Abstract:In order to measure refractive index of liquid with high-precision and low-cost,a liquid refractive index sensor based on a micro-hole in the single-mode fiber was fabricated by means of water-assisted femtosecond laser ablation method.The responses of transmission loss of the sensor to the refractive index and micro-hole length were investigated.Based on the ray theory,the sensing mechanism was analyzed.The effect of temperature disturbance on the sensor performance was also discussed.The experiment results show that the sensor has a good linear response in the refractive index range of 1.333~1.413,the sensitivity of the sensor can achieve 157.48dB/RIU and it is less susceptible to temperature change.Compared with other fiber refractive index sensors,optical fiber micro-hole sensors have the outstanding advantages,including compact,easy to fabricate,high sensitivity insensitive to temperature and low cost,etc.Therefore optical fiber micro-hole sensors can have extensive application in the fields of biochemical measurement.

Abstract:A new fiber interface Mach-Zehnder interferometer has been fabricated, to the best of our knowledge, in coreless fiber by femtosecond laser-inscription for temperature-insensitive refractive index measurement. A straight waveguide was inscribed along the central axis of the coreless fiber as the reference arm, and the other curved waveguide (interface waveguide) was then inscribed bending toward the cladding interface to obtain a strong evanescent field sensitive to ambient refractive index. This fiber interface Mach-Zehnder interferometer exhibits a high refractive index (RI) sensitivity of ∼3000 nm/RIU at an RI value of 1.432. Moreover, with the significant advantages of high mechanical strength and temperature independence, such a fiber Mach-Zehnder interferometer may find many potential applications in biochemical sensing.

Abstract:A compact micro multicavity Fabry–Perot (FP) optical fiber tip sensor is presented. In the end of the single-mode fiber (SMF), we drill a short air hole with femtosecond laser, which forms a multicavity together with the fiber flat face tip. The sensor has been experimentally tested for refractive index (RI) and temperature sensing by monitoring its wavelength shift. Simultaneous measurement of both changes in the ambient temperature and the RI can be realized using the sensitivity matrix. Measurement results show that the in-line FP exhibits the gas RI sensitivity of 867.76nm/RIU and the temperature sensitivity of 7.8pm/°C within the range of 24–104°C, and the device is highly stable over time.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate an open-cavity fiber extrinsic Fabry-Perot (FP) interferometer (EFPI), fabricated by using 800 nm femtosecond (fs) laser micromachining, for refractive index (RI) measurement. The sensor probe consists of two single-mode fiber (SMF) and a notched hollow-core fiber (HCF) fused together to form an all-silica structure of SMF-HCF-SMF. The open micro-cavity is formed by removing part of the HCF in the center of its surface by fs laser micromachining technology, allowing liquid or gaseous sample to flow in. Such a sensor can provide an extremely high-precision RI measurement of 10(-6) RIU (refractive index unit) and the sensitivity can reach up to 4x10(5) nm/RIU within the range between 1.355 and 1.374.

Abstract:A novel optical fiber Fabry-Pérot (F-P) refractive-index sensor is reported. A micro-hole is made by etching the tip of a cleaved erbium-doped fiber (EDF). We fabricate a self-enclosed F-P cavity inside an optical fiber by splicing the first fiber to another cleaved fiber. The micro-hole by etching is a flute, a microchannel is made by cleaving and then polishing near the flute, and the light could return which results in F-P interferometer unharmed. The liquid could easily get into the F-P cavity by capillarity. According to the F-P interference principle, the reflection spectra pit wavelength of the sensor is linear with refractive index in the cavity. The experimental results show that the linearity is 0.9996 and the sensitivity is 1068 nm/RIU at the refractive-index range of 1.3333 to 1.3899. The sensor is all-fiber structure, having many advantages such as small size, steady structure, high precision, enduring cautery, etc. It could meet subminiature applications for refractive-index measurement.

Abstract:Different types of microstructures including microchannels and microslots were made in optical fibers using femtosecond laser inscription and chemical etching. Integrated with UV-inscribed fiber Bragg gratings, these microstructures have miniature, robustness and high sensitivity features and have been used to implement novel devices for various sensing applications. The fiber microchannels were used to detect the refractive index change of liquid presenting sensitivities up to 7.4 nm/refractive index unit (RIU) and 166.7 dB/RIU based on wavelength and power detection, respectively. A microslot-in-fiber based liquid core waveguide as a refractometer has been proposed and the device was used to measure refractive index, and a sensitivity up to 945 nm/RIU (10(-6)/pm) was obtained. By filling epoxy in the microslot and subsequent UV light curing, a hybrid waveguide grating structure with polymer core and glass cladding was fabricated. The obtained device was highly thermal responsive, demonstrating a linear coefficient of 211 pm/degrees C.

Abstract:An optical fiber in-line Mach-Zehnder interferometer based on a pair of inner microholes in the fiber core is proposed and demonstrated for refractive index and temperature sensing. The microhole is fabricated by firstly inscribing a short line structure by femtosecond, and then discharging the short line area by using a fusion splicer. The incident light beam on the first microhole is divided into two parts, one remains traveling in the fiber core and the other is directed into the cladding and then collected by the second microhole after multiple reflections at the air/cladding interface. The two parts recombines in the fiber core, thus forming a Mach-Zehnder interferometer. By controlling the separation of the two microholes, transmission spectrum with different free spectral range can be obtained. The sensitivities achieved for refractive index and temperature are similar to 68.2 nm/ RIU and 57.8 pm/degrees C, respectively. Such a device is robust in structure, easy in fabrication, and convenient in operation.

Abstract:The Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI) cavity in a single-mode fiber with two open faces was fabricated by using the method of femtosecond laser-induced water breakdown. Then the FPI cavity was annealed by the arc discharge to greatly smooth its internal surface. The whole fabrication process features simple operation and high efficiency. The fabricated FPI cavity exhibits a perfect interferometer spectrum with reflection loss of only -3 dB and fringe visibility of almost 30 dB. It can be used as a perfectly reliable liquid refractive index sensor, as it exhibits high sensitivity (1147.48 nm/RIU), good linearity (99.93%), good repeatability, high actual measurement accuracy (1.29×10(-4)RIU), large measurement range, and good temperature insensitive characteristic.

Abstract:An ultra-compact and sensitive Fabry-Perot interferometer liquid refractive index sensor is presented. The device consists of an inner reflection mirror in single-mode fiber written by femtosecond laser and a hollow-core fiber. Two micro-holes are drilled on the side wall of the hollow-core fiber by femtosecond laser micromachining, which enables the liquid freely enters or leaves the hollow-core cavity. An enhanced and precisely controllable amplification factor can be obtained for the Vernier effect used, which provides an ultra-high refractive index sensitivity of − 73417.9 nm/RIU (refractive index unit). The device has ultra-compact size, simple structure, high sensitivity, and is featured with easy fabrication and good reproducing capability, thus exhibiting high potential in many sensing applications in biomedicine and chemical industry.

Abstract:We report on multiplexing several Fabry-Pérot (FP) cavities in single-mode optical fibers for highprecision spatially resolved sensing of refractive indices (RI) of liquids. Resonators are fabricated by cutting small slots into fibers using a diamond-blade dicing saw and additional coating with thin Ta 2 O 5 layers to increase cavity reflectance. Temperature compensation of RI measurements is achieved either by evaluating the reflection signals resulting from the solid core parts between different open-cavity sensor elements, or by using a thin Si inlay glued into one of the open cavities. The multiplexing performance and accuracy of the fabricated sensors with up to four open cavities were tested on sucrose solutions over a range of temperatures.
Tunable Mode Coupler in the Microfluidic Channel for the Fiber Optics Refractive Index Sensor

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a highly sensitive optical fiber microfluidic refractometer. A microhole is fabricated in the photonic crystal fiber (PCF) by using femtosecond laser beam, which combines the tunable mode coupler and microfluidic channel. The mode field diameter of the guided light is changed with the refractive index in the microfluidic channel, which results in the tunable coupling ratio between the core and the cladding in the PCF. Therefore, the refractive index of the liquid in the microfluidic channel is detected by interrogating the fringe visibility of the reflection spectrum. These experiments results demonstrate that the sensor is insensitive with the temperature and strain, and a RI sensitivity of up to 150.7 dB / RIU is achieved, establishing the tunable mode coupler as a sensitive and versatile sensor.

Abstract:A novel miniature fiber-optic Fabry-Perot refractive-index sensor machined by 157 nm laser is proposed.The sensor head consists of a micro air F-P cavity near the tip of a single-mode fiber with a micro channel on the fiber tip.The micro channel is used as the entrance for medium under test.Two thin films are coated at reflective interfaces of the F-P cavity as mirrors to ensure high optical contrast,respectively.A RI resolution of 1 130.887 nm/ refractive-index unit is achieved by experiment.Compared with other fiber-optic RI sensors,the proposed sensor has a number of outstanding advantages including small,rigid,high resolution,excellent linearity,and wide measurement range,etc,which can meet the requirements for practical applications especially in biomedical diagnostic where small sensor size is essential.

Abstract:A novel and simple microfabrication method for in-line micro-cavity based fiber Mach–Zehnder interferometers (FMZIs) is proposed and demonstrated by nanosecond (ns) pulsed fibers lasers for the first time. Instead of using high-end femtosecond laser for the fabrication process, only conventional ns-pulsed fiber lasers of modest optical powers are required in our approach. Such fabricated fiber MZ interferometer has exhibited a high sensitivity of −20048 nm/RIU (refractive index unit) for the index sensing application. The achieved index sensitivity is in good agreement with the theoretical estimation.

Abstract:Long-period fiber grating sensors with high refractive index sensitivity were designed and validated using femtosecond laser direct writing. The device consists of a single-mode fiber and a 2 cm long thin-core fiber fused. The refractive index is changed periodically by direct writing of a femtosecond laser pulse at the core of the thin-core fiber. Fiber gratings with periods of 80 μm, 150 μm, and 300 μm were selected for the study and showed maximum refractive indices of 1.4054, 1.4215, and 1.4326, respectively. With an 80 μm period, the maximum refractive index sensitivity increases significantly with wavelength and reaches 1430 nm/RIU. The temperature sensitivity is 7.6 pm/°C between 30 °C–430 °C and 14.4 pm/°C between 430 °C–630 °C. The sensor is high-temperature resistant, robust, simple to fabricate, and has a wide range of measurable refractive indices. This thin-core long-period fiber grating can better reduce crosstalk due to temperature effects in refractive index testing.

Abstract:All-optical fiber sensors based on ultracompact fiber inline Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) are fabricated by side-ablating a U-shape microcavity in a single-mode optical fiber with the fiber core partially removed using femtosecond (fs) laser pulses, in which the two light paths are accordingly formed in the remaining D-type fiber core and the U-shape microcavity. Beam propagation method (BPM) analysis is utilized to illustrate the dependences of good transmission spectra on parameters including the ablation depth, ablation length and the refractive index of U-shape micocavity, which gives some guidelines to optimize parameters for fs laser micromachining and predicts RI (refractive index) sensitivities within given RI ranges. The modeling results of ultrahigh RI sensitivities for gases and solutions are -3243.75 ± 0.65nm/RIU (refractive index unit) and -10789.29 ± 18.91nm/RIU, respectively. In RI testing experiments, the sensor exhibits ultrahigh RI sensitivities of -3754.79 ± 44.24nm/RIU with refractive indices ranging from 1.0001143 to 1.0002187 by testing different mixture ratios of N2 and He gases, and -12162.01 ± 173.92nm/RIU with refractive indices ranging from 1.3330 to 1.33801 by testing different concentrations of sucrose solutions, which is essentially in agreement with the modeling results.

Abstract:A miniature fiber-optic gap-coupled cladding waveguide Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) is proposed and demonstrated for high-sensitive refractive index measurement. Two straight cladding waveguides respectively coupled with the fiber core are inscribed by a femtosecond laser (fs) to form the MZI structure. At their far ends, the two cladding waveguides are very close to the cladding surface, and a short separation was intentionally designed for the coupling of light between them and generating light field with evanescent wave expanded outside the cladding surface, which makes the MZI structure very sensitive to ambient refractive variations. In a refractive index range of 1.34–1.42, a high sensitivity of −59.90238 nm/RIU is achieved simultaneously with good linearity. The sensing structure also shows good characteristic of temperature insensitivity, which may find practical applications in chemical or biological sensing.

Abstract:The sensing characteristics of optical fiber F-P refractive index sensor produced by 157 nm excimer laser micromachining system in normal single-mode optical fiber was analysed.The reflective spectrum interferometic fringe count of this F-P sensor,which can avoid the fluctuation of optical power of the measurement system was employed,and it could lead to a large refractive index measurement range.The length variation of a F-P cavity with about 25 μm length is 6.25nm when the temperature varies from 0 ℃ to 70 ℃,which equates the refractive index variation of the cavity～2.46×10-4.The glycerin solution with the refractive index range of 1.33～1.427 was measured in normal temperature.The correlation coefficient of fitting curve of experiment results is 0.9951 and the resolution is～2.46×10-4.

Abstract:Liquid refractive index sensor with three-cascaded microchannels in single-mode fiber was fabricated by femtosecond laser-induced water breakdown. When the liquid is filled in three microchannels across the fiber core, the transmission spectrum of the sensor shows interference peaks. The refractive index of liquid can be sensed accurately based on both the wavelength shift and loss change of interference peaks. The refractive index sensitivities of wavelength shift and loss change reach to as high as −2,406.1 nm/RIU and −156.8 dB/RIU, respectively. The sensor is insensitive to the refractive index change of liquid caused by environmental temperature. It can be used for liquid refractive index sensing with high sensitivity, especially for water pollution monitoring.
