Abstract:This paper studies the effects of high temperatures on the stiffness of concrete-filled steel tube column to steel beam connections by ABAQUS software. The finite element (FE) modeling is proposed and validated by the experimental results. Based on the FE models of connections, the effects of seven parameters, such as width of stiffening ring, steel ratio, cross-sectional dimension, beam-to-column stiffness ratio, beam-to-column strength ratio, axial load level and column slenderness ratio, on the moment-rotation relation and the stiffness of beam-to-column connection are studied and evaluated. It was found that this kind of composite connections at room temperature exhibit rigid and have high load-carrying capacities and stiffness. However, the load-carrying capacities and stiffness of the beam-to-column connections with an increasing of temperature decrease significantly and they behave semi-rigid. When temperature is 300°C, 500°C, 700°C, and 900°C, the moment capacity of beam-to-column connection respectively decreases 17%, 33%, 54%, and 92% moment capacity of beam-to-column connection at room temperature, while the initial rotation stiffness of beam-to-column connection respectively decreases 12%, 28%, 78%, and 96% initial rotation stiffness of beam-to-column connection at room temperature. © 2007 Taylor & Francis Group.
