Abstract:It is a common view that climate change has influenced hydrological elements such as precipi-tation,temperature and river flow.Zhejiang Province has witnessed the climate extremes with high fre-quency in recent years and it has drawn a lot attention of hydrologists.Low flow hydrology is a very im-portant part of hydrology.It is quite meaningful to analyze the low flow.The historical daily precipitati-on,temperature and flow in 1975 -2004 in the Jinhua River Basin are used as baseline data in this stud-y.Climate projections from Hadgem2_ES of CMIP5 for 2070-2100 are downscaled to station-scale pro-jections based on a multi-site statistical downscaling model GIST.The flows in future period are generated by a lumped hydrological model GR4J.Two typical low flow indices 7Q10 and 30Q10 are calculated and compared.The results show that the two indices have obvious rising trends,implying a better situation in low flow periods under climate change.

Abstract:The influence of climate change on midlatitude North Atlantic landfalling autumn storms is investigated using a relatively high‐resolution mesoscale atmosphere‐ocean coupled model system. Atmospheric boundary conditions for autumn storm simulations by this coupled model system are given by the Canadian second‐generation Coupled Global Climate Model (CGCM2), following the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change IS92a scenario. The control and high‐CO2 boundary conditions are obtained from CGCM2 simulations representing the present climate (1975–1994), and a future climate change scenario (2040–2059), corresponding to a doubling of greenhouse gases. An understanding of the possible influences of climate change on the storm climate is achieved through our simulations. The impact of climate change is seen in slightly decreased intensities in landfalling cyclones (about 5 hPa) resulting from the competition between warming provided by the climate change scenario and modest cooling around the storm center induced mainly by dynamic cooling. An additional impact is that cyclone tracks tend to shift poleward.
Impacts of climatological change on storm surge in Zhejiang coastal water

Abstract:The variations of storm surge during typhoon in Zhejiang costal water based on the data of temperature, tidal height and storm surge in weather stations and tidal stations during the past 50 years are described and analysed. The results demonstrate that the rise in sea surface temperature and sea-level will be accompanied by a corresponding increase in the numbers of typhoon, the value of setup, higher than the warning elevation and the extreme annual high tidal elevation. The analysis also reveals that the higher temperature causes the rise of risk of storm surge disaster. With the acceleration of temperature rise the number of typhoon and the frequency of maximum storm surge which is more than 300 centimeters have doubled since 2000. Therefore, the disaster risk caused by storm surge in Zhejiang coastal water from the point of the climatological change is analysed. This information would be a value to researcher for future disaster preventing and mitigating and storm surge forecasting.
Future Changes in the Impact of North Pacific Midlatitude Oceanic Frontal Intensity on the Wintertime Storm Track in CMIP5 Models

Abstract:The storm track and oceanic front play an important role in the midlatitude air–sea interaction. In this study, future changes in the impact of the North Pacific midlatitude oceanic frontal intensity on the wintertime storm track are projected based on climate model outputs from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 (CMIP5). The performance of 13 CMIP5 models is evaluated, and it is found that a majority of these models are capable of reproducing the northward intensification of the storm track in response to the strengthened oceanic front. The ensemble means of outputs from six best models under three Representative Concentration Pathway (RCP) scenarios (RCP2.6, RCP4.5, and RCP8.5) are compared with the results of the historical simulation, and future changes are projected. It is found that the impact of the oceanic frontal intensity on the storm track tends to get stronger and extends further westward in a warming climate, and the largest increase appears in the RCP8.5 run. Further analysis reveals that the stronger impact of the oceanic front on the storm track in the future may be partially attributed to the greater oceanic frontal impact on the near-surface baroclinicity, which is mainly related to the intensified oceanic frontal impact on the meridional potential temperature gradient under the climate change scenario. However, this process can hardly explain the increasing impact of the oceanic front on the upstream of the storm track.

Abstract:This study explores the characteristics of the air‐sea interactions and extratropical autumn storms in the northwest Atlantic. Simulations are performed with a relatively fine resolution coupled atmosphere‐ocean model system. The model system consists of the Canadian Mesoscale Compressible Community atmospheric model coupled to a recent version of the Princeton Ocean model. Atmospheric boundary conditions for storm simulations are given by the Canadian Climate Centre model, Second Generation Coupled Global Climate Model (CGCM2), following the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change IS92a scenario conditions. The CGCM2 control conditions are obtained from simulated years 1975–1994. Our results show that interactions between extratropical storms and the upper ocean are affected by the upper ocean, latent and sensible heat fluxes across the air‐sea interface, and the atmospheric structure, which propagates relative to the ocean surface as storms move along their storm tracks. Three types of numerical storm experiments are conducted, for storms that (1) make landfall, (2) move along the coastline without landfall, and (3) remain over the open ocean. Our results suggest that the locations of the maximum storm‐induced sea surface temperature (SST) cooling are mainly dominated by the upper ocean thermostructure. The storm's intensity, as represented by its maximum wind speed, can cause further SST cooling. In turn, the upper ocean can reduce storm intensity by as much as 4–5 hPa in minimum sea level pressure, or 2–4 m s−1 in surface winds. Although the impacts of these effects are most notable in the lower atmospheric boundary layer, they extend to the top of the troposphere.
Extreme Snow Events along the Coast of the Northeast United States: Potential Changes Due to Global Warming

Abstract:Winter extreme snowstorm events along the coast of the northeast United States have significant impacts on social and economic activities, and their potential changes under global warming are of great concern. Here, we adopted the pseudo-global warming approach to investigate the responses of 93 events identified in our previous observational analysis. The study was conducted by contrasting two sets of WRF simulations for each event: the first set driven by the ERA-Interim reanalysis and the second set by that data superimposed with mean-climate changes simulated from HiRAM historical (1980-2004) and future (2075-99; RCP8.5) runs. Results reveal that the warming together with increased moisture tends to decrease the snowfall along the coast but increase the rainfall throughout the region. For example, the number of events having daily snow water equivalent larger than 10 mm day(-1) at Boston, Massachusetts; New York City, New York; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; and Washington, D.C., is decreased by 47%, 46%, 30%, and 33%, respectively. The compensating changes in snowfall and rainfall lead to a total-precipitation increase in the three more-southern cities but a decrease in Boston. In addition, the southwestward shift of regional precipitation distribution is coherent with the enhancement (reduction) of upward vertical motion in the south (north) and the movement of cyclone centers (westward in 58% of events and southward in 72%). Finally, perhaps more adversely, because of the northward retreat of the 0 degrees C line and the expansion of the near-freezing zone, the number of events with mixed rain and snow and freezing precipitation in the north (especially the inland area) is increased.
Impacts of North Pacific Subtropical and Subarctic Oceanic Frontal Zones on the Wintertime Atmospheric Large-Scale Circulations

Abstract:An oceanic frontal zone is a confluent region of warm and cool ocean currents, characterized by a strong meridional gradient of sea surface temperature (SST). High-resolution SST observations show that the wintertime North Pacific exhibits a unique double-oceanic-front structure, with a subtropical frontal zone (STFZ) and a subarctic frontal zone (SAFZ), whose impacts on the weather and climate over the East Asia-North Pacific-North American region need further investigation. In this study, we conduct groups of multiyear and ensemble simulations using a WRF high-resolution regional climate model, through which the different impacts of the STFZ and SAFZ on the wintertime atmospheric circulations are identified and compared. Our multiyear simulations show that the STFZ, although with weaker intensity, exerts evident and consistent impacts on the storm track and westerly jet in the North Pacific by enhancing and elongating the eddy activity, zonal wind, and Aleutian low. The SAFZ exhibits coherent impacts on the low-level atmospheric baroclinicity and storm track; however, its impacts on the upper-level storm track and atmospheric circulations are divergent, exhibiting strong year-by-year difference. Our study suggests that the SAFZ's impacts on the atmospheric circulations strongly depend on the background mean state, which contributes to the divergent impacts of the SAFZ. Furthermore, our results highlight the role of diabatic heating for the above different impacts of the STFZ and SAFZ on the atmosphere. We argue that the much deeper diabatic heating induced by the STFZ, via affecting the baroclinicity through the whole troposphere, can exert consistent influence on eddy activities and atmospheric circulations.

Abstract:Climate change poses significant challenges to urban environments affecting both flood risks and stormwater pollutant loadings. However, studies on variations in stormwater runoff quantity and quality in cold regions, which are highly sensitive to climate change, are notably limited. Integrating climatic, hydrologic, and hydraulic modelling, the study assesses the potential impacts of climate change on stormwater runoff volume and pollutant dynamics in a Canadian urban watershed (Calgary). A two-year field program was conducted to support the calibration and validation of the Storm Water Management Model (SWMM). Intensity-duration-frequency curves were employed to evaluate the impacts of climate change on peak flow rate and flooding duration. In addition, typical dry, average, and wet years were applied to continuously simulate stormwater runoff quantity and quality during the 2050s and 2080s. The results suggest substantial increases in peak flow rates and flooding durations, particularly for the 5-year return period rainfall, with 1-h, 4-h, and 24-h peak inflow rates increasing by 74.3% (170.7%), 89.2% (158.4%), and 64.1% (102.8%) in the 2050s (2080s) Furthermore, the runoff quantity is projected to rise by 2.4-10.2% in the 2050s and 11.8-17.5% in the 2080s. Total suspended solids (TSS), total nitrogen (TN), and total phosphorus (TP) loadings are anticipated to increase by 2.0-36.1%, 3.1-21.4%, and 4.1-20.7%, respectively. As a result, the current stormwater system could overload and stormwater quality is likely to deteriorate under the impact of climate change. The findings are beneficial for cold regions to develop adaptive strategies that enhance urban water security and environmental sustainability under climate change.

Abstract:Changes in the volume transport of Atlantic water into the Arctic Ocean can affect the heat and mass balance in the central Arctic Ocean. To understand the impacts of Arctic storms on the inflow through Fram Strait, we implemented the NEMO ocean model for the Arctic Ocean, to simulate the decadal variations of the water volume transport through Fram Strait. The simulations suggest that the water inflow tends to be weaker in the decades of the 1960 and 2010s but stronger in the 1980s. The decadal variation is associated with decadal variability of the storm density in the Greenland Sea. When there is an increased storm density near Fram Strait, the southerly wind anomalies dominate the Atlantic water pathway. As a response, there is an increased Atlantic inflow through Fram Strait.

Abstract:Abstract Pronounced changes in the Arctic environment add a new potential driver of anomalous weather patterns in midlatitudes that affect billions of people. Recent studies of these Arctic/midlatitude weather linkages, however, state inconsistent conclusions. A source of uncertainty arises from the chaotic nature of the atmosphere. Thermodynamic forcing by a rapidly warming Arctic contributes to weather events through changing surface heat fluxes and large-scale temperature and pressure gradients. But internal shifts in atmospheric dynamics—the variability of the location, strength, and character of the jet stream, blocking, and stratospheric polar vortex (SPV)—obscure the direct causes and effects. It is important to understand these associated processes to differentiate Arctic-forced variability from natural variability. For example in early winter, reduced Barents/Kara Seas sea-ice coverage may reinforce existing atmospheric teleconnections between the North Atlantic/Arctic and central Asia, and affect downstream weather in East Asia. Reduced sea ice in the Chukchi Sea can amplify atmospheric ridging of high pressure near Alaska, influencing downstream weather across North America. In late winter southward displacement of the SPV, coupled to the troposphere, leads to weather extremes in Eurasia and North America. Combined tropical and sea ice conditions can modulate the variability of the SPV. Observational evidence for Arctic/midlatitude weather linkages continues to accumulate, along with understanding of connections with pre-existing climate states. Relative to natural atmospheric variability, sea-ice loss alone has played a secondary role in Arctic/midlatitude weather linkages; the full influence of Arctic amplification remains uncertain.

Abstract:It is well known that hurricane intensity is influenced by factors such as the storm's initial intensity, the spatial extent of the storm, the thermodynamic state of the atmosphere through which it moves, the storm propagation speed, and sea surface fluxes along the storm track. Although several of these factors are also known to modulate the strength of midlatitude cyclone systems, little is known about the impact of air-sea interactions on storms outside the Tropics. To investigate the atmosphere-ocean dynamics of midlatitude North Atlantic storms, the Canadian Mesoscale Compressible Community (MC2) atmospheric model is coupled to the Princeton Ocean Model. Case studies include midlatitude extratropical storm Earl ( 1998) and an intense winter storm from January 2000, hereafter denoted Superbomb. On one hand, late-summer storms such as Earl encounter a thin mixed layer and produce a cold wake by inducing strong currents. Sea surface temperatures (SSTs) can be depressed as much as 5degreesC or more. On the other hand, winter storms such as Superbomb occur when the mixed layer is quite deep. Although impacts on SSTs and the upper-ocean temperature profile tend to be weak, about 1degreesC or so, storm-induced ocean currents can be large. In the specific cases of Earl and Superbomb, little impact on cyclone strength was detected.
Northern hemisphere storm tracks in strong AO anomaly winters

Abstract:Northern Hemisphere winter 300 hPa storm tracks/baroclinic waves and their energetics during strong Arctic Oscillation (AO) anomaly events are investigated. It is shown that during strong positive AO anomaly winters, the Atlantic storm track intensifies significantly and shifts northward and far downstream while Pacific storm track extends westward. Baroclinic waves over the Atlantic propagate along central North Atlantic during strong negative AO anomaly winters while during strong positive AO anomaly winters, waves over the Atlantic split into two branches. Distributions of the kinetic energy and energy conversions of different spatial scale over the storm track regions assume different characteristics for different AO phases. Abstract:Rigorous statistical methods are used to examine changes in the timing of heavy storms for various storm durations, to assess the degree to which climate change has influenced heavy precipitation events. The findings indicate that the timing of heavy storms (from 5-min to 24-h duration events in Ontario, Canada) is indicating that they are now predominantly occurring earlier within the calendar year. An example of the situation is that within the period from 1960 to 2017, the mean occurrence times of heavy storms have advanced by 44 days, with maximum and minimum time advances of 86 and 21 days, respectively. Trend analysis, including the Mann-Kendall test, linear regression, and Sen's slope method, all show that the times of heavy storms have advanced to earlier times within the calendar year. These earlier times of heavy storms will influence the natural and anthropogenic activities such as crop planning, drought management, and groundwater replenishment. This research provides new evidence and dimensions regarding the understanding of climate change, particularly related to the timing of heavy storms and various adaptation strategies (e.g., flood prevention and soil conservation).

Contrasting Responses of Hailstorms to Anthropogenic Climate Change in Different Synoptic Weather Systems

Abstract:Hailstones and extreme precipitation generate substantial economic losses across the United States (US) and the globe. Their strong association with short‐lived, intense convective storms poses a great challenge to predict their future changes. Here we conducted model simulations at 1.2 km grid spacing for severe convective storms with large hail and heavy precipitation that occurred in two typical types of synoptic‐scale environments in spring seasons over the central US under both current and future climate conditions. We find that the responses of large hail (diameters > 2.5 cm) to anthropogenic climate change (ACC) are markedly different between the two types of synoptic‐scale environments, with over 110% increase in large hail occurrences for the frontal systems, whereas less than 30% increase for the Great Plains low‐level jet (GPLLJ) systems. This is explained by the larger increase in convective intensity and updraft width and a smaller increase in warm cloud depth in the frontal storms compared with the GPLLJ storms. Interestingly, the occurrences and intensity of heavy precipitation (rain rate > 20 mm h‐1) in both types of systems are similarly sensitive to ACC (e.g., 40% and 33% increases in the occurrences for the frontal and GPLLJ systems, respectively). These results might have important implications for predicting and managing risks for future hail and flash floods.
The role of waves, sea spray and the upper ocean in midlatitude storm development

Abstract:The use of coupled atmosphere-wave-sea spray ocean model system to evaluate the impact of wave drag, sea surface and upper ocean sea surface temperature on storm development was described. The sea spray enhanced latent and sensible heat fluxes and wind-generated waves produced enhanced sea surface roughness. The maximum spray impact occur in small local areas near storm center at maximum winds. The maximum wave impacts were widespread in the areas dominated by rapidly-varying winds with roughened sea surface and enhanced Charnock parameters. The impact on sea surface and wave drag on storm was found to be small and impact on air-sea fluxes can be large.
Impacts of the subarctic frontal zone on the North Pacific storm track in the cold season: an observational study

Abstract:In this study, potential impacts of the North Pacific subarctic frontal zone (SAFZ) variation, including its intensity variation and meridional shift, upon the subseasonally varying North Pacific storm track are investigated by using the 100-year reanalysis data sets. Regression analysis indicates that the changes in the SAFZ intensity and meridional position have significant influence on the North Pacific storm track, which intensifies with the strengthening of the SAFZ and moves northwards following the northwards shift of the SAFZ. However, the storm-track response pattern exhibits distinct differences from one calendar month to another. Specifically, the storm-track response to the SAFZ intensity variation is strongest in February and March; while its response to the SAFZ meridional shift is most pronounced in November and December. However, the storm-track response is relatively weak in January. Further analysis shows that the intensified (or northwards shifted) SAFZ would result in changes in the near-surface baroclinicity and hence affects the storm track, while the weak storm-track response in January is not the result of the anomalous near-surface baroclinicity. The investigation of the local energetics reveals that changes in the baroclinic energy conversion (BCEC) associated with the SAFZ variation are consistent with the storm-track anomalies, indicating that the BCEC plays a crucial role in modulating the subseasonal changes in the storm-track response. In January, the weakened BCEC contributes to the reduced storm-track response to the SAFZ variation.

Abstract:This study investigated how ocean optical properties and solar attenuation may affect the upper ocean temperature structure and ocean heat content (OHC). We employed a realistic three-dimensional ocean circulation model for the northwestern Atlantic to simulate ocean states during the active Atlantic hurricane season of 2017. Sensitivity experiments were performed by coupling the ocean circulation prediction with either a conventional water type-based solar attenuation model or an inherent optical properties (IOP)-based model. Validations against in-situ ocean temperature observations and remote sensing-derived OHC showed that ocean simulations using the IOP-based model outperformed simulations using the conventional water type-based model in predicting sea surface temperature, upper ocean thermal structure, and OHC. An OHC-hurricane intensity relationship derived for five major hurricanes in 2017 suggests that the ocean optical properties and the application of an appropriate solar attenuation model are important for the forecast of hurricane intensity.

Impact of Seasonality in the North Atlantic Jet Stream and Storm Migration on the Seasonality of Hurricane Translation Speed Changes

Abstract:Tropical cyclone (TC) translation speed (TCTS) can affect the duration of TC-related disasters, which is critical to coastal and inland areas. The long-term variation of TCTS and its relationship to the variability of the midlatitude jet stream and storm migration is discussed here for storms near the North Atlantic coast during 1948-2019. Our results reveal the prominent seasonality in the long-term variation of TCTS, which can be largely explained by the seasonality in the covariations of the midlatitude jet stream and storm locations. Specifically, significant increases of TCTS occur in June and October during the past decades, which may result from the equatorward displacement of the jet stream and poleward migration of storm locations. Prominent slowdown of TCTS is found in August, which is related to the weakened jet strength and equatorward storm migration. In September, the effects of poleward displacement and weakening of the jet stream on TCTS are largely compensated by the poleward storm migration, and therefore no significant change in TCTS is observed. Meanwhile, the multidecadal variability of the Atlantic may contribute to the multidecadal variability of TCTS. Our findings emphasize the significance in taking a seasonality view in discussing the variability and trends of near-coast Atlantic TCTS under climate change.
Latitudinal response of storm activity to abrupt climate change during the last 6,500 years

Abstract:This study examines the influence of the strength of Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) on storminess at different latitudes in the North Atlantic, based on a new 6.5 kyr record of large storms from the Scotian Shelf (Eastern Canada) that provides the first >3.5 ka record from mid‐latitudes. Comparison with a compilation of other paleo‐storm records shows that peaks in storminess are at times synchronous (4.5–2.5 ka and since 0.5 ka) between low‐ and mid‐latitudes, but in the intervening period (2.5–0.5 ka) were latitudinally asynchronous. Synchronous (asynchronous) behaviour correlates with sustained increase (decrease) of AMOC. Regime shifts in storm activity between low‐ and mid‐latitudes were more frequent since 2.5 ka, related to increased frequency of abrupt climate changes. These findings indicate a latitudinal response of storm activity due to abrupt climate change, which is critical to correctly assess future storm risks along the North Atlantic coastline.
