Abstract:This paper reports the expansion of a novel optical multicast scheme to 1-to-4 and 2-to-4 configurations using an active-vertical-coupler (AVC)-based optical crosspoint switch (OXS) matrix. A 1-to-4 broadcast experiment has been carried out first, with only 0.5 dB excess loss per signal split. Input signals with two wavelengths are then fed into one row of OXS to investigate the effect of wavelength-division multiplexing on the 1-to-4 multicast switching. Finally, combining both, the expanded 2-to-N multicast is also achieved with an N value up to 4. The switching characteristics, switched signal quality, and optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) have been investigated in different configurations. Power penalties of less than 4.5 dB are found in worst case switched signals in the 2-to-4 configuration. Slow OSNR degradation in line with previous prediction is also observed. The measured results confirm the excellent multicast switching characteristics nearly free from power splitting loss in this device

Abstract:An optical switch based on a scanning mirror was designed in this paper. The optical switch is pro-grammable and controlled by an embedded Linux system that switches between the fiber array channels onthe UI of the touch display. Meanwhile, the switching sequence and residence time of the optical switch canbe preset. In addition, the optical switch can be self-calibrated to obtain the maximum output power of eachchannel. The principle of the optical switch is analyzed and the performance of the optical switch is tested ex-perimentally. The experimental results show that the average insertion loss is less than 17 dB for the singlemode fiber array, the average crosstalk between adjacent channels is more than 30 dB, and the switching time between the adjacent channel is less than 1.3 ms. The average insertion loss is less than 2.4 dB for the multi-mode fiber array. It has the advantages of low loss, low delay, high precision, good stability, high repeatabil-ity, low cross-talk between the adjacent channel, and good man-machine interaction for the application of theWavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) and multi-channel optical waveguide sensors test device

Abstract:We propose a novel kind of switch to construct a class of optical cross-connect (OXC) having both point-to-point and to-multipoint capabilities. The switch is call splitter-and-delivery (SAD) one, which has inherent multicasting capability. It is composed of splitters, 2x1 digital switches and optical gates, and is better implemented in a single silicon board using planar silica waveguide technology. Less than -40 dB crosstalk is achievable by cooperative actions of the digital switches and optical gates. On the basis of the SAD switch, we further propose three OXC architectures having different modular structures, But fundamentally, they are all strictly nonblocking and have multicasting capability. The expanding methods when the number of the fibers and;he wavelengths increase a few or by a few times are comparatively demonstrated.

Abstract:As multicast applications become more and more popular, implementing multicast in optical domain has attracted more and more attention due to its more efficient bandwidth usage. The MC-OXC is the key for realizing multicasting at optical layer and directly affects the performance of the multicast services in WDM networks. In this paper, a novel mixed-integrated optical multicast switch for multicast-capable cross-connect is proposed. The new architecture uses power splitters for multicast connections only, allowing unicast sessions to pass without enduring unnecessary power loss. And also the performances of the MC-OXC are analyzed. We performed the cost and cost sensitivity analysis for different MC-OXCs. The results show that the proposed architecture guarantees strictly nonblocking with lower costs.

Abstract:Artificial Intelligence (AI) demands large data flows within datacenters, heavily relying on multicasting data transfers. As AI models scale, the requirement for high-bandwidth and low-latency networking compounds. The common use of electrical packet switching faces limitations due to optical-electrical-optical conversion bottlenecks. Optical switches, while bandwidth-agnostic and low-latency, suffer from having only unicast or non-scalable multicasting capability. This paper introduces an optical switching technique addressing this challenge. Our approach enables arbitrarily programmable simultaneous unicast and multicast connectivity, eliminating the need for optical splitters that hinder scalability due to optical power loss. We use phase modulation in multiple layers, tailored to implement any multicast connectivity map. Phase modulation also enables wavelength selectivity on top of spatial selectivity, resulting in an optical switch that implements space-wavelength routing. We conducted simulations and experiments to validate our approach. Our results affirm the concept's feasibility, effectiveness, and scalability, as a multicasting switch by experimentally demonstrating 16 spatial ports using 2 wavelength channels. Numerically, 64 spatial ports with 4 wavelength channels each were simulated, with approximately constant efficiency (< 3 dB) as ports and wavelength channels scale.

Abstract:This paper presents the experimental results of the switching performances of the fast reconfigurable optical crosspoint switch (OXS) matrix. This paper demonstrates unicast optical packet switching for a 10-Gb/s payload at various modulation formats and a 155-Mb/s nonreturn-to-zero label. Reconfigurable time as fast as 2 ns is achieved because of the optimized control circuit and device fabrication. The power and wavelength dependence for the payload and the capability of multihop operation are investigated as well. The functionalities of the OXS acting as an optical switch and an optical buffer are demonstrated in the optical network node experiment. Very good switching property is obtained for the OXS, which clearly validates OXS as a potential technique for future high-speed Internet-protocol-over-wavelength-division-multiplexing networks

Abstract:Multicast has long been a performance bottleneck for data centers. Traditional solutions relying on IP multicast suffer from poor congestion control and loss recovery on the data plane, as well as slow and complex group membership and multicast tree management on the control plane. Some recent proposals have employed alternate optical circuit switched paths to enable lossless multicast and a centralized control architecture to quickly configure multicast trees. However, the high circuit reconfiguration delay of optical switches has substantially limited multicast performance. In this paper, we propose to eliminate this reconfiguration delay by an unconventional optical multicast architecture called HyperOptics that directly interconnects top of rack switches by low cost optical splitters, thereby eliminating the need for optical switches. The ToRs are organized to form the connectivity of a regular graph. We analytically show that this architecture is scalable and efficient for multicasts. Preliminary simulations show that running multicasts on HyperOptics can on average be 2.1× faster than on an optical circuit switched network.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate all-optical packet compression for a RZ payload up to 40 Gb/s and a label at 155 Mb/s, based on a recirculating buffer with one single optical crosspoint switch. The packet can be flexibly switched, dropped, time slot interchanged up to 9 time-slots and compressed up to 4 packets in one time slot. Back to back BER performance of the 4 times compressed packet is measured with only 1.8 dB of power penalty. By using variable fiber delay lines, this scheme can be further extended to the applications for variable length/time slot packet routing and compression.

Abstract:All-optical wavelength multicasting has been experimentally demonstrated for 36 Gbit/s 16-quadrature amplitude modulation signals based on four-wave mixing processes in a silicon waveguide with multiple pumps. In our experiment, dual pumps are injected together with the signal into the waveguide and nine idlers are generated, involving five wavelength multicasting channels. Coherent detection and advanced digital signal processing are employed, and the recovered constellation diagrams of the multicasting idlers show a root-mean-square error vector magnitude degradation as small as 2.74%. The bit error rate (BER) results are measured for these multicasting idlers, and the power penalties are all lower than 0.96 dB at the BER of 3.8 x 10(-3) (corresponding to the forward error correction threshold). Abstract:An all-optical 2 x 2 cross/bar switch is demonstrated exploiting nonlinear polarization rotation in a single semiconductor optical amplifier. The proposed architecture allows operation with packets at the same input wavelengths and does not require high-speed clock control pump signals. Bit-error-rate measurements at the switch output ports for both cross/bar configurations and for both cases of one and two packet signals connected to the input ports are performed. A maximum of 2.3 dB of power penalty was observed in the worst case. The switching energy was as low as about 400 fJ per bit at 10 Gb/s.

Abstract:As bandwidth-intensive and time-sensitive streams applications such as high-definition television (HDTV) get popular, there rises a demand of supporting multicast communication directly at optical layer on next-generation optical networks. The multicast-capable optical cross-connect (MC-OXCs) is the necessary device to implement multicasting at optical layer. The functional building blocks for MC-OXC are light splitters (space splitters) or multi-wavelength converters (frequency splitters). The space splitter has no wavelength conversion capability, whereas the frequency splitter has limited fanout, decreased optical signal-to-noise ratio and also is expensive. We therefore proposed a tradeoff architecture called joint multicasting capable optical cross-connect (jMC-OXC) integrating both space splitters and multi-wavelength converters. In this paper, we investigate the network performance and the physical transmission performance on the jMC-OXC architecture by dynamic simulation and experimental demonstration. Three simulation schemes are designed and the results show that the network performance of the jMC-OXCs with limited multiwavelength converters can obtain a close performance to that with full multi-wavelength converters. A prototype of jMC-OXC is examined and its bit error rate (BER) performance is tested after passing the multi-wavelength converters.

Abstract:This letter experimentally demonstrates a scalable optical-label switching router architecture that supports a limited multicast function. A semiconductor-optical-amplifier-based Mach-Zehnder interferometer wavelength converter performs multiwavelength conversion for multicast at 10 Gb/s by cross-phase modulation. With a 2.5-Gb/s unicast channel, the experiment also demonstrates contention resolution in the wavelength domain at mixed data rates.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigated designing multicast-capable optical cross-connects (MC-OXCs) on a basis of the 4- stage multicast network. Firstly, we derive the sufficient wide- sense nonblocking (WSNB) and rearrangeable nonblocking (RNB) conditions for the 4-stage multicast network with only two (the second and output) stages being multicast-capable. Both WSNB and RNB 4-stage multicast networks need 0(N 3/2) crosspoints. Then MC-OXCs empoying the WSNB and RNB 4-stage multicast network are proposed and proven to be power efficient in reducing the total power loss caused by light splitting.

Abstract:Large-scale silicon optical switches are essential to support the ever-increasing data traffic. Among the various switching architectures, the well-known switch-and-select (S&S) architecture has the advantages of low crosstalk and strict non-blocking. However, it suffers from high path-dependent losses as the waveguide crossings increase dramatically with the number of ports. In this paper, a large-scale 32 x 32 S&S optical switch on a multi-layer Si3N4-on-SOI platform is reported. The optical switch chip incorporates 1984 broadband thermo-optic Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI)-based switch elements, 246 016 three-dimensional (3D) waveguide crossings, and 2048 interlayer couplers. Both approximate to 1-mdB-loss 3D waveguide crossings and approximate to 0.3-dB-loss interlayer couplers are realized, significantly reducing the overall insertion loss and footprint of the switch chip. The measured average fiber-to-fiber insertion loss is 12.88 dB at the 1580 nm wavelength. In addition, the crosstalk is less than -20.7 dB over the 110-nm wavelength range. The power consumption of the entire switch chip is only approximate to 0.98 W due to the air trenches and substrate undercut. High-fidelity optical transmission of a 50 Gb s(-1) quadrature phase-shift keying signal verifies the high-performance routing capability of this chip. These results indicate that the large-scale optical switch with broadband, low crosstalk, and high-power efficiency is promising for datacenter optical network applications.
Novel Optical Switch Structure Implemented with the Function of Power Control and Crosstalk Reduction

Abstract:A novel optical switch structure is proposed to implement the function of cross-connection, optical power control and crosstalk reduction for optical cross-connect (OXC) in wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) optical transport networks. Based on the conventional AS/AC network structure, the proposed one deploys a set of 1x2 digital optical switches (DOS) between the AS and AC modules. Thus the optical signal power can be controlled and the crosstalk can be reduced by adjusting the driving voltage of the 1x2 DOSS. Experiments with a 4x4 polymeric thermo-optical DOS demonstrate that the power control range is more than 35 dB, and the delay for 3 dB power control is within 7.5 ms in the worst case. Analytical result also shows that the crosstalk can be suppressed at least 35 dB.
