorption below 800 °C. The temperature of desorption indicates that scandium does not remain on the surface at a temperature where a contribution to the reduction of the surface barrier to electron emission could be expected.

Abstract:Although thermionic emission has been studied for more than 100 years, recent interest in novel electron devices for military and civilian use has led to a surge in demand for cathodes with enhanced emission properties (e.g., higher current density, more uniform emission, lower operating temperatures, or extended in-service longevity). Sc-containing "scandate" cathodes have been widely reported to exhibit superior emission properties compared to previous-generation thermionic cathodes, including oxide, B-, and M-type cathodes. Despite extensive study spanning several decades, the mechanism by which the addition of Sc enhances cathode emission remains ambiguous, and nonuniform emission, low reproducibility, and inconsistent longevity continue to prevent widespread commercial integration of scandate cathodes into electron devices. This second part of a two-part review explores the various mechanisms proposed for how Sc enhances electron emission and summarizes ongoing scientific challenges relating to the development and deployment of scandate cathodes.

Intrinsic defects and conduction characteristics of $Sc_2O_3$ in thermionic cathode systems

Abstract:Recent experimental observations indicate that bulk $Sc_2O_3$ (~200 nm thick), an insulator at room temperature and pressure, must act as a good electronic conductor during thermionic cathode operation, leading to the observed high emitted current densities and overall superior emission properties over conventional thermionic emitters which do not contain $Sc_2O_3$. Here, we employ ab initio methods using both semilocal and hybrid functionals to calculate the intrinsic defect energetics of Sc and O vacancies and interstitials and their effects on the electronic properties of $Sc_2O_3$ in an effort to explain the good conduction of $Sc_2O_3$ observed in experiment. The defect energetics were used in an equilibrium defect model to calculate the concentrations of defects and their compensating electron and hole concentrations at equilibrium. Overall, our results indicate that the conductivity of $Sc_2O_3$ solely due to the presence of intrinsic defects in the cathode operating environment is unlikely to be high enough to maintain the magnitude of emitted current densities obtained from experiment, and that presence of impurities are necessary to raise the conductivity of $Sc_2O_3$ to a high enough value to explain the current densities observed in experiment. The necessary minimum impurity concentration to impart sufficient electronic conduction is very small (approximately $7.5x10^{-3}$ ppm) and is probably present in all experiments.

Abstract:The photocatalytic properties of CoFe 2 O 4 nanoparticles were activated by the doping and co-doping of a low level of Y 3+ and Sm 3+ cations. After optimizing the annealing temperature, 900 °C was found to be the optimal temperature for the successful incorporation of Y 3+ and Sm 3+ into the spinel structure. The purity of our samples annealed at 900 °C was confirmed using several characterization methods, including PXRD, SEM, XPS, VSM, FTIR, and Raman spectroscopy. Thus, we were able to increase the photocatalytic degradation of orange G dye from 9.9 to 64.63% for the Sm 3+ -doped sample, 76.42% for the Y 3+ -doped sample, and even 85.81% for the co-doped sample under 60 min of UV–visible light irradiation. The beneficial effect of samarium and yttrium doping and co-doping is attributed to several factors: the first factor is doped and co-doped rare earth impurities induce distortion in the lattice, the larger the ionic radii of dopant element, the highest is the photocatalytic activity; second factor, upon doping and co-doping of rare earth impurities in the structure of CoFe 2 O 4 leads to the creation of donor state level within the band gap, causing the Fermi energy to shift near the conduction band. Third factor, co-doping produced strong interactions, which accelerated photocarrier mobility and transport; lastly, longer electron-holes lifetime. We have provided a detailed study of the structural, vibrational, and optical properties to support our conclusions.

Abstract:Tungsten-doped tin oxide (SnO2:W) transparent conductive films were prepared on quartz substrates by pulsed plasma deposition method with a post-annealing. The structure, chemical states, electrical and optical properties of the films have been investigated with tungsten-doping content and annealing temperature. The lowest resistivity of 6.67 x 10(-4) Omega cm was obtained, with carrier mobility of 65 cm(2) V-1 s(-1) and carrier concentration of 1.44 x 10(20) cm(-3) in 3 wt.% tungsten-doping films annealed at 800 degrees C in air. The average optical transmittance achieves 86% in the visible region, and approximately 85% in near-infrared region, with the optical hand gap ranging from 4.05 eV to 4.22 eV. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. Fabrication and Characterization of La0.6Sr0.4Co0.2Fe0.8O3-δ-Yttria Stabilized Zirconia Composites Cathode Prepared by Infiltration Method

Abstract:Composite cathodes of yttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ) with Sr-, Co- doped LaFeO3 (LSCF) are prepared by infiltration of a porous YSZ matrix with different weight of aqueous solutions of the stoichiometric metal salts, followed by firing at various temperatures. X-ray diffraction measurements show that the LSCF perovskite phase had formed at 800-900oC and that solid-state reaction with the YSZ does not occur below approximately 950 oC. Various contents of LSCF from 15wt.% to 60wt.% are loaded in porous YSZ of anode supported cell (porous YSZ||YSZ||NiO-YSZ). The cell with 45wt.% LSCF exhibits better performance and lower interfacial resistance. The cell performance of LSCF fired at 850oC is better than that of LSCF fired at 800 and 900oC. The peak power densities of YSZ anode supported cell with 45 wt.% LSCF fired at 850oC are about 640, 869, and 972mWcm-2 at 700, 750, and 800oC, respectively. The infiltrated LSCF cathode displays high catalytic activity and performance for the unique nano film coating fabricated with certain content at low temperature.

Abstract:The doping of transition metals can effectively modulate the electronic structures and enhance the photocatalytic activity of MXenes. The electronic and photocatalytic properties, as well as the quantum capacitance of Sc2CO2-Y under biaxial strain, were studied by density functional theory. Sc2CO2-Y is a direct semiconductor and keeps its semiconductor character under strain. Sc2CO2-Y under tensile strain has higher photocatalytic activity than under compressive strain. In particular, Sc2CO2-Y at 2% strain has the slowest recombination rate of electrons and holes because of the largest . Sc2CO2-Y under strain is a potential cathode material. Its large potential keeps the character of cathode materials for Sc2CO2-Y under strain. Sc2CO2-Y under tensile strain has better conductivity, especially under 5% strain, due to having the largest Re (ε0). Sc2CO2-Y under strain can perform the HER, but fails to perform the OER at pH = 0, and tensile strain increases the reduction capacity of Sc2CO2-Y. Under strains from -2% to 2%, Sc2CO2-Y can perform the OER in an alkaline environment. Sc2CO2-Y is a good CO2 photocatalyst in acidic environments; the increase of pH value weakens the N2 reducing capacity of Sc2CO2-Y under strain. Its work function, charge transfer and optical properties are also explored.
