Abstract:The dissociation of carbon tetrachloride on Ag(111) surface has been studied with first principles calculations. All the possible adsorption structures and dissociation paths were studied. The results show that the adsorption energy of all of the potential sites is less than -0.1 eV, which indicates that CCl4 is physisorbed on a Ag(111) surface and the surface diffusion would be very fast at elevated temperature. The dissociation of CCl4 was studied with NEB method. The lowest dissociation barrier is only 0.2 eV. The small activation energies indicate that the Ag(111) surface has high catalytic activity for the CCl4 dissociation reaction, and the reaction should be spontaneous at room temperature. Differential charge density analysis reveals that the surface charge transfers to adsorbate to promote the reaction.
