Abstract:This paper describes the effects of the addition of SiC on the hydrogen storage properties of MgH2 synthesized by ball milling. Transmission electron microscope images confirm that ultra-fine SiC particles are uniformly dispersed within the MgH2 matrix. It was found that the hydrogen absorption/desorption kinetics of MgH2 can be improved by the addition of a small amount of SiC (5wt%). Higher level doping introduces negative effects, such as lower capacity, slower absorption/desorption rates, and higher hysteresis, compared to samples with lower SiC doping levels. It is believed that SiC can help to break up particles, reduce the grain size, and improve the surface area of MgH2, however, large amounts of SiC could also block the hydrogen diffusion path to some extent, which degrades the hydrogen absorption/desorption performance.

Abstract:Transition metal nanoparticles have shown great catalytic effect on MgH2, yet excellent cyclic stability can be attached due to the addition of carbon nanotubes. In this paper, MgH2 + 10 wt% Zr0.4Ti0.6Co/5 wt% Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) composite is designed to investigate the synergistic modification of Zr0.4Ti0.6Co nanosheets and carbon nanotubes on the hydrogen storage performance of MgH2. Compared with pure MgH2, the initial hydrogen release temperature of MgH2 + 10 wt% Zr0.4Ti0.6Co /5 wt% CNTs composite decreases to 180 degrees C and the composite can quickly release 90% H-2 within 10 min at 300 degrees C. In addition, the completely dehydrogenated sample can absorb 3.51 wt% H-2 within 20 min under 3 Mpa hydrogen pressure at 125 degrees C. Ulteriorly, the activation energy values of dehydrogenation and rehydrogenation of MgH2 decrease to 70.5 +/- 7.8 kJ/mol and 35.8 +/- 3.8 kJ/mol on account of the presence of 10 wt% Zr0.4Ti0.6Co/5 wt% CNTs, which reasonably explains the remarkable reduction of the temperature for hydrogen sorption. Furthermore, the MgH2 + 10 wt% Zr0.4Ti0.6Co/5 wt% CNTs composite shows excellent cycling performance, indicative of potential application in practical hydrogen storage in the nearest future.
Effects of SiC Nanoparticles with and Without Ni on the Hydrogen Storage Properties of MgH2

Abstract:In this work, MgH2–SiC–Ni was prepared by magneto-mechanical milling in hydrogen atmosphere. Scanning electron microscope mapping images showed a homogeneous dispersion of both Ni and SiC among MgH2 particles. Based on the differential scanning calorimetry traces, the temperature of desorption is reduced by doping MgH2 with SiC and Ni. Hydrogen absorption/desorption behaviour of the samples was investigated by Sievert's method at 300°C, and the results showed that both capacity and kinetics were improved by adding SiC and Ni. The hydrogen desorption kinetic investigation indicated that for pure MgH2, the rate-determining step is surface controlled and recombination, while for the MgH2–SiC–Ni sample it is controlled as described by the Johnson–Mehl–Avrami 3D model (JMA 3D).
Carbon composite support improving catalytic effect of NbC nanoparticles on the low-temperature hydrogen storage performance of MgH2

Abstract:Ultrafine carbon-based transition metal compounds have been widely investigated as efficient catalysts for enhancing the hydrogen storage performance of magnesium hydride. In this work, the carbon ther-mal shock method is applied to synthesize the ultrafine carbon-encapsulated NbC nanoparticles with an average grain size of 17.3 nm. The MgH2 -10 wt% NbC/C composites show excellent low-temperature hy-drogen storage performance with the onset dehydrogenation temperature of 196.1 degrees C, which is 92.2 degrees C and 98 degrees C lower than that of MgH2 -10 wt% NbC and undoped MgH2, respectively. Specifically, MgH2 -10 wt% NbC/C can absorb 6.71 wt% H2 at 100 degrees C within 30 min around and retain almost 100% reversible hydrogen desorption capacity after 10 cycles. For the catalytic mechanism, the electron transfer process between multi-valence Nb cations of in-situ formed NbHx and Mg, H atoms can greatly improve the cyclic de/rehydrogenation kinetics of MgH2-NbC/C. Besides, the enhancement of dehydrogenation kinetics can also be ascribed to MgH2 particle refinement by NbC nanoparticles, and destabilization of the Mg-H bond caused by carbon substrate. This investigation not only proves that carbon-encapsulated NbC nanoparti-cles can greatly enhance the hydrogen storage performance of MgH2 but provides an idea of preparing carbon-based transition metal carbides as effective catalysts for magnesium-based hydrogen storage ma-terials.(c) 2023 Published by Elsevier Ltd on behalf of The editorial office of Journal of Materials Science & Technology.

Abstract:The Mg– nanocomposite has been synthesized by a reactive gas evaporation method to simultaneously achieve carbon nanoconfinement and add Nb nanocatalyst. The size of Mg particles is range from 14 to 26 nm with average size of 20 nm. The small Nb catalyst about 5 nm are decorated in Mg particles, and the proportion of Nb is about 8 wt%. The amorphous carbon layer with thickness of 2 nm is coated on the surface of Mg–Nb nanocomposite. The nanocomposite can absorb 6.4 wt% H2 and desorb 6.3 wt% H2 in 5 min at 673 K. At 573 K, it can also uptake 5.8 wt% H2 in 10 min and release 4.8 wt% H2 in 60 min. The Ea for hydrogenation and dehydrogenation are reduced to 60.2 and 59.7 kJ mol−1, respectively. Carbon nanoconfinement and Nb nanocatalyst effectively improve the hydrogen sorption kinetic of Mg.

Abstract:The nanocrystalline Mg+xwt% LaMg2Ni (x=0, 5, 10, 20, 30) composites were prepared by reactive ball-milling, their microstructure and hydrogen storage characteristics were investigated. The results show that the addition of LaMg2Ni improves the hydriding rate and capacity. The hydriding capacity of the Mg+xwt% LaMg2Ni (x=5, 10, 20, 30) composites are all above 4.1wt% at 120°C and above 4.3wt% at 180°C within 6000s. Moreover, the addition of LaMg2Ni also improves the dehydriding performance of the composites. The main reason for the improvement of hydriding/dehydriding properties investigated by XRD and SEM shows that the synergistic effect among the multiphase nanocrystalline Mg-based structures make hydrogen easily absorbed/desorbed on the interface of the matrix.
Hybrid of Bulk NbC and Layered Nb4C3 MXene for Tailoring Hydrogen Storage Kinetics and Reversibility of Li-Mg-B-H Composite: an Experimental and Theoretical Study

Abstract:The Li -Mg -B -H composite (2LiBH 4 + MgH 2 ) is acknowledged as a promising material for hydrogen storage due to its large hydrogen capacity (11.4 wt.%). However, the sluggish kinetics and poor reversibility make it difficult to be practically used. In this work, the hydrogen storage performances of 2LiBH 4 + MgH 2 have been significantly improved by a hybrid of bulk NbC and layered Nb 4 C 3 MXene (denoted as "Nb- C"). The 2LiBH 4 + MgH 2 + 6 wt.% Nb-C can release 8.5 wt.% H 2 within 30 min at 400 degrees C and the dehydrogenated composite can absorb 9.3 wt.% H 2 within 30 min at 350 degrees C and 7.5 MPa H 2 . The reversible dehydrogenation capacity maintains at 8.4 wt.% after 24 cycles, with a capacity retention ratio of 95.4 %. By contrast, the undoped 2LiBH 4 + MgH 2 suffers from serious capacity degradation, with the capacity decreased dramatically to 3.5 wt.% after 3 cycles. Microstructural studies revealed that the doped composite has uniform particle and elemental distributions and possesses various multiphase interfaces of LiH/MgB 2 /NbC/Nb 4 C 3 , which is beneficial to hydrogen diffusion during the hydrogen uptake and release process. Theoretical studies by first principle calculation presented an extended bond length of the Mg-H and B-H bonds in the 2LiBH 4 + MgH 2 + NbC system, which may also explain the improved hydrogen storage properties of 2LiBH 4 + MgH 2 by addition of Nb-C. This work provides new insights into the role of transition metal carbides in regulating the Li-Mg-B-H hydrogen storage materials both experimentally and theoretically. Hydrogen desorption properties of the MgH2-AlH3 composites

Abstract:In this work, the hydrogen desorption properties of the novel Mg-Al-H hydrogen storage composites prepared by ball-milling the as-received magnesium hydride (MgH2) and the as-prepared aluminum hydride (AlH3) with different molar ratios (1:1, 1:0.5, and 1:0.25) are investigated systematically. Nonisothermal desorption measurements show that more than 7.51 wt % of hydrogen is released from the Mg-Al-H composites when they are heated from room temperature to 500 degrees C. Thermal analysis by differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) and hydrogen desorption spectrum by mass spectrometer (MS-H-2) are used synchronously to study the desorption process of the Mg-Al-H. The onset hydrogen desorption temperature of MgH2 in the MgH2 + AlH3 composite is dramatically reduced from 320 degrees C for the pure MgH2 to below 252 degrees C. The DSC/MS-H-2 and the X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses show that the desorption of MgH2 in the Mg-Al-H composite is composed of two steps with the reaction between MgH2 and Al forming Mg17Al12 as the first step and the self-decomposition of the residual MgH2 as the second step. Isothermal desorptions show that the desorption kinetics of the MgH2 in the Mg-Al-H composite is significantly improved. The apparent activation energy for the desorption of MgH2 in the MgH2 + 0.25AlH(3) is reduced to 144.6 kJ/mol, which contributes to the improvement in the desorption kinetics of MgH2. The Johnson-Mehl-Avrami (JMA) kinetic studies indicate that the desorption kinetic model of MgH2 in the Mg-Al-H composite is different from the pure MgH2. Concerning the reversibility, under the conditions of 300 degrees C and 5 MPa H-2, MgH2 in the Mg-Al-H composite is almost fully recovered after absorption for 5 h while it is partially recovered for the pure MgH2. Among the samples studied, the MgH2 + 0.25AlH(3) composite exhibits the highest reversible hydrogen storage capacity of 6.10 wt % (H/M).
Effects of Nano-Composites (feb, FeB/CNTs) on Hydrogen Storage Properties of MgH2

Abstract:The carbon nanotubes (CNTs), the as-prepared FeB nanoparticles and the CNTs decorated with FeB nanoparticles (denoted as FeB/CNTs) are introduced respectively into MgH2 system by wet milling with cyclohexane (CYH), and results show that wet milling with CYH and adding dopants (CNTs, FeB or FeB/CNTs) both improve the hydrogen storage properties of MgH2. The MgH2-10 wt% FeB/CNTs (CYH) composite shows the best properties. Its onset dehydrogenation temperature is 196 degrees C, which is 114 degrees C lower than that of the MgH2 (without CYH). Furthermore, the hydrogen desorption activation energy of MgH2-10 wt% FeB/CNTs (CYH) is reduced to 89.7 kJ/mol. The composite starts to absorb hydrogen at temperature as low as 39 degrees C, and can take up 6.2 wt% of H-2 at 150 degrees C and 5 MPa H-2 within 10 min. The hydrogen sorption cycling measurements indicate that the kinetics of the MgH2-10 wt% FeB/CNTs (CYH) composite keeps almost stable within 20 cycles, and the hydrogen storage capacity remains at 6.02 wt% (93% of the initial capacity) after 20 cycles. It is believed that the in-situ formed Fe and B as the active species and the good thermal conductivity of CNTs help enhance the hydrogen storage properties of the MgH2.

Abstract:Novel porous hollow carbon nanospheres (HCNS) have been synthesized and utilized as scaffold for LiBH4-Mg(BH4)(2) eutectic borohydride (LMBH). Large loading amounts of LMBH (33, 50 and 67 wt%) have been melt-infiltrated into HCNS, and the significantly improved dehydrogenation properties have been discovered. The LMBH@HCNS composites not only exhibit high actual dehydrogenation amounts and fast hydrogen desorption rates, but also an increased reversible hydrogen storage capacities after three cycles without obvious degradation. Further structural tests have revealed that the over-infiltrated LMBH covering the spherical surface of HCNS could also contribute to the improved hydrogen storage behaviors, due to a strong interfacial adhesion effect that avoid LMBH from aggregation during de/rehydrogenation cycles. Hydrogen Storage Properties of Nano-Cob/cnts Catalyzed MgH2

Abstract:With CoCl2, NaBH4 and CNTs as the starting materials, the CoB/CNTs nanocomposites were successfully prepared and used as catalysts to improve the hydrogen storage properties of MgH2. CoB/CNTs catalysts were characterized by BET, SEM, and XRD. The results show that CoB/CNTs possesses high specific surface area. MgH2 doped with 10 wt% CoB/CNTs (MgH2+10 wt% CoB/CNTs) starts to release hydrogen at about 214 degrees C, and reaches a dehydrogenation peak at about 271 degrees C. These temperatures are 166 degrees C and 135 degrees C lower than that of commercial MgH2. The dehydriding/rehydriding kinetics of MgH2 are also remarkably improved by addition of CoB/CNTs. MgH2+10 wt% CoB/CNTs exhibits excellent isothermal hydrogen desorption kinetics at 300 degrees C. It can release around 5.5 wt% H-2 within approximately 19 min, and can fully dehydride within 1 h. The maximum dehydridng rate reaches 22.9 wt% H-2/h, which is 572 times faster than that of commercial MgH2. The activation energy of hydrogen desorption measured by Kis-singer plot is estimated to be 89.1 kJ/mol for MgH2+10 wt% CoB/CNTs, which is reduced by 119.4 kJ/mol as compared to commercial MgH2. Moreover, The fully dehydrided MgH2+10 wt% CoB/CNTs product also shows excellent rehydriding properties, it can absorb up to 90% of hydrogen capacity within 20 s at 300 degrees C and 5 MPa H-2. The Hydrogen Storage Properties of MgH2–Fe3S4 Composites

Abstract:We report here a method of synthesizing MgH2-Fe3S4 composite with a series of remarkable hydrogen storage properties. For instance, compared to pure MgH2, three times higher hydrogen absorption weight (3.41 wt.% vs 0.98%) and two times faster hydrogen desorption rate (4.01 wt.% vs 2.32 wt.%) are seen in MgH2-Fe3S4 composite. Furthermore, the dehydrogenation temperature of MgH2 is also found to be reduced by 90 K with the addition of Fe3S4. By studying the reactions between MgH2 and Fe3S4 during the hydrogenation/dehydrogenation process, we found the formation of new phases (Fe and MgS) as well as their coordination play a remarkable effect on improving the hydrogen storage properties of MgH2. Abstract:MgH2 with 10 wt% Ti0.4Mn0.22Cr0.1V0.28 (termed BCC for its body-centered cubic structure) nanocomposite was fabricated by ball milling using different ball-to-powder weight ratios. The X-ray diffraction patterns make it clear that pure Mg powder is partly transformed to MgH2, while by adding the BCC, its hydriding becomes complete. The scanning electron microscope images showed that the BCC particles were uniformly dispersed on the surface of the Mg particles. Differential scanning calorimetry traces of the samples showed that the addition of the BCC obviously decreases the desorption temperature, and an additional decrease is observed from increasing the ball-to-powder weight ratio. The hydriding/dehydriding and the pressure-composition isotherm curves indicate significant improvement in the absorption/desorption kinetics and the hydrogen storage capacity of MgH2 from both adding the BCC and increasing the ball-to-powder weight ratio. The results indicate that the BCC acts as a medium that facilitates hydrogen absorption during hydrogenation on Mg, thus improving hydrogen storage capacity and absorption/desorption kinetics.

Abstract:A new YMg4Cu intermetallic with orthorhombic TbMg4Cu type structure was prepared by induction melting and subsequent heating treatment. Hydrogenation of YMg4Cu resulted in phase segregation into the YH3-MgH2-MgCu2 nanocomposite. The phase components, microstructure and hydrogen ab/de-sorption kinetics of Y-Mg-Cu-H nanocomposite were carefully investigated. The in-situ formed Y-Mg-Cu-H nanocomposite can absorbed 3.0 wt% hydrogen at 523 K, absorbed 2.6 wt% hydrogen at 373 K under 4 MPa H2 and desorbed 3.0 wt% hydrogen under an initial hydrogen pressure of 0.001 bar at 550 K. The PCT curves show two plateaus corresponding to the formation of Mg and Mg2Cu, and the hydrogen desorption activation energy is −72.3 and −76.8 kJ/mol H2, respectively. Furthermore, the in-situ formed Mg/MgH2, Mg2Cu/MgH2+MgCu2 matrix and YH2/YH3 nanocatalysts is crucial to maintain the high effective capacity of this nanocomposites.

Abstract:Nanocomposite Mg-3Ni-2MnO-0.25CNTs was made by mechanical ball milling method under hydrogen pressure of 0.5MPa. The nanocomposite has very high Absorption hydrogen capacity and remarkable kinetic properties in hydriding /dehydriding process, for example the nanocomposite can Absorb 7.0% hydrogen in 100s at 200℃ under of hydrogen pressure of 2.0MPa. The grain of Mg-based hydrogen storage materials with CNTs is much smaller in ball milling process than that of the materials without CNTs. The composites has potential application in the future.

Abstract:Various Mg/carbon and Mg/noncarbon composite systems were prepared by mechanical milling and their hydrogen storage behaviors were investigated. It was found that all the carbon additives exhibited prominent advantage over the noncarbon additives, such as BN nanotubes (BNNTs) or asbestos in improving the hydrogen capacity and dehydriding/hydriding kinetics of Mg. And among the various carbon additives, purified single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) exhibited the most prominent “catalytic” effect on the hydrogen storage properties of Mg. The hydrogen capacities of all Mg/C composites at 573K reached more than 6.2wt.% within 10min, about 1.5wt.% higher than that of pure MgH2 at the identical operation conditions. Under certain operation temperatures, H-absorption/desorption rates of Mg/carbon systems were over one order of magnitude higher than that of pure Mg. Furthermore, the starting temperature of the desorption reaction of MgH2 has been lowered to 60K by adding SWNTs. On the basis of the hydrogen storage behavior and structure/phase investigations, the possible mechanism involved in the property improvement of Mg upon adding carbon materials was discussed.

Abstract:There are few reports on the hydrogen storage behavior study of Mg–Co–H system in the literature, although Mg2CoH5 has a much higher hydrogen capacity than Mg2NiH4. This is due to the great difficulty in the synthesis of Mg2CoH5 and Mg2Co in convenient conditions. Here we successfully synthesized the nanostructured Mg2CoH5 and Mg2Co from Mg and Co nanoparticles prepared by hydrogen plasma–metal reaction method. The reaction mechanism of the synthesis of the Mg–Co–H system was studied. The morphology of the Mg–Co–H system in nanometer scale was observed. The hydrogen absorption curves and the pressure–composition isotherm (P–C–T) properties of the Mg–Co–H system were studied. The van’t Hoff equations and the formation enthalpies and entropies of the produced Mg2CoH5 and Mg3CoH5 were obtained. The results were discussed by comparing with the corresponding ones of Mg–Co–H system by other groups and the ones of nanostructured Mg–H and Mg–Ni–H systems by our group.

Abstract:We reported the structure and the notable hydrogen storage properties of the composites Mg100−xNix (x=5, 11.3, 20, 25) prepared from metallic powder mixtures of magnesium and nickel by the process of HCS+MM, i.e., the hydriding combustion synthesis (HCS) followed by mechanical milling (MM). X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) results demonstrated that mechanical milling led to drastic pulverization and grain refinement of the composite produced by HCS. All the composites with different compositions showed a remarkable decline in dehydriding temperature comparing with that of the hydride mixtures prepared only by HCS. Furthermore, the hydriding rates of these composites were excellent. At 313K the composite Mg80Ni20 showed the highest hydrogen capacity of 2.77wt.% within 600s among these four composites. The Mg95Ni5 showed maximum capacity of 4.88wt.% at 373K and 5.41wt.% at 473K within only 100s. Some factors contributing to the improvement in hydriding rates were discussed in this paper.

Abstract:Solid-state hydrogen storage technology is currently the most economical, reliable, safe, and volumetrically efficient storage method. Unfortunately, whether physically or chemically adsorbed hydrogen storage, a single hydrogen storage material cannot be used as a medium for real-life applications. Among them, magnesium-based alloys have the highest mass density for storing hydrogen among metal-based alloys, while porous materials with physical adsorption properties have become a research hotspot for combining with metal hydrogen storage materials since they have the advantages of high specific surface area, low cost, abundant unsaturated active sites, exceptionally high porosity, adjustable pore size and structure, and tunability of composition. Hence, this paper intends to provide the readers with an overview and elucidation of the catalytic effects and mechanisms of metal-organic frameworks and carbon-based porous materials (activated carbon, carbon nanofibers, and carbon nanotubes) in improving the kinetic and thermodynamic properties of Mg/MgH 2 . The results demonstrated that MOFs and carbon-based porous materials act as catalysts, co-catalysts, inhibitors of grain agglomeration and sintering, and layered scaffolds in Mg/MgH 2 , respectively. The rational design of the Mg/MgH 2 composite system was also prospected by comparing the advantages and disadvantages of these modification methods. To contribute a feasible idea and solution for the production of solid-state hydrogen storage materials with a high capacity for storing hydrogen, low cost, good hydrogen absorption/desorption kinetics, and excellent cycling stability for application in real industry and life.

Abstract:Mg-based hydrogen storage nanocomposites added with carbon nanotubes(CNTs) were prepared by mechanical milling under the atmosphere of hydrogen. The results show that because of their own excellent heat conductivity and good hydrogen storage ability, the carbon nanotubes improve the mass transfer and heat transfer properties of the Mg-based nanocomponents, thus enhancing the kinetic property of hydrogen absorption and desorption of the hydrogen storage nanocomposites, and raising the hydrogen storage capacity. Due to the addition of the carbon nanotubes, the milling stress in the process of preparing the Mg-based nanocomposites is reduced, the components can be closely bonded easily, and the additives can play better catalytic roles.
