Abstract:Optical second harmonic generation is a fundamental nonlinear effect with a large impact on laser technology and optical imaging/sensing. For most practical applications of second harmonic generation, high conversion efficiency is required. However, many techniques used to achieve high efficiency are limited to fabrication methods and optical energy requirements. Here, we investigate and demonstrate substantial enhancement in the conversion efficiency of second harmonic generation in a nonlinear crystal via the application of wavefront shaping. In a one dimensional understanding of second harmonic generation, a phase offset applied to the fundamental wave has no effect on the intensity of the generated light. We show that when the pump field is not a plane wave, enhanced conversion efficiency can be controlled by the application of a phase mask to the fundamental beam. This investigation of the dependence of conversion efficiency upon the transverse phase profile of the incident pump laser yields the promise of new ways to enhance nonlinear generation with limited optical energy and without the need for specific fabrication techniques.
Highly-efficient second and third harmonic generation in a monocrystalline lithium niobate microresonator.

Abstract:Nonlinear optics in whispering-gallery-mode (WGM) microresonators have attracted much attention. Owing to strong confinement of the light in a small volume, a WGM microresonator can dramatically boost the strength of light field, giving rise to enhancement of the nonlinear interactions of light with the resonator material. Here, we demonstrate highly efficient second harmonic generation (SHG) and third harmonic generation (THG) in an on-chip monocrystalline lithium niobate (LN) microresonator. Benefitting from a cyclic phase matching scheme for the transverse-electric WGMs, nonlinear wavelength conversion utilizing the largest second-order nonlinear coefficient d33, which has not been demonstrated until now despite of its obvious advantage, is successfully achieved in an X-cut LN microresonator. We obtain high conversion efficiencies in not only the SHG (3.8% mW^-1) but also the THG (0.3% mW^-2) realized through a cascaded sum-frequency process. Our results represent a major step toward the classical and quantum photonic integrated circuits.

Abstract:Slow light is a fascinating physical effect, raising fundamental questions related to our understanding of light-matter interactions as well as offering new possibilities for photonic devices. From the first demonstrations of slow light propagation in ultra-cold atomic gasses, solid-state Ruby and photonic crystal structures, focus has shifted to applications, with slow light offering the ability to enhance and control light-matter interactions. The demonstration of tuneable delay lines, enhanced nonlinearities and spontaneous emission, enlarged spectral sensitivity and increased phase shifts illustrate the possibilities enabled by slow light propagation, with microwave photonics emerging as one of the promising applications. Here, we demonstrate that slow light can be used to control and increase the gain coefficient of an active semiconductor waveguide. The effect was theoretically predicted but not yet experimentally demonstrated. These results show a route towards realizing ultra-compact optical amplifiers for linear and nonlinear applications in integrated photonics and prompts further research into the rich physics of such structures.

Abstract:Slow light, a technology to control the optical signal by reducing the group velocity, has been widely studied to obtain enhanced nonlinearities and increased phase shifts owing to its promoting of the light–matter interaction ability. In this work, a wideband slow light is achieved in a simple one-dimensional fishbone grating waveguide. A flat band indicating slow light with a group index of 13 and bandwidth over 10 nm is obtained by the plane wave expansion calculation, and the corresponding experimental results agree well with the theoretical prediction. A step taper is designed to compensate the coupling loss. The proposed fishbone grating waveguide is a good candidate for wideband slow light devices in light communication.

Abstract:Optical nonlinearity can be enhanced by the combination of highly nonlinear chalcogenide glass and photonic crystal waveguides (PCWs) providing strong optical confinement and slow-light effects. In a Ag-As(2)Se(3) chalcogenide PCW, the effective nonlinear parameter γeff reaches 6.3 × 10(4) W(-1)m(-1), which is 200 times larger than that in Si photonic wire waveguides. In this paper, we report the detailed design, fabrication process, and the linear and nonlinear characteristics of this waveguide at silica fiber communication wavelengths. We show that the waveguide exhibits negligible two-photon absorption, and also high-efficiency self-phase modulation and four-wave mixing, which are assisted by low-dispersion slow light.

Abstract:Integrated photonics provides unprecedented opportunities to pursue advanced nonlinear light sources with low-power consumptions and small footprints in a scalable manner, such as microcombs, chip-scale optical parametric oscillators and integrated quantum light sources. Among a variety of nonlinear optical processes, high-efficiency second harmonic generation (SHG) on-chip is particularly appealing and yet challenging. In this work, we present efficient SHG in highly engineerable semi-nonlinear waveguides consisting of electron-beam resist waveguides and thin-film silicon nitride (SiN)/lithium niobate (LN). By carefully designing octave-separating bound states in the continuum (BICs) for the nonlinear interacting waves in such a hybrid structure, we have simultaneously optimized the losses for both fundamental frequency (FF) and second harmonic (SH) waves and achieved modal phasing matching and maximized the nonlinear modal overlap between the FF and SH waves, which results in an experimental conversion efficiency up to 4.05% W −1 cm −2 . Our work provides a versatile and fabrication-friendly platform to explore on-chip nonlinear optical processes with high efficiency in the context of nanophotonics and quantum optics.
Ultrafast giant enhancement of second harmonic generation through level occupation engineering

Abstract:Optical nonlinearity, especially the second harmonic generation (SHG), is generally weak in materials but has the potential to be applied in high-speed optical computers and energy-efficient artificial intelligence systems. In order to program such photonic circuits, electrical and all-optical modulation mechanisms of optical nonlinearity have been proposed. Among them the electrical methods are bottlenecked by speed, while optical methods like Floquet engineering provides a fast heat-free route, but has only been experimentally shown to suppress SHG. Here we theoretically and experimentally demonstrated an ultrafast enhancement of SHG by 40% on a timescale of $\sim$ 500 femtosecond in van der Waals NiPS$_3$. We performed single-ion model calculations to show that by optically control the electron occupation of different energy levels, the SHG can be enhanced due to different electronic states involved in the SHG process. We then performed temperature-dependent time-resolved measurements in both linear and nonlinear optics, which confirm our calculations. We also discussed the implications for other materials in the transition metal thiophosphates (MPX$_3$) family.

Abstract:In article number 1800288, Rui Luo and co-workers propose a universal design principle to enhance optical parametric generation. By heterogeneous integration of linear and nonlinear materials in the core of a nanophotonic waveguide, the spatial symmetry of the optical nonlinearity can be broken to optimize the mode overlap factor in modal-phase-matched second-harmonic generation, resulting in a dramatically improved conversion efficiency. This approach promises energy efficient photonic signal processing on a variety of integrated platforms.

Abstract:Boosting second-order optical nonlinear frequency conversion over subwavelength thickness has long been pursued through optical resonance in micro- and nanophotonics. However, the availability of thin film materials with high second-order nonlinearity is limited to III-V semiconductors, which have low transparency in the visible. Here, we experimentally demonstrated strongly enhanced second harmonic generation in one-dimensional heterostructure cavities on thin film lithium niobate. A guided-mode resonance resonator and distributed Bragg reflectors are combined for both efficient coupling and electromagnetic field localization. Over 1200 times second harmonic generation enhancement is experimentally realized compared with flat thin film lithium niobate through optimizing the trade-off between quality factor and mode volume, leading to a record high normalized conversion efficiency of 2.03 x 10(-5) cm(2)/GW under 1.92 MW/cm(2) pump intensity. Our approach could inspire the miniaturization and integration of compact resonant nonlinear photonic devices on thin film lithium niobate.

Abstract:We show experimental and theoretical results for enhancement of nonlinear transmission (NT) in moderate finesse cavities filled with nonlinear organic materials (NLOM). Our design for enhancement of nonlinear transmission using micro NLOM cavities compared with reference samples of the same material show that single cavities can enhance the nonlinear response by a factor of 10 or greater under high-absorption conditions. Further enhancement can be achieved in multiple-cavity structures. Other advantages of the cavity structures for nonlinear transmission, such as a higher damage threshold and a broader NT band, are also discussed. Our initial experimental results show a threefold reduction in the nonlinear threshold fluence in a single cavity device compared directly to an identical sample without mirrors, in qualitative agreement with our calculations.

Abstract:In recent years, the phenomenon of optical second harmonic generation (SHG) has attracted significant attention as a pivotal nonlinear optical effect in research. Notably, in low-dimensional materials (LDMs), SHG detection has become an instrumental tool for elucidating nonlinear optical properties due to their pronounced second-order susceptibility and distinct electronic structure. This review offers an exhaustive overview of the generation process and experimental configurations for SHG in such materials. It underscores the latest advancements in harnessing SHG as a sensitive probe for investigating the nonlinear optical attributes of these materials, with a particular focus on its pivotal role in unveiling electronic structures, bandgap characteristics, and crystal symmetry. By analyzing SHG signals, researchers can glean invaluable insights into the microscopic properties of these materials. Furthermore, this paper delves into the applications of optical SHG in imaging and time-resolved experiments. Finally, future directions and challenges toward the improvement in the NLO in LDMs are discussed to provide an outlook in this rapidly developing field, offering crucial perspectives for the design and optimization of pertinent devices.

Third Harmonic Enhancement Harnessing Photoexcitation Unveils New Nonlinearities in Zinc Oxide

Abstract:Nonlinear optical phenomena are at the heart of various technological domains such as high-speed data transfer, optical logic applications, and emerging fields such as non-reciprocal optics and photonic time crystal design. However, conventional nonlinear materials exhibit inherent limitations in the post-fabrication tailoring of their nonlinear optical properties. Achieving real-time control over optical nonlinearities remains a challenge. In this work, we demonstrate a method to switch third harmonic generation (THG), a commonly occurring nonlinear optical response. Third harmonic generation enhancements up to 50 times are demonstrated in zinc oxide films via the photoexcited state generation and tunable electric field enhancement. More interestingly, the enhanced third harmonic generation follows a quadratic scaling with incident power, as opposed to the conventional cubic scaling, which demonstrates a previously unreported mechanism of third harmonic generation. The THG can also be suppressed by modulating the optical losses in the film. This work shows that the photoexcitation of states can not only enhance nonlinearities, but can create new processes for third harmonic generation. Importantly, the proposed method enables real-time manipulation of the nonlinear response of a medium. The process is switchable and reversible, with the modulations occurring at picosecond timescale. Our study paves the way to boost or suppress the nonlinearities of solid-state media, enabling robust, switchable sources for nonlinear optical applications.

Abstract:Summary form only given. Slow light has achieved great progress in waveguide and fibers in room temperature, which could be accelerating the transition of this technique to applications. This talk will review devising methods for tailoring the dispersion of optical materials, such as electromagnetically induced transparency, photonic crystals, and nano-optic resonators over the last decade. And the potential applications of slow light for optical buffering, data synchronization, optical memories, and optical signal processing will be cataloged. Then the interaction between slow light and Sagnac effect is discussed. The concept of the Sagnac effect in a slow-light medium and resonator structure with high group dispersion is investigated. It is found that a slow-light medium can be utilized for relative motion sensing, and a slow-light resonator structure is suitable to detect absolute rotation for navigation purposes. It is noted that the high group dispersion leads to a huge enhancement of the rotation sensor's sensitivity in a resonating structure, and an approach to evaluate and design resonator devices with slow-light property is proposed. Moreover, a folded loop-lattice-based structure is numerically simulated to verify the concept.

Abstract:Optical microcavities are often used to realize enhanced nonlinear optical interactions for highly efficient second-harmonic generation. With increased pump power, the efficiency of nonlinear frequency conversion can be increased further, whereas some other unwanted nonlinear effects will also emerge, leading to complicated dynamics or instability. Here, we study the interplay between cascaded second- and third-order nonlinear processes and investigate their impact on the second-harmonic generation in microcavities. It is found that the nondegenerate optical parametric oscillation (OPO) appears and the presence of a & alefsym;((3)) process can modify the OPO threshold significantly when the multimode cavity is strongly pumped at the fundamental optical mode. One can even break the efficiency limitation of the second-harmonic mode restricted by the OPO by utilizing the interference between the OPO and the four-wave mixing. The present coherent interplay between nonlinear optical processes in the microcavities is conducive to explore new physics in the cavity nonlinear photonics.

Abstract:Detailed numerical analysis and computer simulation of a two-dimensional defective photonic crystal structure fabricated with nonlinear optical materials are carried out. The localized states in the band gap and electric field distributions of such a structure were calculated by the finite-difference time-domain method, and demonstrated a greatly enhanced second harmonic generation with an efficiency of about 4 orders of magnitude higher than that in an ordinary nonlinear crystal.

Abstract:The Stimulated Brillouin Scattering(SBS) threshold, SBS gain spectrum, SBS amplification characteristics and slow light effect based on SBS in high nonlinear fiber(HNLF) are experimentally studied and analyzed. The SBS threshold and gain spectrum of a standard single mode fiber is also measured as a comparison to that of the HNLF. Under a SBS pump light with 100 MHz linewidth, the SBS threshold of the HNLF is 60 mW, the bandwidth of the SBS bandwidth gain spectrum is 150 MHz, the maximum delay experimentally achieved is approximate 15 ns, and the delay spectrum matches the SBS gain spectrum well. All these studies will have value in the realization of future all optical dely line and all optical buffer in the all optical network.
