Abstract:We present a learning-based Shack-Hartmann wavefront sensor (SHWS) to achieve the high-order aberration detection without image segmentation or centroid positioning. Zernike coefficient amplitudes of aberrations measured from biological samples are referred and expanded to generate the training datasets. With one SHWS pattern inputted, up to 120th Zernike modes could be predicted within 10.9 ms with 95.56% model accuracy by a personal computer. The statistical experimental results show that compared with traditional modal-based SHWS, the root mean squared error in phase residuals of this method is reduced by ∼40.54% and the Strehl ratio of the point spread functions is improved by ∼27.31%. The aberration detection performance of this method is also validated on a mouse brain slice with 300 µm thickness and the median improvement of peak-to-background ratio of this method is ∼30% to 40% compared with traditional SHWS. With the high detection accuracy, simple processes, fast prediction speed and good compatibility, this work offers a potential approach to improve the wavefront sensing ability of SHWS, which could be combined with an existing adaptive optics system and be further applied in biological applications.

Abstract:Pupil size is an important parameter since it governs the magnitude of ocular aberrations. The pupil size of a human eye has significant individual differences and varies with light level and accommodation. In order to accurately measure ocular aberrations under different pupil sizes using a Shack-Hartmann wavefront sensor (SHWFS), two types of relationship matrices R (1) and R (2) were proposed, which corresponded to wavefront reconstruction with and without an aperture stop, respectively. The numerical and experimental results indicated that matrix R (2) can significantly improve the accuracy of wavefront restoration when the incident beam size is inconsistent with the wavefront reconstruction aperture. Meanwhile, the impact of the aperture stop on the reconstruction accuracy will become smaller and smaller as the ratio ρ of the outer area to the detection aperture decreases. This study not only can be used for accurately measuring ocular aberrations under different pupil sizes, but also for other variable aperture aberrations measurement in other applications.

Abstract:The wavefront passed through the atmosphere will produce different degree of distortion, due to atmospheric disturbances, defocus, aberration and etc. Distortion of wavefront can result in image degradation. Conventional methods typically use adaptive optics to correct the degradation. Correction system is complex and requires three parts, including wavefront detection, wavefront reconstruction, wavefront correction, and each part requires very precise control. In order to simplify the system structure, we use Hartmann - Shack wavefront sensor to get wavefront information, and then reconstruct the degenerated image using software restoration method. The paper introduces the background and significance of Hartmann-Shack wavefront sensor, summarizes the wavefront reconstruction principle. Then we analyze the general model of optical transfer function (OTF) and the way to calculate the OTF of diffraction limited incoherent image system. Take the actual situation into consideration, wavefront distortion is unavoidable, so we deduce the method to calculate OTF with wavefront distortion. Based on different wavefront detection error and the image restoration quality, we concluded the allowed maximum detection error under different peak value of wavefront.

Abstract:The Shack–Hartmann wavefront sensor is the most widely used instrument to measure the optical aberrations of the human eye. Traditional Shack–Hartmann wavefront sensors measure the ocular aberrations at a single wavelength, which is usually in the near infrared region of the spectrum. A modified Shack–Hartmann wavefront sensor that simultaneously measures aberrations at three visible wavelengths is discussed. The modified instrument provides a measurement of the longitudinal chromatic aberration of the eye in addition to the monochromatic aberrations provided by the conventional device. Human subjects testing results and the comparison of measured LCA with clinical values are presented.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To assess the repeatability and difference of ocular wavefront aberrations measured with ray-tracing, dynamic skiascopy, and Hartmann-Shack aberrometers. METHODS:It was an agreement study. Ocular aberrations data obtained by using iTrace (Tracey Technologies), OPD SCAN (Nidek) and WASCA (Zeiss) wavefront aberrometers were analyzed. Eighty six eyes of 45 patients were measured three times. The difference between the measurement and the mean of three consecutive measurements were analyzed to verify the reproducibility. The difference in sphere, cylinder, spherical equivalent (SEQ) and high order aberration (HOA) errors obtained from different aberrometers were evaluated. RESULTS:Repeatability errors of these three wavefront analyzer were found to be low. Comparisons on the same eye showed that there was a significant difference (P < 0.01) in sphere and cylinder between ray-tracing aberrometer and the others in high SEQ group (>or= -6.00 diopter). For HOA, all aberrometers obtained similar results in low SEQ group (< -6.00 diopter). In the high SEQ group, the ray-tracing aberrometer showed statistically higher data in HOA and coma (P < 0.01), and there was no significant difference between the skiascopy and the Hartmann-Shack aberrometer. The iTrace-OPD and iTrace-WASCA HOA difference correlated with spherical equivalent in the high SEQ group (r = -0.418, -0.399, P < 0.01). CONCLUSION:All devices produced similar results of reproducibility, but showed varying results in the ocular total wavefront reading.

Abstract:The spatially resolved wavefront aberrations of four types of ophthalmic lens are measured with a custom-built apparatus based on a Hartmann-Shack wavefront sensor and specially designed positioning stage. The wavefront aberrations of the progressive addition lenses (Pairs) are compared. The results show that the distribution depends much on the design philosophy, although the average values of root mean square in the entire measurement areas have no significant difference. It is feasible to evaluate the optical performance through the wavefront analysis of PALs, but how to meet the customized visual needs of patients and how to minimize the unwanted aberrations in some special zones are important points that should be taken into account. Abstract:In this paper, a high-accuracy calibration method for errors resulted from aberration in long focal length measurement, is presented. Generally, Gaussian Equation is used for calculation without consideration of the errors caused by aberration. However, the errors are the key factor affecting the accuracy in the measurement system of a large aperture and long focal length lens. We creatively introduce an effective way to calibrate the errors, with detailed analysis of the long focal length measurement based on divergent light and Talbot interferometry. Aberration errors are simulated by Zemax. Then, we achieve auto-correction with the help of Visual C++ software and the experimental results reveal that the relative accuracy is better than 0.01%. By comparing modified values with experimental results obtained in knife-edge testing measurement, the proposed method is proved to be highly effective and reliable.

Abstract:When relative motion between the target and the camera occurs, the captured images would be blurred. Due to the arbitrariness of the motion, it is of great difficulty to restore the degraded images. In this paper, a new method based on Hartmann-Shack Wavefront Sensor is proposed to deblur the degraded image of the extended target caused by arbitrary motion. Relevant theoretical analysis is given and a corresponding experimental system is built. During the exposure time, image sequences are obtained by the Hartmann-Shack Wavefront Sensor to calculate the displacement vectors, from which the Point Spread Function (PSF) is estimated to restore the blurred image. Experimental results show that the proposed method can efficiently restore the degraded image of the target. So the application of Hartmann-Shack Wavefront Sensor can be extended to detect the motion of target, which means we can deal with wavefront distortion and motion blur using Hartmann-Shack Wavefront Sensor simultaneously.

Abstract:Detecting and calculating accuracy of centroid of light spot is an important factor which affects the detecting accuracy of Hartmann wavefront sensor. The influence of window selection on centroid detection error is great. The Prieto's method of progressively reducing window size is analysed, and the template matching method is adopted according to the feature of the light spots of Hartmann sensor. With template matching, the accuracy of centroid detection is improved. The computer simulation of the centroid calculations of spot array shows that the centroid's rms error can be decreased by 53.7%. In addition, the template matching method avoides iterative centroid calculations and reduces computer time consumption.

Abstract:We have designed and built a binocular Hartmann-Shack wave-front sensor using a single microlens array and camera for real-time aberration measurement of both eyes in an open-view configuration. Furthermore, the use of a long wavelength (1050 nm) laser diode makes the illumination source completely invisible, so that measurements can be unobtrusively performed while the subject stares at the visual world under realistic conditions. The setup provides a large dynamic range and simultaneous measurements of convergence, pupil size, accommodation, and aberrations. The open-view design not only offers the possibility of measuring the subject's ocular optics under natural conditions but also allows coupling the device with other existing vision testing instruments and setups, which increases its potential to become a powerful tool for different visual optics studies.

Abstract:This study proposes a custom-built aberrometer that measures peripheral defocus to evaluate myopia progression in the human eye. This advanced device can measure visual fields in both horizontal (up to 40°) and vertical (up to 30°) orientations. It incorporates a novel fixation target that is meticulously designed using an optical simulation software. Notably, each angular point of this novel fixation target differs considerably from the conventional fixation target. To mitigate the effects of the optical variations introduced by spectacles and the subject's vision, we incorporated a position-variable lens positioned in front of the eye. This lens compensates for these variations, enhancing the precision of the measurements. To evaluate the performance of the proposed aberrometer, we conducted experiments under three distinct conditions: first, with the naked eye; second, while wearing spectacles; and third, while wearing a multifocal lens.

Abstract:Based on the Hartmann testing principle, this paper proposes a novel image quality testing technology which applies to a large-aperture space optical system. Compared with the traditional testing method through a large-aperture collimator, the scanning Hartmann testing technology has great advantages due to its simple structure, low cost, and ability to perform wavefront measurement of an optical system. The basic testing principle of the scanning Hartmann testing technology, data processing method, and simulation process are presented in this paper. Certain simulation results are also given to verify the feasibility of this technology. Furthermore, a measuring system is developed to conduct a wavefront measurement experiment for a 200 mm aperture optical system. The small deviation (6.3%) of root mean square (RMS) between experimental results and interferometric results indicates that the testing system can measure low-order aberration correctly, which means that the scanning Hartmann testing technology has the ability to test the imaging quality of a large-aperture space optical system.

Abstract:Micro lens array whose parameters directly affect the wave front detection performance is a core component of Hartmann-Shack wave front sensor. Make a deep theoretical study on sensitivity, spatial resolution, wave front measurement error and Dynamic Range which affect the design of the wave front detector, and research the coupling relationship between micro lens array parameters and focal length by numerical simulation analyzing method. Experimental results showed that: Hartmann-Shack' various parameters are all determined by the number of sub-lenses and the focal length of the micro lens array. Dynamic range and sensitivity are in reciprocal relationship with the focal length, the full dynamic range of the pore size became negative when the focal length increased to a certain threshold, the wave front measuring error can be reduced by higher Fresnel number, greater micro lenses number and lesser number of Zernike polynomial. It is of great significance for multiple sub-aperture detection technique to select reasonable parameters of sensor in the practical application.

Abstract:This paper is devoted to a comparative analysis of the methods for calibrating the Shack-Hartmann wavefront sensor: on the plane wavefront (calibration by turning the sensor) and spherical wavefront (absolute calibration). For comparison, a gen-eral analysis of the advantages and disadvantages of calibration methods was carried out, including the creation of a reference wavefront and the determination of the ex-act geometric parameters of the sensor. The geometric parameters of the Shack-Hartmann wavefront sensor are used in the reconstruction of the measured wave-front and determine such parameters of the Shack-Hartmann sensor as the dynamic range and sensitivity. Also, for numerical comparison, an analysis of the errors of the dynamic range, determined by aberrations such as tilt and defocus, was carried out, and the dependences of these errors on the error of the geometric parameters of the sensor were constructed.

Abstract:The effects of the performance of the microlens array on the sensing accuracy of Hartmann-Shack wavefront sensor were analyzed theoretically. A series of experiments have been carried out according to the analysis. Some profitable results have been achieved. The two kinds of results show that when the focal length and aperture of the microlens array are constant, the sensing accuracy of Hartmann-Shack wavefront can be improved through the improvement of the power utilization ratio and the imaging quality.
Statistical optimal parameters obtained by using clinical human ocular aberrations for high-precision aberration measurement

Abstract:Purpose: Compared to Shack-Hartmann wavefront sensor (SHWS), the parameters of virtual SHWS (vSHWS) can be easily adjusted to obtain the optimal performance of aberration measurement. Its current optimal parameters are obtained with only a set of statistical aberrations and not statistically significant. Whether the above parameters are consistent with the statistical results of the optimal parameters corresponding to each set of aberrations, and which performance is better if not? The purpose of this study was to answer these questions. Methods: The optimal parameters to reconstruct 624 sets of clinical ocular aberrations in the highest accuracy, including the numbers of sub-apertures (NSAs) and the expansion ratios (ERs) of electric field zero-padding, were determined sequentially in this work. By using wavefront-reconstruction accuracy as an evaluation index, the statistical optimal parameter configuration was selected from some possible configurations determined by the optimal NSAs and ERs. Results: The statistical optimal parameters are consistent for normal and abnormal eyes. They are different from the optimal parameters obtained with a set of statistical aberrations from the same 624 sets of aberrations, and the performance using the former is better than that using the latter. The performance using a fixed set of statistical optimal parameters is even close to that using the respective optimal parameters corresponding to each set of aberrations. Conclusion: The vSHWS configured with a fixed set of statistical optimal parameters can be used for high-precision aberration measurement of both normal and abnormal eyes. The statistical optimal parameters are more suitable for vSHWS than the parameters obtained with a set of statistical aberrations. These conclusions are significant for the designs of vSHWS and also SHWS.
Precision and agreement of higher order aberrations measured with ray tracing and Hartmann-Shack aberrometers

Abstract:Background: To assess the precision and agreement of measurements of higher order aberrations (HOAs) obtained with a ray tracing aberrometer (iTrace) and a Hartmann-Shack aberrometer (Topcon KR-1 W). Methods: Prospective evaluation of the diagnostic test. Data from the right eyes of 92 normal subjects obtained using the two devices were included in this study. Two observers performed 3 consecutive scans to determine the intraobserver repeatability and interobserver reproducibility. About one week later, one observer performed an additional 3 consecutive scans to obtain the intersession reproducibility. The within-subject standard deviation (Sw), test-retest repeatability (TRT) and intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) were used to assess the precision, while Bland-Altman plots were performed to assess the agreement. Results: For intraobserver repeatability of the ocular, corneal and internal HOAs, Topcon KR-1 W showed a 2.77Sw of 0.079 μm or less and ICCs of 0.761 or more; and iTrace showed a 2.77Sw of 0.105 μm or less and ICCs of 0.805 or more. The ICCs of the internal HOAs of interobserver reproducibility were less than 0.75 except for spherical aberration (SA) (0.862), and interobserver reproducibility of the counterpart showed similar but lower results. For the ocular, corneal and internal HOA measurements, statistically significant differences existed between the Topcon KR-1 W and iTrace (all P < 0.05). No significant differences were observed in the ocular SA and internal coma. Conclusions: The ray tracing and Hartmann-Shack method aberrometers provided excellent repeatability but less reliable reproducibility in the measurement of HOAs (except for SA). The two aberrometers should not be interchangeable in clinical application because of the significant differences in HOA measurements between them.
