Abstract:Isobaric vapor–liquid equilibrium (VLE) data of the systems acetic acid+N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF), acetic acid+dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), DMSO+water, water+acetic acid+DMF, and water+acetic acid+DMSO have been measured at 13.33kPa by using an improved Rose equilibrium still. The association of acetic acid in vapor phase has been considered, and the nonideality of vapor phase was accounted for using the Hayden–O’Connell (HOC) method. The experimental binary data have been correlated by the NRTL, Wilson and van Laar models. The NRTL model parameters obtained from the binary data have been used to predict the ternary VLE data. The ternary predicted values obtained in this way agree well with the experimental values.

Abstract:The solubility of terephthalic acid in aqueous acetic acid solution with acetic acid mass fraction from 60% to 100% was determined at 423.15-493.15 K and 1.4 MPa by high-performance liquid-phase(chromatography.) Quantitative analysis of terephthalic acid in the solution was performed based on the relative mass correction factor of peak area between terephthalic acid and isopropyl acting as the internal standard sample.(Apelblat) equation was used for correlation and calculation of solubility data,and model parameters were obtained.The coincidence(between) calculated and experimental data is satisfactory.

Abstract:The removal and recycling of acetic acid from aqueous solutions is important for environmental protection and resource utilization. In this work, ionic liquid (IL) 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium diethylphosphate ([EMIM][DEP]) as an entrainer for the extractive distillation of the system water + acetic acid was investigated. Isobaric vapor-liquid equilibrium (VLE) data of the systems acetic acid + water, water + [EMIM]-[DEP], acetic acid + [EMIM][DEP], and water + acetic acid + [EMIM][DEP] have been measured at 101.32 kPa by using an improved Rose Williams equilibrium still. The addition of [EMIM][DEP] showed a remarkable entrainer performance for the separation of acetic acid from its aqueous solution. The boiling point difference of the water + acetic acid system increased from 17.88 K (0 wt % IL) to 42.41 K (about 50 wt % IL), and the relative volatility (x(1)' = 0.9) increased from 1.60 (0 wt % IL) to 5.28 (about 50 wt % IL). On the basis of the chemical theory and the Hayden-O'Connell (HOC) method, the parameters of the NRTL model for the binary systems were obtained, and the predicted values of the ternary systems of water + acetic acid + [EMIM][DEP] fitted the experimental VLE data well.

Abstract:Isobaric vapor-liquid equilibrium(VLE) data for acetic acid+ dimethyl sulfoxide(DMSO) system was measured at 101.33 kPa by using an improved Rose equilibrium still.Thermodynamic consistency for the experimental data was examined by using point-by-point test,and the fugacity coefficients of components in the vapor phase were calculated by Hayden-O′connell method.van Laar,Wilson and NRTL Models were used during the data correlation,and the parameters were obtained. The calculated values were in good agreement with the experimental data.For NRTL model,the average absolute deviation of temperature is 0.26 K,and the average absolute deviation in vapor phase is 0.0027.These data provide the necessary basic data for the design of acetic acid extractive distillation process.

Abstract:Methyl acrylate has a wide range of uses, but the production process usually produces aqueous by-products. In this study, four commonly used alcohols (1-pentanol, 1-hexanol, 1-heptanol, and 1-octanol) were selected as extractants to explore the liquid–liquid extraction behavior of water + methyl acrylate + extractants. Through the analysis of partition coefficient ( D ) and separation coefficient ( S ), it is found that the data of all systems are greater than 1, indicating that all four alkyl alcohols can well separate methyl acrylate from aqueous solution, and 1-octanol is the best. In addition, the consistency between the binary interaction parameters of regression and tie-line data was tested using Matlab tools, proving that the obtained parameters have good consistency.

Abstract:Liquid-liquid equilibrium data for the ternary system of water + 1,3-dichloro-2-propanol + epichlorohydrin were determined at the temperature of (283.15, 293.15, 303.15) K and atmosphere pressure. The reliability of experimental method was examined by the mass balance verification and the Othmer-Tobias equation. The experimental data were successfully correlated with both the NRTL model and UNIQUAC model, and the NRTL model presents more satisfactory result. These LLE data and model parameters obtained in this work are helpful for understanding, designing, and developing epichlorohydrin synthesis processes.

Abstract:The isothermal (T = 323.15 K) and the isobaric (P = 66.66 kPa and 79.99 kPa) vapor−liquid equilibria (VLE) for the ternary system of 2,2-dimethoxypropane + acetone + methanol were measured with an inclined ebulliometer. The measured results for the ternary system are compared with the calculated ones from the UNIQUAC equation using only temperature-dependent binary parameters obtained from the binary literature values and resulted in satisfactory results. The ternary VLE data are useful in the design of efficient separation process of 2,2-dimethoxypropane, acetone, and methanol.

The experimental ternary liquid–liquid equilibrium data have been successfully represented using the additional ternary parameters as well as the binary parameters in terms of the extended and modified UNIQUAC models.

Abstract:In this work, solid-liquid equilibria (SLE) data for ternary 3-nitrophthalic acid + 4-nitrophthalic acid + 1,4-dioxane system was determined at (283.15, 293.15, 303.15, 313.15 and 323.15) K, respectively. The solid-liquid phase diagrams of the ternary system were constructed based on the measured solubility data. The solid phases formed in the studied system were determined by Schreinemaker's wet residue method. In addition, the density of equilibrium liquid phase was obtained. At each temperature, there are two pure solids formed which correspond to 3-nitrophthalic acid and adduct of 4-nitrophthalic acid with 1,4-dioxane, in which the mole ratio of the two components is 2:3, in the ternary 3-nitrophthalic acid + 4-nitrophthalic acid + 1,4-dioxane system. The solubility data for the ternary system were regressed and calculated using the NRTL model which gives acceptable results for the investigated systems. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:In this work, solid–liquid equilibria (SLE) data for the ternary 3-nitrophthalic anhydride + 4-nitrophthalic anhydride + 1,4-dioxane system were obtained at (283.15, 303.15, and 323.15) K. The solid–liquid phase diagrams of the ternary system were constructed based on the measured solubility data. There existed two pure solid phases at each temperature in the studied system, pure 3-nitrophthalic anhydride and 4-nitrophthalic anhydride, which were identified by the wet residue method of Schreinemaker. Furthermore, the density (ρ) of the equilibrium liquid phase was determined. The ternary phase diagram and solubility data for the system 3-nitrophthalic anhydride + 4-nitrophthalic anhydride + 1,4-dioxane, which shows a much more practical application for the region where pure 3-nitrophthalic anhydride and 4-nitrophthalic anhydride are obtained, are much larger than those in the system with 2-propanone as a solvent.

Abstract:Liquid-liquid equilibria of the quaternary system water + caprolactam + 1-octanol + ammonium sulfate at (25, 45, and 65) degrees C were determined. In our experiments, the distribution coefficient of caprolactam was usually higher than 1. With increasing temperature and salt content, the distribution coefficient of caprolactam increased. With increasing caprolactam content, the distribution coefficient became smaller. Compared to benzene, 1-octanol is nontoxic and has a much larger extraction capacity. Hence 1-octanol is a prospective substitute of benzene in caprolactam extraction. The extension of the Lyngby modified UNIFAC model was applied to represent the equilibrium data of systems without ammonium sulfate. CH2NHCOCH2 was defined as a new group, and new interaction parameters were determined from the equilibrium data of the ternary systems water + caprolactam + 1-octanol, water + caprolactam + 1-heptanol, water + caprolactam + benzene, and water + caprolactam + toluene. With the new interaction parameters, the equilibrium of the systems water + caprolactam + 1-heptanol + heptane and water + caprolactam + 1-heptanol + methyl cyclohexane were predicted. The prediction results agreed well with experimental value when the mass fraction of caprolactam is small.

Abstract:In order to obtain the vapour-liquid equilibrium (VLE) data of the binary and ternary systems related to the separation of thioglycolic acid (TGA) by-products, in this research, the VLE experimental data of four binary systems, (isopropyl alcohol + isopropyl acetate), (isopropyl alcohol + water), (acetic acid + isopropyl acetate) and (acetic acid + isopropyl alcohol), and two ternary systems, (isopropyl acetate + acetic acid + water) and (isopropyl alcohol + acetic acid + water), were determined using a Rose-type circulating distiller. Then, the Herington and van Ness method were adopted in order to test the thermodynamic consistency of the data obtained from the experiment. Simultaneously, the NRTL, UNIQUAC and Wilson activity coefficient models were used to correlate the determined VLE data. Due to the acetic acid presented, the HOC models were also used. In addition, the excess Gibbs free energy G(E) of the binary systems were measured to evaluate the non-idealities of the above systems. Finally, the binary interaction parameters of the thermodynamic models were measured, that can be adopted in design and optimization of the separation process of TGA by-products.
