Abstract:An ultrafast all-optical switching with the response time on the order of 10 fs is demonstrated in a three-dimensional opal polystyrene nonlinear photonic crystal by means of precise femtosecond pump-probe technique. The switching is realized by the shift in the photonic band gap under external optical pumping of 8 fs Ti:sapphire pulse laser with a peak pump power of 20.6 GW/cm2. The good performance of optical switching is attributed to the very strong and fast Kerr nonlinear optical response of the polystyrene material.

Abstract:All-optical switching with ultrafast time response of 20 fs is realized in a two-dimensional polystyrene photonic crystal. The high switching contrast of more than 45% is achieved. The pump and probe method is used to study the dynamical shift of the photonic band gap based on the nonlinear optical Kerr effect. It is found that the maximum shift of short wavelength band edge is about 6 nm under excitation of 13 GW/cm pump light.

Abstract:An all-optical switching with high switch efficiency is realized based on two-dimensional nonlinear photonic crystal made of polystyrene. The prism-film coupling method is used to couple energy of probe light into photonic crystal waveguide. High transmittance contrast of more than 60% is realized for the probe light. Time response of the optical switching is around l0 ps. The dynamical shifts of photonic gap induced by pump light are measured and analyzed in detail. The photonic gap shifts l0 nm under the excitation of 16.7GW∕cm2 pump intensity, which is in agreement with the theoretical predictions.

Abstract:An ultrafast all-optical switching is demonstrated in an organic three-dimensional nonlinear photonic crystal with a response time as short as 120 fs. The operating wavelength of the optical switching is in the visible spectrum. The switching function is realized by a shift of the photonic band gap under optical pumping. It is found that the photonic band gap shifts about 10 nm with the excitation of 27.5GW∕cm2 pump laser.

Abstract:We theoretically investigate and discuss the response time, switching contrast, and pump power of all-optical switching in a nonlinear photonic crystal structure with high quality factor (high-Q) cavity. For the response time of all-optical switching, the drop and rise time are considered, respectively. Moreover, we find that when the duration of pump pulse is shorter than the lifetime, the response curve of all-optical switching is asymmetric, and the drop time is determined by both the lifetime of high-Q cavity and duration of pump pulse, and the rise time is mainly determined by lifetime of high-Q cavity. In contrast, when the duration of pump pulse is much longer than the lifetime, the dynamic response curve is symmetric, and both the drop and rise time are determined by the duration of pump pulse. On the other hand, the pump power can be significantly reduced by using a setup where the probe beam is located at the high-Q cavity mode with very narrow linewidth. Furthermore, if the central wavelength of pump pulse is also set to match with this or another high-Q cavity mode, the pump power will be reduced further due to the large field enhancement within the photonic crystal, and more importantly there is no extra prolonged response time of all-optical switching. By this method, the pump power as low as 210 KW/cm2 is observed in our model structure with the quality factor of only 32 096 for the ordinary polystyrene material.

Abstract:Nonlinear photonic crystals made from polystyrene materials that have Kerr nonlinearity can exhibit ultrafast optical switching when the samples are pumped by ultrashort optical pulses with high intensity due to the change of the refractive index of polystyrene and subsequent shift of the band gap edge or defect state resonant frequency. Polystyrene has a large Kerr nonlinear susceptibility and almost instantaneous response to pump light, making it suitable for the realization of ultrafast optical switching with a response time as short as a few femtoseconds. In this paper, we review our experimental progress on the continual improvement of all-optical switching speed in two-dimensional and three-dimensional polystyrene nonlinear photonic crystals in the past years. Several relevant issues are discussed and analyzed, including different mechanisms for all-optical switching, preparation of nonlinear photonic crystal samples by means of microfabrication and self-assembly techniques, characterization of optical switching performance by means of femtosecond pump-probe technique, and different ways to lower the pump power of optical switching to facilitate practical applications in optical information processing. Finally, a brief summary and a perspective of future work are provided.

Abstract:We report an all-optical switch based on two-pump four-wave mixing in fibers. The switched signal is not shifted in frequency in this scheme. For different signal wavelengths, the pump wavelengths and powers can be optimized to achieve the best performance. The principle of how to design the switch is discussed in detail. A high extinction ratio of -60 dB is obtained when the pump parameters are optimized by a genetic algorithm that exhibits good convergence property and high computing efficiency. The effect of zero-dispersion wavelength fluctuations along the fiber on the switch is analyzed.

Abstract:Photonic crystal all-optical switching is realized in two-dimensional nonlinear photonic crystals made of poly[2-methoxy-5-(2-ethylhexyloxy)-1,4-phenylenevinylene]. Organic polymer films are fabricated by a slow evaporation method. Under resonant excitation, the organic matrix provides very large third-order nonlinear optical susceptibility. An operating pump energy as low as 514 pJ/cm 2 and a high switching efficiency of 70% are achieved for the photonic crystal optical switching. A switching time of 45.6 ps is maintained due to fast Forster transfer of excitons.

Abstract:With the development of micro-or nano-fabrication technologies, great interest has been aroused in exploiting photonic crystal nanobeam structures. In this article the design of high-quality-factor (Q) polymeric photonic crystal nanobeam microcavities suitable for realizing ultrafast all-optical switching is presented based on the three-dimensional finite-difference time-domain method. Adopting the pump-probe technique, the ultrafast dynamic response of the all-optical switching in a nanobeam microcavity with a quality factor of 1000 and modal volume of 1.22 (lambda/n)(3) is numerically studied and a switching time as fast as 3.6 picoseconds is obtained. Our results indicate the great promise of applying photonic crystal nanobeam microcavities to construct integrated ultrafast tunable photonic devices or circuits incorporating polymer materials with large Kerr nonlinearity and ultrafast response speed. Abstract:We report a nanocomposite material possessing large nonlinear optical coefficients and fast response simultaneously, which is made of poly[2-methoxy-5-(2-ethylhexyloxy)-1,4-phenylenevinylene] doped with Ag nanoparticles. Under resonant excitation of the polymer matrix and Ag nanoparticles, the value of the nonlinear susceptibility reaches the order of 10−6 esu. A nonlinear response time of 35 ps is achieved due to the energy transfer from organic molecules to Ag nanoparticles. An ultrafast photonic crystal all-optical switching with an ultralow pump intensity of 0.2 MW/cm2 is realized.

Abstract:We report a picosecond and low-power all-optical switch with multiple operating wavelengths in integrated photonic circuits, on-chip-triggered by a control light. The sample configuration combines the advantages of plasmonics and photonics, i.e. plasmonic nanostructures used as core units interconnected by ultralow-loss dielectric slot waveguides. A large nonlinearity enhancement is obtained based on resonant excitation, local field effect, and field enhancement effect, while fast response is maintained by intermolecular energy transfer. A fast response of 63 ps and ultralow control light intensity of 450 kW/cm(2) are achieved.

Abstract:Soft photonic crystals are appealing due to their self-assembly ability, wide tunability, and multistimuli-responsiveness. However, their response time is relatively slow, ranging from milliseconds to minutes. Here, we report submicrosecond switching of chiral liquid crystals (LCs) with 1D photonic microstructures, where electric fields modify the orientational order of molecules and quench their fluctuations, rather than altering the orientation. Thus, the adjusted refractive indices result in a fast shift of the photonic bandgap, on the order of 100 ns, which is four orders of magnitude faster than conventional electro-optic switching in cholesterics. This work offers tremendous opportunities for soft photonic applications.

Abstract:On-chip-triggered all-optical switching is a key component of ultrahigh-speed and ultrawide-band information processing chips. This switching technique, the operating states of which are triggered by a remote control light, paves the way for the realization of cascaded and complicated logic processing circuits and quantum solid chips. Here, a strategy is reported to realize on-chip remotely-triggered, ultralow-power, ultrafast, and nanoscale all-optical switching with high switching efficiency in integrated photonic circuits. It is based on control-light induced dynamic modulation of the coupling properties of two remotely-coupled silicon photonic crystal nanocavities, and extremely large optical nonlinearity enhancement associated with epsilon-near-zero multi-component nanocomposite achieved through dispersion engineering. Compared with previous reports of on-chip direct-triggered all-optical switching, the threshold control intensity, 560 kW/cm(2), is reduced by four orders of magnitude, while maintaining ultrafast switching time of 15 ps. This not only provides a strategy to construct photonic materials with ultrafast and large third-order nonlinearity, but also offers an on-chip platform for the fundamental study of nonlinear optics.

Abstract:We report a new all-optical switching in a two-dimensional photonic crystal microcavity made of semiconductor multiple quantum wells and realized based on the electromagnetically induced transparency effect with exciton and two-exciton energy levels. We use the quantum coherence effects to achieve small absorption of the probe field, and the absorption of the probe field can be adjusted by controlling the pump field and decay rate. We turn the control field into pulses of light field so that we can regulate the efficiency of the switch. Through selecting the appropriate control light field intensity, we can obtain a switching efficiency of 85% and a switching time is 10 ps. This result can be used for the development of new types of nanoelectronic devices for realizing the switching process.
