Abstract:Time-slot interchange is investigated using an optical buffer with a large variable delay based on an active-vertical-coupler crosspoint switch. The delay could range from 1 to 999 time slots in our scheme, and the length of the time slot is correspondingly flexible. The experiment could be performed at a data rate of 10 Gbit/s. The results show the power penalty is about 1.5 and 5.6 dB, respectively, when the packets pass through two buffers and through one buffer nine times. Abstract:Time-slot assignment (TSA) functions including time-slot interchange and serial-to-parallel and parallel-to-serial conversions, and optical compressor are investigated using an optical buffer with a large variable delay range based on active vertical coupler crosspoint switch. The variable delay range could be achieved from 1 to 999 time slots in the proposed scheme, and correspondingly, the length of time slot is flexible. It is demonstrated that the experiments could be performed even at a data rate of 10 Gb/s with power penalties of about 1.5 and 5.6 dB compared with back-to-back when the packets pass through two buffers and one buffer nine times

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate all-optical packet compression for a RZ payload up to 40 Gb/s and a label at 155 Mb/s, based on a recirculating buffer with one single optical crosspoint switch. The packet can be flexibly switched, dropped, time slot interchanged up to 9 time-slots and compressed up to 4 packets in one time slot. Back to back BER performance of the 4 times compressed packet is measured with only 1.8 dB of power penalty. By using variable fiber delay lines, this scheme can be further extended to the applications for variable length/time slot packet routing and compression.

Abstract:An optical switch based on a scanning mirror was designed in this paper. The optical switch is pro-grammable and controlled by an embedded Linux system that switches between the fiber array channels onthe UI of the touch display. Meanwhile, the switching sequence and residence time of the optical switch canbe preset. In addition, the optical switch can be self-calibrated to obtain the maximum output power of eachchannel. The principle of the optical switch is analyzed and the performance of the optical switch is tested ex-perimentally. The experimental results show that the average insertion loss is less than 17 dB for the singlemode fiber array, the average crosstalk between adjacent channels is more than 30 dB, and the switching time between the adjacent channel is less than 1.3 ms. The average insertion loss is less than 2.4 dB for the multi-mode fiber array. It has the advantages of low loss, low delay, high precision, good stability, high repeatabil-ity, low cross-talk between the adjacent channel, and good man-machine interaction for the application of theWavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) and multi-channel optical waveguide sensors test device

Abstract:A novel decimal optical buffer based on a multi-loop configuration and an optical cross-point switch matrix is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. Its variable delay range is of 1-999 times the basic delay unit. The buffer dynamic reconfiguration can be achieved in nanosecond switching speed. Experimental results show that a differential phase-shift keying payload and an ON-OFF keying payload can be processed in such a buffer for 9.1 mu s with a penalty of 3.3 and 6.5 dB, respectively.

Abstract:We demonstrate packet detection at an optical switch input using an optoelectronic control system which then processes the headers of the packets, and controls the switching according to the header content for both fixed and variable length packets arriving synchronously or asynchronously at the optical switch. Furthermore, contention resolution is demonstrated in an optical Crosspoint switch by detecting packets at the input ports and controlling the switch operation accordingly. By incorporating this control system into the Crosspoint switch it is possible to route contending packets to a recirculating fibre delay line and to control the switch output in a flexible manner for any type of traffic depending on the applied switching algorithm. The feasibility of a recirculating buffer implementation is supported by the very low crosstalk characteristics of the Crosspoint switch. The experiments are done with 155 Mb/s headers and 10 Gb/s payloads transmitted on a single wavelength with a guard time of 12.8 ns between the header and the payload. Error-free photonic switching of fixed and variable length packets and contention resolution of fixed length packets are shown, with the main signal degradation being from the switch cell attenuation and amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) which can be alleviated by eliminating fibre-to-fibre transmission loss in the Crosspoint switch.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate a novel decimal optical buffer scheme based on multi-loop configuration and single switch element - an optical crosspoint switch (OXS) matrix. Our results show that by using a differential phase-shift keying (DPSK) payload in the buffer can outperform OOK payload with 3.2 dB sensitivity improvement owing to its alleviation of patterning induced degradation compared to OOK payload, clearly validating DPSK as a promising modulation format to overcome nonlinear impairments and to extend number of hops in all-optical packet switching network.

Abstract:Buffers are essential components of any packet switch for resolving contentions among arriving packets. Currently, optical buffers are composed of fiber delay lines (FDL), whose blocking and delay behavior differ drastically from that of conventional RAM at least two-fold: 1) only multiples of discrete time delays can be offered to arriving packets; 2) a packet must be dropped if the maximum delay provided by optical buffer is not sufficient to avoid contention, this property is called balking. As a result, optical buffers only have finite time resolution, which may lead to excess load and prolong the packet delay. In this paper, a novel queueing model of optical buffer is proposed, and the closed-form expressions of blocking probability and mean delay are derived to explore the tradeoff between buffer performance and system parameters, such as the length of the optical buffer, the time granularity of FDLs, and to evaluate the overall impact of packet length distribution on the buffer performance.

Abstract:This paper presents the experimental results of the switching performances of the fast reconfigurable optical crosspoint switch (OXS) matrix. This paper demonstrates unicast optical packet switching for a 10-Gb/s payload at various modulation formats and a 155-Mb/s nonreturn-to-zero label. Reconfigurable time as fast as 2 ns is achieved because of the optimized control circuit and device fabrication. The power and wavelength dependence for the payload and the capability of multihop operation are investigated as well. The functionalities of the OXS acting as an optical switch and an optical buffer are demonstrated in the optical network node experiment. Very good switching property is obtained for the OXS, which clearly validates OXS as a potential technique for future high-speed Internet-protocol-over-wavelength-division-multiplexing networks
