Abstract:The surface shape of wet channels for evaporative water devices in cooling, dehumidification, and desalination is critical for efficiency and energy savings, so it should be selected carefully. Therefore, this study explores how the surface shape influences the heat and mass transfer mechanism in the wet duct of indirect evaporative coolers. Consequently, the influence of three various surface shapes (flat, semi-circular, and square shape surfaces) on how the water film is formed, and then its influence on the transfer of heat and mass, as well as the effect of air velocity and water membrane, was investigated using CFD Fluent software. The results showed that the complex surface results in a high air velocity in the flow direction than the simplified surfaces, leading to a more turbulent flow and an increased evaporation rate. As a consequence, it was revealed that the square surface has a high velocity of 0.85 m/s, whereas the flat surface has a velocity of 0.7 m/s under the same working conditions, and that this difference leads to an increase in the evaporation rate, which can reach 0.0175 kg/kg. As for temperature, it was found that the flat surface cooled the air to lower temperatures due to the relatively low velocity, which gives the air stream enough time to exchange heat. This study helps in designing evaporative devices, whether they work in the field of cooling or water desalination, by choosing the appropriate shape of the exchanger surface to improve its performance.
