Abstract:Electron-accepting solution-processable conjugated polymers consisting of perylene diimide moieties alternating with dithienothiophene, oligo(dithienothiophene), or N-dodecyl dithienopyrrole units have been synthesized. All these polymers possess excellent thermal stability with decomposition temperatures over 400 °C. The glass-transition temperatures vary from 155 to 263 °C. These polymers show broad absorption extending from 250 to 900 nm with electrochemical and optical bandgaps as low as 1.4 eV; the maximum absorbance increases and the bandgap decreases with increasing the conjugation length of oligo(dithienothiophene), while the bandgap can also be decreased by the replacement of dithienothiophene by dithienopyrrole. The electrochemical onset reduction potentials range from −0.8 to −1.0 V vs. ferrocenium/ferrocene, suggesting that the electron affinities are essentially unaffected by the specific choice of donor moiety, while the onset oxidation potentials (+0.6 to +1.0 V) are a little more sensitive to the choice of donor. The mono dithienothiophene and the dithienopyrrole polymers were found to exhibit electron mobilities as high as 1.3 × 10−2 and 1.2 × 10−3 cm2V−1s−1, respectively, in top-contact organic field-effect transistors. Power conversion efficiencies in the range 0.77–1.1% were obtained under simulated AM 1.5, 100 mW/cm2 irradiation for all-polymer solar cells using the dithienothiophene-based polymers as acceptors in a 1 : 1 ratio with a polythiophene derivative as a donor. The device performance varies with the conjugation length of oligo(dithienothiophene) in the polymer acceptors, and for the best-performing material it can be further optimized to give a power conversion efficiency of 1.5% by increasing the donor/acceptor weight ratio to 3 : 1.

Abstract:The photovoltaic behaviors of diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) embedded poly(phenylenevinylene) (C8-DPP-PPV) and poly(phenyleneethynylene) (C10-DPP-PPE) were investigated. The two polymers exhibited good solubility in common organic solvents, high thermal stability and broad UV/visible absorption ranging from 300 to 600nm in films. Their optical band gaps were found to be 1.94eV for C8-DPP-PPV and 2.05eV for C10-DPP-PPE. Moreover, their HOMO energy levels were relatively low at around −5.6 to −5.8eV as estimated by electrochemical measurements. The polymer/PCBM bulk heterojunction solar cells exhibited a power conversion efficiency of 0.16% for C10-DPP-PPE. In addition, all-polymer solar cells consisting of C10-DPP-PPE/P3HT were also fabricated in view of the potential of C10-DPP-PPE as a polymeric acceptor, revealing an efficiency of 0.01%.

The flexible spacer offers increased solubility in organic solvents and allows the perylene core to assume a conformation that promotes favorable cofacial π–π interactions. Mixtures of these polymers with the hole-transporting polymer, poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) result in significant fluorescence quenching. However, the phase separation occurs on a scale too large for a bulk heterojunction solar cell. The PPGylated poly(perylene diimide) shows an unusually low free electron concentration (~1.0 × 10 12 cm −3 ) and therefore makes an excellent model system for future doping studies. These new polymers may have promise as stable electron-conductive layers with large light-absorptivities in solution-processable applications of organic electronics.

A High-Mobility Electron-Transport Polymer with Broad Absorption and Its Use in Field-Effect Transistors and All-Polymer Solar Cells

Abstract:An electron-transport polymer with good solution processibility, excellent thermal stability, and high electron affinity based on alternating perylene diimide and dithienothiophene units has been synthesized. Electron mobilities as high as 1.3 x 10(-2) cm(2) V-1 s(-1) have been measured in field-effect transistor geometry. The polymer shows broad absorptions throughout the visible and extending into the near-IR. A power conversion efficiency of over 1%, under simulated AM 1.5, 100 mW/cm(2), was measured for a single-layer solar cell using this polymer as an acceptor and a polythiophene derivative as a donor.

Abstract:A novel poly(phenylene ethynylene) derivative containing benzothiadiazole (BT) co-monomer (PPE-BT) was synthesized, characterized and used for photovoltaic devices. Photovoltaic devices of ITO/PEDOT-PSS/pristine PPE-BT/Ba/Al and ITO/PEDOT-PSS/PPE-BT+PCBM (1/4w/w)/Ba/Al were fabricated and their photovoltaic performances were measured and discussed. The energy conversion efficiency and incident photo-current conversion efficiency of photovoltaic device based on PPE-BT+PCBM reached 0.022% (78.2mW/cm2, AM1.5) and 1% (391nm), respectively. Its photosensitivity reached 3.1mA/W, which is almost one order of magnitude higher compared to that of the pure PPE-BT. The electroluminescence of pristine PPE-BT was almost completely quenched when it was blended with PCBM.

Abstract:In this work, we report on conjugated polymers based on an alternating perylene diimide and dithenothiophene units that are solution-processible, have excellent thermal stability, have high electron affinity (estimated at 3.8-4.0 eV), iv) have high electron mobility (2 × 10-2 cm2/V s by OFET measurements) and v) exhibit significant absorption across the visible, extending into the near-IR (as far as ca. 850 nm). We also report device work demonstrating that this material has potential as an electron-transport material in n-channel organic field-effect transistors, where the electron mobility of 2 × 10-2 cm2/Vs is among the highest for a solution-processed device and in all-polymer PSCs where, in conjunction with a polythiophene derivative, we found a power conversion efficiency of over 1% under white-light illumination (AM 1.5, 100 mW/cm2). In addition we will consider positive and negative factors impacting the role of rylene diimide-based materials in organic solar cell applications.
Poly(2,7-carbazole) and perylene tetracarboxydiimide: a promising donor/acceptor pair for polymer solar cells

Abstract:A highly soluble polycarbazole (PCz) has been synthesized, and used as a donor material with perylene tetracarboxydiimide (PDI) as an acceptor and light harvesting material in bulk-heterojunction solar cells. This donor/acceptor (D/A) pair shows a broad absorption fit within the solar spectrum, and balanced potential levels for charge separation at the D/A interface. The best photovoltaic device exhibits a high external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 16% at 490 nm and a power efficiency of 0.6% under illumination with solar light. The morphology of PCz/ PDI films studied by SEM showed the formation of a favorable micro-phase separation, which is important in obtaining high efficiency. Incorporation of poly(3-hexyl) thiophene (P3HT) instead of PCz as donor produced a much lower V-oc and thus a lower efficiency in solar cells.

Abstract:Most polymers employed in organic photovoltaic cells have π-conjugated backbones. Here we investigate the physical and optoelectronic properties of three nonconjugated polymers based on perylene diimides. The optical properties, exciton diffusion length, band edge positions, conductivity, and carrier mobility of these polymers are described. They are electron-conducting and highly photostable. The film structure and optoelectronic properties vary with deposition conditions and annealing procedures. One of the polymers has an unusually long exciton diffusion length of 22 nm. The free electron density resulting from n-type charged defects is ∼3 × 1015 cm−3 in one polymer and is even lower in the others. Simple bilayer solar cells are limited by their series resistance suggesting that these semiconductor films would benefit from doping.

Abstract:Five wide or medium band gap diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP)-based conjugated polymers with pyridine as bridges were developed for organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) and polymer solar cells (PSCs). By introducing copolymerized aromatic building blocks from strong electron-donating units to electron-deficient units into the conjugated backbone, the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) levels of the DPP polymers were tailored to the low-lying position. Therefore, the polarity of charge transport in OFETs can be switched from p-type to n-type. The DPP polymer with a low-lying LUMO of -3.80 eV provides a hole-only mobility of 2.95 x 10(-2) cm(2) V-1 s(-1), while an electron-only mobility of 1.24 x 10(-3) cm(2) V-1 s(-1) is found in the DPP polymer with a LUMO of -4.22 eV. Further investigation of photovoltaic cells based on these DPP polymers shows a modest power conversion efficiency (PCE) of around 2%. Our results demonstrate that wide band gap pyridine-bridged DPP polymers have potential application in OFETs and OSCs by adjusting their energy level with alternated units on the conjugated backbone.

Abstract:A new conjugated polymer, poly(3,6-dihexyl-thieno[3,2-b]thiophenyl-2,5-diyl-alt-2,5-di(2-ethylhexyl)-3,6-bis(thien-2,5-diyl)-pyrrolo[3,4-c]-pyrrole-1,4-dione) (DH-PTTDPP) was synthesized by Pd-catalyzed Stille-coupling method. The thermal, absorption, electrochemical, photovoltaic properties, and field-effect charge transport of the polymer were examined. The polymer is soluble in common organic solvents and possesses a broad absorption band covering from 500nm to 900nm with an optical bandgap of 1.33eV. Field-effect transistors (FETs) based on DH-PTTDPP thin film showed a hole mobility of 2.5×10−3cm2V−1s−1 with an on/off ratio of 105, which is among the high values for the conjugated polymers. Polymer solar cells (PSCs) based on DH-PTTDPP/PC70BM (1:1.5, w/w) demonstrated a power conversion efficiency of 1.90% under the illumination of AM 1.5, 100mWcm−2. These results indicate that DH-PTTDPP is an attractive polymer semiconductor for the applications in FETs and PSCs.

Abstract:Three thiazole-bridged DPP polymers with deep lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) levels were designed for field-effect transistors (FETs) and polymer-polymer solar cells. By introducing thiazole-thiazole coupled segments, perfluoroalkyl side chains or strong electron-deficient naphthalenediimide units into the conjugated backbone the three thiazole-bridged DPP polymers have LUMO levels of -4.0 to -4.4 eV. The three DPP polymers exhibit optical absorption in the near-infrared region, crystallinity and an electron mobility of around 0.01 cm(2) V-1 s(-1) in bottom contact FETs. The polymers were applied as electron acceptors in polymer-polymer solar cells to provide PCEs of around 0.4%. The low PCEs are mainly due to low short-circuit currents (J(sc)) and attributed to large phase separation. Our results demonstrate several efficient strategies to lower the energy levels of conjugated polymers in order to be used as universal acceptors for photovoltaic cells.

Abstract:Perylene diimide is a typical n-type semiconductor material, which possesses high electron mobility and strong absorption in visible region as well as high optical and thermal stability. In recent years, perylene diimide and its derivatives have been well applied to organic photovoltaic cells. In this article, the structures and properties of perylene diimide and its derivatives are introduced. The recent progress in the studies of perylene diimide acceptor materials, including small molecule perylene diimide, perylene diimide acceptor-containing D-A bi-functional molecules and donor-acceptor block copolymers containing perylene diimide acceptor segments in the organic photovoltaic cells is reviewed.

Abstract:Diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) is attractive for building conjugated polymers for polymer solar cell (PSC) and organic field effect transistor (OFET). Yet the usual access to DPP conjugated polymers is via donor-acceptor (D-A) two-component polymerization. However, the number of excellent polymers based on the D-A combination is still limited, which promotes researchers to explore new strategy for preparation of novel conjugated polymers and to understand their structure-property relationship. In this work, a DPP-based polymer P1 was first obtained with co-polymerization of DPP (A) and alkoxyl benzene (D). Further, two novel polymers (P2 and P3) were developed via introducing a third electron-deficient monomer X (difluoro-benzothiadiazole or naphthalene diimide) in the polymerization process. P1 - P3 polymers (molecular weight: 3.83 x 10(4), 5.30 x 10(4) and 6.56 x 10(4)) showed good solubility in common organic solvents. Due to the hybridization of the molecular orbitals between their three components (D, A and X), P2 and P3 showed narrower bandgaps (1.26 and 1.27 eV) than P1, and their absorption thus red-shifted up to 1000 nm in comparison to that of D-A polymer P1 (bandgap of 1.50 eV). The introduction of electron-deficient monomers also deepened the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) levels of P2 and P3 to -5.28 and -5.33 eV, which was beneficial to a larger open circuit voltage (V-OC) in PSCs. Moreover, the introduction of the third monomer X altered the film properties of the polymers. It showed that P1 with preference of face-on orientation exhibited a good power conversion efficiency (PCE) in PSCs, while P2 demonstrated an improved hole mobility in OFET due to the preferable edge-on orientation. When blended with [6,6]-phenyl-C-71-butyric acid methyl ester (PC71BM), P1 showed a PCE of 2.56%, with a V-OC of 0.68 V, a short circuit current density (J(SC)) of 5.71 mA cm(-2) and a fill factor (FF) of 0.66, while P2 gave a lower PCE of 1.79%, with a V-OC of 0.71 V, a J(SC) of 3.91 mA cm(-2) and a FF of 0.65. This work provides references for the design of novel conjugated polymers for PSCs and OFETs.

Abstract:A strategy of the fine-tuning of the degree of intrachain charge transfer and aromaticity of polymer backbone was adopted to design and synthesize new polymers applicable in photovoltaics. Three conjugated polymers P1, P2, and P3 were synthesized by alternating the electron-donating dithieno[3,2-b:2'3'-d]pyrrole (D) and three different electron-accepting (A) segments (P1: N-(2-ethylhexyl)phthalimide; P2: 1,4-diketo-3,6-diphenylpyrrolo[3,4-c]pyrrole; and P3: thiophene-3-hexyl formate) in the polymer main chain. Among the three polymers, P2 possessed the broadest absorption band ranging from 300 to 760 nm, the lowest bandgap (1.63 eV), and enough low HOMO energy level (-5.27 eV) because of the strong intrachain charge transfer from D to A units and the appropriate extent of quinoid state in the main chain of P2, which was convinced by the theoretical simulation of molecular geometry and front orbits. Photovoltaic study of solar cells based on the blends of P1-P3 and [6,6]-phenyl-C-61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) demonstrated that P2:PCBM exhibited the best performance: a power conversion efficiency of 1.22% with a high open-circuit voltage (V-OC) of 0.70 V and a large short-circuit current (I-SC) of 5.02 mA/cm(2) were achieved. Abstract:An n-type semiconducting copolymer of perylene diimide and dithienothiophene (PPDIDTT) is used as a dual function interfacial layer to modify the surface of perovskite films in inverted perovskite solar cells. The PPDIDTT layer can remarkably passivate the surface trap states of perovskite through the formation of a Lewis adduct between the under-coordinated Pb in perovskite and S in the dithienothiophene unit of PPDIDTT, and also shows efficient charge extraction and transfer properties. The PPDIDTT modified devices exhibit a maximum power conversion efficiency of 16.5%, superior to that of the control devices without PPDIDTT (15.3%). In addition, the device stability and hysteresis in J–V curves of the modified devices are also improved compared to those of the control devices.

Abstract:A semi-crystalline conjugated polymer based on two electron-deficient units, pentacyclic lactam (PCL) and diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP), was designed and synthesized for application in field-effect transistors (FETs) and polymer solar cells (PSCs). The polymer has a high molecular weight, near-infrared absorption up to 900 nm and good solubility in toluene. When the polymer thin films were solution-processed from toluene with diphenyl ether as an additive, the FET devices achieved a high hole mobility of 0.81 cm(2) V-1 s(-1). With the same solution-processing solvents, bulk-heterojunction solar cells based on this polymer as an electron donor provided a power conversion efficiency of 4.7% with an optimal energy loss of 0.65 eV due to its deep lowest unoccupied molecular orbital level. Further study on the morphology of the pure polymer or blend thin films by atomic force microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and 2D grazing-incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering reveals that the new polymer has good crystalline property, which is mainly due to the coplanar nature of the conjugated backbone. This work demonstrates that conjugated polymers incorporating several electron-deficient units can be potentially used in high performance FETs and PSCs.

Abstract:An amino-substituted conjugated polymer (PPDI-F3N) is synthesized and used as a multifunctional interfacial layer to modify TiO2films in conventional planar perovskite solar cells, leading to a higher efficiency, better stability and reduced hysteresis.

Abstract:The solar energy, as a kind of abundant and clean energy, is one of the best ways to solve the energy crisis. Recently, perylene bisimide derivatives have been extensively studied as one of the most functional materials, providing prospects for applications in organic solar cells, because of their cheap price, good thermal and photochemical stability, high electron affinity, high absorption and fluorescence quantum yield. Also, the derivatives are easy to functionalize at imide or "bay" positions. The present review summarizes the progress of solar cells based on perylene bisimide derivatives. Authors' work on the solar cells based on perylene bisimide derivatives is introduced, the hotspots to be further investigated are discussed.
