Abstract:Expressing complex curves with simple parametric curve segments is widely used in computer graphics, CAD and so on. This paper applies rational quadratic B-spline curves to give a global C 1 continuous approximation to a large class of plane parametric curves including rational parametric curves. Its application in approximate implicitization is also explored. The approximated parametric curve is first divided into intrinsic triangle convex segments which can be efficiently approximated with rational quadratic Bézier curves. With this approximation, we keep the convexity and the cusp (sharp) points of the approximated curve with simple computations. High accuracy approximation is achieved with a small number of quadratic segments. Experimental results are given to demonstrate the operation and efficiency of the algorithm.
High Accuracy Approximation of Helices by Quintic Curves

Abstract:In this paper we present methods for approximating a helix segment by quintic Bézier curves or quintic rational Bézier curves based on the geometric Hermite interpolation technique in space. The fitting curve interpolates the curvatures as well as the Frenet frames of the original helix at both ends. We achieve a high accuracy of the approximation by giving a proper parametrization of the curve, and the approximation order of the height function along the helix axis is 9 provided that the screw angle of the helix is fixed. Numerical examples are also presented to illustrate the efficiency of the new method.

Abstract:The purpose of the paper is to derive some properties of the multiquadric trigonometric B-spline quasi-interpolant. Firstly, the paper captures its approximation orders for high-order derivatives. Based on the error estimate, one can choose the shape parameter properly such that the quasi-interpolant gives optimal approximations to high-order derivatives. Moreover, the approximation orders also show that (from the theoretical point of view) the considered quasi-interpolant can be applied when the approximation of high-order derivatives is needed, i.e., numerical solution of some PDEs, construction of Lyapunov function, etc. Secondly, the paper derives some shape preserving properties of the quasi-interpolant. These properties suggest that the quasi-interpolant may be used in the geometric modeling (CAD, CAM for instance) that requires shape preservation. Finally, to illustrate the validity of the results, some numerical examples are presented. Both theoretical and numerical results demonstrate that the quasi-interpolant cannot only provide excellent approximations to high-order derivatives, but also preserve the shapes well.
Shape Aware Normal Interpolation for Curved Surface Shading from Polyhedral Approximation

Abstract:Independent interpolation of local surface patches and local normal patches is an efficient way for fast rendering of smooth curved surfaces from rough polyhedral meshes. However, the independently interpolating normals may deviate greatly from the analytical normals of local interpolating surfaces, and the normal deviation may cause severe rendering defects when the surface is shaded using the interpolating normals. In this paper we propose two novel normal interpolation schemes along with interpolation of cubic Bézier triangles for rendering curved surfaces from rough triangular meshes. Firstly, the interpolating normal is computed by a Gregory normal patch to each Bézier triangle by a new definition of quadratic normal functions along cubic space curves. Secondly, the interpolating normal is obtained by blending side-vertex normal functions along side-vertex parametric curves of the interpolating Bézier surface. The normal patches by these two methods can not only interpolate given normals at vertices or boundaries of a triangle but also match the shape of the local interpolating surface very well. As a result, more realistic shading results are obtained by either of the two new normal interpolation schemes than by the traditional quadratic normal interpolation method for rendering rough triangular meshes.

Abstract:Based on the property of Jacobi polynomials and the solution of conditional extremum,the approximate merging of 4 neighbouring triangular Bézier surfaces with boundary constraints are discussed.With the help of the orthonormality of Jacobi polynomials and the Bernstein-Jacobi transformation matrix,the distance function with respect to L2 norm between the surfaces before and after approximate merging is obtained.Meanwhile,based on the boundary constraints and the boundary continuity at three corners,control points are constrained by linear equations.With the help of Lagrange multipliers,we obtain the optimal approximate merging surface with minimal distance.Both the control points of approximate merging surfaces and the precise error of approximation are expressed explicitly in matrix form.The degree elevation could reduce the merging error.Finally,several numerical examples demonstrate the effectiveness and validity of the algorithm.

Abstract:In this paper, we develop a multiquadric (MQ) quasi-interpolation which has the properties of linear reproducing and preserving monotonicity. Moreover, we give its approximation error by theoretic analysis and illustrate the effect by means of two examples. One of the examples is to approach the linear combination of two sine functions with different frequencies. Another is to approximate a function with discontinuity. From the results of the examples, we believe that the present MQ quasi-interpolation is feasible.

Abstract:In this article, we construct a novel self-referential fractal multiquadric function which is symmetric about the origin. The scaling factors are suitably restricted to preserve the differentiability and the convexity of the underlying classical multiquadric function. Based on the translates of a fractal multiquadric function defined on a grid, we propose two fractal quasi-interpolants and to approximate smooth and irregular functions. We study the convergence of and to f using uniform error estimates. We investigate the linear polynomial reproducing property, convexity/concavity and monotonicity features of these quasi-interpolation operators. The advantages of fractal quasi-interpolants over the classical quasi-interpolants are demonstrated by various examples.

Abstract:Quasi-interpolation is very useful in the study of approximation theory and its applications, since it can yield solutions directly without the need to solve any linear system of equations. Based on the good performance (simple to evaluate) of multiquadric functions, the advantages (approximation order, convexity and monotonlcity preserving) of multiquadric quasi-interpolation have been widely discussed. However, it is usually only for the approximation properties of the function itself and the good properties for derivatives, whereas the high order derivatives have been largely ignored. In this paper, we go further into the approximation properties to the k-th derivatives by using multiquadric quasi-interpolation. Furthermore, we develop two kinds of multiquadric quasi-interpolation schemes on bounded interval [x0,xN], whose derivatives converge to the corresponding derivatives of the approximated functions. Finally, the numerical experiments are presented to confirm the accuracy of the presented scheme. Both theoretical results and numerical examples show this scheme provides good accuracy even if the data points in [x0,xN] are irregularly distributed.
Stability of Multiquadric Quasi-Interpolation to Approximate High Order Derivatives

Abstract:Numerical simulation of the high order derivatives based on the sampling data is an important and basic problem in numerical approximation, especially for solving the differential equations numerically. The classical method is the divided difference method. However, it has been shown strongly unstable in practice. Actually, it can only be used to simulate the lower order derivatives in applications. To simulate the high order derivatives, this paper suggests a new method using multiquadric quasi-interpolation. The stability of the multiquadric quasi-interpolation method is compared with the classical divided difference method. Moreover, some numerical examples are presented to confirm the theoretical results. Both theoretical results and numerical examples show that the multiquadric quasi-interpolation method is much stabler than the divided difference method. This property shows that multiquadric quasi-interpolation method is an efficient tool to construct an approximation of high order derivatives based on scattered sampling data even with noise.
High Accuracy Quasi-Interpolation using a new class of generalized Multiquadrics

Abstract:A new generalization of multiquadric functions $\phi(x)=\sqrt{c^{2d}+||x||^{2d}}$, where $x\in\mathbb{R}^n$, $c\in \mathbb{R}$, $d\in \mathbb{N}$, is presented to increase the accuracy of quasi-interpolation further. With the restriction to Euclidean spaces of odd dimensionality, the generalization can be used to generate a quasi-Lagrange operator that reproduces all polynomials of degree $2d-1$. In contrast to the classical multiquadric, the convergence rate of the quasi-interpolation operator can be significantly improved by a factor $h^{2d-n-1}$, where $h>0$ represents the grid spacing. Among other things, we compute the generalized Fourier transform of this new multiquadric function. Finally, an infinite regular grid is employed to analyse the properties of the aforementioned generalization in detail.

Abstract:The shape-preserving quadratic spline interpolations introduced by Schumaker need users to adjust the slopes to satisfy monotone condition, We study carefully the reasons of requiring users to adjust the slopes and introduce a new method that does not need the users to adjust the slopes. The new method first finds out the intervals that do not satisfy monotone conditions, then chooses additional split points that are given suitable slopes to satisfying monotone conditions, at last constructs shape preserving polynomial interpolation based on the method of Schumaker. Examples are given to illustrate the efficiency of the interpolation.
Quasi-interpolation for high-dimensional function approximation

Abstract:The paper proposes a general quasi-interpolation scheme for high-dimensional function approximation. To facilitate error analysis, we view our quasi-interpolation as a two-step procedure. In the first step, we approximate a target function by a purpose-built convolution operator (with an error term referred to as convolution error). In the second step, we discretize the underlying convolution operator using certain quadrature rules at the given sampling data sites (with an error term called discretization error). The final approximation error is obtained as an optimally balanced sum of these two errors, which in turn views our quasi-interpolation as a regularization technique that balances convolution error and discretization error. As a concrete example, we construct a sparse grid quasi-interpolation scheme for high-dimensional function approximation. Both theoretical analysis and numerical implementations provide evidence that our quasi-interpolation scheme is robust and capable of mitigating the curse of dimensionality for approximating high-dimensional functions.

Abstract:3D data field reconstruction is a fundamental and an important step for volume modeling and analysis. The precision of reconstruction affects directly the accuracy of the following process such as data resampling and analysis. Based on the quasi-interpolation theory, we develop a novel estimate of the reconstruction error which fully explores the intrinsic information embedded in the volume data and have arrived at a minimum of the reconstruction error under the L2 measurement by conducting a global optimization. Experimental results on various examples demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm in reducing the reconstruction error and retaining the high-frequency details of the dada field.
