Abstract:We report the magnetization, electrical resistivity, specific heat measurements and band structure calculations of layered superconductor SnTaS$_2$. The experiments are performed on single crystals grown by chemical vapor transport method. The resistivity and magnetic susceptibility indicate that SnTaS$_2$ is a type-II superconductor with transition temperature $T_c = 3$ K. The upper critical field ($H_{c2}$) shows large anisotropy for magnetic field parallel to $ab$ plane ($H//ab$) and $c$ axis ($H//c$), and the temperature dependence of $H_{c2}$ for $H//ab$ shows obvious unconventional upward feature at low temperature. Band structure of SnTaS$_2$ shows several band crossings near the Fermi level, which form three nodal lines in the k$_z$ = 0 plane resulting in drumhead-like surface states when spin-orbit coupling is not considered. These results indicate that SnTaS$_2$ is a superconductor with possible topological nodal line semimetal character.
Superconductivity and Quantum Oscillations in Ternary Weyl Semimetal TaIrTe4

Abstract:The search for unconventional superconductivity in Weyl semimetal materials is currently an exciting pursuit, since such superconducting phases could potentially be topologically nontrivial and host exotic Majorana modes. The layered material TaIrTe4 is a newly predicted time-reversal invariant type II Weyl semimetal with minimum Weyl points. Here, by a systematical study based on electrical transport measurements at ultralow temperature and in ultrahigh magnetic field, we discover that TaIrTe4 crystals exhibit quasi one dimensional (quasi 1D) superconductivity with an onset transition temperature (Tc) up to 1.54 K, and observe Shubnikov de Haas (SdH) quantum oscillations with multiple periods reflecting the nontrivial band topology. The normalized upper critical field h*(T/Tc) behavior implies that the discovered superconductivity in TaIrTe4 is unconventional with finite triplet pairing contribution. The observed superconductivity is further confirmed by scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/STS) measurements. These results suggest that TaIrTe4 is a novel platform which may be applicable to explore topological superconductivity.

Abstract:Coexistence of topological bands and charge density wave (CDW) in topological materials has attracted immense attentions because of their fantastic properties, such as axionic-CDW, three-dimensional quantum Hall effect, etc. In this work, a nodal-line semimetal InxTaS2 characterized by CDW and superconductivity is successfully synthesized, whose structure and topological bands (two separated Wely rings) are similar to In0.58TaSe2. A 2 x 2 commensurate CDW is observed at low temperature in InxTaS2, identified by transport properties and STM measurements. Moreover, superconductivity emerges below 0.69 K, and the anisotropy ratio of upper critical field [Gamma = H||ab c2(0)=H||c c2(0)] is significantly enhanced compared to 2H-TaS2, which shares the same essential layer unit. According to the Lawrence-Doniach model, the enhanced Gamma may be explained by the reduced effective mass in kx-ky plane, where Weyl rings locate. Therefore, this type of layered topological systems may offer a platform to investigate highly anisotropic superconductivity and to understand the extremely large upper critical field in the bulk or in the two-dimensional limit.

Abstract:Topological crystalline metals and semimetals (TCMs) have stimulated great research interest, which broadens the classification of topological phases and provides a valuable platform to explore topological superconductivity. Here, we report the discovery of superconductivity and topological features in Pb-intercalated transition-metal dichalcogenide Pb1/3TaS2. Systematic measurements indicate that Pb1/3TaS2 is a quasi-two-dimensional (q-2D) type-II superconductor (T-c approximate to 2.8 K) with a significantly enhanced anisotropy of upper critical field (gamma H-c2 = H-c2(ab) / H-c2(c) approximate to 17). In addition, first-principles calculations reveal that Pb1/3TaS2 hosts multiple topological Dirac fermions in the electronic band structure. We discover four groups of Dirac nodal lines on the k(z) = pi plane and two sets of Dirac points on the rotation or screw axes, which are protected by crystalline symmetries and robust against spin-orbit coupling (SOC). Dirac-cone-like surface states emerge on the (001) surface because of band inversion. Our work shows that the TCM candidate Pb1/3TaS2 is a promising arena to study the interplay between superconductivity and topological Dirac fermions.
Superconductivity and single crystal growth of Ni0.05TaS2

Abstract:Superconductivity was discovered in a Ni0.05TaS2 single crystal. A Ni0.05TaS2 single crystal was successfully grown via the NaCl/KCl flux method. The obtained lattice constant c of Ni0.05TaS2 is 1.1999 nm, which is significantly smaller than that of 2H–TaS2 (1.208 nm). Electrical resistivity and magnetization measurements reveal that the superconductivity transition temperature of Ni0.05TaS2 is enhanced from 0.8 K (2H–TaS2) to 3.9 K. The charge-density-wave transition of the matrix compound 2H–TaS2 is suppressed in Ni0.05TaS2. The success of Ni0.05TaS2 single crystal growth via a NaCl/KCl flux demonstrates that NaCl/KCl flux method will be a feasible method for single crystal growth of the layered transition metal dichalcogenides.
Superconductivity of Ni-doping 2H–TaS2

Abstract:The superconductivity of 2H–NixTaS2 single crystals with Ni-doping content of 0⩽x⩽0.08 is investigated. Compared with the temperature dependence of resistivity ρ(T) curve of un-doped 2H–TaS2 with charge density wave (CDW) transition (TCDW=78K), no sign of CDW is observed for Ni-doping sample NixTaS2, meaning the suppression of CDW caused by Ni-doping. The increase of superconducting critical temperature TC caused by Ni-doping is observed and the optimal Ni-doping content corresponding to the maximum zero resistance temperature TCzeromax=4.15K is x=0.04. The superconductivity of Ni0.04TaS2 is investigated in detail. The obtained superconducting parameters indicated that Ni0.04TaS2 is an intermediate coupling anisotropic type-II superconductor with anisotropy ratio γ=Hc2ab(T)/Hc2c(T)≈3.58.

Abstract:A large number of single-crystal line TaS2 nanobelts have been prepared via a two-step method. In this approach, TaS3 nanobelts as precursors were synthesized via chemical vapour transition (CVT), and pyrolysed into TaS2 nanobelts in vacuum. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed that the TaS2 nanobelts have a rectangular section of similar to 15 x 40 to 80 x 900 nm(2), and length up to several. centimetres. Magnetic measurement indicated that the TaS2 nanobelts have superconductivity at 2.7 K, and the superconducting transition temperature (T-c) is higher than that (T-c = 0.8 K) reported for the bulk 2H-TaS2. The current density in electron field ernission reached about 100 mu A cm(-2) at an applied field of about 27 V mu m(-1) so the nanobelts could be used as electronic field emitters.

Abstract:Single crystals of TaS3 and Nb-doped Ta0.8Nb0.2S3 were grown by the usual vapor-transport method. The low-field DC resistivity, thermoelectric power, and I–V characteristics of both samples have been measured. Non-linear I–V characteristics due to possible CDW transition were found in Ta0.8Nb0.2S3 at temperatures up to 400K and the temperature dependence of resistivity remained insulator-like even when the temperature was as high as 400K. Possible CDW transition in Ta0.8Nb0.2S3 crystals at temperatures above 400K is suggested and need further studies to confirm.

Abstract:The discovery of coexistence of bulk superconductivity and nontrivial topological bands in the compounds, such as LaO and NbC, with a rocksalt structure, motivates us to study the physical properties of TaO with the same structure. Based on preparing successfully TaO polycrystalline sample, we measured its resistivity, magnetization, and specific heat. It was first found that TaO is a type-II superconductor with the critical temperature Tc = 6.20 K and the Ginzburg–Landau parameter κGL(0) = 16.2. The estimated electron–phonon coupling constant λep (0.62) and the specific heat jump ΔCel/γnTc (0.56) demonstrate that TaO is a weak-coupling phonon-mediated superconductor. The lack of single crystal sample impedes us to study experimentally its properties related to the electronic band topology, which is the subject of endeavor in the future.

Abstract:Since interface superconductivity was discovered at the interface between two insulating layers LaAlO3 and SrTiO3, such interface-induced superconducting systems have been a research hotspot in superconductivity. Here, we report homogeneous interfaces formed by stacking chemically exfoliated monolayer TaS2 nanosheets randomly. Enhanced superconductivity of Tc = 3 K is observed, compared with 0.8 K of parent 2H-TaS2. The measurement of heat capacity shows the increase of electronic specific-heat coefficient γ of restacked TaS2 nanosheets compared to parent 2H-TaS2 crystals. Density functional theory calculations indicate that increase and delocalization of electron states near the Fermi surface due to the homogeneous interfaces effects could account for the enhanced superconductivity.
Unusual Evolution of Bc2 and Tc with Inclined Fields in Restacked TaS2 Nanosheets

Abstract:Recently we reported an enhanced superconductivity in restacked monolayer TaS2 nanosheets compared with the bulk TaS2, pointing to the exotic physical properties of low dimensional systems. Here we tune the superconducting properties of this system with magnetic field along different directions, where a strong Pauli paramagnetic spin-splitting effect is found in this system. Importantly, an unusual enhancement as high as 3.8 times of the upper critical field B-c2, as compered with the Ginzburg-Landau (GL) model and Tinkham model, is observed under the inclined external magnetic field. Moreover, with the out-of-plane field fixed, we find that the superconducting transition temperature T-c can be enhanced by increasing the in-plane field and forms a domeshaped phase diagram. An extended GL model considering the special microstructure with wrinkles was proposed to describe the results. The restacked crystal structure without inversion center along with the strong spin-orbit coupling may also play an important role for our observations.

Abstract:The metallic ground state in two-dimensional (2D) superconductors has attracted much attention but is still under intense scrutiny. Especially, the measurements in the ultralow temperature region are challenging for 2D superconductors due to the sensitivity to external perturbations. In this work, the resistance saturation induced by external noise, named as the "extrinsic anomalous metallic state", is observed in 2D transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) superconductor 4Ha-TaSe2 nanodevices. However, with further decreasing temperature, credible evidence of the intrinsic anomalous metallic state is obtained by adequately filtering external radiation. Our work indicates that, at ultralow temperatures, the anomalous metallic state can be experimentally revealed as the quantum ground state in 2D crystalline TMD superconductors. Abstract:Interplay among various collective electronic states such as charge density wave and superconductivity is of tremendous significance in low-dimensional electron systems. However, the atomistic and physical nature of the electronic structures underlying the interplay of exotic states, which is critical to clarifying its effect on remarkable properties of the electron systems, remains elusive, limiting our understanding of the superconducting mechanism. Here, we show evidence that an ordering of selenium and sulphur atoms surrounding tantalum within star-of-David clusters can boost superconductivity in a layered chalcogenide 1T-TaS2-xSex, which undergoes a superconducting transition in the nearly commensurate charge density wave phase. Advanced electron microscopy investigations reveal that such an ordered superstructure forms only in the x area, where the superconductivity manifests, and is destructible to the occurrence of the Mott metal-insulator transition. The present findings provide a novel dimension in understanding the relationship between lattice and electronic degrees of freedom.
Fabrication and superconductivity of NaxTaS2 crystals

Abstract:In this paper we report the growth and superconductivity of $Na_xTaS_2$ crystals. The structural data deduced from X-ray diffraction pattern shows that the sample has the same structure as $2H-TaS_2$. A series of crystals with different superconducting transition temperatures ($T_c$) ranging from 2.5 K to 4.4 K were obtained. It is found that the $T_c$ rises with the increase of $Na$ content determined by Energy-Dispersive x-ray microanalysis(EDX) of Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) on these crystals. Compared with the resistivity curve of un-intercalated sample $2H-TaS_2$ ($T_c$ = 0.8 K, $T_{CDW} \approx$ 70 K), no signal of charge density wave (CDW) was observed in samples $Na_{0.1}TaS_2$ and $Na_{0.05}TaS_2$. However, in some samples with lower $T_c$, the CDW appears again at about 65 K. Comparison between the anisotropic resistivity indicates that the anisotropy becomes smaller in samples with more $Na$ intercalation (albeit a weak semiconducting behavior along c-axis) and thus higher $T_c$. It is thus concluded that there is a competition between the superconductivity and the CDW. With the increase of sodium content, the rise of $T_c$ in $Na_xTaS_2$ is caused mainly by the suppression to the CDW in $2H-TaS_2$, and the conventional rigid band model for layered dichalcogenide may be inadequate to explain the changes induced by the slight intercalation of sodium in $2H-TaS_2$.

Intrinsic and Doping-Enhanced Superconductivity in Monolayer 1h−tas2 : Critical Role of Charge Ordering and Spin-Orbit Coupling

Abstract:The interplay of superconductivity with charge density wave (CDW) in metallic transition-metal dichalcogenides has been widely debated, and viable strategies manipulating these quantum states in the two-dimensional (2D) limit remain unclear. Using the ab initio anisotropic Migdal-Eliashberg theory, we successfully explain the superconductivity observed in monolayer 1H-TaS2 by simultaneously determining its precise CDW structure and treating the marked modification of electron-phonon interaction and critical temperature Tc by spin-orbit coupling effects. With this paradigm, we further show that electron doping weakens the CDW order leading to increased Tc up to 11 K, along with a single-gap to two-gap superconductivity transition due to the suppression of the CDW gap. By contrast, a low hole doping barely affects the CDW but still yields a significantly enhanced superconducting order, implying their good coexistence. Combined with the synergistic behavior of CDW and superconductivity, which cooperate upon TaS2 thickness reduction causing an unusual rise of Tc, our results unravel diversified interactions between the two collective orders in ultrathin TaS2, being competition, coexistence or cooperation depending on external stimuli, which provide key clues for controlling correlated states in devices based on 2D CDW superconductors.

Abstract:The hydrolysis of H2TaF7 when it slowly forms via etching Ta powders with HF and H2O2 under hydrothermal conditions produces hierarchical nanostructures of fluorinated and naked Ta2O5 single-crystalline nanorods, which exhibit a far greater photocatalytic activity for H-2 production than commercial Ta2O5 particles.

Abstract:Ferromagnetism and superconductivity are two antagonistic phenomena since ferromagnetic exchange fields tend to destroy singlet Cooper pairs. Reconciliation of these two competing phases has been achieved in vertically stacked heterostructures where these two orders are confined in different layers. However, controllable integration of these two phases in one atomic layer is a longstanding challenge. Here, an interlayer-space-confined chemical design (ICCD) is reported for the synthesis of dilute single-atom-doped TaS2 molecular superlattice, whereby ferromagnetism is observed in the superconducting TaS2 layers. The intercalation of 2H-TaS2 crystal with bulky organic ammonium molecule expands its van der Waals gap for single-atom doping via co-intercalated cobalt ions, resulting in the formation of quasi-monolayer Co-doped TaS2 superlattices. Isolated Co atoms are decorated in the basal plane of the TaS2 via substituting the Ta atom or anchoring at a hollow site, wherein the orbital-selected p-d hybridization between Co and neighboring Ta and S atoms induces local magnetic moments with strong ferromagnetic coupling. This ICCD approach can be applied to various metal ions, enabling the synthesis of a series of crystal-size TaS2 molecular superlattices.

Abstract:1T-TaS2 has attracted much attention recently due to its abundant charge density wave phases. In this work, high-quality two-dimensional 1T-TaS2 crystals were successfully synthesized by a chemical vapor deposition method with controllable layer numbers, confirmed by the structural characterization. Based on the as-grown samples, their thickness-dependency nearly commensurate charge density wave/commensurate charge density wave phase transitions was revealed by the combination of the temperature-dependent resistance measurements and Raman spectra. The phase transition temperature increased with increasing thickness, but no apparent phase transition was found on the 2~3 nm thick crystals from temperature-dependent Raman spectra. The transition hysteresis loops due to temperature-dependent resistance changes of 1T-TaS2 can be used for memory devices and oscillators, making 1T-TaS2 a promising material for various electronic applications.

Abstract:In van der Waals heterostructures (vdWHs), the manipulation of interlayer stacking/coupling allows for the construction of customizable quantum systems exhibiting exotic physics. An illustrative example is the diverse range of states of matter achieved through varying the proximity coupling between two-dimensional (2D) quantum spin liquid (QSL) and superconductors within the TaS2 family. This study presents a demonstration of the intertwined physics of spontaneous rotational symmetry breaking, hidden magnetism, and Ising superconductivity in the three-fold rotationally symmetric, non-magnetic natural vdWHs 6R-TaS2. A distinctive phase emerges in 6R-TaS2 below a characteristic temperature (T*) of approximately 30 K, which is characterized by a remarkable set of features, including a giant extrinsic anomalous Hall effect (AHE), Kondo screening, magnetic field-tunable thermal hysteresis, and nematic magneto-resistance. At lower temperatures, a coexistence of nematicity and Kondo screening with Ising superconductivity is observed, providing compelling evidence of hidden magnetism within a superconductor. This research not only sheds light on unexpected emergent physics resulting from the coupling of itinerant electrons and localized/correlated electrons in natural vdWHs but also emphasizes the potential for tailoring exotic quantum states through the manipulation of interlayer interactions.

Two-dimensional superconductivity and anomalous vortex dissipation in newly-discovered transition metal dichalcogenide-based superlattices

Abstract:Properties of layered superconductors can vary drastically when thinned down from bulk to monolayer, owing to the reduced dimensionality and weakened interlayer coupling. In transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), the inherent symmetry breaking effect in atomically thin crystals prompts novel states of matter, such as Ising superconductivity with an extraordinary in-plane upper critical field. Here, we demonstrate that two-dimensional (2D) superconductivity resembling those in atomic layers but with more fascinating behaviours can be realized in the bulk crystals of two new TMD-based superconductors Ba0.75ClTaS2 and Ba0.75ClTaSe2. They comprise an alternating stack of H-type TMD layers and Ba-Cl layers. In both materials, intrinsic 2D superconductivity develops below a Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition. The upper critical field along ab plane exceeds the Pauli limit (Hp); in particular, Ba0.75ClTaSe2 exhibits an extremely high in plane Hc2 (14Hp) and a colossal superconducting anisotropy of 150. Moreover, the temperature-field phase diagram of Ba0.75ClTaSe2 under an in-plane magnetic field contains a large phase regime of vortex dissipation, which can be ascribed to the Josephson vortex motion, signifying an unprecedentedly strong fluctuation effect in TMD-based superconductors. Our results provide a new path towards the establishment of 2D superconductivity and novel exotic quantum phases in bulk crystals of TMD-based superconductors.
