Abstract:The hydrological cycle has been substantially influenced by climate change and human activities. It is therefore of utmost importance to analyze the impact of climate change on hydrology, particularly on a regional scale, in order to understand potential future changes of water resources and water-related disaster, and provide support for regional water management. However, during the evaluation of climate change impact on hydrology or water resources, large uncertainty exists. In this paper, the Soil Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model is used to investigate the potential impact of climate change on hydrology of the upper reaches of Qiantang River Basin, East China, for the future period 2011-2100. The uncertainty is considered by employing upgraded reliability ensemble averaged GCM climate projections under three emission scenarios A1B, A2 and B1 for three different stages of the future period. These projections are downscaled and used in the hydrological model. Impact of climate change on precipitation, potential evapotranspiraton and river runoff is then investigated. The model calibration and validation outcomes show reasonable performance of the SWAT model. The final results suggest that annual river runoff will likely decrease almost under all emission scenarios and time stages of the future period. Particularly, at Jinhua Station, substantial decrease of annual river runoff can be noticed, indicating less water resource possibly available for the region in future. Simulated monthly patterns show that the largest decrease will likely occur in winter while increases will occur in summer, implying possible more water-related disasters in this region. However, it is also noticed that the change signs/amount could be different under different emission scenarios and time stages, indicating large uncertainty involved in the impact analysis. © 2013 Elsevier B.V.
Impact of Climate Change on 24‐h Design Rainfall Depth Estimation in Qiantang River Basin, East China

Abstract:The frequency and magnitude of extreme meteorological or hydrological events such as floods and droughts in China have been influenced by global climate change. The water problem due to increasing frequency and magnitude of extreme events in the humid areas has gained great attention in recent years. However, the main challenge in the evaluation of climate change impact on extreme events is that large uncertainty could exist. Therefore, this paper first aims to model possible impacts of climate change on regional extreme precipitation (indicated by 24-h design rainfall depth) at seven rainfall gauge stations in the Qiantang River Basin, East China. The Long Ashton Research Station-Weather Generator is adopted to downscale the global projections obtained from general circulation models (GCMs) to regional climate data at site scale. The weather generator is also checked for its performance through three approaches, namely KolmogorovSmirnov test, comparison of L-moment statistics and 24-h design rainfall depths. Future 24-h design rainfall depths at seven stations are estimated using Pearson Type III distribution and L-moment approach. Second, uncertainty caused by three GCMs under various greenhouse gas emission scenarios for the future periods 2020s (20112030), 2055s (20462065) and 2090s (20802099) is investigated. The final results show that 24-h design rainfall depth increases in most stations under the three GCMs and emission scenarios. However, there are large uncertainties involved in the estimations of 24-h design rainfall depths at seven stations because of GCM, emission scenario and other uncertainty sources. At Hangzhou Station, a relative change of -16% to 113% can be observed in 100y design rainfall depths. Copyright (c) 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Abstract:Studying the impacts of climate change on water resource can help human beings take meas-ures when facing problems.The results of HadCM3 and 7 meteorological sites’daily data supplied by China Meteorological Administration in Qiantang River Basin are used to estimate design storms in 2020s under A1 B scenario by both dynamic and statistical downscaling methods.The final results show that ex-treme storms will increase in 2020s under A1 B scenario.Besides,the design storms for different return periods calculated through the dynamical method will increase more than those calculated through statisti-cal method.

Abstract:The impact of climate change on regional hydrological extreme events has been a research topic that has received much attention in recent years. This paper aims to provide a general overview of changes on future runoffs and water levels in the Qu River Basin, upper reaches of Qiantang River, East China by combining future climate scenarios, hydrological model and 1D hydraulic model. The LARS-WG (Long Ashton Research Station Weather Generator) statistical downscaling method is used to downscale the GCM (Global Climate Model) outputs (including BCC, BNU, CanESM and CSIRO under RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 scenarios) and generate 50 years of synthetic precipitation and maximum and minimum temperatures to drive the GR4J hydrological model and the 1D hydraulic model for the baseline period 1971-2000 and the future period 2021-2050. Finally, the POT (Peaks over Threshold) method is applied to analyze the change of extreme events in the study area. The results show that design runoffs and water levels all indicate an increasing trend in the future period for Changshangang River and Jiangshangang River at most cases, especially for small return periods, and for Qu River the increase becomes larger, which suggests that the risk of flooding will probably become greater and appropriate adaptation measures need to be taken.

Abstract:The adverse impacts of climate change and urbanization are converging to challenge the waterlogging control measures established in the Dong Hao Chong (DHC) Basin. Based on representative concentration pathway (RCP) scenarios, the future (2030–2050) waterlogging was assessed for the DHC basin and combined with future design rainfall. The delta change factors were projected using the regional climate model, RegCM4.6, and the annual maximum one-day rainstorm was modified to develop the annual maximum value method. By combining the delta change and annual maximum value methods, a future short-duration design rainstorm formula is developed in this study. The Chicago hyetograph shapes indicated that the peak rainfall intensity and amount both increase in the five return periods with two RCP scenarios. The InfoWorks ICM urban flood model is used to simulate the hydrological response. The results show that climate change will exacerbate urban waterlogging in DHC Basin. The maximum inundation volume and number of inundation nodes were expected to increase in the five return periods under the RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 scenarios, respectively. The submerged area is increasing due to climate change. This study highlights the link between climate change and urban drainage systems, and suggests that the effect of climate change in extreme rainfall should be considered in urban waterlogging management and drainage system design.

Abstract:The convergence of urban expansion, deteriorating infrastructure, and a changing climate will escalate the risks of stormwater pollution and urban flooding in the coming decades. Using outputs from an ensemble of global climate models to drive a high spatial resolution stormwater model, we analyzed climate change impacts on urban stormwater runoff and control measures for 23 cities across the United States. Runoff model outputs for two future emissions scenarios ending in 2055 were compared against a historical scenario to assess changes. All cities showed increases in average annual stormwater runoff, with changes up to 30% over the next 30 years due to a greater frequency of high intensity storm events. Runoff model outputs showed substantial variation across cities with untreated stormwater runoff increasing by as much as 48%. Patterns of future runoff impacts within cities will affect the performance of distributed treatment strategies such as Green Stormwater Infrastructure (GSI) to meet municipal water quality improvement and runoff reduction goals. Results indicate that adoption of adaptable design standards and decision support tools that readily accommodate projected precipitation changes are critical for supporting more resilient designs of stormwater control measures.

Abstract:Climate change and urbanization are significantly magnifying flood hazard, leading to a greater vulnerability of urban concentrations. This paper investigates the impact of climate change on urban flooding using future projected rainfall data and a calibrated hydraulic model. Two urban watersheds in Delhi, India (the Qudesia Nallah catchment and the Jahangirpuri drain catchment) are considered to evaluate the climate change impact on urban flooding. Regional climate models (RCMs) are used to project future precipitation, which is then utilized by the hydraulic model to evaluate the impact on flooding. Climate data from three RCMs extracted from the Coordinated Regional Climate Downscaling Experiment (CORDEX) are used to study the impact of climate change for historical (1990–2016) and future scenario (Representative Concentration Pathway (RCP) 4.5, 2021–2100). The rainfall projections are fed as 2-, 5-, 10-, and 20-year return periods to a calibrated hydrodynamic Storm Water Management Model (SWMM). The results show that the flooded nodes vary between 2–6 and 12–43, respectively, in the Qudesia Nallah catchment and the Jahangirpuri drain catchment under present conditions but increase from 11 to 51 and 42 to 91, respectively, for future climate conditions. The results suggest that the risk of occurrence of flooding, duration, and frequency in the two study areas will increase in the future when compared to those under the present conditions. The results also indicate that the damage induced by the 20-year return period rainfall at the present time will likely be caused just by the 2-year return period in the future. This is due to the greater likelihood of rainfall extremes in the region. The potential flooding sites identified in this study will provide the urban municipalities with substantive information to perform ameliorative strategies.

Abstract:Climate and land use changes have a significant impact on the runoff generation process in urban environments, and these effects could get worse in the future. The combined contributions of these changes have increased the risk of flooding. Therefore, there is a need for integrated modeling to better understand the runoff variability, especially in small urban catchments. To quantify and separate the effects of land-use changes and climate change on the hydrological response of urban catchments with a distributed hydrological model (Storm Water Management Model, SWMM), this study introduces a new integrated approach based on the Machine Learning based land use change modeler and climate change scenarios under CMIP6. Based on supervised classification and land use change model analysis, accumulated impervious area increase from 22% (in 2023) to 33% (in 2060) was observed in the study area. Furthermore, integrating this projected increase in imperviousness with future climate change into SWMM by considering three different scenarios i.e., S1 (Climate Change), S2 (Combined Land Use and Climate Change), and S3 (Land use Change) resulted that climate change could cause an increase in runoff from 13.2% to 18.3% in peak runoff and the contribution of land use could range from 9.1% to 18.6%. Similarly, in response to the coupled effects of climate and land-use change, the runoff would likely change from 24.53% to 39.66%. Conclusively, the study showed that despite climate change, intensive urban development by the substitution of impervious surfaces could also have a severe impact on the microclimate and hydrology of small catchments. Lastly, this study could provide a way forward for the future planning and management of water resources in small catchments which could be extended to larger catchments.

Simulation and Assessment of Projected Climate Change Impacts on Urban Flood Events: Insights From Flooding Characteristic Metrics

Abstract:Urban flooding is a global water disaster resulting from the expansion of urban impervious surfaces and the strengthening of extreme precipitation events, especially in China. Nonetheless, few studies have focused on the spatial distributions of urban flooding characteristics and their variations in the context of climate change. In this study, eight critical metrics (i.e., maximum flooding volume, total overloaded manholes with different flooding volumes or durations, total flooding volume, mean and maximum flooding durations, maximum inundation area, and depth) are adopted to characterize the urban flood events. The impacts of climate change on these metrics are assessed for two periods, the 2030s (2020–2049) and 2070s (2060–2089), and compared with those in the baseline period (1976–2005). The Future Science City Park in Beijing, China, is selected as our study area. The results show that all four flood events are well simulated, with both efficiency coefficients and correlation coefficients being over 0.8. The number of overloaded manholes and the total flooding volume are projected to increase 19.3%–44.8% and 171%–716% under 20‐year rainfall events due to climate change in the two future periods. The spatial distribution of overloaded manholes with different increased flooding volumes is projected to expand to almost the whole area from the region with lowland and limited drainage capacity. Furthermore, the maximum inundation area and depth are projected to increase obviously. This study will be helpful for designing and improving the drainage system, controlling urban flooding, and adapting to climate change. Evaluating the response and adaptation of urban stormwater systems to changed rainfall with the CMIP6 projections

Abstract:Climate change is altering urban rainfall characteristics, leading to extreme urban stormwater and, particularly, more frequent flooding. Due to the uncertainty of climate change, the responses of urban drainage systems to climate change are becoming more complicated. This complexity makes it difficult for decision makers to assess whether urban infrastructure is sufficiently resilient to cope with flood risks. In this study, the Xiao Zhai area, a high-density urban area of China, was used as an example. A quantitative method for assessing these risks and the resilience of urban drainage systems to future urban stormwater was developed. First, based on the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6), the variation and uncertainty of future rainfall in the study area were analysed. A high-fidelity hydro-hydraulic model was developed to analyse the influence of climate change on future urban stormwater. Finally, the relationship between urban flood risk and the resilience of urban drainage systems was evaluated. The results show that the temporal distribution of future rainfall from 2023 to 2100 is relatively uniform. However, the number of heavy rainfall events increases significantly during this period. The flood risk caused by future rainfall was one level higher than the historical flood risk. For example, the flood risk caused by future 5a rainfall is equal to the flood risk from historical 10a rainfall. The correlations between the spatial distributions of flood risk and resilience are 0.49-0.63. Urban drainage systems urgently need to be improved and refined in areas with flood risk and low resilience to become more resilient to climate change. Rational planning of grey-green rainwater facilities in flood risk and low resilience areas can improve the rainwater system's resilience to 0.67-0.95 for climate change.

Abstract:Global climate change and rapid urbanization increase the risk of urban flooding, especially in China. Climate change and the 'heat island effect' have increased the frequency of extreme precipitation. Affected by the backwardness of drainage facilities and the lack of drainage capacity, many cities have experienced large-scale waterlogging in low-lying areas, and ocean-like phenomena appear in cities. The public infrastructure was damaged and caused a lot of economic losses. Therefore, it is important to investigate the adaptability of drainage systems to the future in a changing environment. The Sixth International Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP6) and Storm Water Management Model (SWMM) were used to quantify the impact of climate change on Beijing's waterlogging under different rainstorm scenarios for the future 40 years. The quantile delta mapping method of daily precipitation based on frequency (DFQDM) is proposed to correct the daily precipitation of the climate model and which is proved to be feasible. After the annual precipitation and extreme precipitation index are corrected, percent bias (PBIAS) is significantly reduced. The PBIAS of the extreme precipitation index of the corrected model is all controlled within 6%. The corrected accuracy of CanESM5 is the best. The total flood volume (TFV) of the node increases with the aggravation of climate change. The TFV of SSP5-8.5 and SSP2-4.5 increased by 45.43 and 20.8% in the 100-year return period, respectively, and more than 94% of the conduits reached the maximum drainage capacity in different return periods. After the low impact development (LID) was installed, the improvement effect on the outflow with a smaller return period was significant, decreasing by about 50%. The LID can effectively reduce the overflow of the drainage system. The results of this study can provide suggestions for the reconstruction of the drainage system and the management of flood risk for Beijing in the future.

Abstract:Background Stormwater is water resulting from precipitation events and snowmelt running off the urban landscape, collecting in storm sewers, and typically being released into receiving water bodies through outfalls with minimal to no treatment. Despite a growing body of evidence observing its deleterious pollution impacts, stormwater management and treatment in cold climates remains limited, partly due to a lack of quality and loading data and modeling parameters. This study examines the quality of stormwater discharging during the summer season in a cold-climate, semi-arid Canadian city (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan). Results Seven stormwater outfalls with mixed-land-use urban catchments > 100 km 2 were sampled for four summer (June–August 2019) storm events and analyzed for a suite of quality parameters, including total suspended solids (TSS), chemical oxygen demand (COD), dissolved organic carbon (DOC), metals, and targeted polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). In addition, assessment of stormwater toxicity was done using the two toxicity assays Raphidocelis subcapitata (algae) and Vibrio fischeri (bacteria). Notable single-event, single-outfall contaminant pulses included of arsenic (420 μg/L), cadmium (16.4 μg/L), zinc (924 μg/L), fluorene (4.95 μg/L), benzo[a]pyrene (0.949 μg/L), pyrene (0.934 μg/L), phenanthrene (1.39 μg/L), and anthracene (1.40 μg/L). The IC 50 in both R. subcapitata and V. fischeri was observed, if at all, above expected toxicity thresholds for individual contaminant species. Principal component analysis (PCA) showed no clear trends for individual sampling sites or sampling dates. In contrast, parameters were correlated with each other in groups including DOC, COD, TSS, and reduced algal toxicity; and total dissolved solids (TDS), sum of metals, and pH. Conclusions In general, stormwater characteristics were similar to those of previous studies, with a bulk of contamination carried by the first volume of runoff, influenced by a combination of rainfall depth, antecedent dry period, land use, and activity within the catchment. Roads, highways, and industrial areas contribute the bulk of estimated contaminant loadings. More intensive sampling strategies are necessary to contextualize stormwater data in the context of contaminant and runoff volume peaks.

Abstract:Abstract Urban areas are becoming increasingly vulnerable to extreme storms and flash floods, which could be more damaging under climate change. This study presented an integrated framework for assessing climate change impact on extreme rainfall and urban drainage systems by incorporating a number of statistical and modelling techniques. Starting from synthetic future climate data generated by the stochastic weather generator, the simple scaling method and the Huff rainfall design were adopted for rainfall disaggregation and rainfall design. After having obtained 3-min level designed rainfall information, the urban hydrological model (i.e., Storm Water Management Model) was used to carry out the runoff analysis. A case study in a tropical city was used to demonstrate the proposed framework. Particularly, the impact of selecting different general circulation models and Huff distributions on future 1-h extreme rainfall and the performance of the urban drainage system were investigated. It was revealed that the proposed framework is flexible and easy to implement in generating temporally high-resolution rainfall data under climate model projections and offers a parsimonious way of assessing urban flood risks considering the uncertainty arising from climate change model projections, downscaling and rainfall design.

Abstract:This study investigated the adverse impact of climate change and climate-related uncertainties on urban waterlogging. Based on multiclimate models, the future extreme precipitation and urban waterlogging under uncertainties was assessed for Beijing. Future rainfall scenarios under two representative concentration pathways (RCP4.5/RCP8.5) were generated by the Delta change method combined with Chicago design storm. The InfoWorks ICM was used to simulate the extent of urban waterlogging. Results showed that urban waterlogging in Beijing would increase, which would be induced not only by more severe climate changes, but also by the limited capacity of drainage systems. In addition, the model uncertainties were found to be increased with both the precipitation intensity and the level of climate change, potentially reaching up to 109%. Therefore, this study highlights the importance for taking climate change and the consequent uncertainties into consideration when designing waterlogging prevention measures.

Abstract:The problem of water logging and deteriorating water quality of surface water bodies has been witnessed in and around the urban centers owing to rapid population growth, urbanization, industrialization and climate variability. The stormwater runoff management is the need of the hour, and with increasing public and political awareness and rapid economic growth, it is receiving due attention. In the climate-change scenario, it needs to be addressed with scientific interventions as changes in pattern of precipitation affects the runoff volume and movement of pollutants including nutrients. This paper discussed and critically reviewed the stormwater runoff characterization, modelling, relationship between runoff and water quality, first flush phenomena, runoff treatment in changing climate scenarios. Researchers have used regional climate models (RCMs) to project future precipitation and then incorporated in various hydrologic and hydraulic models such as SWMM, SWAT, HSPF, SUSTAIN and MUSIC etc to study the impact of climate change and its adaptation. The flooding and water quality problem can be combatted with adopting green infrastructure practices. Many works on stormwater management have been carried out in developed countries, but efforts need to be geared up in the developing countries, particularly for runoff characterization and effective management. Emerging pollutants need to be paid more attention by undertaking systematic research. Future studies should include measurements and quantification of ecosystem services and integration of stormwater management into environmental policy. This review suggests intriguing future research avenues at the nexus of stormwater management and ecological services.

Impact and analysis of urban water system connectivity project on regional water environment based on Storm Water Management Model (SWMM)

Abstract:SWMM stands as a dynamic rainfall-runoff urban hydrological model, crafted by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. It adeptly replicates urban rainfall production and ground runoff, and the Pressure-State-Response (PSR) theory artfully reflects human-environment interactions. Urban Water System Connectivity (UWSC) fortifies connections among regional rivers, transforming them into an intricate, dense network. To study the improvement of the regional water environment by the UWSC project, this study takes the UWSC project in Runan County, Zhumadian, China as the research object, constructs a hydrodynamic and water quality model based on SWMM, and simulates it under different rainfall situations. At the same time, the ecological service value theory and PSR theory are used to establish an ecological effect index system to analyze the ecological effect before and after the UWSC project. This paper evaluates the urban water system connectivity project from three aspects: hydrodynamic, water quality, and ecological effects. Results underscore that the post-UWSC era witnesses decreased river flood flows in varied design rainfalls, accompanied by delayed flood peaks. Under P = 10a and P = 20a rainfalls, peak flow reductions of 6.6% and 4.96% respectively, manifest with peak time lags of 0.17h. Flow rate adjustments align with flow behavior, exhibiting decreased peak flow rates accompanied by temporal lags. Initial river flow increases by about 30%, amplifying river water body exchange capacity. Following the UWSC implementation, the study area's five primary rivers display TSS reductions ranging from 46% to 86.94%, COD from 36.98% to 92.43%, TN from 45.9% to 92.96%, TP from 35.71% to 84.78%, and NH3–N from 38.52% to 92.19%. Simulated point source pollution, under comparable initial conditions, indicates pollutant decay rates escalating from 3.2%–20%–35.71%–92.43%. Ecological impact ascends from 6.33 × 10 8 RMB to 9.65 × 10 8 RMB, reflecting a 52.5% escalation. The UWSC initiative enriches urban river flood resilience and water quality, emblematic of urban water ecological civilization progress.

Abstract:Frequent spring flooding in Southern Quebec's Nicolet River watershed has a history of causing severe damage, which is likely to worsen as climate change progresses. Employing the ArcSWAT model, an attempt was made to assess the potential impacts of climate change on the Nicolet River watershed's seasonal and annual streamflow, particularly that portion affected by snowmelt. Calibrated and validated against observed streamflow data for the periods of 1986-1990 and 1991-2000, respectively, the model reliably predicted daily streamflow (e.g., percent bias within +/- 15%, Nash-Sutcliffe model efficiency > 0.50, and the ratio of root mean square error to the standard deviation <= 0.70). In an effort to investigate the impacts of climate change on streamflow, future climate datasets were generated for 2053-2067 by implementing the eleven sets of existing Regional Climate Model (RCM) simulations produced for the North American Regional Climate Change Assessment Program (NARCCAP) in the ArcSWAT model. The ArcSWAT model's hydrological responses were closely tied to changes of climate variables: a strong correlation existed between simulated runoff and precipitation, and between temperature and predicted evapotranspiration, snowfall, and winter snowmelt. Projected future climate data showed increases in both average temperature (+2.5 degrees C) and precipitation (+21%). Significant greater total precipitation was forecasted for the winter season, while total snowfall was projected to decrease by 6%. However, the snowmelt showed an increasing trend for the late winter and earlier spring period. Streamflow was expected to increase annually and in most seasons except spring. Annual peak flows volumes would increase by 13% in the future and the occurrence of peak flows would shift to the winter (vs. the spring), indicating a greater risk of winter flooding in the future. The individual impact of temperature and precipitation on peak flows showed that increases in peak flows were mainly tied to increased precipitation, while the shift in their timing was mostly tied to warming temperatures.

Abstract:In this study, impacts of climate change on streamflow in the Yellow River Basin are investigated. A semi-distributed hydrological model (SWAT) is calibrated and validated with records at Huayuankou, Lanzhou and Huaxian hydrological stations. Using outputs from a global circulation model (HadCM3), a statistical downscaling model (SDSM) and a combination of ‘bilinear-interpolation and delta’ are applied to generate daily time-series of temperature and precipitation (1961–2099). The generated data is integrated into SWAT to simulate streamflow under current and future climate conditions. The results show that the results modeled responding to SDSM fit natural or measured records better than responding to the combination method. Responses of runoff are assessed based on climate change scenarios constructed with SDSM using HadCM3 outputs. The projections show that the Yellow River Basin tends to become warmer. Annual average maximum and minimum temperature would rise by 5.0 °C in the 2080s. Annual precipitation would also increase by 54 mm–150 mm. The change in summer precipitation is most significant with an increase by 75 mm–115 mm. Annual average streamflow tends to increase gradually 17.9%–42.9% with time under scenario A2 and 11.5%–34.5% under scenario B2 relative to the current runoff (1960.5 m3/s). Seasonal average streamflow would increase in spring, summer and winter in most time horizons under both scenarios, but decrease in autumn under scenario A2. Increasing runoff in spring and summer can favor crop growth, and increasing annual precipitation and runoff can alleviate water demand stress to some degree in the Yellow River Basin.
