Abstract:This paper demonstrated a broadband power combiner using hyperbolic thin lens inside a rectangular waveguide. Simulation results show that combining efficiencies of 61% - 92% can be achieved across the entire Ka-band. More results will be discussed on the conference.

Abstract:A meniscus thin lens integrated in a rectangular waveguide is presented for broad-band high-efficiency power combining applications. The combiner structure is composed of ten side-by-side input waveguides, a meniscus thin lens with a matching layer, an E-plane sectoral horn, and an output waveguide. Simulation results from CST Microwave Studio show that the choice of the f/D number of the meniscus thin lens plays a significant role in achieving high combining efficiency and a matching layer also helps to improve the efficiency. For a ten-way combiner with center frequency of 30 GHz, a broad 80%-efficiency bandwidth of 11.5 GHz (28.5 GHz-40 GHz) has been achieved.
Novel Millimeter-Wave Power Combining Utilizing Wafer Level Packaging Technology

Abstract:It is extremely difficult to obtain high output power with silicon based processes, which presents one of the greatest challenges for realizing fully integrated transceivers, especially at millimeter-wave frequencies. For this reason, various power combining methods have been proposed to achieve higher power levels.In this paper, a novel power combining method suitable for millimeter-wave applications is presented. The power combining network is synthesized in package utilizing wafer level packaging technology, with an array of power sources of moderate output power capability assumed to be distributed on chip, which means applying further combining in addition to existing on-chip power combining scheme for potentially even higher output power is possible.The power combining network is composed of more basic power combining units, each consisting of one substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) resonator coupling four lambda/4 standing-wave resonators, which can be synthesized using two quarter-wavelength vertical vias with one end open and the other end shorted. For power combining purpose, the open end of each lambda/4 resonator is connected to the differential output of one on-chip power source, while the shorted end is realized using one of the two metal plates of the SIW resonator. The coupling between the SIW resonator and lambda/4 resonators is through slotting on the metal plate to allow magnetic leakage so that oscillation in lambda/4 resonators will excite the SIW resonator to oscillate. As the quality factor of the SIW resonator is much larger than those of lambda/4 resonators, energy is mainly confined in the cavity of the SIW resonator so that power combing is achieved.Example design for 60 GHz application is detailed in the paper with simulation results using commercial CST software showing the effectiveness of the power combining method.

Abstract:A two-dimensional waveguide thin lens is presented for mm-wave quasi-optical power combining. The proposed waveguide lens can be realized by air-filled parallel plate waveguides, thus free of dielectric loss. A ten-way power combiner using waveguide meniscus thin lens is given as a design example at 30 GHz. Simulations show the designed waveguide meniscus lens can achieve combining efficiencies of more than 93.2% across the entire Ka-band.

Abstract:A waveguide-based two-dimensional meniscus thin lens is proposed for mm-wave quasi-optical power combining in a closed structure.The proposed waveguide lens is operated in TE10 mode,and the effects of the dispersion are discussed.A matching layer is included to improve the combining efficiency.A ten-way power combiner using Rexolite material is given as a designed example at 30 GHz.Simulations show that the designed meniscus lens can achieve a combining efficiency of 92.6% at the design frequency of 30 GHz,and cover the entire Ka-band with more than 80% efficiency.

Abstract:This paper presents a two-way current-combining-based W-band power amplifier (PA) in 65-nm CMOS technology. An analytical model and design method for W-band power combiners are presented, which indicates current combining is preferred for millimeter-wave frequencies due to a good current handling capability, symmetrical design, and low sensitivity to parasitics. To demonstrate the concept, a two-way current-combining-based PA has been fabricated, where each channel utilizes compact and symmetrical transformer-based inter-stage coupling to realize a preferred fully differential implementation. This PA operates from 101 to 117 GHz with maximum power gain of 14.1 dB, saturated output power (Psat) of 14.8 dBm, and peak power-added efficiency of 9.4%. The core chip area without pads is 0.106 mm2.

Abstract:One of the key challenges to realize a fully integrated transceiver using silicon based processes is the limited output power achievable, especially at millimeter-wave frequencies. Higher output power can be obtained by using various power combining schemes, which typically sum the output power of N identical amplifying stages coherently. Thus to ensure efficient power combining, the input signal must be distributed to all the amplifying stages on the chip with equi-phase and equi-magnitude. While Wilkinson power splitter has been employed for this purpose in the literatures, it becomes bulky and inefficient when N is large, which severely limits the number of outputs that can be combined.In this paper, a network of coupled lambda/2 standing-wave oscillators is employed to distribute the input signal. Proposed formerly for global clock distribution, theoretically, differential signals of equi-frequency, equi-phase, and equi-magnitude can be obtained by taping onto specific points in the network. It should be noted, however, that the network is especially suited for input signal distribution purpose here, since the specific power combining scheme assumes that a grid of N amplifying stages resides on the chip, which matches to the tap points in a perfect way.A 30 GHz prototype network comprised of four coupled lambda/2 standing-wave oscillators using TSMC 0.18 mu m CMOS process has been design. Post-layout simulation results are presented showing that no distinguishable difference in frequency, phase, and amplitude is observed for the multiple output differential signals. The chip has a total area (including pads) of 800 x 990 mu m(2) and has been submitted for fabrication.

Abstract:This paper presents a high efficiency power combining demonstration of two 100 W K-band TWTAs using a 4-port magic-T hybrid junction-based waveguide circuit. A low loss, amplitude and phase balanced, high power magic-T is designed for power combiner. Power combining efficiencies of greater than 90% and output power of more than 170W over a 0.6 GHz frequency band are successfully demonstrated. Such hybrid junctions can also be considered as elements within a corporate combining architecture for much higher power generating.

Abstract:A high-performance polarizing beam splitter (PBS) is demonstrated by using asymmetrical directional couplers on a 220nm-thick silicon-on-insulator (SOI) photonics platform. The extinction ratio of the PBS with cascaded directional couplers is > 35 dB for both TE and TM polarizations around the central wavelength of 1550 nm. The bandwidths for an extinction ratio of 20 dB and 30 dB are 275 nm and 230 nm, respectively, for TE polarization, as well as > 300 nm and 225 nm, respectively, for TM polarization. The insertion losses for TE polarization are < 0.5 dB with a bandwidth of > 300 nm. The insertion losses for TM polarization are < 1 dB and < 0.5 dB with a bandwidth of 218 nm and 174 nm, respectively.

Abstract:Three single-mode photonic crystal waveguides (PCWs) are put together closely to construct three PCWs directional coupler (3PCWDC). It is found that the coupling coefficient of two even modes excited by the input field symmetrically entering 3PCWDC may be increased dramatically by reducing the size scales of dielectric rods between the neighbouring PCWs. The coupling length in this structure can be much shorter than that in conventional PCWs within the frequency range of interest. The application of this feature to an ultracompact, wide bandwidth and high-transmission power splitter is addressed. The simulation results by using the finite-difference time-domain method show that the structure exhibits new interesting characteristics.

Abstract:High power amplifier is the key element of microwave transmitters. Solid-state spatial power combiner is issued to replace traveling wave tube amplifier (TWTA) in space communication systems. To comply with space requirements a new compact Ka-band spatial power combining architecture is proposed using a double-faced tray. To match the 2 times 2 combining structure, double antipodal finline is designed to achieve power distributing/combining and transition between waveguide and microstrip. A 29~30 GHz spatial power combiner is designed following this architecture. With it the compact architecture proves effective and prospective.

Abstract:In this article, the synthesis method to design a spatial power combiner by reflecting mirrors is presented. For a broadband power combination, the mirrors are designed using a two-frequency optimization method, which is facilitated by a segmenting-and-regrouping process to achieve the near-field coupling of wave modulation at different frequencies. The effect on bandwidth performance led by the segmenting operation is studied, with a specific focus on two key parameters, including the frequency interval and the partition size, to uncover an optimal design approach. Following the synthesis method, a 2-to-1 spatial power combiner is developed based on the proposed method. The simulation results show that the spatial power combiner can obtain a high-purity Gaussian output around 95% with a broad fractional bandwidth of 43.0%. To further validate the synthesis method, the designed spatial power combiner is fabricated and tested by radiation field measurements. The results are consistent with the simulation ones, where the high purity of the Gaussian output is verified. The proposed synthesis method can significantly improve the bandwidth of the spatial power combination system, and it can also be utilized for other designs of components involving beam modulation, such as mode converters or beam generators.

Abstract:A compact broadband combiner with a high power capacity and a low insertion loss, which is especially useful for solid-state power sources where multi-way power synthesis is needed, was designed and experimentally investigated. The combiner could combine the microwave signals of sixteen terminals into a single one and was based on a radial-line waveguide whose circumferential symmetry benefited the amplitude and phase consistency of the combiner. Simulation and experimental results showed that the prototype device, designed for S-band applications, exhibited a reflection coefficient S1,1 < ‚ąí20 dB in the range of 2.06‚Äď2.93 GHz, which corresponds to a relative bandwidth of approximately 34.6%. At 2.45 GHz, the phase imbalance was ¬Ī4.5¬į and the 16-way transmission coefficient was concentrated around ‚ąí12.0~‚ąí12.3 dB. The insertion loss of the device at ambient and elevated temperatures was simulated and experimentally verified, which is of importance for the design of similar high-power microwave combiners. High-power tests proved that even without enforced wind or liquid cooling, the device can handle continuous power (CW) of at least 3.9 kW, which can be much enhanced by taking regular cooling measures. The combined features of the designed combiner suggest promising applications for power synthesis in high-power, solid-state RF sources.

Abstract:This paper presents a novel millimeter wave power-combining system which can be fabricated with modern packaging technology and compatible with CMOS process. The system is comprised of a silicon integrated waveguide (SIW) resonator coupled with numerous λ/4 standing wave resonators, all of which can be fabricated by using via holes in 3-D packaging level. The coupling between the SIW resonator and the λ/4 standing wave resonators can be fabricated by eroding slots in the metal layer. An example system operating at 77GHz is illustrated and simulation results of electromagnetic field distribution in the SIW resonator and around the λ/4 standing wave resonators from professional electromagnetic simulation tool are presented. It is shown that the resonant frequency and phase of these λ/4 standing wave resonators are controlled by the SIW resonator and the power of all these λ/4 standing wave resonators can be combined in the SIW resonator. The SIW resonator operates in TE102 mode and has a quality factor of more than 500, which is much higher than that of each independent λ/4 standing wave resonators with quality factor of about 150. Thus the proposed power-combining system fabricated in packaging level can work effectively and features a lower loss and high quality factor.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a Ka-band power combining amplifier based on a new single double faced tray architecture. Using 4 off-the-shelf GaAs monolithic-microwave integerated-circuit (MMIC) power amplifiers with double antipodal finline power splitting/combining antenna arrays, the power combining circuit can produced up to 83% of combining efficient. Taking one with another, the new combining architecture shows many advantages, such as small size, excellent heat-sinking capacity, high efficiency and so on. The modular architecture also allows easy maintenance, variable output power level, and modular assembly.Results on graceful degradation are also presented, showing superb tolerance to device failure.

Abstract:Efficient broadband coupling of light between a dielectric waveguide and a hybrid plasmonic waveguide is investigated theoretically. A plasmonic linear taper is used as a coupler which connects the two types of waveguides. Broadband coupling is realized by such a compact plasmonic taper with a length of only 0.4 microm, which achieves a coupling efficiency of 70% (1.5 dB) at the 1.55 microm telecommunication wavelength.

Abstract:A multi-octave power combining structure based on rectangular coaxial transmission line (RCTL) is presented in this paper. In this structure, a tapered transition T-junction is employed for power combining, while the operating bandwidth is extended to cover multiple octaves by introducting multistage impedance transformation. A suspended structure is adopted for the inner conductor, which minimizes the dielectric loss and improves the power handling. Utilizing this technology, a prototype of four-way combiner with simulated power combining capacity of 2kW was designed and fabricated. According to the measured results, the insertion and reflection loss is better than -0.5dB and -15dB, respectively, along with excellent amplitude and phase balance.

Abstract:Spatial power combining of two Ka-band microfabricated traveling wave tubes (TWTs) is reported. The TWTs are based on planar helix slow-wave structure with straight-edge connections (PH-SEC). Transition from a waveguide to the PH-SEC forms the basis for division of input power from a waveguide to the TWTs and for combining the output power into a waveguide. For a 3.7 KV and 10 mA beam, the PIC simulation results show that the output power can reach 13 W at 30GHz, with a calculated combining efficiency of 98%.

A low loss, amplitude and phase balanced, high power corporate magic-T combiner is designed. Power combining efficiencies of greater than 90% and output power of more than 340W over a 0.6 GHz frequency band are successfully demonstrated. Such hybrid junctions can also be considered as elements within a corporate combining architecture for much higher power generating for satellite communications or other industrial applications.

Abstract:Wavelength conversion and five-channel multicasting for 20 Gbit/s quadrature phase-shift keying signals have been experimentally demonstrated based on four-wave mixing in a silicon waveguide with digital coherent detection. The eye diagrams and constellation diagrams of the converted and multicasting idlers are successfully observed. Moreover, the bit-error rates (BERs) of the generated idlers are measured and the power penalties are all less than 0.7 dB at a BER of 3×10(-3).

Abstract:A V-Band solid-state power amplifier/combiner is demonstrated in this paper. 8-way radial-line power combiner/divider and microstrip-to-waveguide transitions are proposed and designed. The insert losses of the passive combiner/divider is 2.6 dB as tested in back-to-back configuration, which indicates about 0.3 dB insert loss of the combine/divider network, and exhibits a combining efficiency of 93% at 60 GHz. Active circuit test results show the maximum total output power is 18 dBm. Further discussion is presented to analyze the reasons of power degradation, this is mainly due to the wildly unequal phase delays of the power combine/divider, and the position of the coaxial probe obviously affects the uniformity of the combine/divider network.
