Abstract:In this paper, an optimized method is proposed for the design of fully integrated fractional-N PLL system. The main target is to get relatively small capacitor value for on chip low pass filter while satisfy the system phase noise requirement. The method is implemented in CMMB application whose output frequency of the PLL is from 1.88 to 3.48 GHz. With the VCO tuning gain varying from 50 to 100MHz/V, crystal frequency of some discrete value between 13MHz and 38.4MHz and proper charge pump current, we get the optimized capacitor value less than 120pF over loop parameter variations, which is suitable for on chip realization. The overall phase noises are -81dBc/Hz and -129 dBc/Hz at 1kHz and 1.45MHz respectively in simulation for worst case.

Abstract:A digital integrated circuit to realize multi-chip phase synchro-nization of fractional-N PLL with local oscillator divider is designed. An offset of fractional frequency ratio is added in phase difference calcula-tion, which effectively avoids the large calculation error under some special fractional frequency ratios. Different from traditional one-time synchro-nization, a synchronization method with tracking mode is proposed, which can further reduce the phase error. The test result of the chip finished in 65 nm COMS shows that the method of tracking mode and adding the fractional frequency ratio's offset are effective to reduce the error of phase synchronization to about 0.2 degrees.

Abstract:A model of the nested phase locked loop (PLL),which is the most important component in the TT&C transponder,is established based on the modern charge-pump PLL.The lock time and phase noise characteristics are simulated,and the results are comparable with the test results of real circuit.The results indicate that there is a best loop bandwidth to make the lock time smallest.And the noise of the nested PLL is better than that of single PLL.This model can be used to optimize the performance of TT&C transponder.

Abstract:This paper presents a PLL using synchronized multiple references with in-band phase noise (PN) lower than the conventional theoretical limit of reference phase $\text{noise+} 20\text{logN}_{\mathrm{d}\mathrm{i}\mathrm{v}}$ . The proposed technique provides design flexibility to alleviate the jitter-power trade-off in PLL. Realized in 65-nm CMOS, the prototype achieves in-band PN 1.7-dB lower than the conventional theoretical limit, with four synchronized references. The proposed PLL can be configured in a single reference mode achieving 0.54-ps integrated jitter. In the contrast, the proposed PLL using four synchronized references achieves 0.35-ps integrated jitter.

Abstract:In contrast with Phase-Locked Loop (PLL), Frequency Locked Loop (FLL) has better dynamic performance. There were papers dealing with noise performance of FLL. However, under the circumstance of CW input, there were large gap between simulation results and theory results which were obtained from published papers. This paper analysis the reason of the gap and proposes an improved calculation method in the condition of four-quadrant arctangent and cross product discriminator. Results show that the improved calculation method fits the simulation result very well.

Abstract:A conventional figure-of-merit (FOM) for a phase-locked loop (PLL) has served as the most powerful indicator to compare and to normalize performance of different PLL designs. Simply, the conventional FOM is based on the jitter-power trade-off. With a few assumptions, theoretically, it provides a fair comparison. However, as the PLL design techniques have advanced, the assumptions have started breaking. Also, it misses performance impacts from some other important factors other than the jitter and the power. As a result, it is expected that the performance comparison with the conventional FOM is not fair enough for some cases. This work reviews the state-of-the-art PLL design techniques and investigates how those techniques conflict with the assumptions of the conventional FOM. In addition, alternate FOMs which complement the conventional FOM are discussed. To capture complex cross-correlation between various factors, the proposed methodology is to find a correlation between the conventional FOM and other factors from extensive performance surveys, along with quantitative analyses.

Abstract:A novel real-time phase noise cancelling algorithm with dynamic phase adjustment technique is presented in this paper to improve quantization noise cancelling effect for wideband sigma-delta fractional-N phase locked loops (PLLs). The proposed noise cancelling algorithm in cooperation with DAC based current sources adjusts charge pump current to be constant, which varies at steady state due to division ratio variation. PLLs using conventional and the proposed phase noise cancelling techniques are designed and simulated using Simulink, respectively. Noise comparison shows that the proposed technique achieves additional 7dB phase noise reduction.

Abstract:The limitation of reference phase noise (PN) causes problems for the very low-jitter phase-locked loops (PLLs), which is increasingly critical and may be an impediment toward 10 fs jitter. This article presents a multireference PLL (MRPLL) architecture featuring the ability to reduce reference PN by using more reference clocks. The architecture evolution, noise model analysis, and circuit design considerations are presented. Theoretically, the major contributor of reference PN is the reference buffer, including the buffer inside a packaged crystal oscillator (XO) and the buffer on-chip. Increasing the reference frequency can significantly reduce the PN of the reference buffer. The prototype of the MRPLL is implemented in a 65-nm CMOS process and achieves 16.1 fs jitter.

Abstract:This article presents a space–time averaging technique that can realize instantaneous fractional frequency division, and thus, can significantly reduce the quantization error in a fractional-<inline-formula> <tex-math notation="LaTeX">$N$ </tex-math></inline-formula> phase-locked loop (PLL). Spatial averaging can be achieved by using an array of dividers running in parallel. Their different division ratios are generated by using a fractional <inline-formula> <tex-math notation="LaTeX">$\Delta \Sigma $ </tex-math></inline-formula> modulator (DSM) and a dynamic element matching (DEM) block. To reduce the divider power, this article also proposes a way to achieve spatial averaging using only one divider and phase selection. A prototype 2.4-GHz fractional-<inline-formula> <tex-math notation="LaTeX">$N$ </tex-math></inline-formula> PLL is implemented in a 40-nm CMOS process. Measurement results show that the proposed technique reduces the phase noise by 10 and 21 dB at the 1- and 10-MHz offset, respectively, leading to a reduction of the integrated rms jitter from 9.55 to 2.26 ps.

Abstract:This paper describes a phase noise reduction method with hybrid phase detection in the design of semidigital ΔΣ phase-locked loops (PLLs) that employ a finite impulse response (FIR) filtering technique for quantization noise reduction. A static phase offset problem is addressed and the use of a hybrid phase detector is proposed to further enhance noise and spur reduction performance. It is also shown that the FIR filtering not only suppresses out-of-band quantization noise but also improves in-band noise by mitigating the nonlinearity effect of the charge pump. Behavior simulation results show that the proposed semidigital ΔΣ PLL improves the in-band noise and reference spur performance by 20dB compared with the conventional ΔΣ PLL.

Abstract:A 16-modulo fractional-N bang-bang digital PLL (BB-DPLL) is implemented in 65nm CMOS. It is firstly shown that a hybrid FIR filtering method not only improves spur performance but also reduces in-band phase noise for finite-modulo fractional-N bang-bang PLLs. A 4-bit digital-to-time converter (DTC) with auto-tuned delay cells is also employed to further enhance the fractional-N BB-DPLL performance. Experimental results show that the proposed method reduces both the in-band phase noise and the fractional spur by about 15dB with 4-bit linearity requirement.

Abstract:This paper presents an improved phase frequency detector (PFD) and a novel charge pump (CP) for phase locked loop (PLL) applications. The output signals of the proposed PFD have perfect symmetry with the additional four latches. Two small PMOS transistors and two inverters are added to work as level recovery to avoid the uncertain state of PFD when the circuit powers on. The proposed CP circuit employs two rail-to-rail OP amplifiers to minimize the mismatch between the charging and the discharging current, which minimizes the steady-state phase error in a PLL and reduces the reference spurs. Moreover, a simple but effective technique is proposed to suppress the glitches of the output current, which also decreases the level of reference spurs in a PLL and at the same time increases the dynamic range of the CP. A PLL adopting the proposed PFD and CP is fabricated in TSMC 0.13um 1.2V CMOS process, and test results indicate that the PLL can achieve -56dBc reference spur level.

Abstract:This paper presents a phase noise improvement method for fine tuning of type-I ADPLL by exploiting its nonlinear quantization effects. When quantization step approaches the same orders of magnitude of standard deviation of input noise, quantization effects become nonlinear, and additive noise modeling of quantization effects is no longer applicable. By proper offsetting the input signals in this case, the feedback loop of ADPLL can be very sensitive to frequency phase deviation. It results in a larger loop bandwidth, and in turn smaller in-band phase noise than in linear quantization case. A theoretic s-domain noise model is proposed to quantify the phase noise in nonlinear case. Results are verified in Modelsim simulations. Proposed method offers possibility of achieving lower phase noise by lower quantization resolution and less circuit design efforts.

Abstract:This paper describes a hybrid frequency/phase-locked loop (F/PLL) in which a PLL operates as a nested digitally-controlled oscillator (DCO). The nested DCO based on the wideband PLL not only offers a constant gain but also enables low noise clock generation even with a very low reference frequency. A digital FLL with a 1-bit AZ frequency detector (FD) is designed as a main loop to avoid having a linear time-to-digital converter (TDC). A prototype fractional-N F/PLL is implemented in 65nm CMOS. The proposed F/PLL achieves an in-band noise of −90dBc/Hz at 1.5GHz output with a 15kHz reference clock and a 60MHz system clock, consuming 9.2mW from a 1V supply.

Abstract:Brute force transistor-level simulation of PLL is precise but suffers long simulation time and convergence problems, both with time domain and harmonic-balance techniques. On the other hand common behavioral phase domain simulation is rapid but doesn't consider the non-idealities at transistor-level. In this paper we propose a piecewise transistor-level simulation method, which stands between the two above approaches, and combines the advantages of both. In the proposed method, a hierarchical simulation process is applied to compute an accurate steady state, and a small-signal model is created for phase noise calculation. The phase noise is obtained rapidly and accurately.

Abstract:This paper presents a fractional-N all digital phase locked loop (ADPLL) using a retiming high linear digital phase interpolator (DPI), which is free from pre- and background-calibration. The DPI utilizes a charge-sharing effect insensitive charge-based structure to improve the linearity. Designed in a 40-nm CMOS technology, the proposed DPI achieves 9-bit resolution, 0.3ps integral nonlinearity (INL) and 0.083ps differential nonlinearity (DNL). The proposed ADPLL achieves −118 dBc/Hz in-band phase noise at 1MHz and −93.9dBc fractional spur with the 0.3ps nonlinearity of DPI.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel architecture of a fractional-N phase-locked loop (PLL) is presented for digital clock generation. By employing multimodulus dividers in parallel with sequential outputs of a DeltaSigma modulator, finite impulse response (FIR) filtering with respect to modulator noise is realized in the PLL, resulting in quantization noise reduction in high frequencies. Hence, a low oversampling ratio (OSR) DeltaSigma fractional-N PLL can be achieved without increasing quantization noise. Architecture comparison and simulation results are also presented.

Abstract:This paper presents an analog low-power sub-sampling phase locked loop (PLL) that tackles the reference spur caused by VCO load modulation from the sub-sampling operation. A complete analysis on the binary frequency shift keying (BFSK) effect including the impact of the VCO buffer is provided, followed by practical design guide that achieves the optimum spur/jitter trade-off. The proposed sub-sampling phase detector incorporates an active primary-secondary architecture for improved isolation to suppress the load modulation. The adaptive frequency locked loop (FLL) consumes zero power in the locked state and activates itself once unlocking is detected. The sub-sampling PLL is fabricated in a 40nm CMOS process. It achieves -121.5dBc/Hz phase noise at 1MHz offset frequency and an RMS jitter of 185fs integrated from 10k to 10MHz. The power dissipation is 1.14mW at 0.95V supply with a -254.1dB figure-of-merit. The proposed phase detector results in -73dBc reference spur that is among the lowest in state-of-art works.

Abstract:This paper presents a low-noise ultra-wideband fractional-N change pump phase-locked loop (CPPLL). By adopting two parallel voltage-controlled oscillators (VCOs) and the synchronized dual-core design, the 8.5–17.8-GHz output is covered and the phase noise is reduced by about 3 dB with the halving total equivalent inductance of the tank. Meanwhile, the clock distribution is designed to obtain 0.05–8.9-GHz output. By using the retiming and separate division techniques, frequency coupling is solved, and the implementation of the clock distribution is separated from its noise considerations, which alleviates design complexity. Fabricated in 65-nm CMOS process, the proposed CPPLL is verified, and it achieves −109.9-dBc/Hz@1 MHz phase noise and −71.6-dBc reference spur at 16-GHz output. The integrated jitter is 144 fs from 10 kHz to 100 MHz.
