Abstract:Piled reinforced embankments have been increasingly used to construct highways on soft soils due to their rapid construction, low costs, and small total and differential settlements. The estimation of pile efficacy is important in design. Pile efficacy is obtained from an analytical model of piled reinforced embankments based on the principle of minimum potential energy, which considers the interaction among embankment fill, geotextile, pile (cap), and subsoil. The effects of pile spacing, embankment height, cap size, shear modulus of embankment fill, geotextile stiffness, and pile-subsoil stiffness ratio on pile efficacy are investigated in this study. The results show that pile efficacy is significantly affected by pile spacing, embankment height, cap size, and pile-subsoil stiffness ratio, while shear modulus of embankment fill and geotextile stiffness have lesser effects. The theoretical predictions compare reasonably well with field measurements. Copyright ASCE 2006.
