Abstract:A description is furnished for automorphisms of prime order and subgraphs of their fixed points in distance-regular graphs with intersection arrays {50, 42, 1; 1, 2, 50} and {50, 42, 9; 1, 2, 42}. It is proved that these graphs cannot be vertex-transitive.

Abstract:In this paper we investigate orders, longest cycles and the number of cycles of automorphisms of finite vertex-transitive graphs. In particular, we show that the order of every automorphism of a connected vertex-transitive graph with n vertices and of valence d, d ≤ 4 , is at most c d n where c 3 = 1 and c 4 = 9 . Whether such a constant c d exists for valencies larger than 4 remains an unanswered question. Further, we prove that every automorphism g of a finite connected 3-valent vertex-transitive graph Γ, Γ ≇ K 3 , 3 , has a regular orbit, that is, an orbit of 〈 g 〉 of length equal to the order of g. Moreover, we prove that in this case either Γ belongs to a well understood family of exceptional graphs or at least 5/12 of the vertices of Γ belong to a regular orbit of g. Finally, we give an upper bound on the number of orbits of a cyclic group of automorphisms C of a connected 3-valent vertex-transitive graph Γ in terms of the number of vertices of Γ and the length of a longest orbit of C.

Abstract:A graph is edge-transitive if its automorphism group acts transitively on the edge set. In this paper, we investigate the automorphism groups of edge-transitive graphs of odd order and twice prime valency. Let $\Gamma$ be a connected graph of odd order and twice prime valency, and let $G$ be a subgroup of the automorphism group of $\Ga$. In the case where $G$ acts transitively on the edges and quasiprimitively on the vertices of $\Ga$, we prove that either $G$ is almost simple or $G$ is a primitive group of affine type. If further $G$ is an almost simple primitive group then, with two exceptions, the socle of $G$ acts transitively on the edges of $\Gamma$.

On the automorphism group of a putative Conway 99-graph

Abstract:Let $\Gamma$ be a {Conway 99-graph}, that is, a strongly regular graph with parameters $(99,14,1,2)$. In Makhnev and Minakova (On automorphisms of strongly regular graphs with parameters $\lambda =1$, $\mu= 2$, Discrete Math.\ Appl.\ 14 (2) (2004) 201-210), the authors prove that the automorphism group $G$ of $\Gamma$ must have order dividing $2\cdot 3^3\cdot 7\cdot 11$. They further show that if $|G|$ is divisible by $2$ then $|G|$ must divide $42$. In the present paper, we refine these results by proving that divisibility by $7$ implies $G \cong\mathbb Z_7$. As a consequence, divisibility by $2$ implies $|G|$ divides $6$, \ie $G$ is isomorphic to one of $\mathbb Z_2, \mathbb Z_6, S_3$.

Abstract:Let $G=(V,E)$ be a graph with the vertex-set $V$ and the edge-set $E$. Let $N(v)$ denote the set of neighbors of the vertex $v$ of $G.$ The graph $G$ is called $ irreducible $ whenever for every $v,w \in V$ if $v \neq w$, then $N(v)\neq N(w).$ In this paper, we present a method for finding automorphism groups of connected bipartite irreducible graphs. Then, by our method, we determine automorphism groups of some classes of connected bipartite irreducible graphs, including a class of graphs which are derived from Grassmann graphs. Let $a_0$ be a fixed positive integer. We show that if $G$ is a connected non-bipartite irreducible graph such that $c(v,w)=|N(v)\cap N(w)|=a_0$ when $v,w$ are adjacent, whereas $c(v,w) \neq a_0$, when $v,w$ are not adjacent, then $G$ is a $stable$ graph, that is, the automorphism group of the bipartite double cover of $G$ is isomorphic with the group $Aut(G) \times \mathbb{Z}_2$. Finally, we show that the Johnson graph $J(n,k)$ is a stable graph.

Abstract:It is known that the canonical double cover of any connected nonbipartite graph have an automorphism group of the form $H \rtimes \mathbb{Z}_2$, where $H$ is the set of automorphism which preserve bipartite parts. We construct connected nonbipartite and vertex determining graphs whose canonical double covers have auromorphisms group isomorphic to any semisimple product of $\mathbb{Z}_2$ with any abstract group $H$. Later we show, that the canonical double cover of any asymmetric graph have abelian automorphisms group of odd order. The above construction provides an example of asymmetric graph for any such group. By modifying the aforementioned construction we obtain graphs which have any possible number and type of graphs with isomorphic double covers.

Abstract:An updated proof of a 1933 theorem of Goeritz, exhibiting a finite set of generators for the group of automorphisms of the 3-sphere that preserve a genus two Heegaard splitting. The group is analyzed via its action on a certain connected 2-complex. (The analogous problem for higher genus Heegaard splittings appears to remain unresolved.)

Abstract:Let G be a finite nonabelian simple group and let Gamma be a connected undirected Cayley graph for G. The possible structures for the full automorphism group AutGamma are specified. Then, for certain finite simple groups G, a sufficient condition is given under which G is a normal subgroup of AutGamma. Finally, as an application of these results, several new half-transitive graphs are constructed. Some of these involve the sporadic simple groups G J(1), J(4), Ly and BM, while others fall into two infinite families and involve the Ree simple groups and alternating groups. The two infinite families contain examples of half-transitive graphs of arbitrarily large valency.

Abstract:The monography examines the problem of constructing a group of automorphisms of a graph. A graph automorphism is a mapping of a set of vertices onto itself that preserves adjacency. The set of such automorphisms forms a vertex group of a graph or simply a graph group. The basis for constructing a group of graph automorphisms is the concept of orbit. The construction of an orbit is closely related to the quantitative assessment of a vertex or edge of a graph, called weight. To determine the weight of an element, graph invariants built on the spectrum of edge cuts and the spectrum of edge cycles are used. The weight of the graph elements allows identifying generating cycles and forming orbits. Examples are given of constructing a group of automorphisms for some types of graphs.

Abstract:The main result of this paper is that, if $\Gamma$ is a finite connected $4$-valent arc-transitive graph, then either $\Gamma$ is part of a well-understood family of graphs, or every non-identity automorphism of $\Gamma$ fixes at most $1/3$ of the vertices. As a corollary, we get a similar result for $3$-valent vertex-transitive graphs. Based on these results we propose a conjecture on the number of fixed points of non-identity automorphisms of vertex-transitive graphs of bounded valency.

Abstract:In 1982, Durnberger proved that every connected Cayley graph of a finite group with a commutator subgroup of prime order contains a hamiltonian cycle. In this paper, we extend this result to the infinite case. Additionally, we generalize this result to a broader class of infinite graphs $X$, where the automorphism group of $X$ contains a transitive subgroup $G$ with a cyclic commutator subgroup of prime order.

Abstract:Let $S$ be a non-empty finite set. A flag of $S$ is a set $f$ of non-empty proper subsets of $S$ such that $X\subseteq Y$ or $Y\subseteq X$ for all $X,Y\in f$. The set $\{|X|:X\in f\}$ is called the type of $f$. Two flags $f$ and $f'$ are in general position with respect to $S$ if $X\cap Y=\emptyset$ or $X\cup Y=S$ for all $X\in f$ and $Y\in f'$. For a fixed type $T$, Klaus Metsch defined the general position graph $\Gamma(S,T)$ whose vertices are the flags of $S$ of type $T$ with two vertices being adjacent when the corresponding flags are in general position. In this paper, we characterize the full automorphism groups of $\Gamma(S,T)$ in the case that $|T|=2$. In particular, we solve an open problem proposed by Klaus Metsch.

Abstract:The Terwilliger algebras of asymmetric association schemes of rank $3$, whose nonidentity relations correspond to doubly regular tournaments, are shown to have thin irreducible modules, and to always be of dimension $4k+9$ for some positive integer $k$. It is determined that asymmetric rank $3$ association schemes of order up to $23$ are determined up to combinatorial isomorphism by the list of their complex Terwilliger algebras at each vertex, but this no longer true at order $27$. To distinguish order $27$ asymmetric rank $3$ association schemes, it is shown using computer calculations that the list of rational Terwilliger algebras at each vertex will suffice.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the automorphism groups of the Cayley graph with respect to the Coxeter generators and the Davis complex of an arbitrary Coxeter group. We determine for which Coxeter groups these automorphism groups are discrete. In the case where they are discrete, we express them as semidirect products of two obvious families of automorphisms. This extends a result of Haglund and Paulin.

Abstract:An odd Coxeter group $W$ is one which admits a Coxeter system $(W,S)$ for which all the exponents $m_{ij}$ are either odd or infinity. The paper investigates the family of odd Coxeter groups whose associated labeled graphs $\mathcal{V}_{(W,S)}$ are trees. It is known that two Coxeter groups in this family are isomorphic if and only if they admit Coxeter systems having the same rank and the same multiset of finite exponents. In particular, each group in this family is isomorphic to a group that admits a Coxeter system whose associated labeled graph is a star shaped tree. We give the complete description of the automorphism group of this group, and derive a sufficient condition for the splitting of the automorphism group as a semi-direct product of the inner and the outer automorphism groups. As applications, we prove that Coxeter groups in this family satisfy the $R_\infty$-property and are (co)-Hopfian. We compare structural properties, automorphism groups, $\R_\infty$-property and (co)-Hopfianity of a special odd Coxeter group whose only finite exponent is three with the braid group and the twin group.

We will prove that (1) if G is point imprimitive, then v = 21, and G ≤ Z 21 : Z 6 ; (2) if G is point primitive, then G ≤ AΓL (1,v) and v = p a , where p is a prime number with p ≡ 21 (mod 40), and a an odd integer.

Abstract:For any abstract subfactor planar algebra $P$, there exists a finite index extremal subfactor $M_0 \subset M_1$ with $P$ as its standard invariant. In this paper, we classify the automorphism group of a bipartite graph planar algebra, and obtain subfactor planar subalgebras by taking fixed points under groups of automorphisms. This construction provides both new examples of subfactors and new descriptions of the planar algebras of previously known examples.
