Abstract:Based on an approximate adsorption model developed from lattice theory, adsorption data at temperature range 78-173K of hydrogen upon activated carbons were selected to comparatively study the behaviors of hydrogen molecules. The maximum concentration of hydrogen molecules upon the activated carbon surface was determined by the linearization of the model on the adsorption data. The results showed that the maximum surface concentration is lower than that of the liquid hydrogen and decreased with increasing temperature. In the initial adsorption state, the molecular interaction energy among hydrogen molecules is larger on the activated carbon with a small specific surface area and pore volume due to its less space for accumulation of hydrogen molecules. With the increasing of the adsorption amount, the interaction energy among hydrogen molecules adsorbed on the activated carbon having a higher specific surface area and pore volume would increase much rapidly. Conclusions were also drawn that special design of the activated carbon should be made to improve its hydrogen adsorption capacity.
