Abstract:In this paper an anisotropic interpolation theorem is presented that can be easily used to check the anisotropy of an element. A kind of quasi-Wilson element is considered for second-order problems on narrow quadrilateral meshes for which the usual regularity condition ρ K / h K ≥ c 0 > 0 is not satisfied, where h K is the diameter of the element K and ρ K is the radius of the largest inscribed circle in K. Anisotropic error estimates of the interpolation error and the consistency error in the energy norm and the L 2 -norm are given. Furthermore, we give a Poincare inequality on a trapezoid which improves a result of Zenisek.

Abstract:A two quarter nudsidc node rectangular element first proposed by Barsoum [Int. J. numer. Meth. Engng10, 25 (1976)] and Henshell and Shaw [Int. J. numer. Meth. Engng9, 495 (1975)] (BHS element) is improved with the aid of the improved isoparametric transformation. The one singular point BHS element is changed into a two singular point element which is called an improved BHS element. The shortcoming of low accuracy is overcome to a certain degree. The element can use the common programs on condition that the improved isoparametric transformation has been added. This will not change program structure and does not have many problems in programming. Numerical results showed that the improved BHS element performed better than the BHS element, especially for a small element size.

Abstract:Based on the generalized compatibility condition under constant and linear stress field, a quadrilateral generalized conforming isoparametric element, GC-Q6, for plane stress analysis, is developed. The element GC-Q6 can be regarded as an improved form of Wilson's non-conforming isoparametric element Q6. GC-Q6 can pass the patch test for arbitrary irregular mesh while Q6 can not. GC-Q6 degenerates to Q6 when it is a parallelogram. Numerical examples show that the GC-Q6 element gives more accurate stress solution than the existing non- conforming elements and is less sensitive to geometric distortion.

Abstract:By using nodal and perimeter version generalized conforming conditions, a 4-node quadrilateral axisymmetric element AQACQ6 containing internal parameters is formulated by the Quadrilateral Area Coordinate (QAC) method. Then, by modifying its nonconforming strain matrix, another new element AQACA6M being of ability to pass the strict form constant stress/strain patch test is thusly constructed. It is shown that the displacement fields of the two new elements both possess second-order completeness in global coordinate system. Numerical results indicate that the new QAC axisymmetric elements exhibit better performance than other conventional isoparametric models in mesh distortion and almost incompressible problems. The efficiency of the QAC method and the generalized conforming theory for developing simple, effective and reliable finite elements are again demonstrated.
THE STUDY ON GENERALIZED CONFORMING 6-NODE CURVED QUADRILATERAL ELEMENT

Abstract:Three 6-node curved quadrilateral elements, ATFM6, M6 and Q6λ10, are obtained based on generalized conforming principle. Displacement field in plane Cartesian coordinate system of elements ATFM6 and M6 are constructed from analytical trial functions (ATF) and complete cubic polynomial, respectively. Element Q6λ10 is obtained by adding ten generalized bubble displacement terms to compatible isoparametric element Q6. All the three elements can pass patch test under arbitrary curved quadrilateral mesh. Numerical experiments show that they have excellent accuracy and insensitivity to geometric distortion.

Abstract:We consider anisotropic adaptive methods based on a metric related to the Hessian of the solution. We propose a metric targeted to the minimization of interpolation error gradient for a nonconforming linear finite element approximation of a given piecewise regular function on a polyhedral domain Ω of Rd,d≥2. We also present an algorithm generating a sequence of asymptotically quasi‐optimal meshes relative to such a nonconforming discretization and give numerical asymptotic behavior of the error reduction produced by the generated mesh. Numerical experiments are performed to generate mesh minimizing interpolation error gradient of benchmark functions, and nonconforming approximation of solution of a PDE as convection diffusion equation selected for this note.

Abstract:A new quadratic Hermite-type triangular finite element is conceived to solve a class of two-dimensional second-order elliptic boundary value problems. Its error estimates on anisotropic meshes are developed. Furthermore, we verify that some conditions set to the meshes contribute to the proof of its superconvergence properties, which can improve the approximation results. Numerical examples are given to confirm our theoretical analysis.

Abstract:A criterion is proposed first to quantitatively check the interpolation precision of quadrilateral elements. With this criterion, the necessary geometry constraints are derived for 8-node (Q8) element to exactly attain quadratic interpolation precision. The study is next to focus on improvement of the Q8 element with a bilinear configuration and the Q8α element is subsequently presented by slightly modifying the Q8 element. Theoretical analysis is conducted as well to confirm the interpolation precision predicted in the Q8α element. Through typical numerical examples, it is concluded that of all the tested elements the second-order integrated Q8α element is the most robust one for all cases.

Abstract:Mesh adaptation for finite element approximation is a procedure used in numerous applications. The use of thin and long anisotropic triangles improves the efficiency of the procedure. When piecewise linear finite elements are used, the aspect ratio for mesh adaptation is generally dictated by the absolute value of the (estimated) hessian matrix of the approximated function. We give in this paper the corresponding aspect ratio for piecewise quadratic finite elements.
Weak discrete maximum principle of isoparametric finite element methods in curvilinear polyhedra

Abstract:The weak maximum principle of the isoparametric finite element method is proved for the Poisson equation under the Dirichlet boundary condition in a (possibly concave) curvilinear polyhedral domain with edge openings smaller than $\pi$, which include smooth domains and smooth deformations of convex polyhedra. The proof relies on the analysis of a dual elliptic problem with a discontinuous coefficient matrix arising from the isoparametric finite elements. Therefore, the standard $H^2$ elliptic regularity which is required in the proof of the weak maximum principle in the literature does not hold for this dual problem. To overcome this difficulty, we have decomposed the solution into a smooth part and a nonsmooth part, and estimated the two parts by $H^2$ and $W^{1,p}$ estimates, respectively. As an application of the weak maximum principle, we have proved a maximum-norm best approximation property of the isoparametric finite element method for the Poisson equation in a curvilinear polyhedron. The proof contains non-trivial modifications of Schatz's argument due to the non-conformity of the iso-parametric finite elements, which requires us to construct a globally smooth flow map which maps the curvilinear polyhedron to a perturbed larger domain on which we can establish the $W^{1,\infty}$ regularity estimate of the Poisson equation uniformly with respect to the perturbation.

Abstract:In this paper, the compactness of quasi-conforming element spaces and the—convergence of quasi-conforming element method are discussed. The well-known Rellich compactness theorem is generalized to the sequences of quasi-conforming element spaces with certain properties, and the generalized Poincare inequality. The generalized Friedrichs inequality and the generalized inequality of Poincare-Friedrichs are proved true for them. The error estimates are also given. It is shown that the quasi-conforming element method is convergent if the quasi-conforming element spaces have the approximability and the strong continuity, and satisfy the rank condition of element and pass the test IPT. As practical examples, 6-parameter, 9-paramenter, 12-paramenter, 15-parameter, 18-parameter and 21-paramenter quasi-conforming elements are shown to be convergent, and their L2′2(Ω)-errors are O(hτ), O(hτ), O(h τ 2 ), O(h τ 2 ), O(h τ ′ ), and O(h τ 4 ) respectively.

Abstract:Based on H1-Galerkin mixed finite element method with nonconforming quasi-Wilson element, a numerical approximate scheme is established for pseudo-hyperbolic equations under arbitrary quadrilateral meshes. The corresponding optimal order error estimate is derived by the interpolation technique instead of the generalized elliptic projection which is necessary for classical error estimates of finite element analysis.

Abstract:This paper addresses the problem of spherical parameterization, i.e., mapping a given polygonal surface of genus-zero onto a unit sphere. There exist some methods to deal with the problem in literatures. In the paper, we construct an improved algorithm for parameterization of genus-zero meshes and aim to obtain high-quality surfaces fitting with PHT-splines. This parameterization consists of minimizing discrete harmonic energy subject to spherical constraints and solving the constrained optimization by the Lagrange-Newton method. We also present several examples which show that parametric surfaces of PHT-splines can be constructed adoptively and efficiently to fit given meshes associated with our parameterization results.

Report on a Novel Concave-Admissible Quadrilateral 8 Node Plane Element

The B-net method is used for calculation of area integral items and gives results with high precision within convex and even concave quadrangles. Numerical analysis on the element shows its trial functions represent exactly all polynomial terms of order less or equal to 2 in the Cartesian coordinates, which is also proved in numerical experiment described in Fig.1. Numerical results and comparisons with existing elements show that present element exhibits a remarkable robustness and insensitivity with extreme mesh distortions, as well as good accuracy. For the Cook beam problem, satisfactory results can be obtained when the mesh become severely distorted, as shown in Fig. 2. Abstract:The orientation-preservation condition, i.e., the Jacobian determinant of the deformation gradient det ∇ u being required to be positive, is a natural physical constraint in elasticity as well as in many other fields. It is well known that the constraint can often cause serious difficulties in both theoretical analysis and numerical computation, especially when the material is subject to large deformations. We derive a set of necessary and sufficient conditions for the quadratic iso-parametric finite element interpolation functions of cavity solutions to be orientation preserving on a class of radially symmetric large expansion accommodating triangulations. The result provides a practical quantitative guide for meshing in the neighborhood of a cavity and shows that the orientation-preservation can be achieved with a reasonable number of total degrees of freedom by the quadratic iso-parametric finite element method.

Abstract:In this paper we establish the quasi-optimal convergence of the adaptive nonconforming Wilson element on the rectangular mesh. The main ingredients are a new a posteriori error estimator and a crucial observation that there is some special orthogonality between the conforming part and the nonconforming part in the energy inner product, which helps us to show the quasi-orthogonality and the discrete reliability. Finally we integrate these components in a usual way to achieve the quasi-optimal convergence.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the finite element approximation for a parabolic problem on a smooth domain $\Omega \subset \mathbb{R}^N$ with the inhomogeneous Neumann boundary condition. We emphasize that the domain can be non-convex in general. We implement the finite element method for this problem by constructing a family of polygonal or polyhedral domains $\{ \Omega_h \}_h$ that approximate the original domain $\Omega$. The main result of this study is the $L^\infty$-error estimate for this approximation. We shall show that the convergence rate is not optimal for higher order elements since the symmetric difference $\Omega \bigtriangleup \Omega_h$ is not empty in general. In order to address the effect of the symmetric difference of domains, we introduce the tubular neighborhood of the original boundary $\partial\Omega$. We will also present a slightly new approach to establish the $L^\infty$-error estimate. Moreover, we present the smoothing property for the discrete parabolic semigroup and the spatially discretized maximal regularity as corollaries of the main result.

Abstract:In the field of CAGD/CAD, interpolation curve plays an important role in shape representation and shape design. Based on the traditional quintic Hermite interpolation curve, this paper proposes a novel class of quintic generalized Hermite interpolation curve (QG-Hermite interpolation curve, for short) with local shape parameters, which can satisfy C2 continuity automatically. Since each segment of the constructed curve has independent shape parameters, and its shape can be adjusted locally or globally by modifying the shape parameters. First, to obtain an interpolation curve satisfying certain specific geometric requirements such as the approximate shortest arc length, the strain energy minimization or the curvature variation energy minimization, etc., three shape optimization models of the QG-Hermite interpolation curve are established. Second, an improved gray wolf optimization (I-GWO) algorithm is used to solve the shape optimization models so as to determine the optimal shape parameters. Finally, the modeling examples show that the proposed method is effective and applicable in shape designing.
