Abstract:A novel design of monolithically integrated diplexers and triplexers for fiber-to-the-home applications is presented. A bilevel etched asymmetrical 2 x 2 optical coupler is analyzed for efficient couplings of both upstream and downstream signals. The design of the diplexer is extended to a triplexer by adding an etched diffraction grating as an additional downstream demultiplexing element. The total size of the integrated diplexer and triplexer is smaller than 500 microm x 500 microm.

Abstract:A multilayer dual-band coupler, based on the composite right/left-handed (CRLH) folded substrate integrated waveguide (FSIW) transmission line (TL), is proposed and investigated. The characterization of the CRLH FSIW and the coupling method are performed to realize a 3 dB coupler with compact size. For verification, a dual-band coupler operating at 2.4 GHz/3.8 GHz is designed, fabricated and measured. The simulated and measured results are shown reasonable agreements.

Abstract:A triplexer was fabricated based on asymmetric Y branch waveguides Cascade Multimode interference(MMI) for fiber to the home(FTTH).The simulation results of spectral response show that output optical fields are clearly.And the demultiplexing function for download 1 490 nm and 1 550 nm and multiplexing function for upload 1 310 nm were achieved.The simulation results of finited different beam propagation method(FD-BPM) show that insertion loss is less than 1.49 dB;the bandwidths of three response wavelengths meet the demand of ITU.984 completely;the isolation for 1 310 nm is more than 47 dB;the isolation for between 1 490 nm and 1 550 nm is more than 29 dB.

Abstract:Topological edge states have gained significant attention due to their exceptional capability to transmit signals without being affected by defects, which make them promising for applications in microwave and terahertz integrated circuits. In this paper, supercell structures based on topological photonics crystals (TPCs) under dual-edge state are proposed. The energy bands of the proposed supercells is different from those of traditional supercells in that they exhibit forbidden band gaps in addition to edge state and bulk state, facilitating an effective out-of-band rejection filter function through the use of dual-edge state transmission. The robustness of this new structure against bends and fabrication defects has been experimentally validated. To demontrate the feasibility of the proposed structure, we design and realize a topological duplexer which delivers superior transceiver performance and exceptional isolation capabilities. The duplexer is configured with two distinct channels (first channel spanning from 13.20 GHz to 13.43 GHz while the second one ranging from 13.88 GHz to 14.25 GHz), offering isolation of exceeding 27 dB and reaching up to 35 dB. The research findings offer flexible approaches for implementing frequency selection applications, serving as a reference for the future designs and application of integrated package duplexers.
Novel Triplexer Chip Design Combination of an Asymmetric Y Branch Waveguide and A Multimode Interference

Abstract:A novel triplexer chip based on an asymmetric Y branch waveguide and a multimode interference is presented in this paper. Using the novel triplexer chip, a 1310nm channel is multiplexed and 1490nm and 1550nm channels are demultiplexed for FTTH using. The asymmetric Y branch waveguide is used to separate the 1310nm channel from the 1490nm and 1550nm channels. Then the multimode interference is used to demultiplex the 1490nm from 1550nm channel. The simulated spectra show the bandwidths of three response wavelengths are 100nm, 20nm and 10nm, respectively, which can meet the demand of ITU.984 completely. The isolation for 1310nm is more than 48dB, and the isolation between 1490nm and 1550nm is more than 37dB.

Abstract:A high-performance broadband polarization-independent directional coupler is designed by using asymmetric-waveguides configuration on a silicon-on-insulator platform. Through the design of cascaded directional couplers, the coupling characteristics of the light with the orthogonally polarized transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (TM) can be manipulated, so that the coupling strength could be equivalent between TE and TM polarizations within an ultra-broadband. Couplers with 50% splitting ratio are designed and simulated for operating in the wavelength range from 1450 nm to 1650 nm for both polarizations. Within the 100 nm wavelength range from 1500 nm to 1600 nm, the deviations of splitting ratio for TE polarization and TM polarization are ±3.3% and ±6.2%, respectively. And within the 200 nm wavelength range from 1450 nm to 1650 nm, the deviations for TE polarization and TM polarization are ±9.0% and ±7.8%, respectively. The footprint of this polarization-independent directional coupler is only 21 μm × 1.6 μm.
High-efficiency Grating Coupler Based on Fast Directional Optimization and Robust Layout Strategy in 130 Nm CMOS Process.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrated a high-efficiency grating coupler by combining an interleaved etch and apodized structure for fiber-to-chip coupling. The grating coupler was optimized using the fast directional optimization method to achieve apodization. The grating coupler utilized a layout strategy involving an extended mask to avoid alignment errors for a multi-etch structure. The coupling efficiency was measured to be -2.2 dB at a wavelength of 1549 nm with a 3 dB bandwidth of 47 nm. The grating coupler, having no gold reflector, subwavelength index matching structure, or additional material layers, was fabricated using a commercial silicon photonics process with a minimum feature size of 140 nm. This grating coupler design provides a robust and effective coupling scheme and the proposed method can be employed to adopt the design in accordance with standard foundry design rules.

Abstract:Grating coupling is a widely adopted strategy for coupling light into optical waveguides. While this versatile approach benefits both fabrication and alignment, grating couplers are particularly sensitive to both wavelength and polarization. These drawbacks hinder its application in integrated wavelength-division-multiplexing passive optical network (WDM-PON) transceivers, where widely separated wavelength bands are utilized for upstream and downstream signals. In this letter, we propose a three-port grating coupler that enables polarization-independent receiving for the downstream signal from fiber and single-polarized coupling of the upstream signal from chip. Dual-wavelength-band operation is obtained by adding an output port to couple upstream wavelength on existing polarization-splitting grating coupler for downstream wavelength. Peak coupling efficiencies of -2.93 dB and -3.50 dB are achieved for 1266 nm and 1481 nm respectively. This grating coupler design can be adopted in transceivers for fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) networks.

Broadband 2 ×2 3 dB coupler based on ion-exchange in glass

Abstract: In order to meet the demand of fabrication and application of 2 ×N optical power splitters , theoretical and experimental researches were carried out for broadband integrated 2 ×2 3dB couplers.The traditional asymmetric X-junction was improved by using three-dimension beam propagation method , through simulation and design , 2 ×2 3dB couplers with low loss and wide operating bandwidth were obtained .Considering characteristics of asymmetric X-junction, the broadband 2 ×2 3dB coupler was successfully made by using Ag +-Na+ion-exchange in glass .The measurement of light spectrum, using two broadband light source with wavelength respectively in 1260nm ~1360nm and 1460nm ~1600nm, showed that the insertion loss was less than 4.0dB in the broadband range , wavelength response was relatively flat and wavelength insensitive , uniformity was less than 0.5dB.The results prove that , using the improved asymmetric X-junction combined with ion-exchange technique , broadband 2 ×2 3dB couplers with good performance can be fabricated in glass , which lays good foundation for further optimization of the device performance and successful development of its valuable application .

Abstract:The interlayer coupler is one of the critical building blocks for optical interconnect based on multilayer photonic integration to realize light coupling between stacked optical waveguides. However, commonly used coupling strategies, such as evanescent field coupling, usually require a close distance, which could cause undesired interlayer crosstalk. This work presents a novel interlayer slope waveguide coupler based on a multilayer chalcogenide glass photonic platform, enabling light to be directly guided from one layer to another with a large interlayer gap (1 µm), a small footprint (6 × 1 × 0.8 µm3), low propagation loss (0.2 dB at 1520 nm), low device processing temperature, and a high bandwidth, similar to that in a straight waveguide. The proposed interlayer slope waveguide coupler could further promote the development of advanced multilayer integration in 3D optical communications systems.

Abstract:Wavelength-division-multiplexing(WDM) transceiver filters are one of the most essential components for realizing the fiber-to-the-home(FTTH) networks. In recent years, silicon photonics have provided a very attractive platform to build ultra-compact photonic integrated devices with CMOS-compatible processes. In this review, we focus on the recent progresses on diplexers/triplexers based on multimode interference couplers(MMI), and directional couplers(DC). The polarization-insensitive devices are also discussed.

Abstract:We propose a silicon photonicgrating coupling scheme for dual-band multiplexing in optical fibers. By utilizing subwavelength grating effective refractive index engineering, a dual-band operating grating coupler and a wavelength-polarization diplexer are designed. Both devices are fabricated on a 220-nm silicon-on-insulator and require only one 220-nm full etch step to facilitate cost-effective production. The subwavelength grating coupler guides S-band and O-band lights from a single-mode fiber into a waveguide as transverse-electric and transverse-magnetic modes, while the subwavelength diplexer separates the two signals into two waveguides. Experimentally, our proposed scheme for coupling and multiplexing can achieve a total insertion loss of –4.26 dB at near 1490 nm and –5.86 dB at near 1310 nm.

Abstract:Based on the symmetrical characteristic of fiber eigenmodes and high freedom of light phase manipulation of metasurfaces, this study presents a metasurface‐based fiber‐to‐chip multiplexing coupler that can simultaneously realize flexible‐mode conversion and multiplexing coupling between few‐mode fibers and on‐chip waveguides. With the ultracompact footprint and low crosstalk, such implementation is beneficial to the integration and miniaturization of fiber optical systems. Here, a metasurface‐based fiber‐to‐chip multiplexing coupler is presented that can realize flexible mode conversion and multiplexing coupling between few‐mode fibers and on‐chip single‐mode waveguides. The proposed approach makes use of the symmetrical characteristics of fiber eigenmodes and high freedom of light phase manipulation to obtain the functional phase distribution of metasurfaces. The use of cylindrical nanopillar as metasurface nanostructures ensures its polarization independent optical response. Several fiber‐to‐chip multiplexing couplers are demonstrated by using the angular spectrum methods and the finite‐difference time‐domain (FDTD) simulations. It is found that the two or three modes can be flexibly demultiplexed and then be coupled into the corresponding on‐chip waveguides with low crosstalk. Further, two possible fabrication schemes for multiplexing couplers are proposed and then the related fabrication tolerances and misalignment effects are evaluated and discussed. Compared with traditional on‐chip couplers, metasurface‐based couplers have advantages of ultracompact footprint and low crosstalk. Such study explores the application of metasurfaces in multiplexing coupling between few‐mode fiber and on‐chip single‐mode waveguides, which is expected to break through the bottleneck of current mode‐division multiplexing technologies in optical interconnection and meet the ever‐increasing demand for large data throughput of the photonic integrated chips.

Abstract:In this paper, a high‐efficiency edge coupler based on an alumina‐on‐insulator platform is introduced and experimentally validated. The coupler employs a symmetric double‐tip taper and a multimode interference‐based combiner. A coupling loss of 2.85 dB/facet has been achieved at λ = 407 nm, which is the lowest on this platform to the best of the knowledge. Integrated photonics is demanded in applications operating at ultraviolet to visible wavelengths, such as atomic/quantum systems, on‐chip broadband receivers, and far‐field structured illumination autofluorescence microscopy. A fundamental challenge in these applications is efficient edge coupling from a single‐mode fiber (SMF) to on‐chip photonic components, which is critical for on‐chip integration. In this paper, a high‐efficiency edge coupler based on an alumina‐on‐insulator platform is introduced and experimentally validated. The coupler employs a symmetric double‐tip taper and a multimode interference (MMI)‐based optical combiner. The double‐tip taper effectively expands the mode field diameter at the chip facet to match that of the SMF at the initial stage. Then the MMI‐based combiner efficiently combines the two channels in the taper into a highly confined strip waveguide. A coupling loss of 2.85 dB/facet has been achieved for the transverse magnetic mode at the wavelength of 407 nm, which is the lowest insertion loss for fiber‐chip coupling on this platform to the best of the knowledge. The design can significantly reduce the insertion loss associated with fiber‐chip coupling, offering a key component for diverse areas ranging from atomic/quantum photonic integrated circuits and ultra‐high capacity communications to optical microscopes.

Abstract:Due to the significant difference in spot size between lithium-niobate-on-insulator (LNOI) waveguide and fiber, there is a substantial coupling loss between them, which limits the interconnection and application of LN photonic chips. Although some LNOI edge couplers have been designed and fabricated with low coupling loss between chip and fiber, they require high etching accuracy. In this paper, a low-loss, broadband and easily fabricated edge coupler is designed and fabricated on the LNOI platform. To reduce the etching requirement for tip width, a design has been adopted with symmetrical double tips at the edge. Additionally, a multimode interferometer (MMI) is introduced to ensure large fabrication tolerance. The proposed design only requires a single full etching step, significantly reducing stringent requirements for process with high precise. Experimental results demonstrate that the device exhibits a coupling loss less than 3.5 dB/facet in the wavelength range of 1500 to 1640 nm, while achieving a low coupling loss of 2.71dB /facet at 1550 nm.

Abstract:A compact silicon hybrid (de)multiplexer is designed and demonstrated by integrating a single bi-directional AWG with a polarization diversity circuit, which consists of an ultra-short polarization-beam splitter (PBS) based on a bent coupler and a polarization rotator (PR) based on a silicon-on-insulator nanowire with a cut corner. The present hybrid (de)multiplexer can operate for both TE- and TM- polarizations and thus is available for PDM-WDM systems. An 18-channel hybrid (de)multiplexer is realized with 9 wavelengths as an example. The wavelength-channel spacing is 400GHz (i.e., Δλ(ch) = 3.2nm) and the footprint of the device is about 530μm × 210μm. The channel crosstalk is about -13dB and the total excess loss is about 7dB. The excess loss increases by about 1~2dB due to the cascaded polarization diversity circuit in comparison with a single bi-directional AWG.
