Abstract:In this article, we report the preparation and magnetic properties of NdDy0.2Fel2-yMoyC0.6 (y=1.5, 2) synthesized by melting method. Further nitrogenation brings even better intrinsic properties to the carbon-nitride combinations compared to the simple nitrides or carbides.

Abstract:The carbides of NdDy0.2Fe12−yMoyC0.6 (y = 1.5,2) crystallized in the ThMn12-type structure have been successfully synthesized by arc melting method, followed by a heat treatment. The magnetic properties are strongly enhanced with the addition of carbon. Upon the carbonation the saturation magnetization Ms is increased by about 20 emu/g and the Curie temperature Tc is enhanced by 40–70 K. The spin reorientation (SR) temperature decreases from 125 K for NdDy0.2Fe10Mo2 to 55 K for NdDy0.2Fe10Mo2C0.6 indicating the change of magnetocrystalline anisotropy in the Nd sublattice. It is found that the intrinsic magnetic properties of the carbides can be improved by further nitrogenation. The composite carbon–nitrogen compounds show a Tc~560 K, Ms~105 emu/g and Ha (anisotropy field) ~86 kOe for NdDy0.2Fe10Mo2C0.6Nz and a Tc~628 K, Ms~119 emu/g and Ha~115 kOe for NdDy0.2Fe10.5Mo1.5C0.6Nz. These magnetic properties are even better than those of simple nitrides, suggesting that these compounds can be considered as a good candidate for permanent magnet applications.

Abstract:A systematic investigation of structure and magnetic properties of the compounds R3Fe29-xTx (R=Y, Ce, Nd, Sm, Gd, Tb, and Dy; T=V and Cr) and their nitrides, carbides and hydrides has been performed. The nitrogenation and carbonization lead to a good improvement in the Curie temperature, the saturation magnetization and anisotropy fields at 4.2 K and room temperature, but the hydrogenation results in a good improvement for some hydrides and an obvious degeneration for other hydrides in the magnetic properties. The uniaxial anisotropy and the good intrinsic magnetic properties of Sm3Fe29-xTxNy and Sm3Fe29-xTxCy make these compounds the hopeful candidates for new high- performance hard magnets.

Abstract:RFe10.5Mo1.5Cx (R = Y, Nd, and Dy; x = 0 - 0.6) have been successfully synthesized by are melting, then followed by a gas-solid phase reaction to form YFe10.5Mo1.5CxNy. X-ray diffraction studies and thermomagnetic analysis show that all samples are of good single phase, and carbides and carbon nitrides remain the ThMn12-type structure. The addition of carbon atoms has an effect of improving the magnetic properties. Both Curie temperature and saturation magnetization are found to be increased with carbon concentration x in the RFe10.5Mo1.5Cx series, and the carbon atoms also affect the magnetocrystalline anisotropy. The easy axial anisotropy of NdFe10.5Mo1.5Cx and DyFe10.5Mo1.5Cx is enhanced. As to the nitrides, the results indicate that YFe10.5Mo1.5CxNy possess a higher Curie temperature and a larger saturation magnetization than YFe10.5Mo1.5Ny, which is of significance in the technical applications. Abstract:A systematic study has been made on formation condition, crystallographic structure and magnetic properties of RMo1.5Fe10.5Nx, where R=Y, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er. The interstitial nitrogen atom effects on Curie temperature, saturation magnetization and magneto-crystalline anisotropy have been investigated. Two important preliminary results have been obtained. (1) A single phase crystallized in the ThMn12-type structure was stabilized with a smaller content of molybdenum, thus, the compounds possess a higher Curie temperature and a larger spontaneous magnetization. (2) A complete system of compounds with 1:12 type structure containing the light rare earth cerium and praseodymium was synthesized, which will be favorable for developing new rare earth hard magnetic materials.

Abstract:Using x-ray diffraction, powder neutron diffraction, high-field magnetization measurement and thermomagnetic analysis, we have studied the structural and magnetic properties of RFe(10)V(2)C(0.5) alloys (R = Sm or Y) made by are melting, in which the carbon was added using Fe-C alloy. Both samples are found to be nearly single phase with ThMn12-type structure and with a small amount of alpha-Fe phase (less than 4 wt%). The neutron diffraction of the Y-containing compound indicates that the real composition of the main phase is Y(Fe9.87V1.90C0.23)C-0.27. and that the carbon atoms occupy not only the interstitial 2b site but also the substitutional 8i site. The Fe moments of the 8i site as well as the 8j site are found to be reduced in the Y(Fe9.87V1.90C0.27)C-0.27 compound compared with its carbon-free counterpart. The decrease in the Fe moment at the 8j site is due to the surrounding interstitial carbon atoms, while the decrease in the Fe moment at the 8i site is ascribed to the surrounding substitutional carbon atoms as nearest neighbours. The high-field magnetization measurements indicate that the anistropy held of SmFe10V2C0.5 and YFe10V2C0.5 are slightly higher than those of SmFe10V2 and YFe10V2, respectively. In SmFe10V2C0.5, the magnetization curve in the hard direction at 4.2 K shows a first-order-magnetization-process (FOMP)-like or quasi-FOMP-like transition.

Abstract:Starting from carefully homogenized Nd10Fe90-yMoy (y=12, 10, 7) alloys and by appropriate mechanical milling, the as-milled microstructure consisting of a nanoscale mixture of severely distorted 1:12 phase and substitutional α-Fe-based solid solution was obtained. This kind of as-milled microstructure was thought to have a critical effect on the formation of iron-free nanocrystalline 1:12 phase during subsequent annealing. Upon nitrogenation, the sample of Nd10Fe78Mo12Nx exhibited a record-high coercivity of 13.1 kOe at 293 K. Measurements of initial magnetization curve and a family of demagnetization curves engendered under different maximum applied fields Hm were carried out, and the results revealed the domain-wall pinning at grain boundaries as the coercivity mechanism. A low Mo-content sample of Nd10Fe83Mo7Nx with Hci∼5.8 kOe, Br∼6.8 kG, and (BH)max∼7.0 MG Oe was made by optimizing the preparation conditions.

Abstract:The structural and magnetic properties of a solution of carbon in YFe10.5Mo1.5 prepared by are melting have been studied by means of magnetic measurements and the neutron powder diffraction technique. It was found that the carbides retain the ThMn12-type structure but with an increase of unit-cell volume. The neutron diffraction results indicate that most of the carbon atoms occupy the interstitial 2b sites and the others occupy the substitutional 8i sites. According to the magnetic measurements, both the Curie temperature and the saturation magnetization are found to increase with the carbon concentration x in the YFe10.5Mo1.5Cx, series, and the magnetocrystalline anisotropy is also affected by the carbon atoms.

Abstract:In this work, alloys of Nd(Fe1-xCox)10.5M1.5 (M=Mo and V) were prepared via arc melting and heat treatment. The nitrides of these alloys were synthesized using a gas-solid state reaction method. The influence of Co substitution for Fe in NdFe10.5Mo1.5 and NdFe10.5V1.5 alloys and their nitrides were investigated. It was found that the lattice parameters a, c, and unit cell volume V decrease with increasing Co content x for Nd(Fe1-xCox)10.5Mo1.5. As compared to their parent alloys, the lattice parameters and unit cells volume increase after nitrogenation, which gives rise to higher Curie temperature, magnetization and magnetocrystalline anisotropy field for nitrides. A small amount of Co substitution for Fe (x≤0.3) can enhance the magnetic properties including Curie temperature, saturation magnetization and magnetocrystalline anisotropy field of the alloys and their nitrides, while higher concentration of Co (x>0.3) will deteriorates these magnetic properties, especially for the nitrides, due to the modification of the band structure by Co atom. As a result, Nd(Fe1-xCox)10.5Mo1.5Ny and Nd(Fe1-xCox)10.5V1.5Ny with x≤0.2 become promising candidates for permanent magnet applications. A coercivity of 4.6 kOe and maximum energy product BHmax of 20 MGOe were achieved for NdFe9.45Co1.05Mo1.5Nx.

Abstract:The variation of the crystallographic and magnetic properties with Dy concentration has been investigated for Nd1−xDyxFe10.5Mo1.5 and Nd1−xDyxFe10.5Mo1.5Ny compounds. In the Nd1−xDyxFe10.5Mo1.5 system, the lattice parameters a, c and the saturation magnetization at 1.5K decrease with increasing Dy concentration, while the Curie temperature changes only little. At room temperature, all Nd1−xDyxFe10.5Mo1.5 samples exhibit weak easy-axis anisotropy with anisotropy fields up to about 1 T with a clear increase with increasing Dy concentration. Upon nitrogenation, the Nd1−xDyxFe10.5Mo1.5Ny compounds retain the original tetragonal ThMn12-type of structure but the unit-cell volume increases about 3.1%. At room temperature, the Nd1−xDyxFe10.5Mo1.5Ny compounds show easy-axis anisotropy with anisotropy fields above 7.2 T. At room temperature, in the Nd1−xDyxFe10.5Mo1.5Ny system the anisotropy field slightly increases with increasing Dy concentration.

Abstract:The structural and magnetic properties of Y(Fe1-xMnx)(12) compounds and their nitrides (x = 0.2 and 0.4) have been studied by using X-ray diffraction and magnetic measurements. It is found that the lattice parameters increase, while the saturation magnetization and Curie temperature decrease with Mn content increment in Y(Fe1-xMnx)(12) compounds. Y(Fe0.8Mn0.2)(12) compound shows a weak easy-c axis magnetization direction, but Y(Fe0.6Mn0.4)(12) compound is in a paramagnetic state at room temperature. Upon nitrogenation, the lattice parameters, Curie temperature are notably increased and the saturation magnetization is greatly increased by about 50%. The easy magnetization direction for both compound nitrides all lies in the basal plane at room temperature.

Abstract:Pr13Dy2Fe77C6B2 and Pr14DYFe77C6B2 compounds with tetragonal Nd2Fe14B-type structure have been successfully synthesized by vacuum annealing of melt-spun ribbons. The addition of B accelerates the formation of the Pr2Fe14C phase in the carbides prepared by melt-spinning. Coercivities mu H-0 integral(c) of 2.2 and 1.95 T at room temperature are achieved after optimum heat treatment for Pr13DY2Fe77C6B2 and Pr14DyFe77C6B2 ribbons, respectively. Anisotropic magnets have been produced by die-upsetting the melt-spun ribbons. The anisotropic Pr14DyFe77C6B2 magnet showed a maximum energy product of (BH)(max) = 187kJ/m(3). Abstract:The iron rich intermetallic compound YxDy1-xFe11.35Nb0.65 (x=0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8, 1.0) and their carbides YxDy1-xFe11.35Nb0.65C have been investigated. By the substitution of Y for Dy, for the alloys, the spin reorientation transition temperature (T-sr1) decreases, and the saturation magnetization M(s) and the anisotropy field B-a increase. The carbide YxDy1-xFe11.35Nb0.65C has a T-c around 710 K, M(s) in the range 90 similar to 140 JT(-1)kg(-1) and mu(0)H(a) changing rapidly with Y content at room temperature.

Abstract:A study on the magnetic properties of Nd 9 Fe 85− x Mn x B 6 ( x =0–2) melt-spun ribbons has been investigated. Under optimal heating condition, it was found that an appropriate amount of Mn could enhance hard magnetic properties, especially the maximum coercivity, which increases more than about 20%. Higher amounts of Mn addition lead to a loss of coercivity and ( BH ) max . XRD results indicate that each alloy consists of hard magnetic Nd 2 Fe 14 B phase and soft magnetic α-Fe phase. TMA scans indicate that the Curie temperature ( T c ) of α-Fe phase rises with the Mn doping content increasing until x =2. For x =2 sample there is a slope between the Nd 2 Fe 14 B phase and α-Fe phase peaks in TMA curve. It can be attributed to the formation of the metastable Nd 2 Fe 23 B 3 phase. The change in magnetic properties and Curie temperature may be attributed to the formation of δ -Mn and R 2 Fe 23 B 3 phase.

Abstract:The structure and permanent magnetic properties of isotropic powders of NdFe12−xVxNδ compounds were investigated by using mechanical alloying. It was found that heat treatment of as-milled powders at 700–900°C resulted in the formation of Nd(Fe,V)12 phase except for the sample with x=1, for which the crystallization was not complete and a large amount of α-Fe(V) was present at temperatures lower than 750°C. After nitrogenation, the volume expansion was about 5% and the Curie temperature enhancements were 140 to 160°C. In NdFe12−xVxNδ the values of Tc fall in the range 469–485°C. It has been found that the intrinsic coercivities strongly increased with increasing V content. The maximum coercivity of iHc=10.96kOe is achieved at 750°C with x=2.00. The difference between the coercivities of the mechanical alloyed Nd(Fe,V)12Nδ powders with different V content is attributed to their different crystallization behavior and phase stability during nitrogenation.

Abstract:We have succeeded in synthesizing PrFe10VxMo2−x compounds (x=0–1.5) and their nitrides with ThMn12-type structure. The phase formation and magnetic properties have been investigated by x-ray diffraction, differential thermal analysis, and magnetic measurements. It is found that PrFe10V2 compound with ThMn12-type structure does not form and that PrFe10VxMo2−x compounds with ThMn12-type structure can be formed in the as-cast sample (x=0) or by annealing the as-cast samples in a lower temperature (x=0.5–1.5). The substitution of Mo for V in the compounds results in a decrease of the magnetization and Curie temperatures. The PrFe10VxMo2−xNy with x=0–1.5 has a Tc about 416–265 °C. The hard magnetic properties of PrFe10VMoNy magnets prepared by hydrogenation-disproportionation-desorption-recombination technique have been assessed.

Abstract:The phase formations and the magnetic properties of the mechanically milled NdFe11−yCoyMo1Nx (y=0, 0.5, 1, 1.6, 2.2) compounds have been studied. A relatively high remanence to saturation magnetization ratio of 0.6–0.7 and a high coercivity up to 9.5kOe were achieved for these nitrides. It is found that the substitution of Co for Fe plays a key role in the grain growth and the grain distribution of α-Fe. The remanences and the coercivities of these compounds increase with the Co content up to y⩽1.6. These compounds show a significant remanence enhancement which can be attributed to the magnetic exchange coupling between Nd(Fe,Mo)12Nx and the α-Fe(Co) grains. The maximum energy product (BH)max of about 8.3MGOe is obtained for NdFe10Co1Mo1Nx with a Hc of ∼9.5kOe and a Mr of ∼78emu/g.

Abstract:The magnetic properties of Nd9Fe85−xMnxB6 (X=0,0.5,1) exchange coupling magnets were investigated by differential thermal analysis, X-ray diffraction, vibrating sample magnetometer and Mössbauer spectroscopy. It was found that manganese addition in melt-spun Nd9Fe85B6 can promote crystallization and enhance both coercivity and remanence ratio. The optimum coercivity and remanence ratio increases from 4.3kOe and 0.70 to 5.0kOe and 0.72, respectively. Thermomagnetic analysis showed Mn doping reduces the Curie temperature of the Nd2Fe14B phase and raises that of α-Fe phase. The volume fractions of α-Fe and Nd2Fe14B phase measured by Mössbauer spectroscopy appeared slightly different from Mn addition content. It is presumed that the enhancements in hard magnetic properties may be attributed to the change of the environment for the phases due to Mn addition.
