Abstract:The paper presents the results of a research project on reducing emissions from the TBSC8 series marine diesel engine. The engine has over 40 years' history of design. The research has been carried out through theoretical study, i.e. computer modelling and simulation, workshop testing and classification certificate testing. Simulation results were verified by data obtained from a benchmark testing and further simulations were carried out by varying engine operation parameters to optimize engine performance towards reducing NOx to meet the IMO regulations and minimizing the impact on fuel consumption. The methods adopted in the study for NOx emission reduction are retarding fuel injection timing, introduction of water into the engine's intake air and decreasing inlet air temperature. Conclusions have been reached that applying fuel injection retardation alone is able to bring the engine emission down to the level of the current IMO requirement, with an acceptable loss of fuel combustion efficiency. To meet future more strict emission regulations, water addition to inlet air could be a cost-effective solution.
