Abstract:A graph is edge-transitive if its automorphism group acts transitively on the edge set. In this paper, we investigate the automorphism groups of edge-transitive graphs of odd order and twice prime valency. Let $\Gamma$ be a connected graph of odd order and twice prime valency, and let $G$ be a subgroup of the automorphism group of $\Ga$. In the case where $G$ acts transitively on the edges and quasiprimitively on the vertices of $\Ga$, we prove that either $G$ is almost simple or $G$ is a primitive group of affine type. If further $G$ is an almost simple primitive group then, with two exceptions, the socle of $G$ acts transitively on the edges of $\Gamma$.

Abstract:A graph $\Ga=(V,E)$ is called a Cayley graph of some group $T$ if the automorphism group $\Aut(\Ga)$ contains a subgroup $T$ which acts on regularly on $V$. If the subgroup $T$ is normal in $\Aut(\Ga)$ then $\Ga$ is called a normal Cayley graph of $T$. Let $r$ be an odd prime. Fang et al. \cite{FMW} proved that, with a finite number of exceptions for finite simple group $T$, every connected symmetric Cayley graph of $T$ of valency $r$ is normal. In this paper, employing maximal factorizations of finite almost simple groups, we work out a possible list of those exceptions for $T$.

Abstract: It is well-known that translation schemes on prime number of vertices are exactly the cyclotomic schemes. In this current paper, we show that there are no nonsymmetric primitive translation schemes on prime square vertices with at most four classes. On the other hand, we find new non-symmetric four- and five-class association schemes from cyclotomy as fission schemes of certain symmetric three-class schemes. Moreover, we provide an affirmative answer to the following question raised by Song \cite{song_2}: Are there any other two-class primitive schemes that admit symmetrizable fission schemes besides the cyclotomic scheme of index 2 for $q \equiv5 \pmod{8}$? To be more specific, we show that a certain two-class primitive scheme in the finite field $\F_{37^3}$ constructed by Feng and Xiang in \cite{fx} admits a four-class fission scheme. This fission scheme is realized as a fusion scheme of the cyclotomic scheme of index 28.

Abstract:An edge-transitive graph $\varGamma $ is called alternatively connected if a subgroup G of the automorphism group of $\varGamma $ has two orbits on the arc set of $\varGamma $, and there exists an alternative walk (with respect to a given G-orbit on arcs) between every pair of vertices of $\varGamma $. Employing the standard double covers of digraphs, we give some basic properties of alternatively connected edge-transitive graphs. The main result of this paper is a reduction result on alternatively connected edge-transitive graphs of square-free order. As an application of this result, we give a characterization for alternatively connected edge-transitive graphs of square-free order and valency 6. It is proved that such a graph is either a circulant or constructed from $\mathrm{PSL}(2,p)$.

Abstract:It is well-known that translation schemes of prime order are exactly the cyclotomic schemes. In this paper, we show that there do not exist any two-, three-, or four-class nonsymmetric primitive translation schemes of prime square order. On the other hand, we find new nonsymmetric four- and five-class association schemes from cyclotomy as fission schemes of certain symmetric three-class association schemes. Moreover, we provide an affirmative answer to the following question raised by Song (J Algebr Comb 5:47–55, 1996): are there any other two-class primitive association schemes that admit symmetrizable fission schemes besides the cyclotomic scheme of index 2 for $q \equiv 5 \hbox { (mod 8)}$? To be more specific, we show that a certain two-class primitive association scheme in the finite field ${\mathbb F}_{37^3}$ constructed by Feng and Xiang (J Comb Theory Ser A 119:245–256, 2012) admits a four-class fission scheme. This fission scheme is realized as a fusion scheme of the cyclotomic scheme of index 28.

Abstract:This paper investigates the automorphism group of a connected and undirected G-symmetric graph Γ where G is an almost simple group with socle T. First we prove that, for an arbitrary subgroup M of AutΓ containing G, either T is normal in M or T is a subgroup of the alternating group Ak of degree k=|Mα:Tα|−|NM(T):T|. Then we describe the structure of the full automorphism group of G-locally primitive graphs of valency d, where d≤20 or is a prime. Finally, as one of the applications of our results, we determine the structure of the automorphism group AutΓ for cubic symmetric graph Γ admitting a finite almost simple group.

Abstract:Algebra Colloquium, Volume 31, Issue 02, Page 199-208, June 2024. A simple undirected regular graph is said to be semisymmetric if it is edge-transitive but not vertex-transitive. For a semisymmetric graph [math] of order [math], [math] a prime, it is well known that [math] is bipartite with two biparts having equal size. The complete classification of such graphs has been given for the full automorphism group [math] acting unfaithfully on at least one bipart of [math], which shows that there is only one infinite family of such graphs with valency [math]. The graphs of this kind have been determined when [math] acts faithfully and primitively on at least one bipart of [math], and thus there is only one remaining case for classifying such graphs of valency [math], [math] acting faithfully and imprimitively on both biparts of [math], which is dealt with in this paper. As a result, there is only one infinite family of semisymmetric graphs of order [math] with valency [math].

Abstract:Let $\Gamma$ be a bipartite graph, and let $\mathrm{Aut}\Gamma$ be the full automorphism group of the graph $\Gamma$. A subgroup $G\leqslant \mathrm{Aut}\Gamma$ is said to be bi-regular on $\Gamma$ if $G$ preserves the bipartition and acts regularly on both parts of $\Gamma$, while the graph $\Gamma$ is called a bi-Cayley graph of $G$ in this case. A subgroup $X\leqslant \mathrm{Aut} \Gamma$ is said to be bi-quasiprimitive on $\Gamma$ if the bipartition-preserving subgroup of $X$ is a quasiprimitive group on each part of $\Gamma$. In this paper, a characterization is given for the connected bi-Cayley graphs on nonabelian simple groups which have prime valency and admit bi-quasiprimitive groups.

Abstract:A vertex-transitive graph is called 2-distance-primitive if the vertex stabilizer is primitive on both the first step and the second step neighborhoods. This paper first shows that there are infinitely many 2-distance-primitive graphs with unbounded large valency and diameter. Then a classification is given of the 2-distance-primitive graphs with valency at most 9. Finally, we determine all the 2-distance-primitive graphs with the order of a product of two primes.

Abstract:Let Gamma be a graph and let G be a subgroup of automorphisms of Gamma. Then G is said to be locally primitive on Gamma if, for each vertex upsilon, the stabilizer G(upsilon) induces a primitive group of permutations on the set of vertices adjacent to upsilon. This paper investigates pairs (Gamma, G) for which G is locally primitive on Gamma, G is an almost simple group (that is, L less than or equal to G less than or equal to Aut(L) for some nonabelian simple group L), and the simple socle L is transitive on vertices. Each such graph is a cover of a possibly smaller graph <(Gamma)over tilde> on which G is also locally primitive, and for which in addition Aut <(Gamma)over tilde> is quasiprimitive on vertices (that is, every nontrivial normal subgroup of Aut <(Gamma)over tilde> is vertex-transitive). it is proved that Aut <(Gamma)over tilde> is also an almost simple group. Tn the general case in which Aut Gamma is not quasiprimitive on vertices, we show that either every intransitive minimal normal subgroup of Aut Gamma centralizes L, or L is of Lie type and Aut Gamma involves an explicitly known same characteristic module for L. Abstract:Let G be a finite nonabelian simple group and let Gamma be a connected undirected Cayley graph for G. The possible structures for the full automorphism group AutGamma are specified. Then, for certain finite simple groups G, a sufficient condition is given under which G is a normal subgroup of AutGamma. Finally, as an application of these results, several new half-transitive graphs are constructed. Some of these involve the sporadic simple groups G J(1), J(4), Ly and BM, while others fall into two infinite families and involve the Ree simple groups and alternating groups. The two infinite families contain examples of half-transitive graphs of arbitrarily large valency.
